Brothers, Once again the 34 th annual Rosary Sunday event at Martyrs Shrine last month was enjoyed by all the faithful in attendance. The weather was great for an outdoor Mass as well as the living rosary service and adoration at the outdoor Papal Altar. The altar commemorates the visit to Martyrs Shrine in 1984 of pope, now St. John Paul II. The celebrant and homilist was Fr. Tom Rosica who was inspiring to hear, especially so to the younger ones he brought up to the altar to relay the gospel message. The Fourth Degree colour guard procession was impressive and included representation from our local assembly. If you haven t yet attended this event, mark your calendar for next year, the second Sunday in September. The Shrine grounds is a wonderful setting for a family picnic or to simply walk where saints have walked and take in the views and atmosphere. Video highlights of this event can be viewed on YouTube by searching for rosary sunday 2018 celebration at the martyrs shrine in midland. Or via this link: Also on youtube, I came across a Bishop Barron who gives brief talks on a variety of contemporary topics of interest dealing with Christianity in general and Catholicism in particular. Listening through my vehicle s Bluetooth system while driving to these insights and explanations dealing with our faith by this bishop from California are now a habit for me. It is enlightening and entertaining as well as a good antidote to conventional radio. If you give this a try, be warned it can be addictive. If you cannot attend or miss one of our meetings, you can catch up by checking out our Council web page at collingwoodknightsofcolumbus.org. There you will find our Council meeting minutes, picture gallery, upcoming events as well as links to other related sites. Upcoming in October, should you want to participate, we are having a rosary service for the unborn at our church at 6:40 PM Tuesday October 2. It will be held outside weather permitting with our local fourth degree assembly colour guard in attendance. Another upcoming Council program benefitting our pro-life movement is the Roses for Life program held at our church where we provide a small stick-on rose symbolic of our pro-life stance in exchange for a donation. As always you can find out more about these and other upcoming Council programs and events and how you can participate by coming out to our general meeting held on the first Tuesday of each month. All members are also welcome to our Council executive meeting held on the third Tuesday of each month in our chambers upstairs at 150 St. Paul St. It was nice to see a good turnout at our last general meeting chaired by our Deputy Grand Knight. Let s keep up the momentum as we head into the fall season. Before you know it we will be discussing plans for our Council float in the Collingwood Santa Clause parade and preparing for our Council Christmas dinner at our church. Hope to see you all soon. Fraternally, Mike Sangregorio ===================================================================== NOTICE OF MOTION Moved that Council 5793 Donate $3,000 toward the cost of the new ramp at St. Mary s Church.
Brothers, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone that participated in making our 21 st Annual Golf Tournament another great success. With your help and participation our Council earned over $6, There are too many people to name but I do want to mention the Brothers that work with me in the Golf Committee, they work tirelessly to continue to put this annual event together and deserve recognition. They are Lorne Winkler, Mike Quinn, Harry Cogill and Dan McCarthy. These gentlemen put the extra effort and time to this project year after year and we need to thank them for that time and commitment. As mentioned there is an army of helpers and without their work on the tournament day we would not be able to put on such a successful tournament, thanks to all of them. Once again thank you everyone and mark Saturday August 17, 2019 on your calendars for our 22 nd annual tournament. I want to remind, as well as ask everyone to please attend the Annual Rosary for the Unborn. We do this annually in the courtyard outside St. Mary s (weather permitting). If the weather does not permit, we will have the Rosary service inside the Church. This all happens on Tuesday October 2 nd before the 7 pm mass. This is also a meeting night, so this will all take place before our general meeting which as you know begins immediately after mass. Please take the time to come out and pray the Rosary together and be a part of this very special evening. Finally, as much as I don t want to rush the seasons, I want to inform you all that I have booked the Father Ellard Hall as well as Jimmy Lane for our annual Christmas Dinner. It is all set for Saturday December 1 st. Last year we missed this annual event, so I have it all booked early so that will not happen again. More details will come forward as we get closer. 6 ROSARY SUNDAY REPORT The 2018 Rosary Sunday at Martyrs Shrine in Midland was a very special day. The outdoor Mass at the Polish altar was marked by a very personal and liturgically appropriate homily by Father Thomas Rosica. The Gospel was from St. Mark and told of Jesus healing the deaf man. Father Tom told of his own father working as an Opthamologist and his uncle working with the hearing impaired. At Christmas his family annually held a large party for about 80 and always decorated for the season with lots of Christmas music. One relative wanted to know why the decorations and music for people who couldn t see or hear. That was explained as how these people saw and heard with their hearts. Without these preparations the party would not be complete. I was asked to be a Minister of the Eucharist for the Mass and I couldn t help but feel that bringing Communion to the masses of humanity that rushed forward toward me was similar to World Youth Day in Downsview Ontario. The people were from every nation, very few native to this Canada. The afternoon was another special event as Father Tom was moved by the many children who participated in the Living Rosary. He put aside his planned homily but instead invited all the children present to join him on the Papal altar. He told them how Saints had walked on this same place but in particular Pope John Paul II. He told them about Jesus mother and how she, while expecting the birth of the Lord, went to visit her cousin Elizabeth, putting her cousin first in importance over her own. Let me tell you that this was indeed a special day. Without the support and participation of Squires from Richmond Hill, the Knights on Bikes, the Executive of the Catholic Women s League, a number of Fourth Degree Knights, and a selfless group of volunteers who gave so much before, during and even after this year s Rosary Sunday. =========================================================================== for September (catching up) Well here we go fall is fast approaching and your Council will be looking at hopefully having some membership recruitment that will bring in new members. Reading our newsletter is one of our best ways of communicating to our membership. We also need to insure that our Parishioners know about us and that we Father Lally Council 5793 support them. They are our future members we need them to know that we want them to be members and that what they do for our Parish need not change. If you can encourage someone, son, grandson so that means any catholic male 18 yrs. or older to join our order. I am also seeking current members to help where you can, we are running short of members at meetings and events that will bring concerns to the future of the Knights of Columbus in Collingwood. We need a minimum of 8 members to hold a meeting and or to conduct the business of our order, over the past year we have had a few meetings that were cancelled due to this lack of participation and a few that we just have had enough (8) to hold the meeting we have 93 member??? Please come and join us at one of our General meetings the 1 st Tuesday of each month your input is a necessary part of our future. Read our Take 5 Newsletter please share your thoughts these are mine. Respectfully Michael Dynes FS
Saint of the Month St. John Paul II Feast Day October 22 Open wide the doors to Christ, urged John Paul II during the homily at the Mass where he was installed as pope in Born in Wadowice, Poland, Karol Jozef Wojtyla had lost his mother, father, and older brother before his 21st birthday. Karol s promising academic career at Krakow s University was cut short by the outbreak of World War II. While working in a quarry and a chemical factory, he enrolled in an underground seminary in Kraków, in Nazi occupied Poland. Wojtyła also helped a 14-year-old Jewish girl named Edith Zierer, who had escaped from a Nazi labour camp in Częstochowa. Edith had collapsed on a railway platform, so Wojtyła carried her to a train and stayed with her throughout the journey to Kraków. Edith credits Wojtyła with saving her life that day. B'nai B'rith and other Jewish authorities have said that Wojtyła helped protect many other Polish Jews from the Nazis during the Nazi occupation. Ordained in 1946, he was immediately sent to Rome where he earned a doctorate in theology. Back in Poland, a short assignment as assistant pastor in a rural parish preceded his very fruitful chaplaincy for university students. Soon Fr. Wojtyla earned a doctorate in philosophy and began teaching that subject at Poland s University of Lublin. Communist officials allowed Wojtyla to be appointed auxiliary bishop of Kraków in 1958, considering him a relatively harmless intellectual. They could not have been more wrong! Bishop Wojtyla attended all four sessions of Vatican II and contributed especially to its Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World. Appointed as archbishop of Kraków in 1964, he was named a cardinal three years later. Elected pope in October 1978, he made pastoral visits to 124 countries, including several with small Christian populations. John Paul II promoted ecumenical and interfaith initiatives, especially the 1986 Day of Prayer for World Peace in Assisi. He visited Rome s main synagogue and the Western Wall in Jerusalem; he also established diplomatic relations between the Holy See and Israel. He improved Catholic-Muslim relations, and in 2001 visited a mosque in Damascus, Syria. Relations with the Orthodox Churches improved considerably during his papacy. Christ is the center of the universe and of human history was the opening line of John Paul II s 1979 encyclical, Redeemer of the Human Race. In 1995, he described himself to the United Nations General Assembly as a witness to hope. His 1979 visit to Poland encouraged the growth of the Solidarity movement there and the collapse of communism in central and eastern Europe 10 years later. John Paul II began World Youth Day and traveled to several countries for those celebrations. He very much wanted to visit China and the Soviet Union, but the governments in those countries prevented that. One of the most wellremembered photos of John Paul II s pontificate was his one-on-one conversation in 1983, with Mehmet Ali Agca, who had attempted to assassinate him two years earlier. In his 27 years of papal ministry, John Paul II wrote 14 encyclicals and five books. In the last years of his life, he suffered from Parkinson s disease and was forced to cut back on some of his activities. Presiding at his funeral Mass, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger then dean of the College of Cardinals and later Pope Benedict XVI concluded his homily by saying: We can be sure that our beloved pope is standing today at the window of the Father s house, that he sees us and blesses us. Yes, bless us, Holy Father. We entrust your dear soul to the Mother of God, your Mother, who guided you each day and who will guide you now to the glory of her Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen. Pope Benedict XVI beatified John Paul II in 2011, and Pope Francis canonized him in 2014.
The intervention of St Pio of Pietrelcina gave me the push I needed On September 23 we commemorate the 50th anniversary of the death of St Pio of Pietrelcina, better known as Padre Pio. Just three days earlier, September 20, it was the 100th anniversary of Padre Pio receiving the stigmata. There are millions of people, living and departed, who owe a great deal to the advice, intercession and example of this great saint; and I am one of them. My first encounter with St Pio was round a meal table in 1990, where one of the guests had regularly served Mass for the saint. He regaled us with stories of his many encounters with this extraordinary Capuchin Franciscan friar. At the end of the evening, the guest slipped into my hand a small plastic pouch containing a third-class relic, which I placed into my cassock pocket. At that time, I was an Anglican minister who had been struggling with the call to Rome since before my diaconal ordination. Hearing those tales and putting that small piece of cloth into my pocket took my life along the right path. In those days, unlike now, I had the gift of sleep. When I went to bed I fell straight to sleep and woke the next morning. Some months after receiving the relic, I began waking in the early hours. The first time it happened I realised there was someone in the room. I wasn t anxious about it. In fact, I felt completely at peace. But this continued night after night, at the same time, and eventually I realised that it was Padre Pio. In his presence, and in the forefront of my mind, in this atmosphere of peace, was only one thought: I must convert to the Catholic faith. Once I made that decision, my normal pattern of sleep returned and the visits ceased. And so, in due course, I left the Church of England, and in 1997 was ordained to the sacred priesthood by Cardinal Basil Hume. While I was parish priest in Bayswater, and still carrying that tattered relic in my cassock pocket, it was announced that Padre Pio would be canonised on June 16, I knew I just had to go to Rome and thank Padre Pio for giving me the courage and push I needed that led me into the priesthood. One morning after Mass, a frequent visitor to the parish came up to me and said: I know you have a great devotion to Padre Pio. How did she know? I d never spoken to her about it. She told me that it was so important I made this pilgrimage that she make it financially possible for me. And so, off I went. generous benefactor. The canonisation was an experience, with around a million pilgrims gathered in a roasting hot St Peter s Square, the overflow of people filling the Via della Conciliazione as far as one could see. When Pope John Paul II made the proclamation of sainthood, a huge roar broke out from the pilgrims, as the relics of the saint were brought forth. The next day, after the Mass of thanksgiving, I returned to my hotel and spoke to a Sister in the papal household. She said: Can you please be here at 7am tomorrow, bring your celebret [permission to celebrate Mass], and don t forget to kiss the Holy Father s ring. I had been invited to celebrate Mass with the Holy Father in his private chapel the next morning. I m sure you can imagine what a wonderful experience it was, offering the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass with someone who is now a saint of the Church. In spite of his advancing Parkinson s, his gaze filled me with great joy and love for him and the Church. Through all this, I could feel Padre Pio s encouragement to strive to be a better priest. Padre Pio gave me the final push I needed to leave the Church of England and become a Catholic. He drew me towards Catholic priesthood. He brought me fully home, through the Mass with the Holy Father. There is only one thing left for me to do now; and that is to visit him in Pietrelcina, so that I can kneel before his earthly relics and thank him for all he has brought about in my priestly life. Fr Alan Robinson is parish priest of Corpus Christi,

I am hoping this message finds you and your family in good health. As officers of our Council we need to insure our commitment to our Council remains strong. I must say for those that get together for our meetings and events are as strong as ever it is just our numbers are getting lower ever year. Each of you have strength and knowledge that can be a great value to our order but we need you to bring it forward. We have tried very hard to have our members join in our activity and meetings. To this end we seemed to not have had much success or at least a response on why did you join the Knights if you don t get at a minimum to 1 meeting a year. I am hoping with your billing of dues this year I can send out a survey to at least get some feedback. Please fill it out and send it to us if you wish you don t need to put your name on it we want your feedback on how we can improve things that would make you become active. This may seem like a membership issue not that of the FS of the Council. I have said this several times over the years every member is part of the membership committee. Can you get one new member to join our Council? Someday it may be too late. Read our Take 5 Newsletter please share your thoughts these are mine. Respectfully Michael Dynes FS
THANK YOU VERY MUCH CANADA!!! Robert Meadows (Circuit Court Judge, Florida) wrote the following article Thank God there is at least one American With some Basic Common Sense! American s take on the growing trade war with the US and Canada. Here is one "Have you ever stopped to consider how lucky we Americans are to have the neighbors we have? Look around the globe at who some folks have been stuck sharing a border with over the past half century: North Korea / South Korea West Germany / East Germany Greece / Turkey Iran / Iraq Israel / Palestine India / Pakistan China / Russia We ve got Canada! Canada. About as inoffensive a neighbor as you could ever hope for. In spite of all our boasts of American exceptionalism and chants of America first, they just smile, do their thing and go about their business. They are on average more educated, have a higher standard of living, free health care, and almost no gun problems.they treat immigrants respectfully and already took in over 35,000 Syrians in the last two years. They re with us in NATO, they fought alongside us in World War I, World War II, Korea, the Gulf War, the Bosnian War, Afghanistan, the Kosovo War and came to our defense after 9/11. There was that one time when Canada took a pass on one of our wars: Vietnam. Turned out to be a good call. They ve been steady consumers of American imports, reliable exporters of metals and petroleum products (they are the biggest importer of U.S. products from 37 states), and partnered with NASA in our space missions. During 911 many aircraft were diverted to Newfoundland, an island province off Canada's east coast where Americans were housed in people's homes for two weeks and treated like royalty. In return for their hospitality, this administration slapped a 20% tariff on the products of Newfoundland's only paper mill, thereby threatening its survival. And what do Canadians expect of us in return? To be respected for who and what they are: Canadians. That s what I call a good neighbor. But the King of Chaos couldn t leave well enough alone. Based on his delusions of perpetual victim-hood, out of the clear blue, he s declared economic war on Canada. On CANADA! And he did it based on Canada being a national security risk to the US! For no good reason, other than the voices in his head that told him it was a war he could win. So why not do it, then? Trump went ahead and imposed his tariffs on aluminum and steel even though we have a trade surplus with Canada on those products! Trudeau retaliated in kind. And now this morning, the White House is preparing a new wave of tariffs in retaliation for Trudeau s retaliation. This time he threatens a tariff on automobiles even though 70% of their components originate in the U.S.! It s just a temporary spat, right? Except for that smile on Vladimir s face in the Kremlin, as the NATO pact unravels a little more with each passing day. Again, we re talking about Canada. Our closest ally, friend and neighbor. On behalf of an embarrassed nation, people of Canada, I apologize for this idiotic and wholly unnecessary attack. Please leave the back channels open. We the People of progressive persuasion stand with you.
