But to chemists a solution is when things are still all mixed up.. ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: Moses sends scouts to Canaan and all of them -- except Joshua and Caleb -- bring back frightening reports. The people react fearfully and rebelliously. G-d decrees a forty year delay until the Israelites will enter Canaan, during which time all males between the ages of twenty and sixty will perish. Many Israelites then attempt to unilaterally proceed to Canaan, but are cut down by the Canaanites. Various laws are discussed: libations, giving part of the dough ("challah") to a Kohain (Priest), certain sin sacrifices, and the mitzvah of tzitzit. A Jew is found desecrating the Shabbat and is executed. First Aliyah: G-d allows Moses to send scouts to reconnoiter the land of Canaan in preparation for their anticipated invasion of the land. One member of every tribe -- with the exception of the tribe of Levi -- was chosen for this task. Moses instructed the scouts to bring back a report regarding the nature of the land; its strengths and weaknesses. He also instructed them to bring back samples of the land's produce. Second Aliyah: The scouts spent forty days reconnoitering the land. They returned to the Israelite encampment with specimens of Canaan's produce, and with an ominous report. They conceded that the land flowed with milk and honey, but they warned that its population was mighty and the cities well fortified and impossible to conquer. Only Caleb and Joshua, the scouts representing the tribes of Judah and Ephraim, dissented. They argued that the land was magnificent, and there was no reason for concern because G d could surely bring the Israelites victory in battle. The Jewish people spent that entire night wailing, expressing their preference to return to Egypt rather than be defeated in battle by the Canaanites. Third Aliyah: The Jewish people rejected the pleas of Joshua and Caleb, and decided to stone them. G-d intervened, His glory appearing over the Tabernacle. G- d informs Moses of His decision to instantaneously wipe out the Israelites in a massive plague due to their persistent lack of faith. Moses successfully invoked G-d's mercy and pointed out that this mass execution will cause a mammoth desecration of G d's name. "People will assume that G-d lacked the power to defeat the Canaanites in battle, so He instead slaughtered His people," Moses argued. Although G-d agreed not to immediately wipe out the Israelites, that generation would not enter the Land. G-d instructs the Jews to reverse course, and to head back to the desert. Fourth Aliyah: The details of the punishment are now revealed. The Israelites will wander in the desert for forty years. During that time, all males over the age of twenty -- with the exception of Joshua and Caleb -- would perish. The next generation would enter the Promised Land. The ten scouts who brought back the frightful report died immediately. When the Jews were informed of G-d's decision, they lamented and grieved. A group of people awoke the next day and decide to "go it alone," and enter the Land of Israel -- this despite Moses' warning that their plan would not succeed for it was not sanctioned by G-d. This group is cut down and massacred by the Amalekites and Canaanites. The Jews are told that upon entering Israel an individual who pledges to bring a sacrifice must also bring an accompaniment consisting of a wine libation and a flour offering mixed with olive oil. Fifth Aliyah: This section continues with the rules of the aforementioned sacrifice accompaniments -- detailing the quantities of wine, flour and oil to be brought with various species of livestock. Sixth Aliyah: The mitzvah of challah is contained in this section: when one kneads dough, a portion must be taken and given to the priest. If the Sanhedrin (rabbinic supreme court) erroneously permits an act of idolatry, and the community acts upon this permission, the Sanhedrin must bring a special sin-offering, detailed in this section. Seventh Aliyah: We now learn the rules regarding an individual who is guilty of an idolatrous practice -- whether inadvertently or intentionally. A man is found desecrating the Shabbat, and is executed. The last part of this week's reading discusses the commandment of putting tzitzit (fringes) on four-cornered garments. When looking at the fringes we remember all the commandments and refrain from following the temptations of the heart. MOSAIC EXPRESS 3

5 A special Sunday morning service marking fifty years since the miracles of the Six Day War and the launch of the Rebbe s Tefillin campaign. At an inspiring breakfast, we watched a short documentary about the Six Day War and the connection to the Tefillin campaign. We were also fortunate to hear from three veterans of the Six Day War; Armand Benmoha, Yoram Bar and Shlomo Simhon. We thank them for their heroic service and for sharing their stories with us! THIS WEEK S TORAH CLASS THE SPIES AND WINE What is the inner connection between the incident of the spies and the commandment concerning the libation of wine on the altar, issued by G-d directly thereafter? In answering this question, this class explores the mystical power of Tefillin and its effect on the world. View the week s class at themtc.com/ MOSAIC EXPRESS 5

6 PARSHA INSIGHTS TORAH IN VERSE From the book Daily Wisdom Moshe Wisnefsky TO LEARN FROM MIRACLES The overwhelming majority of the Jewish people accepted the other spies conclusions, threatening to kill Caleb and Joshua for differing. Since the people demonstrated that they lacked the faith in G-d necessary to enable them to conquer and live in the Land of Israel, G- d informed Moses that this generation would have to die in the desert. Only the next generation would enter the Promised Land. א ם י ר אוּ א ת ה א ר ץ א שׁ ר נ שׁ בּ ע תּ י ל א ב ת ם וגו': (במדבר יד:כג) [G-d told Moses, All those... who did not listen to My voice] will not see the land that I swore to their fathers. Numbers 14:23 The generation of the Exodus did not work hard enough to learn from the Divine miracles they witnessed. They therefore remained subject to their slave mentality, the assumption that reality is enslaved to the laws of nature, and that G-d is unwilling or incapable of overriding them whenever He chooses. The spies and their followers therefore forfeited the privilege of entering the Promised Land, for in order to remain true to our Divine mission while leading material lives, we need to believe that this is indeed possible. We, too, should take care to recognize the implications of all the Divine miracles we have witnessed, both throughout Jewish history and in our own personal lives. Only then will we be capable of fulfilling our Divine mission of making the world into G-d s home. In this merit, we will experience our miraculous return to the Promised Land, led by the Messiah in the final Redemption. DOUBTING DOUBTS After hearing of G-d s plan to keep them in the desert for 40 years, some of the Jewish people regretted doubting that the Land of Israel could be conquered. They organized their own army and attempted to enter the land on their own. But because they went against G-d s will and lacked Moses leadership, the nations who lived near the border of the land repulsed them. ה נּ נּוּ ו ע ל ינוּ א ל ה מּ קוֹם א שׁ ר א מ ר ה' כּ י ח ט אנוּ: (במדבר יד:מ) [Some of the Jewish people said,] We are ready to go up to the place that G d said [He would give us]. Numbers 14:40 The people had initially refused to proceed toward the Land of Israel because they believed that it was impossible to conquer it, even with G-d s help. What caused them to suddenly abandon their skepticism? After all, Moses did not show them any new miracles, nor did G-d appear and perform some heavenly exhibition of His strength. Our sages point out that every Jew inherently believes in G-d. Thus, even while the people were voicing their skepticism, they still believed in Him; their belief was just overshadowed temporarily by their emotions. Therefore, as soon as G-d rebuked them and informed them of the severity of the consequences of their lapse of faith, their inherent faith was awakened. The same is true of many of the doubts from which we occasionally suffer. Our questions are often due to an exaggerated material perspective on life. Deep within our hearts we indeed believe in G-d. In such cases, the way to overcome our doubts is not to attempt to answer them directly but simply to reawaken the pure faith that lies dormant within us. By Justice Michel M. J. Shore Do we have the confidence in the journey? Do we have the courage to reach our destination? Are we co-partners in our God-ordained destiny? The promised land requires our deliberation. Every day must be a reaffirmation Of Joshua s and Caleb s description of its sanctification. The G-d-given rights come with responsibility To Eretz Yisrael and faith that G-d gave us the ability. To envisage the land of milk and honey, Beyond all challenges and the rudimentary, Calls for a vision beyond what the eye can see; Nefesh to nefesh, together, we can make it be. The blue-sky tzitzit to be worn by men are a sign That all is possible beyond space and time. DOSE OF INSPIRATION DELIGHT CONDENSED by Tzvi Freeman What is divine wisdom? Divine wisdom is the inner delight of the Infinite, condensed and crystallized until fit for human consumption. 6 MOSAIC EXPRESS

7 An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the REMOVE THE DIRT MR. Erev Shabbos Parshas Shlach, June 16, 2017 Iwas born in Sydney, Australia, in My family had no Lubavitch affiliation, except for sending me to a Lubavitcher School in Melbourne. But it was not until after I got married that I decided to contact the Lubavitcher Rebbe directly. This happened in By then, I had been married three years already but did not have any children. As hard as we tried, my wife could not get pregnant. So I wrote to the Rebbe requesting a blessing for children. Before I wrote the letter, I was advised by Rabbi Aharon Serebryanski that I should do my part and offer something to G-d. So in the letter, I promised that, from now on, my wife and I would be observing the Jewish laws of family purity what is known as Taharat Mishpachah. The Rebbe gave us his blessing and immediately my wife became pregnant. And after this, we had five more children, so it was as if the Rebbe helped open the floodgates for us. I wrote to the Rebbe many times. Sometimes the Rebbe answered, sometimes he didn t. I had also gone to New York and stood in line several times when the Rebbe was handing out dollars for charity, but these encounters were seconds in length. On one occasion, I had gone into a business deal that didn t work out and, as a result, I was facing a huge tax bill which I couldn t pay. So my obvious course of action was to fly to New York from Sydney to see the Rebbe while he was distributing dollars on Sunday morning. In three or four seconds I explained my problem to the Rebbe, to which he answered, Besuros Tovos (may you share good news). I arrived back in Sydney and there was an updated letter from the tax office, that there had been a mistake and instead of having to pay a bill of $832,000 (in Australian dollars), I had to pay a bill of $32,000. And then, finally, in 1989, I got an audience with the Rebbe. Although the Rebbe was no longer granting private audiences, he was still receiving the donors to the Machne Israel Development Fund twice a year. The day that I came with my wife and family, there was a group of about two-hundred other people waiting, and after three hours in line, our baby, Zalman, grew irritated and started crying loudly. When it was finally our turn, I handed him to a woman I knew and asked her to look after him for a bit, as I did not want to bother the Rebbe with a squalling infant. As we were walking up, Rabbi Leibel Groner, the Rebbe s secretary, asked me, Where is the baby? I said, I gave him to somebody over there because he was crying. To which Rabbi Groner responded, Get the baby back here. The Rebbe wants to see the baby too. So I quickly ran over and got Zalman, who behaved during the audience. And I was so grateful to Rabbi Groner for being sensitive to a family with a kvetchy baby and making sure the baby got a blessing too. During the audience, I told the Rebbe about a project I had started in Sydney together with my partner Yisroel Dov Teleshevsky the Jewish Birthday Club of Australia. The continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. 8 continued from reverse object was to make all our Jewish children become aware of their Jewish birthday, and with that goal in mind, we d send a certificate to each child who registered, listing his or her Hebrew name and the Hebrew names of the parents. As well, we would send each child an annual birthday present, in accordance with the Hebrew calendar. I took the opportunity to present the Rebbe with the same certificate as the children received and told him that he was now a member of our birthday club. He chuckled at that and asked how much were the membership dues. I told him there were no dues. Why? he demanded, smiling broadly, It s not normal for a membership not to require dues! I explained that we felt more kids would register if they were not required to pay dues. To which the Rebbe replied, So you are preventing me from paying? I am not afraid of such an expense. It was a very amusing and memorable moment. After that the Rebbe gave all of us blessings. In particular, I had requested a blessing for my older brother, telling the Rebbe that I was worried about him because he had absolutely no connection to Judaism. When I said this, the Rebbe who had been smiling before then became very serious and said, Your brother was born a Jew that means he is not only connected to Judaism but it is his essence. You must only reveal it by removing the dirt, the soot, that is covering it up. And this depends upon you, his relatives; brother, sister and sister in law I had never informed the Rebbe that I also had a sister. I felt like, in these few words, the Rebbe had delivered to me a lesson in Chabad Chasidism 101. He encapsulated the entire Chabad philosophy in those few words when you look at a Jew, all that matters is his Jewish soul. Some people may need polishing to remove the soot, but the essence is what counts. On another occasion, when I asked the Rebbe for a blessing for my brother, he told me to check my brother s tefillin but, when I asked him, my brother said he did not own any tefillin. So, of course, I bought him a pair. When I related all this to my rabbi back in Sydney Rabbi Moshe Gutnick he said, That s good but you better check them because that s what the Rebbe said to do. I didn t think I needed to they were brand new tefillin, so what could be wrong with them? But I followed Rabbi Gutnick s advice. The scribe who sold them to me thought I was crazy, but he checked them as I asked, and afterwards he reported, I am so embarrassed, because it seems that I mixed up the scrolls, and they were not in the right place. I am so sorry. But now I fixed them and your brother has kosher tefillin. I gave my brother the tefillin and suffice it to say I have since never referred to another Jewish person as having no connection to Yiddishkeit.

12 EDITORIAL A QUOI BON?! 12 MOSAIC EXPRESS
