3 Faithful Navigator Report January 2018 Worthy Sirs, I m asking prayers for the wife and family of Sir Knight Marek Powichrowski, Lady Elizabeth was involved in a serious accident on Christmas Eve at home, she is in Sunnybrook Hospital. I was myself involved in an accident outside St. Noel Chabanel Church last Thursday, I was arriving to help with St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Hampers, I slipped on ice and fell heavily on my side and elbow, fortunately two brother Knights heard my cries for help, if not I would still have lying until someone found me. I sincerely hope most of you had a good Christmas with friends and family, Lady Maureen and I had a busy and enjoyable Christmas day with our daughter, two grandsons, my son his fiancée and her son, yes we were pleased he announced his engagement to a lovely Pilipino girl Jane, looking forward to a wedding early in Looking forward to our meeting Wednesday 24 th. January 2018, do hope we get a break from all this snow, Lady Maureen and I wish you all a Safe, Healthy and Happy New Year. A couple of auld Scottish sayings Lang may your Lum Reek and Wer no awa tae bide awa,, wer no awa tae leave ye, wer no awa to bide awa, weil aye come back and see ye. 4 Saint of the Month St. Thomas Aquinas Feast day January 28 By universal consent, Thomas Aquinas is the preeminent spokesman of the Catholic tradition of reason and of divine revelation. He is one of the great teachers of the medieval Catholic Church, honoured with the titles Doctor of the Church and Angelic Doctor. At the age of five he was given to the Benedictine monastery at nearby Monte Cassino, Italy in his parents hopes that he would choose that way of life and eventually became abbot. In 1239, he was sent to Naples to complete his studies. It was here that he was first attracted to Aristotle s philosophy. By 1243, Thomas abandoned his family s plans for him and joined the Dominicans, much to his mother s dismay. On her order, Thomas was captured by his brother and kept at home as a virtual prisoner for over a year. Once free, he went to Paris and then to Cologne, where he finished his studies with Albert the Great. He held two professorships at Paris, lived at the court of Pope Urban IV, and directed the Dominican schools at Rome. His greatest contribution to the Catholic Church is his writings. The unity, harmony and continuity of faith and reason, of revealed and natural human knowledge, pervade his writings. One might expect Thomas, as a man of the gospel, to be an ardent defender of revealed truth. But he was broad enough, to see the whole natural order as coming from God the Creator, and to see reason as a divine gift to be highly cherished. The Summa Theologiae, his last and, unfortunately, uncompleted work, deals with the whole of Catholic theology. He stopped work on it after celebrating Mass on December 6, When asked why he stopped writing, he replied, I cannot go on. All that I have written seems to me like so much straw compared to what I have seen and what has been revealed to me. He died March 7, When the devil's advocate at his canonization process objected that there were no miracles to his credit, one of the cardinals answered, "there are as many miracles in his life as articles in his Summa. Fifty years after Thomas's death, on 18 July 1323, Pope John XXII, seated in Avignon, pronounced Thomas a saint. A monastery at Naples, near the cathedral of St. Januarius, shows a cell in which he supposedly lived. His remains were placed in the Church of the Jacobins in Toulouse on 28 January Between 1789 and 1974, they were held in the Basilique de Saint-Sernin, Toulouse. In 1974, they were returned to the Church of the Jacobins, where they have remained ever since. When he was canonized, his feast day was inserted in the General Roman Calendar for celebration on 7 March, the day of his death. Since this date commonly falls within Lent, his memorial was moved to 28 January, the date of the translation of his relics to Church of the Jacobins, Toulouse.

5 We can look to Thomas Aquinas as a towering example of Catholicism in the sense of broadness, universality, and inclusiveness. We should be determined anew to exercise the divine gift of reason in us, our power to know, learn, and understand. At the same time we should thank God for the gift of his revelation, especially in Jesus Christ. Basket Ball Free Throw Competition Basket Ball Free Throw January , 8:00 AM volunteer start time, Will you be there? Sir Knights all is ready for our annual Basket Ball Free Throw and we sure could use your help, even if you just show up and support those that have volunteered, but most of all cheer on those youth that will be participating. How many times do you hear there are no youth in our churches all they do is sit and play game boy, cell phone, or computers, well here are those that are yes playing a sport? Every year Councils put $$ and volunteers to work at our annual Basket Ball Free Throw they are in need of a chairman and or co-chairs. We need to do everything possible to engage our Youth maybe then we will go to church and one or two will be sitting in pews, is that worth 2 hrs of your time supporting this event at the Councils Level they are working hard to make this a success and that will happen with your help by being there. This year they have introduce two youth groups non-gender champion with a plaque and an individual Trophy. This is being done with the principal that it is a Memorial on behalf of a Brother Knight who gave himself to this and many other events, Brother Doug Murray God rest his soul. His wife June will be there to present on behalf of the Father Lally Council# 5793 plaque and trophies to our overall champions. There are two age groups 9-11 and I would like to Thank our Council for its support for so many years but a special Thank you for allowing this new look to our event. So I say to all my Sir Knights come to St Mary s School Collingwood and cheer on our Champions. January it all starts at 9 am. Michael Dynes Chairman.

6 Faithful Comptroller and Assembly affairs $$$ coming $$$ going Sir Knights, as most of you are aware I have put my hat in the ring as your new FC. I am looking at ways you and I can improve on some of the needless expenditures that apears to be ongoing for too many years. No, no one has done anything wrong it is just that we use snail mail for too many things and in the 21 st century we can do it in seconds and allow you to respond at your available time frame. Let me show you what I am pointing to, Dec. 15 of any given year we send out 1 st notice of dues owing, it is mailed out, then on Jan 15 2 nd notice of dues is mailed out. Each of these snail mail outs at almost 35 members requires you re Assembly to supply envelopes, stamps and printing. Then most members pay by sending cheques into our office which is great, however now we must use another stamp envelope, now we also need labels again cost keeps adding up on collecting annual dues. Your Assembly does not wish to increase dues to offset this expenses most of you can t remember when it was raised last time. So how do you and I reduce this? Well we are a Fraternal and Patriotic organization we need to look at this at our meetings as ONLY the Assembly should make this decision with a motion and vote on the floor and you are the Assembly! What can you do to insure that you are part of the solution, we need your current e- mail address, current address and current phone number it is your responsibility to keep us update when you make changes to your contact info. Mid-February the Assembly Retention committee starts trying to find out where some members are, that is not the Assembly responsibilities. It is up to all of us to insure that we are in contact with our Assembly. We Your Assembly need to have your contact info for administration purposes. If you don t wish to be contacted on a regular bases Just ask us to remove you from our list Phone Tree etc. This is the First input to our Sentinel Newsletter please share your thoughts these are mine. 7 Jesus, Moses, and an old man go golfing. The first one to tee off is Moses. He smashes the ball and it is heading right for the water hazard before the green. Moses raises his club, the water parts, and the ball makes it to the green. Jesus gets up to swing, cranks it out, and it is headed for the water hazard. Jesus closes his eyes and prays. The ball skips across the water and lands on the green two feet from the hole. The old man's turn comes and he drives the ball. The ball looks like it is going to drop directly into the water. A fish jumps from the water hazard swallowing the ball, as an eagle drops from the sky, grabbing the fish. As the eagle flies over the green, a bolt of lightning strikes the eagle, making it drop the fish. As the fish hits the green, it spits out the ball and the ball falls into the hole, making a hole in one. Jesus looks at Moses and says, "I really think I'm leaving Dad at home next time!"

8 From the Commanders Corner: January 2018 Sir Knights, another year and we find ourselves Blessed with each other company. How will you participate this year with your Assembly? Our Worthy Comptroller Kas has moved on, his serves to our Assembly was greatly appreciated, I have taken on that role, so Sir Knights I will do the best I can please insure you pay your dues before Jan. 15 as then we will not need to go through with more expenses of mailing 2 nd notice. Make no mistake I will not chase those that don t pay on time that is the responsibility of the retention committee, remember taken your 1 st degree you gave an oath to pay your dues on time. You may have heard but if you have not we are keeping as per Supreme our full Regalia until July 2019, our Assembly has decided to carry on with full Regalia indefinitely. All of you should have received a copy of Wake HG formation and procedure, this is something that will need to practice hopefully not use too often. If you did not get a copy I will have some at our next meeting January 24 th practice at 7 pm Father Ellard Hall. Share your thoughts send a note or even a few lines to our editor Sir Knight Frank Bondi, send some pic s that others may enjoy, how about send in a good joke we can always us a laugh or two. Come to a meeting and enjoy fraternalism at its best, it is always good to see those that we have not seen in while.
