PARSHAT PARAH In preparation for the upcoming festival of Passover, when every Jew had to be in a state of ritual purity, the section of Parah (Numbers 19) is read from a second Sefer Torah. Parah relates the laws of the Red Heifer with which a person contaminated by contact with a dead body was purified. AND FINALLY... A Police car pulls a man over for speeding. He walks up to the car and says, "Do you know how fast you were going?" "I was trying to keep up with traffic," he replied. The cop looks up and down the highway. "What are you talking about? There is no traffic." And the man answered, "That's how far behind I am!" A WHOLE NEW WAY TO MAKE $$$ WITH YOUR LEASE Make Money with your leased car! That's right! The actual construction and assembly is also described. This portion repeats many of the details described in the portions of Terumah and Tetzaveh, wherein G-d instructed Moses regarding the assembly of all these objects. The Tabernacle is erected, and G-d's presence dwells therein. First Aliyah: On the day after Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the Second Tablets, after successfully securing atonement for the sin of the Golden Calf, he gathered all the Jewish people. The primary purpose of this assembly was to inform the Jews of G-d's desire for a Sanctuary to be constructed. He began, however, with a brief reminder regarding the observance of the Shabbat. This was followed by a description of the materials needed to construct the Tabernacle, and a list of the vessels, Tabernacle parts, and priestly garments which were to be produced. The men and women came forward and generously donated all the materials which Moses enumerated. Second Aliyah: Moses announces G-d's choice of Bezalel and Oholiab to serve as foremen of the Tabernacle construction project, and he transfers to them all the donated materials. The people, however, continued donating generously, until the craftspeople report to Moses that they have more than enough materials to complete their task, causing Moses to issue a proclamation requesting everyone to cease donating materials. The craftspeople began their work. The tapestries which covered the Tabernacle were assembled, and the craftspeople construct the Tabernacle wall panels, their sockets, the curtains which covered the entrance to the sanctuary and which separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the sanctuary, the Ark, and the Showbread Table. Third Aliyah: This aliyah describes the construction of the menorah (candelabra) and the Incense Altar. The anointing oil and the incense are also prepared. Fourth Aliyah: The Tabernacle's construction is capped off with the construction of the Outer Altar, the copper wash basin, the mesh curtains which surrounded the Tabernacle courtyard, and the beams and hooks which anchored them. The Torah then gives an exact accounting of the amounts of gold, silver and copper donated for the construction of the Tabernacle, as well as the vessels and building materials constructed with these supplies. Fifth Aliyah: The High Priest's ephod -- a reversed apron which covered the back -- and its precious-stone-studded shoulder straps were made. The High Priest's Choshen Mishpat ("Breastplate of Judgment") was assembled. It contained four rows of precious stones, each row containing three stones. Artisans engraved the names of the Twelve Tribes of Israel upon these twelve stones. The Choshen Misphat was then secured by straps which connected it to the ephod. Sixth Aliyah: The rest of the priestly garments were completed: The High Priest's me'il (blue robe adorned with golden bells and cloth "pomegranates") and tzitz (a golden band worn on the forehead, which was engraved with the words "Holy to G-d"); and the four garments worn by both the High Priest and the regular priests: tunics, turbans, sashes and pants. With this, the construction of the Tabernacle and all its vessels and accoutrement were finished. The craftspeople brought their finished products to Moses. Moses saw that all the work had been done exactly to G-d's specifications, and he blessed the workers. Seventh Aliyah: G-d instructed Moses to erect the Tabernacle on the first of Nissan. G- d also instructed Moses to place all the Tabernacle's vessels in their proper places, and to anoint all of the items with the anointing oil, thus sanctifying them. Moses is also directed to dress Aaron and his sons in the priestly garments, and to anoint them, too. When Moses finished this task a Cloud of Glory and the Divine Presence filled the Tabernacle. This cloud also served as the Jews' guide throughout their desert sojourn: when the cloud lifted, the people would travel, following the cloud until it rested, where they would set up camp until the cloud would lift again. 10 PARSHA INSIGHTS From the book Daily Wisdom By Moshe Wisnefsky BREAKING IN ORDER TO BUILD After fashioning the coverings and walls of the Tabernacle, the artisans proceeded to fashion its furnishings, first of which was the Ark of the Covenant. א מּ ת י ם ו ח צ י א ר כּוֹ ו א מּ ה ו ח צ י ר ח בּוֹ ו א מּ ה ו ח צ י ק מ תוֹ: (שמות לז:א) [The artisans made the Ark, as instructed,] two and a half cubits long, one and a half cubits wide, and one and a half cubits high. Exodus 37:1 Unlike the other furnishings of the Tabernacle, the dimensions of the Ark were all incomplete measurements. Inasmuch as the Ark housed the Torah, this alludes to the idea that the Torah must break us: It must be learned in such a way that it breaks our ingrained habits and negative personality traits. SEVEN WAYS TO LIGHT UP THE WORLD Next the artisans fashioned the Table of 12 loaves. After this, Moses threw gold for the DOSE OF INSPIRATION BEYOND I by Tzvi Freeman The primordial blunder was the discovery of self. The first man and woman in the Garden of Eden ate of the Tree of Knowledge and realized that they exist. Ever since then, that self-consciousness has been the root of every disaster. Every I and me, every sense of being is a denial of the Oneness of the Creator and the creation. It is a statement that there is 10 MOSAIC EXPRESS Candelabrum into the furnace, and G d fashioned the Candelabrum. ו יּ ע שׂ א ת ה מּ נ ר ה ז ה ב ט הוֹר וגו': (שמות לז:יז) [G d] made the Candelabrum out of pure gold. Exodus 37:17 The Candelabrum, the source of light in the Tabernacle, signified insight and enlightenment. The sudden and elusive flash of insight and illumination in the mind is similar to a bolt of lightning flashing across a dark sky. Every Divine soul is a source of Divine illumination. It is in this sense that the soul is metaphorically termed the lamp of G d. The seven lamps of the Candelabrum signify the seven basic types of Jewish souls. Each type has its particular path in revealing Divinity, based on the seven basic emotions: (1) the love of G d, (2) the awe of G d, (3) connecting to G d through studying the Torah, (4) overcoming obstacles opposing G dliness in the world, (5) appreciating G d s goodness, (6) the pride in being G d s emissary in the world, and (7) humility. something else, namely me, and that me is autonomous from all else. The goal of humankind is to reach beyond the state of Adam and Eve in the Garden to a state where any sense of ego is meaningless. A place called Eden, which is beyond the Garden, the place of Essential Being from where all delights flow... And a river went out from Eden to water the Garden. And now you know the secret of why such a tree was created. KIDS CORNER VAYAKHEL Questions: 1. This parsha begins with Moshe assembling the entire congregation together (Exodus 35:1). What are two other places in the Torah where someone gathers together a congregation? 2. In this parsha, what four types of jewelry do the Jews donate to the Mishkan? 3. In this parsha, what is done "every morning" (baboker baboker)? What else in the Torah is done "every morning"? (3 answers) Answers from last week: 1. Which two people appear in the Torah for the first time in this parsha? Betzalel ben Uri, the artisan in charge of building the Tabernacle, and his assistant, Aholiav ben Achisamech, appear in this parsha for the first time (Exodus 31:2, 6). 2. In what context is the "the finger of God" (Etzbah Elokim) mentioned? Where else in the Torah is the "the finger of God" mentioned? The tablets of the Ten Commandments were written "with the finger of God" (Exodus 31:18). In parshas Va'erah, the magicians of Egypt declare that the plague of lice displays "the finger of God" (Exodus 8:15). 3. The Hebrew word for mask is masecha, yet in this parsha the word used instead is masveh. Who wears this "mask"? And in what two contexts does the word masecha appear in the parsha? At the end of the parsha, Moshe wears a masveh on his face after speaking with the people (Exodus 34:33). The Golden Calf is called an "egel masecha" (a molten calf) (32:4), and later the Jews are warned not to make any "elohei masecha" (molten gods) (34:17).

An inspiring story for your Shabbat table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the THE MIDNIGHT CALL MR. Erev Shabbat Parshat Vayakhel Pikudei, March 9, 2018 M y parents were refugees from Poland who met and married in a displaced persons camp in Germany a place called Foehrenwald, just outside of Munich. Unfortunately, my father did not live long; he died when my mother was pregnant with their first child me. So I was born in a DP camp to a widow. My mother never remarried, but eventually she brought me to the United States, and we made our home, together with my grandmother and my aunt, in New York. When I was eight years old, my mother went looking for a yeshivah for me, but all she could afford was ten dollars a month, when the going price was more like twenty-five dollars a month. She went from yeshivah to yeshivah and could find nothing, until she came to the Lubavitcher yeshivah. There, after hearing her story, they offered to take me in for free. But she wouldn t accept that, so finally a deal was struck that she would pay five dollars a month. That s how I became a Lubavitcher. I was very happy at the Lubavitcher yeshivah. The teachers there were extremely kind, warm and giving. They were chasidim from the old world who honored the Rebbe with how they taught the children. I had my first private audience with the Rebbe in 1964, when I was fourteen. At the time I was suffering from a chronic disease called ulcerative colitis, which causes painful inflammation of the intestinal lining, and the rosh yeshiva, Rabbi Mendel Tenenbaum, told me to go see the Rebbe about it. I was very intimidated walking into the Rebbe s office it was just a very awesome feeling to be in the same room with him. But his smile broke all barriers. The kindness was plain to see on his smiling face. When I told the Rebbe why I had come, he said, Ask a doctor if it s a good idea for you to eat rice. Tell him that a friend has told you to eat rice. He called himself my friend and I was elated. I was a fourteen-year-old boy with no father, and suddenly I had a friend in the Rebbe. It was truly amazing. When I related this to my mother, she immediately started feeding me rice. She believed in the wisdom of the Rebbe, and if the Rebbe said rice was good for my condition, well, she would make sure I had plenty of it. So I ate rice and, for at least seven years, I experienced no recurrence of the colitis. Previously, I had seen many doctors for this condition, which is quite painful and causes extensive bleeding, but while the medication they gave me sometimes helped for a short while, the problem never really went away. I was told there was no cure, yet the Rebbe helped me just like that with this simple suggestion. That was not the only time the Rebbe helped me. continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. 12 continued from reverse The second time was when I was 40 years-old and a father of young children. In 1990, after succeeding in the kosher restaurant business, I took my first vacation in a dozen years. I remember that I was putting our suitcases in the car, when suddenly I had trouble breathing. I put the suitcases down, lit a cigarette, calmed down, and all was well. But this kept happening every time I picked up the suitcases again each time I exerted myself, my breathing became very strained. Finally, my wife stepped in and insisted I get medical attention. To make a long story short after a stress test, it became clear that my heart was in trouble. I had a blockage in my arteries, and I needed an emergency angioplasty. I underwent surgery on Shabbat because it couldn t wait. But there were complications and I was experiencing severe clotting, despite high doses of blood thinners. This is a very dangerous situation because if a blood clot migrates, it can stop the heart, damage a lung, or cause a stroke. My life was in danger. Sunday morning, my wife decided to go see the Rebbe while he was giving out dollars to be given to charity because I desperately needed his blessing. The Rebbe blessed me to recover, but he also told my wife to have my tefillin checked immediately. Following his instructions, she took it to a scribe who could do that. Meanwhile, a blood clot was found in my leg, which the doctors were able to remove. They gave me several blood transfusions, but these were not helping with the continuing clotting issue. They could not figure out why this was happening. That Monday night at midnight! my wife got a call from Rabbi Leibel Groner, the Rebbe s secretary, The Rebbe wants to know what is wrong with your husband s tefillin. Unfortunately, my wife had no answer because the scribe had not responded as yet. Rabbi Groner was none too pleased. He said to her, The Rebbe is Dedicated in loving memory of our dear father waiting for the answer! The next day the scribe reported back that there had been a problem with the letter lamed in the word levavecha, meaning your heart. But he had fixed it, and now the tefillin were one hundred percent kosher. Right when I heard that news, they came to test my blood again, but now the results came back showing that everything was totally normal! I was finally on the road to recovery. I would like to point out how amazing was the Rebbe s caring for every Jew. When my wife went to see him that Sunday, how many other people came to see him that day? Fifteen-hundred? Two thousand? And yet he remembered her request. He remembered our problem. He remembered our names! And he cared so much that he had his secretary track down our phone number, which was unlisted at the time, and call to inquire at midnight no less! The Rebbe s level of concern and kindness to me was unfathomable. He cared deeply about each and every individual that he met. And I m a witness to it because it happened to me. 13 LA SIDRA DE LA SEMAINE VIVRE AVEC LA PARACHA CHABBAT PARACHAT VAYAKHEL-PEKOUDÉ CHABBAT PARA 10 MARS ADAR 5778 VAYAKHEL Moché réunit le peuple d Israël et réitère le commandement d observer le Chabbat.

16 MOSAIC EXPRESS
