If you don t believe, then why does not believing concern you? SHEMOT ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: This week's Torah reading, Shemot, begins the Book of Exodus. Pharaoh issues harsh decrees against the Israelites, beginning decades of Jewish suffering and slavery. Moses is born and raised in the Egyptian royal palace. After killing an Egyptian, Moses escapes to Midian and marries. G d appears to him in a burning bush and demands that he return to Egypt to redeem the Israelites. Moses returns to Egypt with the intention of freeing the Jewish people. First Aliyah: Jacob's sons all died. Jacob's descendents in Egypt, however, were "fruitful and swarmed and increased and became very very strong." A new Pharaoh arose, and he resolved to find a solution to the "Israelite problem." He proposed to afflict the Israelites and impose slave labor upon them, thus preventing them from multiplying. He implemented the plan, and the Israelites were forced to construct storage cities for Pharaoh. "But as much as they would afflict them, so did they multiply and so did they gain strength." Pharaoh then summoned the Hebrew midwives and instructed them to kill all the Hebrew sons that they delivered. The righteous midwives feared G d, however, and defied Pharaohs order. Second Aliyah: Pharaoh called the midwives to task for not following orders. They answered that the Hebrew women were skilled in midwifery and delivered their babies before they even arrived. G d rewarded the midwives for their bravery. Pharaoh then commanded the Egyptians to cast all newborn males into the Nile. Moses was born. His mother, who feared for her baby's life, put him into a waterproofed basket and set him afloat in the Nile. Pharaoh's daughter came to bathe, and took the child as her own. Moses' sister Miriam, who observed the entire episode, offered to bring a Hebrew nursemaid for the child, and when Pharaoh's daughter agreed to the suggestion, Miriam called the child's mother. Moses' mother nursed the child and after he was weaned brought him back to Pharaoh's daughter. Third Aliyah: Moses was raised in Pharaoh's palace. When he matured, he went out one day and saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew. Moses slew the Egyptian. Word of his deed reached Pharaoh, and Moses was compelled to flee. He escaped to Midian where he married Zipporah, the daughter of Jethro. They gave birth to a son, Gershom. Back in Egypt, meanwhile, the plight of the Israelite slaves was worsening. They cried out to G d, and He remembered the covenant He had made with their forefathers. Fourth Aliyah: Moses was shepherding Jethro's flocks in the wilderness when he arrived at the "mountain of G d." There he saw a bush burning, yet it was not being consumed by the fire. When he approached to investigate the phenomenon, G d called out to him. G d declared that He has seen the Israelites' afflictions, and has decided to deliver them from their Egyptian masters. Fifth Aliyah: G d gave Moses specific instructions: He was to gather the Israelite elders and inform them that G d had remembered them and would now rescue them from Egypt and bring them to a Land of Milk and Honey. Then he was to approach Pharaoh and request permission to leave along with the Israelites. G d informed Moses that Pharaoh would not accede to this request but the redemption would come nonetheless, after G d will smite Egypt with a strong arm. At that point the Israelites would leave with much riches. G d gave Moses three miracles to perform before the Israelites to prove that he was sent by G d. When Moses protested that he was not suited to be G d's messenger due to his speech impediment, G d assigned his brother Aaron to be his spokesperson. Sixth Aliyah: Moses took his wife and two sons and headed for Egypt. G d charged Moses to warn Pharaoh: "So said G d, 'My firstborn son is Israel. So I say to you, send out My son so that he will worship Me. And if you refuse to send him out, behold, I will slay your firstborn son.'" En route to Egypt, Moses' wife rescued her husband from divine wrath by performing a circumcision on their son. Moses met Aaron, who had come from Egypt to greet him, and together they went to Egypt, (Continued on page 5) 2 l Mosaic Express

4 App to Spread the Light By Menachem Posner DECEMBER osef Tiefenbrun, a student at the Y Central Chabad Yeshivah in Brooklyn, N.Y., got something new around Chanukah time. He has a new web app to connect people he meets, wherever he is, with Chabad rabbis and services, wherever in the world they may be. Already, he says he has made six connections this month and plans on making many more. The app, ChabadLink, allows people to quickly and easily refer acquaintances to Chabad rabbis or institutions with just a few taps on their mobile devices. Our goal, says Meir Simcha Kogan, managing director at Chabad.org, which developed the mobile web app, is that if you meet someone on a plane or in the mall and you think they would benefit from connecting with their local Chabad, you should be able to do so with ease. After inputting the potential connection s basic contact information, the users employ what Kogan calls a revolutionary new search to locate the most appropriate Chabad representative or service through searching by last name, location, college campus or organizational name. Once the connection is made, both people receive an message notifying them about one another. #Sharethelights Chanukah awareness campaign of the Jewish Youth Initiative. When I would meet Jewish students, I would just whip out my smartphone and use the app to send both the student and the Chabad rabbi on their campus each other s contact info, says Tiefenbrun. Another aspect he found useful was the ability to track his referrals, which allowed him to see in real time those who did connect. The web app available in eight languages was born out of a close partnership between Chabad.org and the Jewish Youth Initiative, a division of Merkos Suite 302. Its functionality is expected to be a boon to Chabad on Campus shluchim (ambassadors), who can expect to receive referrals from students hometown Chabad representatives as they head off to college. Conversely, four years later, they will be able to link their departing students with Chabad representatives where those young people are headed. MTC Kolel for Men CHAVRUSA/ONE-ON-ONE LEARNING ON THE SUBJECT OF YOUR CHOICE or sign up for the exciting DO-IT-YOURSELF GEMARA GAIN THE SKILLS REQUIRED TO LEARN TALMUD ON YOUR OWN Mondays and Thursdays 8:00 9:15 pm This is definitely an exciting tool that will streamline the transition for my students as they leave university back to the real world, says Rabbi Levi Schectman of Chabad of Wesleyan in Middletown, Conn. Geared for the wider public, the app is meant for use beyond Chabad representatives. Its ease and utility allow someone not familiar with the vast infrastructure of Chabad centers worldwide to find the right person for a referral with minimal effort. How do people use the app? They can go to or easier to remember, on their smartphone or tablet. This is part of our broader vision, explains Rabbi Moshe Kotlarsky, vice chairman of Merkos L Inyonei Chinuch, the educational arm of Chabad- Lubavitch, which is to ensure that every encounter with a young Jewish person becomes a long-term relationship with Judaism and the Jewish people. This app is a great step in that direction. for information and to reserve contact Rabbi Levi x231 - levi@themtc.com Tiefenbrun first heard about the app in a briefing before he embarked on a road trip up the West Coast from San Diego, Calif., to Washington state in a menorah -festooned RV as part of the 4 l Mosaic Express

5 (Continued from page 2) gathered the elders and performed the wondrous signs that G d had given Moses. Seventh Aliyah: Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and presented G d's demand. Pharaoh mocked the request and instructed the Egyptian taskmasters to increase the Israelite slaves' workload. The Israelites were unable to meet Pharaoh's new demands, and were viciously beaten as a result. Moses addressed G d: "Why have You mistreated this people? Why have You sent me? Since I have come to Pharaoh to speak in Your name, he has mistreated this people, and You have not saved Your people." G d responded: "Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh, for with a mighty hand he will send them out..." 7 ב ה An inspiring story for your Shabbos table תשע ד, שבת פרשת שמות י ח טבת Shabbos Parshas Shemos, December 21, 2013 HERE S my STORY A HIGHER NETWORK MR. JERRY LEVINE I learn that my wife was pregnant with twins. I didn t know it at the time. During the pregnancy, the doctors told us that one of the children was struggling with getting nutrition in the womb he was much smaller than the other and that they might have to do an emergency procedure. So I wrote to the Rebbe. I received an answer back from the Rebbe s secretary, Rabbi Binyomin Klein. I was in New York so I saw Rabbi Klein in person and he said to me, Do you want to know what the Rebbe said when I gave him your letter? He said Eh! and he dismissed it with a wave of his hand. So I went back to my wife and I said, Don t worry. We don t have to do anything. Everything is gonna be fine. And thank G-d, it was. M y first meeting with the Rebbe is a blur. I remember coming into Chabad Headquarters at 770 Eastern Parkway. It was unlike anything that any nice Jewish boy like me, from a secular background, could ever imagine. What I especially remember out of this blur is standing in the midst of all this tumult in front of a man who had this big smile and this warm, amazing face and these incredible eyes that sparkled. He was warm and engaging, although he was the center of all this attention. I want to say that he was a "celebrity", but I don't think that's the right word, although in a sense he was that, and when I met him, coming from my world - the world of TV news - that's how I perceived him. That was the first time Another time that I met the Rebbe, my wife was pregnant and I remember asking him to give me a blessing that everything should go well with the pregnancy and with the child. He did. First, he gave me a dollar, and he said this was for success. And then he gave me two dollars, and he said this was for the children. I didn t understand why he gave me two. And only later did The twins were not born early; they were born late. One weighed seven-and-a-half pounds, and the other five-and-ahalf pounds. Completely normal. Now, they are both graduating from Jewish day school where they ve gone all their life, and they re much more religious than I am, thank G-d. But my most dramatic encounter with the Rebbe came in 1987, while I was working as an anchorman for Miami s Channel 10 News. At that time, I was approached by Chabad to work with the Aleph Institute, which serves the religious needs of Jewish servicemen, as well as Jews in the American correctional system. I was intrigued by this idea. A part of me thought that this was an unusual opportunity to make a real difference, but a part of me wasn t totally sure if this was for me. Rabbi Shalom Ber Lipskar, the founder of Aleph, suggested that I write a letter to the Rebbe and ask for his guidance. So I did. I wrote a long letter to the Rebbe telling him what I was doing now and what I hoped to accomplish. A short while later I received a phone call from Rabbi Lipskar telling me that the answer from the Rebbe had arrived, and that I should come right away. I was at work at the time when the call came, so I went over to my assignment editor in the newsroom, and I said, I continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in the 800 videotaped interviews conducted to date. Please share your comments and suggestions. mystory@jemedia.org

8 continued from reverse have an emergency, I have to leave. I took off and I came to Rabbi Lipskar s office. I remember that when I walked in he was seated behind his desk, studying this little piece of paper with great intensity. And he said, I m very puzzled by this answer. I can t figure it out although I ve been trying to for a long time. What does it say? It says: Tell me all your names. This was the answer, but clearly not the answer that I had been expecting. I had been expecting some kind of intellectual answer to my question, but not this. This was totally out of the box. Tell me all your names? So I asked Rabbi Lipskar, What does it mean? He had no idea, but he offered, Maybe it means that the Rebbe somehow doesn t recognize your soul or something. Maybe you should ask you mother what your Hebrew name is. Now, I was positive that I knew my Hebrew name Yosef. And I had signed the letter to the Rebbe with it, followed by my father s name Yosef ben Tzvi Hersh Leib HaLevi. But I agreed to ask my mother, even if I felt all this was silly in a way. So, immediately from Rabbi Lipskar s office, I went to see my Mom and I told her what happened. Hearing this story, my mother was just as perplexed as I was. I said, I know, it doesn t make any sense. I know my Hebrew name it s Yosef. She agreed, Yes. Yosef Mordechai. I said, What?! She repeated it, Yosef Mordechai. Mordechai? You never told me that! I replied incredulously. I went back to Rabbi Lipskar and told him that my name was not Yosef but Yosef Mordechai ben Tzvi Hersh Leib HaLevi. And he said, Write another letter to the Rebbe and sign it with this name. I wrote another letter asking if I should leave my job and go to work for the Aleph Institute. And I got an answer, which said, Ask your best friend what they think. So I asked my mother who I felt was my best friend. We talked it over, and eventually I went to work for the Aleph Institute. Thinking it over now, years later, I just want to say what I took away from this experience: In honor of our dear parents Moshe Melech and Gutte of blessed memory by their children Leah and Moshe You can help us record more testimonies by dedicating future editions of Here s My Story Any other Jewish leader, who got a letter from an anchorman for a major TV station wanting to go into public service, would have thought: What is the marketing potential for our organization here? How could this person help us with video news releases or press coverage? In what manner can this person help our organization grow? But the Rebbe wasn t thinking about any of that. The Rebbe was thinking: Here s a Jewish boy that doesn t know his name. So I felt like the Rebbe was in a completely different category and was a totally different kind of leader, one who no matter how far away you were from him was still able to reach through the ether and touch you on a very, very profound level.
