ALIYAH SUMMARY A WHOLE NEW WAY TO MAKE $$$ WITH YOUR LEASE Make Money with your leased car! That's right! You may have equity during or at the end of your lease! STOP giving your Keys back to the dealer and paying for damages! Let us put money in YOUR POCKET instead! Call Patrick Roche General Overview: The Israelites are commanded to bring the first of their fruit to the Temple, and to deliver all tithes to their proper recipients. Moses explains how the blessings and curses are to be proclaimed on Mts. Grizzim and Ebal when the Jewish nation enters into Israel. He then details the blessings they will receive for following the commandments of the Torah, and the calamities which will result from disregarding them. First Aliyah: This section introduces us to the mitzvah of bikurim, the requirement to bring one's first fruits to the Holy Temple. This mitzvah applies to fruits and produce grown in the land of Israel, and only those for which the land of Israel is praised: wheat, barley, dates, figs, grapes, pomegranates and olives. When in the Temple, the owner of the fruits recites a brief thanksgiving prayer to G-d and presents the produce to the priests. Second Aliyah: During Temple times, Jewish farmers were required to separate from their produce several different tithes. These were distributed to the priests, the Levites, the poor, and one tithe which was eaten by its owners in Jerusalem. The different tithes were not all given each year, rather there was a three-year cycle. In this aliyah, the Torah gives the procedure to be followed on the day before Passover during those years which followed the conclusion of a cycle. The farmer was to declare that he has performed all his tithing duties and then beseeches G-d to bless His people and the Land. Third Aliyah: Moses admonishes the Jews to observe G-d's commandments; reminding them that they have selected Him to be their god, and He, in turn, has chosen them to be His holy and treasured nation. Fourth Aliyah: The Jews are instructed to gather large stones when they cross the Jordan River. These stones were to be plastered, and the entire Torah was to be engraved upon them. Another set of stones was also to be inscribed with the entire Torah, and be set on Mt. Ebal. Fifth Aliyah: The Jewish people are instructed to proclaim blessings and curses on Mts. Grizzim and Ebal. The elders of the Levite Tribe together with the Holy Ark stood between the two mountains, and six tribes were stationed atop each mountain. The Levites and priests faced each mountain alternately, and stated the blessing and curses. At the end of the aliyah, we are told of the bountiful blessings which will shower us if we hearken to G-d's commandments. Sixth Aliyah: This section continues with the aforementioned blessings, and then launches a lengthy description of all the maledictions and suffering which will befall the Jews when they neglect the mitzvot. Seventh Aliyah: Moses reminds the Jews of all the miracles which have been their lot from when G-d took them out of Egypt until that very day. He concludes by saying that it is therefore incumbent upon them to follow G-d's covenant. AND FINALLY... A man told his doctor that he wasn't able to do all the things around the house that he used to do. When the examination was complete, he said, "Now, Doc, I can take it. Tell me in plain English what is wrong with me." "Well, in plain English," the doctor replied, "you're just lazy." "Okay," said the man. "Now give me the medical term so I can tell my wife." 4 By Matthew Horwood Ottawa Jewish Bulletin Aug Ottawa s downtown core will soon have a multi -function Chabad centre, thanks to the efforts of Shopify COO Harley Finkelstein, his wife Lindsay, and Rabbi Chaim Boyarsky, co-director of the Chabad Student Network. The Finkelstein Chabad Jewish Centre, which will be located at 254 Friel Street, will include a synagogue, library, commercial kitchen, student lounge, and guest suites. The building at the address is being renovated to suit the needs of the Chabad community. Immediate plans are to have the building ready to host services this High Holiday season. Finkelstein donated $500,000 for the centre, and he and Rabbi Boyarsky raised nearly $1 million in donations, bringing the total funding for the Finkelstein Chabad Jewish Centre to almost $1.5 million. Finkelstein first met Rabbi Boyarsky while attending law school at the University of Ottawa in 2005 and said he was very touched and inspired by what Rabbi Boyarsky was doing to help Jewish students. I went to his house a couple times, and every time it was packed with students, Finkelstein said. I was amazed by this man who had no connection to Ottawa or the law school, and yet he moved here to support the Ottawa Jewish community. At that time I had little money, but I told Rabbi Chaim, Look, if I can ever afford to, I want to help you build a real synagogue, Finkelstein said. In 2017, Finkelstein called Rabbi Boyarsky to 4 MOSAIC EXPRESS say he was in a position to help build a centre in downtown Ottawa where Jewish students from the University of Ottawa, Carleton University and Algonquin College could congregate. I felt strongly that this was the right time to do it, he said. Speaking with the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin, Finkelstein pointed out that there hasn t been a major synagogue in downtown Ottawa since 2015, which is insane, because we are a G7 capital. At one time, almost all of Ottawa s Jewish congregations were located downtown. The last of these was Congregation Beth Shalom on Chapel Street, which was relocated from the downtown core in Beth Shalom rented space for a year at the Soloway Jewish Community Centre before amalgamating with Agudath Israel Congregation to form Kehillat Beth Israel. Finkelstein said that when he was reaching out to people for donations, he was amazed to hear how many of them had been touched by Rabbi Boyarsky. The impact that Rabbi Chaim has had on Ottawa s Jewish community is far beyond what people realize, he said. This man is constantly working behind the scenes to make sure that the Jewish community feels supported. According to Rabbi Boyarsky, there are 2,000 Jews, including 300 young professionals, living downtown without a nearby synagogue to attend. Rabbi Boyarsky said the new centre will be open to students, young professionals and to everyone in the Jewish community. Rabbi Boyarsky said he never would have dreamt of this idea if not for Finkelstein. We thought we were going to be renting classrooms forever, he said. Finkelstein said the building is currently undergoing renovations so that High Holiday services can be held there, but that is just the beginning. There will be much larger and more ambitious renovations happening over the next 12 to 18 months to ensure it looks great and can accommodate our entire Chabad community for the long term, Finkelstein said. He added that for Rabbi Boyarsky and himself, the project is very meaningful. The idea that 10 years ago we had this crazy idea to build a synagogue in downtown Ottawa, and we were able to get it to fruition and get it done, is probably the most impactful thing I ve ever done in my life. This is us standing up to say the Ottawa Jewish community is proud of what we have here, and we want to make sure it survives and thrives, Finkelstein said. Rabbi Boyarsky says the Finkelstein Chabad Student Centre will be more than just a building. It isn t about the bricks and the mortar; it s about community, he said. It s about the unity, bonds and the friendships it creates. Rabbi Boyarsky added that he is so thankful to Ottawa s Jewish community for coming together to make this happen.

KIDS CORNER PARSHA INSIGHTS From the book Daily Wisdom By Moshe Wisnefsky KI TAVO Questions: 1. In this parsha, which four consecutive verses are read on a holiday - but not in the synagogue? 2. What item is mentioned in this parsha four times - but nowhere else in the Torah? 3. Where is plaster instructed to be used? Last Week s Answers: 1- The first law in this parsha involves a "yefas to'ar" (beautiful woman) who is captured in war. Who is the only woman in the Torah specifically described as "yefas to'ar"? In parshas Vayetzei, Rachel is described as "yefas to'ar" - "a beautiful woman" (Genesis 29:17). 2- Which part of the body is mentioned in this parsha, and nowhere else in the Torah? The non-jewish woman captured in war must let her fingernails grow to make her look displeasing to her captor (Deut. 21:12). Fingernails are not mentioned elsewhere in the Torah. 3- In this parsha, what part of a house is mentioned? This parsha mentions a roof - regarding the obligation to build a fence around the roof of one's house (Deut. 22:8). THE KEY TO SUCCESS Moses then reassured the Jewish people that despite the threats he had just pronounced, they should be confident in their ability to remain true to G d s covenant and enjoy His protection. ל מ ע ן תּ שׂ כּ ילוּ א ת כּ ל א שׁ ר תּ ע שׂוּן: (דברים כט:ח) ]Moses told the Jewish people, You must remain faithful to your covenant with G d] in order that you succeed in all you do. Deuteronomy 29:8 The Hebrew word for succeed (taskilu) also means comprehend. Thus, this verse implies that by fulfilling G d s commandments, we will comprehend all that we should do. There are many aspects of life in which we struggle to determine how to act in the most spiritually positive manner. By living in accordance with the Torah s instructions, we become sensitive to G d s will. This, in turn, aids us in comprehending how to act in accordance with G d s will in the context of those areas of life not directly governed by specific commandments. DOSE OF INSPIRATION 6 MOSAIC EXPRESS EDITING THE PAST by Tzvi Freeman Rosh Hashanah is the beginning not only of this new year, but of all years previous. How could that be? Because on that day you are empowered to reach back into time and adjust the meaning of all that has passed. True, He is the Author. But He has assigned us as editors. We adapt the storyline, transform the plot. By transforming who we are today, we rewrite our own past and author a whole new world.

An inspiring story for your Shabbat table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the Erev Shabbat Parshat Ki Tavo, August 31, 2018 Issue 294 ONE DEED IS WORTH A THOUSAND SERMONS RABBI MORDECHAI GUTNICK Iam the son of Rabbi Chaim Gutnick, who fled Europe during World War Two and made his way to Australia, where I was born. In his work as a community rabbi, my father was very much guided by the Rebbe, and I would like to relate here a few anecdotes which my father had shared with me. In 1965, my father came to visit the Rebbe and complained to him that although he was known as a great orator who could make people laugh and cry at the same time, and who was invited to speak in many places, he felt that he wasn t making a real difference. I must have given thousands of speeches in my career, my father told the Rebbe, but how many of them have really hit home? How many people have been moved by my speeches to actually change their lives? The Rebbe responded, If you speak sincerely and you speak with passion, your message will enter the hearts of others, whether you know it or not. But if you really want to see the effect of your words, then you must speak about practical things, not just concepts. Instead of just talking about Shabbat or kashrut in general terms, you should urge the audience to try to fulfill these mitzvot as much as they can. Give them something practical to do even if it s just one little thing. And then you will see results. My father was impressed by the Rebbe s advice and put it into practice immediately. When he spoke about Shabbat now he asked the non-observant in his audience to begin by not lighting a fire on Shabbat, by giving up one little thing smoking. He said, I want you to do me this personal favor. Your doctors will say it s good for you, and as your rabbi, I ll also say that it s good for you. Not long after he gave this speech, my father saw in the synagogue a man he knew, a Holocaust survivor, who was not Torah observant. After the man appeared for the third consecutive Shabbat, my father approached him and asked him what brought him there. The man answered, I heard you speak about not smoking on Shabbat, and when I went to work the next Saturday, I decided to do you that personal favor and not smoke on Shabbat. But then I thought to myself, if I m already giving up cigarettes because it s Shabbat, what am I doing here sitting at my office? So I got up, and I came here. And now I think I ll continue attending synagogue and maybe I ll even make Kiddush. That was the wonder of the Rebbe s advice one little point, one little request can open up worlds. And, after my father shared this advice with me, I have also followed it. There is not a speech that I ll make where I won t give the audience at the end some small practical thing to take away with them. Another remarkable story concerns a sixteen-year-old girl from Balaclava who wanted to convert to Judaism. After my father saw how sincere she was, he brought her before the local rabbinical court, but the judges turned her down; they reasoned that she was too young to make such a momentous decision, though they invited her to return when she was of age. But the girl became so anguished that she was unable to become Jewish that she fell ill. She s wasn t eating, she wasn t sleeping, and her parents were very concerned about her. At that stage, my father suggested she write to the Rebbe for advice. She did this she wrote a long letter explaining why she felt she had to be Jewish, pleading her case for conversion. But she received no response. Instead, the Rebbe wrote a postscript in an unrelated letter to my father, asking, What s happening with the Jewish girl from Balaklava who wrote me that long letter? My father was puzzled why was the Rebbe referring to her as the Jewish girl when she was a prospective convert? Understanding this was a message, my father, together with another rabbi, immediately set out to see continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in over 1,500 videotaped interviews conducted to date. While we have done our utmost to authenticate these stories, they reflect the listener s recollection and interpretation of the Rebbe s words. Please share any corrections, comments and suggestions. mystory@jemedia.org

continued from reverse her parents. After much discussion, the mother finally admitted that she herself was born Jewish but had decided to deny her identity because of the Holocaust. So, having a Jewish mother, the girl was in fact Jewish and didn t need to convert. She ended up becoming part of the community, getting married and raising a fine family. This story has become famous, but there is an addendum which few know. Some time after these events, my father had an audience with the Rebbe and felt compelled to ask how the Rebbe knew that this girl was Jewish. Among chasidim it s accepted that the Rebbe knows these things, he said, and I do not mean to be chutzpadik, but I would just like to ask for a mundane, rational explanation. The Rebbe smiled and said, Only a Jewish girl could have written such a letter. Afterwards, my father impressed upon me and the rest of his children that the Rebbe was looking after us all not just in a removed way, from above, so to speak, but in a very rational way. We can be sure of this, my father said, from the example of the Rebbe s concern for this Balaclava girl who had lost her connection to the Jewish people. The Rebbe brought her back into the fold because the Rebbe looks after every Jewish soul. And this is why we must do the Rebbe s work. My father was himself very dedicated to the Rebbe s work. On one occasion, the Rebbe instructed him to go to Tasmania, a remote island 150 miles south of Australia s mainland, and to check on the Jewish community in Hobart. Of course, my father went. At the time, the city had one defunct synagogue and, as he wandered the streets, my father was very puzzled by the Rebbe s directive, not sure what he was doing there. As was his custom, my father was wearing his rabbinic garb a black suit, a Homburg hat so he stood out, and a woman approached him, asking, Are you a rabbi? When he said he was, she started crying, and her story came pouring out. She said that she and her husband were Jewish, but not knowledgeable about Judaism and not observant. Recently, they had been approached by a Christian missionary group that made a strong impression upon them. The couple was left very confused. In the midst of this, the woman had prayed to G-d for clarity and asked for some sort of sign. She had asked this of G-d just the day before, and now, suddenly, she sees a rabbi walking around here in Tasmania! This was a sign if there was ever one. My father ended up talking to her and her husband for a long time and managed to convince them to embrace their Jewish roots. After they did, for some time he used to send them kosher meat and other kosher food until they moved to Melbourne, where they became fully Torah observant they, their children and their grandchildren. As far as my father was concerned, this was the only reason that the Rebbe suddenly sent him to Tasmania to save these lost Jewish souls. Rabbi Mordechai Gutnick is based in Melbourne, Australia, where he presently serves as the Rabbi Emeritus of Elwood Talmud Torah Hebrew Congregation, as the senior judge of the Melbourne Jewish court, and as the rabbinic administrator of Kosher Australia. He was interviewed in May, This week in. > , the Rebbe sent letters to the Jewish council of Bogota, Colombia, and respectively to Congregation Adath Israel of Havana, Cuba, who had each requested that a Chabad rabbi join their communities. Writing that he hadn t yet found the right person for the job, the Rebbe encouraged the local community members to take the initiative and arrange Torah classes for both adults and children. The Rebbe quoted the passage of the Talmud which states, G d does not make unreasonable demands of His creatures.
