ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: In this week s reading, Bo, the last three plagues Locust, Darkness, and Death of the Firstborn are inflicted upon the Egyptians. Moses commands the Israelites concerning the Paschal offering and the laws of the Seder. After the final plague, Pharaoh unconditionally releases the Israelites from his land. leave behind their cattle. Moses refused the condition. Pharaoh sent Moses away, warning him to never appear in his presence again, for on the day that you see my face, you shall die! Moses agreed, but not before he delivered a final message that G-d relayed to him at that moment. G-d told Moses that he would visit one more plague upon Egypt, after which Pharaoh will actually drive the Israelites from his land. Parenthetically, at that time G-d also instructed Moses to ask the Israelites to borrow from their Egyptian neighbors jewels, silver and gold. The Israelites complied, and the Egyptians readily lent out their valuables. Fourth Aliyah: Moses delivered G-d s warning to Pharaoh: At midnight, I will go out in the midst of Egypt. Every firstborn in the land of Egypt will die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the slave woman... G-d then gave the Israelites their first mitzvah, that of determining the New Moon (Rosh Chodesh) each month and establishing a lunar calendar. G-d also told Moses to instruct the Israelites to designate a (Continued on page 4) First Aliyah: Plague Eight: At G-d s behest, Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and delivered a warning: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, so that they can worship Me! They informed Pharaoh that if he does not allow the Israelites to go, Egypt will be attacked by a plague of locusts. After Moses and Aaron left, Pharaoh s servants begged him to allow the Israelites to leave. Don t you yet know that Egypt is lost? they argued. Pharaoh called back Moses and Aaron, and offered to allow the Israelites to leave provided that they leave behind their children as security. Moses and Aaron refused the offer, and Pharaoh stubbornly refused to allow the Israelites to go. Second Aliyah: Moses stretched out his hands, and swarms of locusts swept down on Egypt. They consumed absolutely every blade of grass, and all the crops. Pharaoh beseeched Moses to pray to G-d for the removal of the locusts, promising to then release the Israelites. Moses prayed, and no sooner had a wind carried the locusts back to the Red Sea than Pharaoh changed his mind yet again. Plague Nine: A frightful darkness descended upon Egypt. For days, the entire nation was incapacitated by the debilitating pitch darkness. But for all the children of Israel, there was light in their dwellings. Third Aliyah: Pharaoh summoned Moses again, offering to release the Israelites if they MOSAIC EXPRESS 3

The Israelites were to sacrifice this lamb and consume it, together with matzah and bitter herbs, on the eve of the fifteenth of Nissan. The blood of the lamb was to be smeared on the lintels and doorposts of the Israelite residences, and all inside those homes would be spared when G-d descended to smite the Egyptian firstborn. G-d also instructed that for all future generations this day would signal the beginning of the seven -day holiday of Passover, during which no leaven may be eaten or possessed. 4 MOSAIC EXPRESS Fifth Aliyah: Moses gathered the Israelite elders and conveyed to them G-d s instructions. Sixth Aliyah: Plague Ten: At the stroke of midnight, G-d slew all the Egyptian firstborn. No Egyptian home was spared, and Egypt erupted in a great outcry. Pharaoh awoke and raced to Moses, and begged him to take the Israelites and leave. The Egyptians pressured the Israelites to leave as soon as possible, and the Israelites complied. Equipped with all the valuables they had borrowed from the Egyptians, and provisions for the way dough that was baked before having time to rise the Israelites left Egypt at midday of the fifteenth of Nissan. This section concludes with some more rules that pertain to the Paschal offering. Seventh Aliyah: G-d gave the Israelites several mitzvot: 1) All male Israelite firstborn were henceforth sanctified to G-d. 2) Eat matzah on Passover. 3) Recount the story of the Exodus at the Passover Seder. 4) Bring all male firstborn of kosher animals as sacrifices. 5) Redeem all male firstborn donkeys for a sheep which is given to a kohen (priest). 6) Don tefillin on the head and arm.

DOSE OF INSPIRATION HYPER-FAITH IS YOUR CAR LEASE UP? Do not return it so fast!!!! I ll take care of your buy-back and put in your pocket. 6 MOSAIC EXPRESS by Tzvi Freeman We are more than believers. We are believers in believing. We know the power of holding to one s convictions and have perfect faith it will succeed. Call Patrick Roche PARSHA INSIGHTS From the book Daily Wisdom By Moshe Wisnefsky FOR THE CHILDREN G-d then told the Jews that they must celebrate the anniversary of the Exodus every year as the holiday of Passover. A central feature of this celebration would be the retelling of the story of the Exodus to the children. ו ה גּ ד תּ ל ב נ בּ יּוֹם ה הוּא ל אמ ר וגו': (שמות יג:ח) You must tell your child on that day. Exodus 13:8 Interestingly, the commandment to retell the story of the Exodus which is the source for the annual Passover Seder is given in the context of describing the child who does not know how to ask, the most immature of all the four types of children to whom we must tailor our description of the Exodus. This teaches us that our duty to retell the Exodus applies mainly to this uninitiated child. We must find the words to inspire even this type of child with gratitude to G-d for liberating us from Egypt and from all past, present, future, personal, and collective Egypts. This is so because the Exodus from Egypt was absolute: not one Jew remained in Egypt. Since the Exodus was so allencompassing, the transmission of its message must also encompass each and every individual that can possibly understand it, even if this takes extraordinary effort. By ensuring that even the child who does not know how to ask understands the meaning of the Exodus, we ensure that the other children will understand it, too, much as lifting up the bottom of any structure automatically raises the rest of the structure, as well. WEEKLY RIDDLE BO Questions: 1. Which name of a plague from Parshas Va'erah is also mentioned in this parsha? (2 answers) 2. In this parsha, where is an animal hoof mentioned? 3. In this parsha, where is a dog mentioned? What other two places in the Torah is a dog mentioned? Last Week s Answers: 1. Who is the ancestor of every king from the Kingdom of Judah, and every High Priest except for one? Aminadav, the father of Nachshon and Elisheva (the wife of Aaron), is an ancestor of King David (Ruth 4:20) and of every High Priest except for Aaron (Exodus 6:23). 2. In this parsha, which person has the same name as an ancient city in the Land of Israel? Chevron, an ancient city in Israel, is also the name of the third son of Kehas (Exodus 6:18). 3. Which body parts are referred to in this parsha? (7 answers) This parsha refers to: arm, hand, heart, palm of a hand, eyes, finger, lips. (1) Hashem informs Moshe that He will redeem the Jews "with an outstretched arm" (Exodus 6:6). (2) Hand is mentioned several times, mostly regarding the hand of Hashem that will punish the Egyptians (e.g. Exodus 7:4) (3) Heart appears several times in reference to Pharaoh's "hardened heart" (Exodus 7:3 is the first place). (4) Moshe informs Pharaoh that he will spread out the palms of his hands to stop the plague of hail (Exodus 9:29). (5) Moshe is told by Hashem to take a handful of ashes and throw them skyward in front of Pharaoh's eyes (Exodus 7:8). (6) The Egyptian magicians admit that the plague of lice is from "the finger of God" (Exodus 8:15). (7) Moshe refers to himself as having "blocked lips" (Exodus 6:17). AND FINALLY... A man and his wife are sitting in the living room. He says to her: Just so you know I never want to live in a vegetative state dependent on some machine. If that ever happens, just pull the plug. His wife gets up and unplugs the TV.

An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the DIVINE CHANGE OF PLANS MR. Erev Shabbat Parshat Bo, January 11, 2019 Issue 313 My involvement with Chabad started in 1974 while I was a student at the University of Michigan. One day, as I was walking through campus, a bearded man wearing a black hat approached me and asked, Pardon me, are you Jewish? When I answered in the affirmative, he invited me to Yom Kippur services. This man was Rabbi Aharon Goldstein, the director of the Chabad House in Ann Arbor, and I went on to study Torah with him over the next couple of years, becoming more religiously involved. However, I was still undecided whether becoming fully Torah observant was for me. Additionally, I was fluctuating between two worlds academia and business uncertain whether to pursue a degree in psychology or follow one of my other talents and interests, the chief of which was cooking (a true passion of mine). While in the midst of this confusion, I decided to write to the Rebbe, asking several questions about life. In his response, he began May G-d grant you the fulfillment of your heart s desires for good. I took that to mean that what is important in making a decision such as this is following what feels right in one s heart. The Rebbe encouraged me further by mentioning the assurance of Talmudic sages, seek and you shall find, which means that success requires effort but, as I discovered, even a little effort can go a long way. In his inimitable way, the Rebbe was able to get me to focus on what I really wanted to do. And at that time, I expressed myself best through cooking, so I ended up operating a kosher restaurant in the Chabad House in Ann Arbor called Jacob s Table. In my letter, I also told the Rebbe that, if I ever become religious, I would want to follow the ways of my ancestors who were not chasidim, and I added, I do not hold by any Rebbe now. My allegiance is to the Yiddishkeit with which I grew up. To this the Rebbe responded with a brilliant explanation of what is the role of a Rebbe: Of course, what is expected of you, as of every Jew, is that the daily life and conduct should be in accordance with the Torah of Life, and this is the very essence of Yiddishkeit. However, inasmuch as the Torah is described as longer than the earth and wider than the seas it is normal that no individual, however proficient he is in Torah and mitzvot, and however educated he is, isolate himself from others from whom he can learn a better and deeper understanding of Torah, at any rate, in those areas where he has not yet attained the highest level. This is the function of a Rebbe, a teacher, and instructor who have in their sphere of learning devoted more time and attained a higher level of knowledge, etc. continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in over 1,500 videotaped interviews conducted to date. While we have done our utmost to authenticate these stories, they reflect the listener s recollection and interpretation of the Rebbe s words. mystory@jemedia.org myencounterblog.com Copyright, Jewish Educational Media, 2019

continued from reverse I showed this letter to one of my friends Rabbi Zev Gopin, the Chabad emissary at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore and he said to me, Herschel, do you realize that in this letter the Rebbe is essentially asking you to become a chasid? I hadn t looked at it that way but, once I did, responding positively became obvious. Indeed, in 1979, when I moved to New York and started dating for marriage, it was the Rebbe to whom I wrote for advice. In one instance, the Rebbe responded by asking if this young woman was willing to cover her hair after marriage as Torah instructs, but she was not, so the relationship ended. In another instance, the Rebbe responded that this was a good match. I had been undecided, but the Rebbe s encouragement helped me realize that this young woman was my true soulmate. The Rebbe gave me clarity because that s what a Rebbe does. He also advised me that, since the woman who would become my wife was the daughter of a Kohen, she deserved to marry a Torah scholar. So he suggested that I at least learn something from the Talmud. He wrote: If she is the daughter of a Kohen, [you] should master the content of one tractate it can also be done in English and one of the small tractates, such as Kallah, etc. I followed that up with a question, asking if I should pursue full-time studies in yeshivah or go to work. The Rebbe responded that I should go to work but that I should have fixed times for learning, which would also be beneficial for my livelihood and, additionally, if I have more available time, I should learn more Torah. From that time until this day, I have scrupulously adhered to this advice. After a number of years in the catering business, which included a venture that promoted healthy eating, I returned to my other interest psychology. I started a program in the New York State prisons called Healthy Strategies for Successful Living, which was based on chasidic teachings. And then I got the idea of starting a wellness center. The Rebbe gave me a blessing for it, and this has led to my career in healing. So, you see, for someone who started out determined not to hold by a Rebbe, I not only became a chasid, but I have led a life that is guided by the Rebbe s wisdom. And I wouldn t have had it any other way. Herschel Lazaroff is the director of the Center for the Advancement of Creativity and Human Potential based in Monsey, New York, and a promoter of healing techniques based on Torah, Kabbalah and chasidic teachings. He was interviewed in July of This week in. > , in a public address, the Rebbe mentioned the common observation that when parents are lacking something, they ensure that their children don t experience the same shortcoming. However, which areas of the child s life the parents choose to advance, depends on the parents priorities. If they try to improve their children s spiritual welfare, it is really a reflection of their own desire for spiritual growth. The Rebbe concluded that this is one of the explanations for the obligation of parents to educate their children in the Torah way, although underage children have no requirement to perform mitzvot Shvat 1. 9 LA SIDRA DE LA SEMAINE PARCHAT BO SAMEDI 12 JANVIER CHEVAT 5779 VIVRE AVEC LA PARACHA BO Les trois dernières plaies accablent l Egypte : une armée de sauterelles dévore les cultures et la végétation ; une obscurité épaisse, palpable enveloppe le pays et tous les premiers-nés de l Egypte sont tués aux coups de minuit, le 15 du mois de Nissan. Incroyable!
