Shortly before his passing, Jacob blesses Joseph's children as well as his own. A massive funeral procession escorts Jacob's body to Canaan. The reading, and the Book of Genesis, concludes with Joseph's death. First Aliyah: Jacob lived his last seventeen years in Egypt. When Jacob sensed that his days were numbered he summoned Joseph and asked him to promise that he would bury him in Israel. Joseph acceded to the request. When Jacob then fell ill, Joseph visited him, accompanied by his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. Jacob conferred upon Ephraim and Manasseh the status of tribal progenitors, a status hitherto enjoyed only by Jacob's sons. Joseph asked his father to bless Ephraim and Manasseh. Second Aliyah: Joseph presents his two sons, placing Manasseh, the firstborn, to Jacob's right, and Ephraim to Jacob's left. Jacob, who was nearly blind at this point, crossed his hands, placing his right more prestigious hand on Ephraim's head. He blessed them: "May the angel who redeemed me from all harm bless the youths, and may they be called by my name and the name of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac, and may they multiply abundantly like fish, in the midst of the land." Third Aliyah: Joseph was disturbed that Jacob placed his right hand on Ephraim, and (Continued on page 4) AND FINALLY... What do you get if you cross a dyslexic, an atheist and an insomniac? 4 (Continued from page 3) he attempted to adjust his father's hands. "I know, my son, I know," Jacob responded, explaining that the "younger brother will be greater, and his children['s fame] will fill the nations." Jacob blessed the two boys further, saying that all of Israel will bless each other by saying: "May G d make you like Ephraim and Manasseh." Fourth Aliyah: Jacob summoned all his sons, and delivered to each a poetic, and sometimes cryptic, parting personal message. Reuben was chastised for his impetuousness and for "ascending upon his father's bed." Shimon and Levi were rebuked for their anger, which expressed itself in the killing of the Shechemites and the attempted execution of Joseph. Judah was blessed with monarchy, success in waging battle, and an abundance of wine and milk in his portion. Zebulon was blessed with success in his sea-trade endeavors. Jacob likened Issachar to a thickboned donkey who finds both rest and ample work. Dan was blessed with the tenacity of a serpent and the ability to judge. Fifth Aliyah: Gad was blessed with bravery in battle. Asher's blessing: an abundance of olive oil. Naphtali was blessed with the speed of a deer. Joseph was recognized for his charm, suffering, and righteousness, and was showered with a variety of blessings. Sixth Aliyah: Benjamin was likened to a devouring wolf. Jacob then repeated his request to be buried in Israel, in the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron, and he passed away at the age of 147. After an extended national mourning period, Joseph received Pharaoh's permission to carry Jacob's body up to Israel. A huge funeral procession consisting of all the elders of Egypt as well as Jacob's family went and buried Jacob. After returning to Egypt, Joseph's brothers feared that now, after Jacob had passed away, Joseph would exact revenge from them for selling him into slavery. Joseph reassured them that he harbored no ill feelings towards them. Seventh Aliyah: Joseph lived until the age of 110. Before passing away he told his brothers that G d would eventually take them out of Egypt and return them to the Promised Land. Joseph asked his brothers to promise that when that time arrived they would carry his remains with them, and inter him in Israel. By Tzvi Freeman When He had finished His world, complete and whole, each thing in its place, the earth below and the heavens beyond,... it was then that the Artist signed His holy name, with a vacuum in time, a motionless vortex to the constant change, a hollow through which the Infinite Light could enter within and kiss the finite world. And He called it Shabbat. In each thing there is a Shabbat, an opening that allows life to enter, a desire to receive from Beyond. In each being there is a sense of wonder, of knowing that there is something greater. A something it will never know. And through that opening it receives life. With that wonder, it opens itself to the Infinite. BMC Challah Bake Tues Jan10 4 MOSAIC EXPRESS

PARSHA INSIGHTS TORAH IN VERSE From the book Daily Wisdom Moshe Wisnefsky IMMUNIZATION VS. INFLUENCE Jacob then surprised Joseph further by giving Ephraim precedence over Manasseh, even though Manasseh was older. ו אוּל ם א ח יו ה קּ ט ן י ג דּ ל מ מּ נּוּ וגו': (בראשית מח:יט) [Jacob told Joseph,] But his younger brother will become greater than he. Genesis 48:19 As we have seen, Manasseh represents our obligation to protect ourselves from the negative influences of our surroundings. Ephraim, in contrast, represents our obligation to influence our surroundings, to redeem ourselves and the world from exile. Since before influencing the world we must ensure that we are protected from its temptations, Joseph named his firstborn Manasseh, and wished to give him precedence in receiving Jacob s blessing, as well. In granting his blessing, however, Jacob focused on the purpose of our descent into exile: not mere spiritual survival, but the spiritual growth that results from our successful encounter with exile. Jacob therefore gave precedence to Ephraim. Likewise, in our exile: although just like Manasseh is the firstborn securing our Jewish identity is the first step, our main purpose is to be an Ephraim, to positively influence the world around us. THE TORAH'S INNER DIMENSION Jacob then summoned the rest of his sons and blessed each one in accordance with his unique contribution to the overall Divine mission of the Jewish people. These individual emphases became the defining characteristics of the 12 tribes that descended from them. In his blessing to Judah, Jacob said that Judah s portion of the Land of Israel will be so suited to growing grapes that he will be able to wash his clothes in wine. כּ בּ ס בּ יּ י ן ל ב שׁוֹ וגו': (בראשית מט:יא) He will launder his clothes in wine. Genesis 49:11 Every time we observe a commandment, we create a spiritual garment for our souls. These garments, however, must be laundered in wine our fulfillment of the commandments must be imbued with joy. The way to achieve this joy is by studying the inner dimension of the Torah the teachings of Jewish mysticism (Kabbalah and Chassidism) for this dimension of the Torah inspires us to love G d and cleave to Him through observance of His commandments. It is for this reason that this aspect of the Torah is referred to as the wine of Torah. By Justice Michel M. J. Shore Before Jacob was gathered unto our ancestors, He blessed his sons and those of Joseph as his; Praying that each of their attributes be strengthened. No one simply is, who one is, thus sentenced. One is, who one can become, a work in progress. Ephraim, be fruitful, strive more, never less. Menashe, you know G-d, recall your fellow man. Reuven, become solid. Judah, a lion for Zion. Zevulon, travel the harbors of life safely. Issahar, use your gift of strength but sanely. Dan, judge to find truth without being aloof. Gad, shall vanquish. Asher shall be enriched and others lives sooth. Naftali, the spokesman, craft your words wisely. Joseph, separate yet strong. Benjamin shares unmiserly. DOSE OF INSPIRATION by Tzvi Freeman There are three ways by which we know the unknowable You: You create infinite universes filled with infinite creations, each creature designed with infinite wisdom and sustained by Your infinite power. And so, we know You as The Infinite. 6 MOSAIC EXPRESS THE UNKNOWABLE YOU Yet You are more than that. You remain ever-hidden, for if Your presence would be felt, not one thing would remain in existence before Your light. In truth, there is nothing else but You. And so, we know You as The Absolute Existence. Yet You are more than that. Within this world of concealment, within the discrete and limited bounds You have set for it, You are with us at every moment of need, alive within the small, seamless miracles of our lives, those we rarely notice. For You transcend knowing and not-knowing, revelation and concealment, miracle and nature, finite and infinite, being and not-being. And You are found in all of these at once. And so, we know You as You, for there is nothing else we can say.

An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the THE ONE HOUR MISSION RABBI YISRAEL HABER Erev Shabbos Parshas Vayechi, January 13, 2017 I grew up on Eastern Parkway in Crown Heights, Brooklyn in the 1950s. Though Crown Heights is mostly Chabad- Lubavitch, my family was not we were just plain Orthodox. However, due to the proximity and fame of the Rebbe, we would go see him twice a year during his public appearances. One of those times was Simchat Torah, when we would go to see the Rebbe and his chasidim dancing with the Torah into the wee hours of the morning. The other time was on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, when he conducted the Tashlich ceremony at the pond in the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Thousands of people would march with the Rebbe, singing their hearts out, and I recall this making a tremendous impression on me as a child. Those were my childhood memories of the Rebbe. When I grew up, I moved away from Crown Heights. I went to university, became a psychologist and, after getting married, became a U.S. Air Force chaplain in Alaska. In 1973, while on my way to take up my post for the first time, I drove across the country, with my wife Miriam, and stopped in St. Paul, Minnesota. There we met two Chabad emissaries, Rabbi Moshe Feller and Rabbi Gershon Grossbaum, who upon hearing about my deployment insisted that I inform the Rebbe. I obliged and wrote to the Rebbe about my upcoming mission. In my letter, I noted the problem of building in Alaska a mikveh the ritual pool, without which a Jewish community cannot function. The U.S. Army had allotted the money, but I could not find anyone who knew how to build a mikveh, at least not anyone willing to come to Alaska. When I finished writing the letter I handed it to them and they asked me if there was anything they could do to help me. I confided my problem to them and to my shock, the younger emissary, Rabbi Grossbaum told me that he makes a living doing exactly this designing mikvehs and overseeing their construction and he would love to help me. Here I am looking all over America for someone to build me a mikveh, I thought. And, before they even put the stamp on the letter to the Rebbe, my problem is solved! In 1975, while the mikveh was being built, we came to New York for a private audience with the Rebbe. We got preferential treatment and, even the yeshivah students came out to see the rabbi from Alaska (I guess wanting to see if I looked like an Eskimo). I was very, very nervous because I didn t know the Chabad protocol for a meeting with the Rebbe. I had a Lubavitcher friend who was going to tell me what to do, but we were invited into the Rebbe s office before my friend showed up! Going in, I had one request on my mind: a blessing for me and my wife to have children. We had been married for three years and had still not been blessed with any offspring. I remember my knees shaking when we entered the room, but otherwise I was in a fog, so I can t relate much of what followed. But I do recall the Rebbe beginning an earnest conversation with my wife. He asked her about what it took to have the stamina to be Jewish in Alaska, and he invited her to call upon him personally whenever she experienced any problems. He also asked her to speak to the Jewish women of Alaska about the mikveh that was being built, and what it means for a Jewish woman to immerse in a continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. 8 continued from reverse mikveh. She responded to my surprise that she would do whatever the Rebbe asked. When it came to me, the Rebbe asked if we distributed Jewish prayer books and copies of the Five Books of Moses. I said, No, we don t do that. Then, the Rebbe asked if we distributed Jewish educational materials so that little Jewish boys and girls of the Alaskan Range would be able to properly observe the holidays. I said, No, we don t do that. Then, the Rebbe asked if we visited the local prisons in order to connect with the Jewish inmates. I said, No, we don t do that. And then the Rebbe said, But from now on, you ll be doing all of this? I said, Yes, yes, from now on, we ll be doing all of this! Immediately a broad smile lit up the Rebbe s face and the only way I can describe this expression is this: It was as if I was looking at the sun rising in the middle of an Alaskan winter. In parting, the Rebbe blessed us with these words, May your sons grow up to be rabbis of big cities. (And this is exactly what happened.) When we returned home, there was a letter waiting for us addressed to Rabbi and Mrs. Yisrael Haber. The sender was Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, 770 Eastern Parkway, Brooklyn, New York. We opened the letter, and both I and my wife got very emotional. It was a two-page letter congratulating us on having the merit to be the first Jews to build a mikveh in Alaska. Shortly after that, my wife announced to me that we were going to have a special guest for Passover. I was puzzled, since Passover was months away, but that was her way of telling me that the Rebbe s blessing had come true she was pregnant, and the baby would be with us come Passover. When the baby was about to be born, things got complicated, and the doctors wanted to operate. I placed a call to the Rebbe, who said, Don t do anything. May we hear good news. I told this to my wife, who responded, We will follow the Rebbe s advice. We had a fight with the doctors, but we prevailed. After some tense moments of unusual activity, the baby s vital signs returned to normal, and no special intervention was necessary. And two hours before the Rebbe s own birthday that year, our first son, Meir Moshe, was born. In 1978, we had a second audience with the Rebbe. At that time, we told the Rebbe that we wanted to move to Israel. After we assured the Rebbe that out replacement would carry-on the work we started in Alaska, he gave us his blessing. Two years later, when we came to see him again, he asked us to briefly return to Alaska even for one hour, he said. Though I didn t understand why, I did as he asked. During my brief visit to Anchorage, two Jewish lawyers from Philadelphia showed up. They were working with Eskimos on issues concerning the oil pipeline. One of them was in mourning for his mother and needed to say Kaddish. It turned out that I was an essential part of the quorum of ten Jewish men without which he couldn t recite the blessing. I organized the minyan and, after we finished praying, I made sure that the group would continue gathering together even after I left. They did carry on, and this minyan has actually continued until the Chabad emissary, Rabbi Yosef Greenberg, moved there and established a permanent synagogue. I think it s safe to assume that this is why the Rebbe told me I needed to be in Alaska for even for one hour. And only he would know. Rabbi Yisrael Haber and his wife Miriam have been serving as Chabad emissaries in the Golan Heights, Israel, for the past thirty-four years. Rabbi Haber was interviewed in his home in September of This week in. > , the Naroler Rebbe, Rabbi Chaim Myer Yechiel Shapira, visited the Rebbe.
