ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: In this week's portion, Vayakhel, Moses gathers the Jews and relays to them all the details regarding the construction of the Tabernacle and its vessels. The actual construction is also described. This portion repeats many of the details described in the portion of Terumah, wherein G-d instructed Moses how the Tabernacle and its vessels were to be constructed. covered the Tabernacle were assembled. Fifth Aliyah: The construction continued. In this aliyah, the craftspeople construct the Tabernacle wall panels, their sockets, the curtains which covered the entrance to the sanctuary and which separated the Holy of Holies from the rest of the sanctuary, the Ark, and the Showbread Table. Sixth Aliyah: This aliyah describes the construction of the menorah (candelabra) and the Incense Altar. The anointing oil and the incense are also prepared. Seventh Aliyah: The Tabernacle's construction is capped off with the construction of the Outer Altar, the copper wash stand, the mesh curtains which surrounded the Tabernacle courtyard, and the beams and hooks which anchored them. First Aliyah: On the day after Moses descended from Mount Sinai with the Second Tablets, after successfully securing atonement for the sin of the Golden Calf, he gathered all the Jewish people. The primary purpose of this assembly was to inform the Jews of G-d's desire for a Sanctuary to be constructed. He began, however, with a brief reminder regarding the observance of the Shabbat. This was followed by a description of the materials needed to construct the Tabernacle, and a list of the vessels, Tabernacle parts, and priestly garments which were to be produced. Second Aliyah: The men and women came forward and generously donated all the materials which Moses enumerated. Third Aliyah: Moses announces G-d's choice of Bezalel and Oholiab to serve as foremen of the Tabernacle construction project, and he transfers to them all the donated materials. The people, however, continued donating generously, until the craftspeople report to Moses that they have more than enough materials to complete their task, causing Moses to issue a proclamation requesting everyone to cease donating materials. Fourth Aliyah: The craftspeople began their work. In this aliyah, the tapestries which MOSAIC EXPRESS 3

PARSHAT SHEKALIM When the Holy Temple stood in Jerusalem, each Jew contributed an annual halfshekel to the Temple. The funds raised were primarily used to purchase cattle for the communal sacrifices. The leftover monies were used for a variety of communal purposes, including providing salaries for the judges and maintenance of the Temple, its vessels, and the city walls. This annual tax, known as the machatzit hashekel, was due on the 1st of Nissan. One month earlier, on the 1st of Adar, the courts began posting reminders about this Biblical obligation. In commemoration, the Shekalim is the first of four readings added during or immediately before the month of AdarTorah reading of the Shabbat that falls on or before Adar is supplemented with the verses (Exodus 30:11-16) that relate G-d's commandment to Moses regarding the first giving of the halfshekel. (We too give a commemorative half shekel to charity on the Fast of Esther. ) "Parshat Shekalim" is the first of four special readings added during or immediately before the month of Adar (the other three being Zachor, Parah and Hachodesh). The Shekalim reading is also related to the upcoming holiday of Purim. According to the Talmud, Haman's decree was averted in merit of the mitzvah of machatzit hashekel. 5 Friday night dinner for BMC girls at Rabbi Levi & Ita s home By Menachem Posner, Chabad.org 11. If you need to hide something something is wrong. 12. If a person maintains his faith when he is in trouble and sees no solution, is his faith true? What choice did he have? But if a person has all that he needs and still chooses to place his trust in G-d that s true faith. 13. I never regretted telling the truth. 14. I never feared getting sick, but I dreaded the coddling that follows. 15. The loftier the soul, the greater the challenges and darkness surrounding it, like the most valuable pearl which is set in the largest encasement. 16. 6 DOSE OF INSPIRATION THE HAPPINESS DYNAMIC by Tzvi Freeman A good life, like a powerful dynamo, is generated between the opposite poles of wonder and joy. At its foundation there is wonder and awe a sense that you stand naked before a presence that encompasses all and fills all, and that presence awaits you to act, and relies upon your action. Wonderment then flows outward into beautiful deeds, helpful words and healthy thoughts along its way encountering joy and delight. And when there comes a time to rest, on Shabbat and special days, then that joy breaks out of its cocoon of your deeds, in an outburst of pure bliss and delight. What could be more delightful, more worth celebrating, than a life spent each moment in the presence of an infinite, loving G-d? PARSHA INSIGHTS From the book Daily Wisdom By Moshe Wisnefsky BLENDING ASSERTIVENESS WITH HUMILITY The artisans then fashioned the Inner Altar and the Outer Altar. These were followed by the Laver and the pillars of the Courtyard. נ בוּב ל ח ת ע שׂ ה א תוֹ: (שמות לח:ז) [As instructed, the artisans made the Outer, copper Altar] as a hollow structure. Exodus 38:7 The Outer Altar is where the process of refining our animal natures took place. The material and form of the Outer Altar allude to the two opposite attitudes we need to cultivate in order to accomplish this: On the one hand, we must be resolute in our dedication to spiritual advancement. The Jews are called a stiff-necked people ; this can be a positive quality when it is expressed as determination and obstinacy in realizing spiritual goals. This quality is alluded to by the fact that the Altar was made of copper, since the Hebrew word for copper (nechoshet) is related to the Hebrew word for brazen (nechush) stubbornness. On the other hand, the hollow Altar was filled with earth. Similarly, while we must be externally stubborn, internally we must be humble as earth. As we say in our prayers, and may my soul be as dust to all. IS YOUR CAR LEASE UP? Do not return it so fast!!!! Which two items in the Tabernacle are made of one solid piece of gold? What other item, used in the desert, was fashioned from one solid piece of metal? 3. Which three items found in the Tabernacle are a perfect square? Last Week s Answers: 1. In this parsha, what is explicitly referred to as made of gold? Where in the Torah is the first time these items mentioned? The earrings donated to fashion the Golden Calf are referred to as "golden earrings" (Exodus 32:2-3). The Golden Calf itself is called a "molten calf" (Exodus 32:4). In parshas Chayei Sarah when Eliezer meets Rivka, he gives her earrings (Genesis 24:22). 2. Aside from this parsha, where else in the Torah is a partial list of the 13 attributes of Hashem mentioned? In parshas Shelach, Moshe entreats Hashem through the 13 attributes to forgive the nation for believing the evil report of the spies (Numbers 14:18). 3. In this parsha, what item is destroyed in four different ways, and how? The Golden Calf is burned, finely ground up, scattered on water, and then drunk by the nation (Exodus 32:20). AND FINALLY... A bio-research institute in Israel is developing plans for cloning sheep. "When the Holy Temple is rebuilt, there will suddenly be a tremendous demand for blemish-free lambs to use for the Korban Pesach (pesach sacrifice)", explained its director. "We will be able to meet that demand by cloning. Each lamb thus produced will be known as a Korban copy".

An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the WHERE IS DADDY? MR. Erev Shabbat Parshat Vayakhel, March 1, 2019 Issue 320 During my early childhood, growing up in London, my father was largely absent. He was very ill and hospitalized most of the time, and so my mother had to go to work, while I was looked after by my grandparents. I remember repeatedly asking my mother, Where is Daddy? and her answer, He will be home soon, and me pressing, When? and she responding I don t know. But around the time I turned five, something changed. In the beginning of 1958, my father was released from the hospital, and we went to live in Gateshead. That is where life returned to normal, I went to school and all was well. Years went by and, eventually, when my father was in his late sixties, he developed cancer and started fading away; he entered a hospice and died. During the week of shivah the seven-day mourning period for the dead my late younger brother Simcha told me and my other brothers a story. He said, I can t hold myself back any longer. I have to share with you what happened while Daddy was in hospice. I couldn t tell you before because the person who told me this wanted to keep it a secret. Simcha then went on to relate that during his last days, my father had a visitor, Reb Yisrael Rudzinski, who had gone with him through the camps during World War Two. Reb Yisrael was a Bobover chasid, a tailor by profession, and he was among my father s closest friends, the survivors who shared every family celebration with us. When he came to visit my father for what turned out to be their final meeting, my brother left the two of them to speak together in private. Reb Yisrael was a special person, a very deep and caring person, and coming out of my father s room, he saw that my brother looked depressed. So, in trying to give my brother courage for what lay ahead, he told him this story. Do you know your father was not well when he was young? Reb Yisrael asked my brother. My brother said he knew about it but it happened before he was born. Reb Yisrael continued, When your father was very sick, I once visited your mother and your grandparents. And they showed me a letter which they had just received from the hospital following a doctors conference about your father. This letter said that the doctors felt the need to operate on him, but there was a chance that, as a result of their interventions, he could fall into a vegetative state. My grandparents asked Reb Yisrael for his opinion. Who am I to answer such a question? he replied, suggesting that this was a matter for a top leader in the Jewish world. And he offered to send a letter on their behalf to every major rabbinic figure at the time. He ended up sending out twenty-three letters, explaining the situation and asking if they should go ahead with the operation or not. He sent out so many letters because he was not sure who might reply. After continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in over 1,500 videotaped interviews conducted to date. 8 continued from reverse the war, there was so much sadness and so many questions of loss and heartache that the rabbis were constantly having to deal with. But he did receive one reply. The only one who responded was the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The Rebbe wrote that his heart pained him to hear about such suffering, but that he felt unable to answer the question. However, he wanted to put forward a suggestion he had heard from his father-in-law, the Previous Rebbe, that a person who studies Chitas daily will see salvation. What is Chitas? It is an acronym for Chumash (the Five Books of Moses) Tehillim (the Book of Psalms) and Tanya (the seminal work by the Alter Rebbe, the founder of the Chabad movement). The Rebbe was recommending that my father begin studying portions of these holy books every day according to a set schedule. Since the Rebbe was the only one who responded, Reb Yisrael decided to call him directly. After much effort as in those days long-distance calls were not so easy he got through to the Rebbe s office and asked the secretary to please tell the Rebbe that his advice could not be followed because my father was simply too ill to study Chitas. If so, the answer came back, let a family member do it on his behalf. But he lost his whole family in the war, Reb Yisrael said. He has no one. If that s the case, the Rebbe recommends that a friend do it, he was told. Although he was not a Lubavitcher, Reb Yisrael followed the directive of the Lubavitcher Rebbe and became that friend who studied Chitas for my father. This is what he told my brother. After six weeks, my father showed marked improvement, and the doctors began to speak about releasing him from the hospital. And after another six weeks, they did release him. When that happened, my father followed the advice of Rabbi Moshe Schwab of the Gateshead Talmudical College, who told him to change his place of residence as per the dictum, Meshaneh makom meshaneh mazel A change of place can change one s fortune. This is why we moved to Gateshead when I was five. From that point on, until he reached old age, my father was fine he held down a job, provided for our family and was actively involved in the local Jewish community. In that momentous conversation, Reb Yisrael told my brother another astonishing thing I have not stopped reciting Chitas for the past forty years. And I certainly intend to continue. I found this story to be very powerful because it goes to show that we don t know through which spiritual channel we are being sustained. And it also made me think about all that the Rebbe did for us all and still is doing for us today. I hope this story goes on to inspire everybody who reads it. As for their younger children, the Rebbe suggested that they attend schools which promote a higher standard of Judaism, for it is common for adults to cool off and practice Judaism at a more basic level than the education they received as youngsters. It is uncomfortable for me to say this, the Rebbe wrote, but since you consulted me, I can t remain silent.
