2 WEEKDAY PRAYER SCHEDULE Sunday Shacharit.... 9:00 am Monday Friday Shacharit... 7:00 am Breakfast following weekday services Mincha Maariv at MTC In cherished memory of R'Shaya Treitel obm Sunday Thursday 4:55 pm People are encouraged to commit please contact and finally My People by Tzvi Freeman People want to know how the Rebbe attracted so many admirers. It's really quite a simple formula: Many became leaders because they brought their people to believe in them. The Rebbe was a great leader because he believed so much in his people. You know you're getting old when you stoop to tie your shoes and wonder what else you can do while you're down there. TERUMAH ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: G d commands the Israelites to build a Tabernacle. He provides the exact details of how to construct it, and how to build the different instruments and vessels which were used therein. First Aliyah: G d instructed Moses to accept contributions from the Israelites for the construction of a Tabernacle: "Let them make for Me a sanctuary, and I will dwell amongst them." The needed materials: precious metals, dyed wools and hides, flax, wood, olive oil, spices and gems. G d then gave detailed instructions regarding the construction and dimensions of the Tabernacle and its vessels starting with the Ark that housed the Tablets. The Ark was to be made of gold-plated acacia wood. Rings were to be attached to the corners of the Ark, wherein were inserted the poles that were used to transport the Ark. Second Aliyah: The Ark was to be covered with a slab of pure gold. Two golden, winged cherubs were to protrude from this cover. Next G d gave instructions for constructing the Table for the Showbread. This table was also to be made of gold-plated acacia wood, and also to contain rings for transportation poles. Third Aliyah: The seven branched Menorah (candelabra) was next on G d's list. It was to be beaten out of a single block of pure gold, with decorative cups, knobs and flowers on its body. The Torah now turns its attention to the construction of the Tabernacle's sanctuary. The covering of the Sanctuary was to consist of several layers of tapestries. The first layer was to be a woven mixture of dyed wools and linen. The second layer was to be made of goat's hair. These two oversized coverings also covered the outsides of the Tabernacle's walls. The very top of the Tabernacle was then to be further covered by dyed ram skins and tachash hides. made of gold-plated acacia wood. The bottom of each beam had two projections that were to be inserted into two silver sockets. The Tabernacle's front side (to the east) was to have no wall. Its northern and southern side were to have twenty beams each. Its western wall was to have eight. Altogether the inside of the sanctuary was 30 cubits (approx. 45 feet) by 10 cubits, and 10 cubits high. The beams were held together by several crossbars. Fifth Aliyah: The Tabernacle's sanctuary was to consist of two sections: the innermost chamber was the Holy of Holies, wherein the Ark was to be placed; and the outer chamber was the Holy Chamber, which housed the Menorah and the Table (as well as the Golden Altar which will be described in next week's reading). Two curtains were to be woven of dyed wools and linen. One was to be placed between the Holy of Holies and the Holy Chamber, the other covered the eastern side of the Tabernacle its entrance. Sixth Aliyah: G d then gave instructions for the construction of the Outdoor Altar. This altar was to be made of copper-plated acacia wood, and it was to have four "horns," vertical projections, protruding from its uppermost corners. The altar, too, was equipped with rings and transportation poles. Seventh Aliyah: The Tabernacle courtyard was to be 100 cubits (approx. 150 feet) by 50 cubits, and enclosed by mesh linen curtains. The entrance to the courtyard was to be on its eastern side, and the entrance was to be covered by a curtain woven of dyed wools and linen. Fourth Aliyah: The walls of the Tabernacle were to be upright beams 2 l Mosaic Express

4 My uplifting experience at the International Convention of Shluchos by Sara Eldor, JANUARY Being on a very tight schedule our group boarded a bus going to the Ohel, the second time for me. On the bus you could feel and hear the excitement shared by the women. We came from all corners of the world, from many different walks of life and cultures. We spoke many languages but somehow we were a cohesive unit in this unbelievable experience. Needless to say that I immediately bonded with an Israeli woman from Tel-Aviv! I was privileged and honored to attend the recent International Women s Chabad Convention in Brooklyn New York. On Saturday night, together with Nechama and Zeldie, we began our journey on a flight to New York. We arrived at La Guardia airport at 9:30 pm, hopped into a taxi and went directly to the Ohel, the resting place of Rebbe and his wife. Although I had visited the Ohel many times, every time I go I feel as I though I am receiving a new burst of energy, inspiration, guidance, clarity and compassion as I ask for blessings for my family and my entire community. We left the Ohel and went to Zeldie's parent s house, which is very close to where the convention is held. I felt as though I was coming home as I was warmly received with open arms. Sunday morning, Nechama and Zeldie went to the convention and I joined the in-depth guest program. Just as I have learned in the many classes I have attended over the years, every kind of Jewish woman was there and I felt very comfortable, even though I was on my own. I listened to two inspiring and very informative lectures. The first, given by Raya Raskin, Zeldie s sister-in-law was titled Three Steps to Personal Redemption, which reiterated that all our personal questions are answered in the. The second lecture, The Essence of the Jewish Woman, by Devorah Alevsky gave us a glimpse into the soul to soul connection. We stayed a very short time as we had to return to Crown Heights to get ready for the main event, the culmination of the entire Kinus the Gala Banquet at the New York Hilton in Manhattan. Busses left from a few locations in Crown Heights at 4:00 pm sharp. At 5:30 pm we arrived and I entered a huge, unbelievable hall where over three thousand women - shluchos and their guests - would gather and bond for the next 5 hours or so... One cannot possibly imagine the energy in that room! WOW... I had heard about men and women who lived in far flung places but listening to 4 l Mosaic Express

5 them speak brought everything to life. The inspiring words of dedicated shluchos and shluchim that faced numerous challenges, leaving their families and childhood homes to places I cannot even pronounce, having to start all over, creating a shul on Shabbos which became a classroom during the week, which then became their home again. Through all of this they remained focused, positive and represented the Rebbe's mission with joy and happiness besimcha! KOL HAKAVOD! Mrs. Chani Lipskar, who was the keynote speaker for the evening, shared a very emotional and memorable speech. Together with her husband they were sent by the Rebbe in 1969 to South Florida to start a Jewish community. In the late 70's and 80's they planted the seeds for a new shul in a neighborhood that at that time was very ant-semitic and did not welcome Jews. With a positive attitude, donations and under the guidance of the Rebbe, they were able to open what is today known as The Shul. Unbelievable story. While listening to all the speakers I could not help but be in awe of the banquet. The food, organization, the sheer numbers of women in the hall was simply electrifying. (Treitel) Hecht, Nechama le (Treitel) Bendet, Chana (New) Kaplan, Nina (Rosenfeld) Neparstek, Chana (Treitel) Refson, Chaya Schera (New) Spalter. I smiled as I was hugging them, remembering how young they were when I had joined the MTC family. They are the new generation that will share and spread the light of Judaism to many corners of the world, continuing the Rebbe's mission. Yasher Koach! As the evening was coming to an end and the lights were dimmed, all three thousand women stood and held an MTC Kolel for Men CHAVRUSA/ONE-ON-ONE LEARNING ON THE SUBJECT OF YOUR CHOICE or sign up for the exciting DO-IT-YOURSELF GEMARA GAIN THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO LEARN TALMUD ON YOUR OWN Mondays and Thursdays 8:00 9:15 pm illuminated stick that lit up the entire room, giving it a magical glow. 6 Torah law is the "nullified by sixty" principle. For example, if a piece of nonkosher food accidentally falls into a pot of kosher food, the undesirable element is "nullified" if the desirable element is sixty times greater than it. SIXTY DAYS OF PURIM by Yanki Tauber Thus, the Rebbe concludes, in a year blessed with a double, 60-day Adar, all undesirable elements -- every and any cause for pain, sadness, discouragement or dejection -- are nullified and sublimated by the transformative joy of Adar. dar is the month of Transformation. A Adar transforms sorrow into joy, doubt into supra-knowledge, oblivion into exuberant being. Adar transforms a "scattered people" into a unified nation, and a moment of national weakness (when the Jewish people participated in Achashverosh's feast in the belief that allegiance to a mortal king will ensure their survival) into the greatest statement of Jewish commitment of all time (when for an entire year every single Jew remained faithful to his/her people and G-d, even as a decree of annihilation hung over the head of every Jew in the world). Adar transforms the most physical of activities -- eating and drinking -- into an affirmation of our bond with G-d. While two days in Adar -- the 14th and the 15th of the month -- are observed as "Purim," these represent the apex of an entire month of joyous transformation and transformative joy. A month on the Jewish calendar includes either 29 or 30 days (reflecting the 29.5-day lunar cycle). But every two or three years -- seven times in a 19- year cycle, to be exact -- Adar doubles in size: on these "pregnant years," as they're called, there's a 30-day "Adar I" followed by a 29-day "Adar II." In addition, 30th of Shevat is also the first of Adar I's Rosh Chodesh ("head of the month") days. This makes for a total of 60 "Adar days." The Lubavitcher Rebbe points out that the number "60" represents the power of transformation. 7 An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY NO REASON TO BE DISCOURAGED PROFESSOR AVRAHAM TEITELBAUM ב ה שבת פרשת תרומה, ראש חדש אדר א, תשע ד Shabbos Parshas Terumah, February 1, 2014 My name is Avraham Dovid Teitelbaum, though I am better known as Albert Teitelbaum, Professor Albert Teitelbaum. I grew up in Montreal. Until I was twelve years of age, I was an only child. My parents were both deaf-mutes and my grandfather and my uncle lived with us. Our home was kosher, and I was raised with good Jewish values, but I did not receive much of an education in Judaism nor did I attend yeshiva. In my second year of college in , I was fortunate to meet Rabbi Elya Lipsker, who was instrumental in arranging my first audience with the Rebbe, which took place right after I got married the following year. My new bride wanted to go to New York and, like a good Jewish husband, I went to New York, and this is when through the intercession of Rabbi Lipsker and his brother Yankel I met the Rebbe. At this time I was Torah observant, and I was pretty comfortable with my Yiddishkeit, but my knowledge of Chabad was limited. The Chabad movement then didn t have the outreach on a grand scale that it came to have ten or twenty years later as a result of the Rebbe s various campaigns. In my first audience with the Rebbe the most important advice that I received was to be in touch with Rabbi Nissen Mangel, who was then teaching at the Lubavitcher Yeshiva in Montreal. I followed that advice Rabbi Mangel became my mentor, and he helped me make up what I had missed because I had never studied in yeshiva. He was a dependable and patient teacher. The Rebbe had put me in very good hands. A few years later, when I received my Master s Degree in mathematics at McGill University in Montreal, I considered going to yeshiva for a time, and I went to see the Rebbe to ask if I should take this step. But the Rebbe said no. He thought I should go on to study for a doctorate because I would be more effective with a Ph.D. Again I followed his advice. I finished my studies, but it took me a long time to complete my doctoral thesis. And, at one point this was in 1964 I wrote to the Rebbe expressing my discouragement and frustration, and in reply I received this letter from him, which I will quote in part: The reason I am writing to you now is to express my surprise as well as disappointment that your letter was written in a mood of discouragement in connection with a problem of your thesis. As you have surely heard from others, it is not at all unusual to start working on a thesis and spend considerable time and effort on it only to find that a revision is necessary. While no one can know the ways of G-d, it is certain that G-d s benevolent providence extends to everyone individually, and it is the essence of the good to do good, hence the first conclusion must be as our Sages expressed it that all the Merciful One does is for the good and moreover, this is also for the good, Gam Zu L Tovah. My troubles with my thesis continued, and a half a year later, I received another letter from the Rebbe concerning this issue: Greeting and Blessing. I received your undated letter in continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in the 800 videotaped interviews conducted to date. Please share your comments and suggestions. mystory@jemedia.org

8 continued from reverse which you write about the disappointing attitude which the director of your thesis took toward it, declaring that he has found a simple solution of the general problem. Accordingly, this would entail additional work, etc..be it as it may, there certainly is no reason to be discouraged and G-d whose benevolent providence extends to everyone individually will surely lead you in the way that is good for you both materially and spiritually. And the Rebbe closed the letter with a reference to an organization that I had mentioned to him which was concerned with the study of philosophy, science and religion. He wrote: I trust that your visit with the group will be a stimulating one and that you will share the inspiration with many others in your environment, always bearing in mind that words coming from the heart penetrate the heart. With blessing, M. Schneerson Shortly after this exchange, I decided to scrap my thesis topic and start fresh, and I was assigned a new thesis advisor. Things went much more smoothly and within three years that is, by 1967 I had my Ph.D. And once that happened I was promoted, and I got into research in statistics in a particular area which lent itself to consulting. This is what I am still doing till this day, and it is work which I truly enjoy. And I do believe that I owe a great deal to the Rebbe s advice at the vulnerable times in my life. The Rebbe impressed upon me that everything that Hashem does is for the good even if we don t always see the reason for it. And most of all, I am grateful for the Rebbe s perceptiveness in recognizing the type of person that I am and the direction I needed to follow, and especially in giving me encouragement when I needed it most. Dr. Albert Teitelbaum was a professor of mathematics at McGill University until his retirement in He was interviewed in Montreal in January, לע נ ר ישראל יעקב וזוגתו מרת קריינא ע ה לאקשין ע י בניהם ר נחמן ור אברהם ומשפחתם שיחיו לעילוי נשמת אריאל בן שמואל In loving memory of Ariel Sharon Lion of Israel By Bruno & Muriel Zerdoun You can help us record more testimonies by dedicating future editions of Here s My Story This week in. > , in a letter, the Rebbe sent his blessing to Rabbi Hillel Pewzner on the occasion of his appointment as Rabbi of the synagogue Zibetzin, 17 Rue des Rosiers in Paris, France. In the letter, the Rebbe reminisced of the time he lived in Paris from 1933 to 1940 and his frequent visits to that synagogue, expressing the potential the Shul has for growth. 1 7 Adar I > , the Rebbe instructed the administration of the Lubavitcher Yeshiva in 770 to publicize to the students letters of the Rebbe Rayatz regarding the importance of studying Tanach, studying the cantillation marks for the Torah reading, and studying the history of the Jewish nation. 2 2 Adar I. > , talking on Rosh Chodesh Adar I, the Rebbe explained since 5752 was a leap year consisting of two Adar months, it collectively possessed the special quality of 60 days, the Halachic value to nullify.
