4 ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: This week's reading, Acharei-Kedoshim, begins with a detailed description of the service of the High Priest on Yom Kippur. Dozens of commandments are then discussed in this week's reading. Among them: the prohibitions against offering sacrifices outside the Temple; consuming blood; incestuous, adulterous, or other forbidden relationships; various mandatory gifts for the poor; love for every Jew, prohibition against sorcery; honesty in business dealings; and sexual morality. First Aliyah: The High Priest is instructed to only enter the Holy of Holies chamber of the sanctuary once a year, on Yom Kippur; and even on this holiest day of the year, the entry into the Temple's inner sanctum must be accompanied by a special service and specific offerings which are detailed in this reading. The High Priest was only permitted to enter amidst a cloud of burning incense. Also, special white garments were worn by the High Priest on this day. While offering the day's sacrifices, the High Priest would "confess" on behalf of the entire nation, attaining atonement for the past year's sins. This section continues with a description of the "scapegoat" ceremony procedure. Second Aliyah: After concluding the order of the Yom Kippur service in the Temple, the Torah instructs us to observe Yom Kippur as a Day of Atonement when we must abstain from work and "afflict" ourselves. The Jews are then forbidden to offer sacrifices anywhere other than the Tabernacle or Temple. Third Aliyah: We are enjoined not to consume blood. When slaughtering fowl or undomesticated animals, we are commanded to cover their blood with earth. The Jews are admonished not to follow the depraved ways of the Egyptians and Canaanites. On this note, the Torah provides a list of prohibited sexual relationships. The list includes adultery, cohabiting with a menstruating woman, and forbidden close relatives. Fourth Aliyah: The prohibitions against homosexuality and bestiality are mentioned. The Jews are then warned that engaging in these forbidden relationships will result in their 4 MOSAIC EXPRESS expulsion from the Land of Israel -- a holy land which cannot tolerate immoral behavior. G d commands the Jewish people to be holy. This section then briefly discuses several laws: revering parents; observing the Shabbat; prohibitions against idolatry; the obligation to burn "leftover" sacrificial flesh; the obligation to leave certain parts of one's harvest for the poor; not to lie, cheat, withhold wages, swear falsely, curse or mislead another. Fifth Aliyah: More mitzvot: Not to pervert justice, gossip, be indifferent to a fellow's predicament, hate a fellow Jew, bear grudges, or take revenge. To reprimand a sinner, and to love every Jew. The following statutes are also given here: not to sow a field with two kinds of seed, wear a garment made of a mixture of wool and linen (shatnez), or crossbreed animals. The section also includes with the laws of one who commits adultery with a half-free maidservant. We are introduced to the laws of "orlah," the prohibition against eating the fruit of a new sapling for the first three years, and the obligation to sanctify the fruit of the fourth year. We are enjoined not to engage in witchcraft or prostitution, or tattoo our bodies. Men are instructed not to destroy the hair at the edges of their scalp or the corners of their beards. We are commanded to observe the Shabbat; respect G d's sanctuary, Torah scholars and the elderly. Sixth Aliyah: We are commanded to love converts. We are also enjoined to be truthful in business dealing by maintaining honest weights and measures. The Torah prescribes capital punishment for one who worships Molech; a form of idolatry which required human sacrifices. The Torah also describes the punishment which will befall the nation if they neglect to punish Molech worshippers. Seventh Aliyah: The Torah sets the punishments for individuals who curse their parents and those who engage in prohibited sexual relations. We are instructed not to follow the customs and traditions of the heathens, and to be meticulous about eating only kosher foods. The Torah portion ends with an enjoinder that we be holy. Iyar , Wednesday May A year after the Exodus, G d instructed the people of Israel to bring the Passover offering on the afternoon of the fourteenth of Nissan, and to eat it that evening, roasted over the fire, together with matzah and bitter herbs, as they had done the previous year just before they left Egypt. There were, however, certain persons who had become ritually impure through contact with a dead body, and could not, therefore, prepare the Passover offering on that day. They approached Moses and Aaron... and they said:... Why should we be deprived, and not be able to present G d s offering in its time, amongst the children of Israel? (Numbers 9:6 7). In response to their plea, G d established the 14th of Iyar as a Second Passover (Pesach Sheni) for anyone who was unable to bring the offering on its appointed time in the previous month. The day thus represents the second chance achieved by teshuvah, the power of repentance and return. In the words of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch, The Second Passover means that it s never a lost case. It is customary to mark this day by eating matzah, shmurah matzah if possible

6 PARSHA INSIGHTS TORAH IN VERSE From the book Daily Wisdom Moshe Wisnefsky THE POWER OF YOM KIPPUR The rituals that were performed by the high priest in the Tabernacle on Yom Kippur atoned principally for the collective misdeeds of the community. In contrast, each individual atones for his or her own personal misdeeds on Yom Kippur through repentance, fasting, and refraining from working on this day. כּ י ב יּוֹם ה זּ ה י כ פּ ר ע ל יכ ם ל ט ה ר א ת כ ם וגו': (ויקרא טז:ל) For on this day, [G-d] will effect atonement for you in order to purify you. Leviticus 16:30 Rather than surgically removing our misdeeds from us, Yom Kippur removes us from our misdeeds, by elevating us far above them. Therefore, the focus on Yom Kippur is on our relationship with G-d rather than on our misdeeds per se. What is required of us on this day is to yearn to be reconciled with G-d in a general sense, and to express this yearning by observing Yom Kippur properly. Yom Kippur elevates us this way because the day itself reveals the intrinsic connection that every Jew shares with G-d by virtue of his or her Divine soul. The connection between our essence and G-d s essence has existed since before Creation and is therefore not limited by time or space. For this reason, it cannot be damaged by any misdeeds we might have committed. Thus, the very day of Yom Kippur by revealing this intrinsic connection between ourselves and G-d wipes our slate completely clean. THE POWER OF SACRIFICE G-d gave Moses further instructions regarding sacrifices, stipulating that they may be offered up only in the Tabernacle (or in its successor, the holy Temple). לה' וגו': (ויקרא יז:ה) The Israelites should bring their feastofferings to G-d. Leviticus 17:5 Offering up animal sacrifices to G-d seems to go against the Torah s respect for animal life. Even with regard to non-animal sacrifices, why would G-d ask us to take valuable property and burn it up for no apparent benefit? Furthermore, of all G-d s commandments, why does the Torah refer only to sacrifices as being pleasing to G- d? Surely it pleases G-d when we perform any of His commandments! The answer is that sacrifices please G-d in the purest way precisely because the only possible reason for offering them up is in order to fulfill His will. Unlike other commandments, there is no possible ulterior motive for sacrifices. Since they fly blatantly in the face of logic, no selfinterest can be involved. Clearly, this is a much greater state of self-nullification than that required to fulfill any of the Torah s other commandments. Today, our daily prayers are a reflection of the sacrifices offered up in the Tabernacle. Just as with the sacrifices, it may seem illogical to waste our valuable time on praying when we could be actually doing something even holy deeds, such as studying the Torah or performing some practical commandment. Yet it is precisely by dedicating our valuable time and concentration to nothing other than getting closer to G-d that we connect to Him in the most profound, intimate way. By Justice Michel M. J. 7 An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the THE YOUNG ROLE MODEL MRS. Erev Shabbos Parshas Acharei-Kedoshim, May 5, 2017 Iwas born in the USSR in the decade after the Holocaust, shortly after the death of Stalin. By then, there was no dayto-day fear for the Jews of being killed or sent to death camps. By then, the fear was of being persecuted simply for practicing Judaism. Nevertheless, largely through my grandfather s efforts, we got a Jewish education, and we stayed loyal to Torah. In 1971, we had the opportunity to get out, and we took it. We came to Israel, where we had relatives, and settled in Kiryat Malachi. I had just finished high school in Russia, and now I enrolled in a language school to learn Hebrew, with the intent of continuing on to university. At this time, many people were telling my father that his daughter should not be going to the university that it was not right, not proper, for a religious girl to do this. My father was conflicted and didn t know how to guide me. Meanwhile, I was determined to get a university education and had enrolled in a preparatory course. But also, I didn t want to hurt my father or go against him. So, when the opportunity came to visit New York and see the Rebbe who, I knew, had studied in universities in Paris and Berlin I seized the chance. I was sure the Rebbe would understand me and also help me put my father s mind at rest. In advance of the audience, I wrote a long letter to the Rebbe in Russian, explaining my situation and pouring out my heart. And when I walked into the Rebbe s office, my letter was lying on the table in front of him. This I remember vividly. I had been very anxious before this meeting but, in the Rebbe s presence, I felt calm and comfortable. He was smiling when he started to speak, using a very elegant, poetic Russian. I had only heard this before from very few people who came from aristocratic families. No one speaks like this anymore. He said, The university in the modern Western World is not anything like the university was in Europe before World War Two. Back then, the university placed a great deal of value on pure study. Today it s not like that. Today, people go to university for the atmosphere and the social groups, while simply acquiring enough knowledge necessary for whatever profession will generate the most income for them. At this point his smile grew wider. But from your letter, I see that is not the reason you want to go. And, of course, he was one-hundred percent correct. I am sure that the university will not harm you or influence you negatively, he continued, but that is not the issue here. The issue is that you cannot think only about yourself but also about others. Your family has kept the Torah in Russia when it was an incredible feat (How he knew that, I don t know, because I said nothing about that in my letter.) And you must continue to serve as a role model to those Russian Jews who will soon leave the Soviet Union. Hundreds will come out, and then thousands, followed by hundreds of thousands. They will see you and think that, if a girl from a family such as yours went to university, it must be a good thing to do. But they will not have your background or your strengths, and the university will influence them negatively. It will draw them continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in over 1400 videotaped interviews conducted to date. These stories are based on the recollection of the individuals recounting them. 8 continued from reverse away from G-d and His Torah. I must say that I listened to his words with total astonishment. I knew how hard it was to get out of Russia and I couldn t fathom hundreds of thousands of Jews being allowed to leave. Back in 1971, this was an impossible dream. In fact very few Jews even wanted to leave. Yet the Rebbe knew, even back then, that it would happen. That said, he went on, there are other ways to acquire an education. You can study via a correspondence course, for example. And I see you would like to study languages perhaps you would like to study English? When I countered that there were many native English speakers in Israel and there would be no job for me, he responded, Not everybody who knows a language knows how to teach that language. The Rebbe recommended as well that I study in a girls seminary in Kfar Chabad, the Lubavitch enclave in Israel. He said that although my family had kept the Torah in Russia, my knowledge of Judaism was not complete and such studies would serve me well in the future. His words had a big impact on me. Rather than enrolling in university to study psychology, I took his advice and I enrolled in the girls seminary in Kfar Chabad. I studied to be a teacher and received a teacher s certificate. This teacher s certificate proved to be a most valuable thing later on because, when the Rebbe s prophecy came true and hundreds of thousands of Russian Jews streamed into Israel, I was able to help them. The Rebbe then instructed me to work for an organization called SHAMIR (Association of Religious Professionals from the USSR), which was set up to help Russian immigrants spiritually as well as physically by helping them settle in Israel. Years later I got a job as a teacher in a language school, where I taught Hebrew to Russian immigrants. Thanks to the key to success I received from the Rebbe, I was able to help them. Yes, I was not a native Hebrew speaker. In fact, Hebrew was my third language after Yiddish and Russian. And I was living in a sea of people who were native Hebrew speakers. Some of them said to me, What? You will teach Hebrew? You are coming with straw to a place of straw? But, as the Rebbe said, very few people who know a language know how to teach that language. I had studied how to do it and, in the end, that served me well there was even a waiting list of students who wanted to enter my class. In loving memory of Leah Feiga Bas Meyer By her children Simcha and Shellee Pollard, Bruce and Jennifer Pollard, Gary and Chris Pollard You can help us record more testimonies by dedicating future editions of Here s My Story I firmly believe that none of that would have been possible if I had not listened to the Rebbe s advice because, truth be told, I didn t want to learn in a girls seminary, where the students educational level was considerably lower than mine. I wanted to go to university and many of my friends were saying to me, You could be a professor what a shame that you should pass up such a chance. So it was hard to make the decision not to go. But I followed the Rebbe s advice because I trusted that he knew what was best for me and for the many people that I was able to help. Guiding this individual to control his disproportionately heavy expenses the Rebbe explained, Though my well-known approach, is the opposite of extreme frugality, having an organized budget and spending accordingly is an absolute necessity. Even a wealthy individual, the Rebbe pointed out, must conduct his spending in this way, how much more so a communal worker.1 12 Iyar 1. 9 LA SIDRA DE LA SEMAINE PARACHAT A HAREI - KEDOCHIM AVOT 3 6 MAI IYAR 5777 VIVRE AVEC LA PARACHA A haré Après la mort de Nadav et Avihou, D.ieu donne un avertissement interdisant l entrée non autorisée dans le Saint des Saints. (Continued on page 11) 10 MOSAIC EXPRESS
12 MOSAIC EXPRESS
