IS YOUR CAR LEASE UP? Do not return it so fast!!!! I ll take care of your buy-back and put in your pocket. Call Patrick Roche ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: This week's reading, Vayelech, recounts the events of the final day of Moses' terrestrial life. Moses transferred leadership to Joshua and wrote a Torah scroll which he handed over to the Levites. Moses commanded the Israelites to gather following every Sabbatical year, and informed them of the suffering which will be their lot when they will abandon the laws of the Torah. First Aliyah: Moses addressed the people, saying that he is 120 years of age on that day, and he is not permitted to cross the Jordan River together with them. Instead, Joshua will lead them, and G-d will go before them and destroy their enemies. Second Aliyah: Moses continued his talk: G-d will vanquish the inhabitants of Canaan as He did the Emorites and Bashanites. Moses enjoined the Israelites to be strong and not fear their enemies. Third Aliyah: Moses summoned Joshua and told him to be strong and courageous, for G-d will be going before him and will not forsake him. Moses then wrote the entire Torah and gave it to the Kohnaim (priests) and the Israelite elders. Fourth Aliyah: Moses gives the commandment of Hakhel (assembly), whereby every seven years, during the holiday of Sukkot which follows the Sabbatical year, all men, women, and children assemble and the king publicly reads sections of the Torah. Fifth Aliyah: G-d commanded Moses to enter the Tabernacle together with Joshua. G-d appeared to them both and informed them that a time will come when the Israelites will abandon G-d and stray after alien gods. At that time, G-d will hide His countenance from the nation, and they will be subjected to much evils and troubles. Therefore, G-d says, "Write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness..." This 'song' is narrated in next week's Torah reading. Sixth Aliyah: When G-d's wrath will find the Israelites as a consequence of their evil actions, they will claim that the misfortunes are befalling them because G-d has abandoned them. At that time, the song which Moses and Joshua wrote will bear testimony that these events are in fact punishment for their sinful behavior. Seventh Aliyah: Moses took the freshly concluded Torah scroll and gave it to the Levites. He instructed them to place it beside the Ark which contained the Tablets. Moses then gathered the entire nation to hear the song, wherein he would call upon the heavens and earth to be witnesses that the Israelites were forewarned regarding their fate. SHABBAT SHUVAH The Shabbat between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur is called Shabbat Shuvah, "Shabbat of Return." The name derives from the Haftarah (reading from the prophets) for this Shabbat, which opens with the words (Hosea 14:2), "Return O Israel unto the L-rd your G- d..." Occurring in the "Ten Days of Repentance" (see "Laws & Customs" for Tishrei 3), it is a most auspicious time to rectify the failings and missed opportunities of the past and positively influence the coming year. AND FINALLY... I asked my French friend if she likes to play video games. She said, Wii. MOSAIC EXPRESS 3

EXTENDING A HAND IN AID The yartzeit of Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson ( ), mother of the Rebbe, is commemorated on Tishrei 6, this year September 15 By Eli Rubin Chabad.org The Rebbe came of age in the midst of World War I, which broke out less than a year before his Bar Mitzvah was celebrated. Jews close to the war front were forced by government decree to flee eastward, and the Rebbe s hometown, Yekaterinoslav (present day Dnepropetrovsk) in eastern Ukraine, received a large influx of refugees. The Rebbe later recalled how his mother, Rebbetzin Chana, was at the forefront of the communal effort to provide aid and relief to these unfortunate individuals, many of whom arrived in the city with no means to support themselves: Generally I was occupied with my studies, and I was not so involved in what was happening in the house. I did not ask what was going on etc. But there were extraordinary circumstances that one could not help but notice It was a wondrous thing, I never saw such involvement and vigorous activism, whether day or night. My mother's work was so outstanding that it was etched on my mind for the rest of my life. What the Rebbe did not mention was the compassion that he himself showed to a young refugee whose parents had died of hunger. Having nowhere else to go, Yona Kesse - who would later serve as a member of the Israeli Knesset and as the Mapai party secretary - began to frequent the synagogue where Menachem Mendel Schneerson, just a few years his senior, habitually studied. After a few days, the older boy interrupted his studies to approach Yona and enquire about his situation. Hearing his tale of woe and of his desire to immigrate to the Holy Land, Menachem Mendel took Yona home with him and explained the situation to his mother. Kesse s wife Carmella described Rebbetzin Chana as an excellent women, overflowing with warmth and generosity who took in her husband, bathed him, fed him and clothed him, and decreed that Yona would stay in her house until he found a way to travel to the Holy Land. According to Carmella, Kesse stayed with the Schneerson family for five or six years, and would talk about his experience often. The friendship shown to him by the Schneerson family restored his faith in humanity, and throughout his life he kept in touch with the Rebbe, visiting him every time he traveled to New York. His memories of his stay in the Rebbe s home, vividly recalling the atmosphere of the post war years, were broadcast on Israeli television in 1973: The house was an authentic chassidic home, his father was a great Torah scholar, the rabbi of the city, and exerted great influence on a large group of Jews. Don t forget that this was already the Bolshevik era, with the onset of religious persecution etc., and he carried his rabbinic responsibilities with strength and pride. TEN DAYS OF REPENTANCE The 10-day period beginning on Rosh Hashanah and ending on Yom Kippur is known as the "Ten Days of Repentance"; this is the period, say the sages, of which the prophet speaks when he proclaims (Isaiah 55:6) "Seek G-d when He is to be found; call on Him when He is near." Psalm 130, Avinu Malkeinu and other special inserts and additions are included in our daily prayers during these days. 4 MOSAIC EXPRESS

PARSHA INSIGHTS KIDS CORNER VAYELECH Questions: 1. What is unique about this parsha with regard to the annual Torah reading cycle in the synagogue? 2. In this parsha, Moshe passes away at the age of 120 years. Where from the Torah do we see an explicit verse that 120 years is an appropriate age to die? 3. What holiday is explicitly referred to in this parsha? Last Week s Answers: 1- This parsha begins with a description of the Jewish people "standing" (netzavim) before Hashem. What 4 other places in the Torah are people described as "standing" (netzavim)? (1) The angels who come to Avraham in parshas Vayerah are standing (netzavim) over him (Genesis 18:2). (2) In parshas Vayigash, men are standing near Yosef when he wishes to reveal himself to his brothers (Genesis 45:1). (3) In parshas Shemos, when Moshe and Aharon leave Pharaoh after their unsuccessful meeting, men are standing outside the palace waiting to meet them (Exodus 5:20). (4) In parshas Korach, Dathan and Aviram stand outside their tents when Moshe comes to speak to them (Numbers 16:27). 2. Which two ancient professions appear in this parsha? The professions of a wood-chopper and a water-carrier are in Deuteronomy 29: In what context is salt mentioned in this parsha? What 3 other places in the Torah is salt referred to? Moshe states that when later generations view the destruction of the land, they will see "sulphur and salt, a conflagration of the entire Land" (Deut. 29:22). Elsewhere in the Torah: (1) Salt is mentioned in parshas Vayera when Lot's wife turns to look at the destruction of Sodom and turns into a pillar of salt (Genesis 19:26). (2) In parshas Vayikra, we are commanded to add salt to every offering (Leviticus 2:13). (3) In parshas Bamidbar, the eternal covenant with the kohanim is referred to as a "covenant of salt" (Numbers 18:19). From the book Daily Wisdom By Moshe Wisnefsky BEING UNITED WITH THE TORAH Moses then instructed the Levites to place the Torah scroll that he would soon write in the Ark of the Covenant, together with the Tablets of the Covenant that he received at Mount Sinai. ל ק ח א ת ס פ ר ה תּוֹר ה ה זּ ה ו שׂ מ תּ ם א תוֹ מ צּ ד וגו': (דברים לא:כו) [Moses told the Levites,] Take this Torah scroll and place it alongside [the Tablets of Testimony]. Deuteronomy 31:26 Thus, the Ark in the Tabernacle contained the Torah both engraved in stone and written on parchment. The difference between engraved and written letters is that the engraved letters are part and parcel of the stone, whereas written letters are not part of the parchment but added to it. Thus, engraved letters express our intrinsic connection to the Torah, whereas written letters allude to how we preserve our connection to the Torah even during our mundane lives, when we think of ourselves as being separate from the Torah. The presence of both the engraved Torah and the inscribed Torah within the Ark indicates that we must first experience our intrinsic connection with the Torah and then carry that experience with us into our mundane lives. DOSE OF INSPIRATION UNREPENTING by Tzvi Freeman Beginning October RSVP: themtc.com/learn Do not repent. Repentance means to stop being bad and to become good. But your essential being is always good. The bad is only on the outside. So instead of repenting, return. Return to the essential self and to what is rightfully yours. MOSAIC EXPRESS 5

An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the WHEN I WON THE LOTTERY RABBI LEIB ZALMANOV ב ה ערב שבת פרשת וילך, ה תשרי, תשע ט Erev Shabbat Parshat Vayeilech, September 14, 2018 Issue 296 Iwas born in 1926 in Kursk, Russia. It was at the beginning of Soviet rule, but despite the difficulties involved, my parents made sure to give me a Jewish education. When I was ten years old, my parents managed to get a permit to leave Russia, and we came to the Israel, then the British Mandate for Palestine. There I continued my Torah studies. I was twenty-two years old when the State of Israel was established. I joined the Israeli army and served with the rabbinate of the IDF, eventually advancing to the position of officer in charge of religious affairs. My job description included supervising kashrut and overseeing prayers during Shabbat and holidays. On Rosh Hashanah, I blew the shofar for the soldiers, and on Passover I organized the Seder. I saw that if one had the will, one could gain much spiritual benefit from influencing soldiers within the framework of such a job. And indeed, the Rebbe encouraged me very much to take advantage of my position, and to use every means possible to strengthen the Torah observance among the soldiers. When I completed my compulsory service, I was invited to sign up for the standing army. I debated doing so because I had gotten married in the meanwhile, and this position necessitated my staying on the base for Shabbat and holidays not a convenient thing in my new status as a family man. But I didn t decide on my own. I wrote to the Rebbe and followed his advice to lengthen my service. Of course, I would report to the Rebbe about all the activities I was involved in as part of my role in the army, and I would get letters back from him, in which he encouraged me very much and urged me to do more. Before Chanukah, the Rebbe sent me coins Chanukah gelt to distribute to the soldiers who were participating in my classes. Before Passover, the Rebbe instructed me to make sure that every soldier would have some hand-made shmurah matzah. I raised the necessary sum and ordered several boxes of this special matzah in order to follow his instructions. Several times a year, the rabbinate of the IDF published a journal of Jewish studies called Machanayim and, encouraged by the Rebbe, I became involved in its publication. Several times I even inserted in it sections from the Rebbe s talks. The Rebbe showed much interest in these publications and expressed his desire to receive a copy of each issue for his library. After I completed my army service, the Rebbe wrote to me, asking that I continue to send him copies of Machanayim, and even urged me to supply specific issues that were missing from his collection. In 1953, the first lottery was held in Israel for a trip to continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in over 1,500 videotaped interviews conducted to date. While we have done our utmost to authenticate these stories, they reflect the listener s recollection and interpretation of the Rebbe s words. mystory@jemedia.org myencounterblog.com Copyright, Jewish Educational Media, 2018

continued from reverse see the Rebbe. Sixty-three chasidim participated in this lottery, each one paying fifteen liras not a small sum at that time and I won the lottery and became the Israeli representative who would go to visit the Rebbe. I was thrilled about this, but because I was still in the army, it was difficult for me to receive the necessary permits to go abroad. After much effort, I managed to obtain a travel permit, and my trip was set for the Hebrew month of Iyar, Before I left, I received several special instructions from the Rebbe. For instance, the Rebbe told me that, as the winner of the lottery, I should visit all the places where there were Chabad communities and institutions in Israel, in order to bring him personal regards from the people there. I felt that I was really representing the entire Chabad public in Israel, not only the sixty-three chasidim who had participated in the lottery. The Rebbe also wrote that during the time I was away, there could be no lapse in my duties and responsibilities. I had to make sure that there would be no lessening of Torah observance in the army due to my absence. The impression I received was that the Rebbe would agree to my trip only if this condition was fulfilled. Another instruction was not to travel to New York on Israeli ships, or on any ships owned by Jews or operated by Jewish workers, in order not to run into problems of traveling on Shabbat and thus benefitting from another Jew s violation of the holy day. In the end, I went by ship from Haifa to Marseille and, from there, flew to New York. The trip proved extremely costly, and the sum that was awarded to me for winning the raffle wasn t enough even for the cheapest ticket. I had to borrow money in order to make up the difference, but it was well worth it. During my visit in New York, the Rebbe treated me very warmly. In the middle of one of the gatherings that I participated in, the Rebbe declared, Since someone from the Israeli army is here, a person who is also a religious officer, and since it is customary in the army to sing marches, he should lead us in singing a march here as well At his invitation, I sang the well-known nigun called Napoleon s March. The Rebbe also gave me a bottle of vodka to use in making l chaim with army personnel. During that visit I also had a personal audience with the Rebbe. Among other things, the Rebbe encouraged me to use my speech-giving talent and to deliver talks to the soldiers on Jewish topics. He also advised me to speak generally about discipline and acceptance of authority, which are basic principles in the army, and to explain to the soldiers that this also applies to serving G-d, for we are engaged in a spiritual war against the evil inclination (yetzer hara) in everything connected to Torah observance. Another subject that came up concerned the letters that the Rebbe received from army personnel. During my activities in the army as an officer in charge of religious affairs, many soldiers asked me to write to the Rebbe about their personal matters, both material and spiritual. Some of them asked to write to the Rebbe following lectures I had given them on Judaism, in order to obtain deeper answers to questions that had come up. The Rebbe encouraged this and told me that I should tell them that any soldier who writes will, with G-d s help, receive an answer to his letter, even if it may take a while. They wrote and they received answers. Indeed, quite a few of those who wrote to the Rebbe ended up coming closer to Judaism and becoming more Torah observant. Some of them even became Chabad chasidim, closely connected to the Rebbe. Rabbi Leib Zalmanov ( ) was one of the veteran activists of the social service agency, Tzeirei Chabad, in Israel. He was interviewed in his home in Bnei Brak in August, לע נ ר ישראל יעקב וזוגתו מרת קריינא ע ה לאקשין ע י בניהם ר נחמן ור אברהם ומשפחתם שיחיו This week in. > , in a letter to an office building security guard, the Rebbe related in the name of the Previous Rebbe that people with such jobs should repeat words of Torah by heart while at work. The Rebbe recommended learning Psalms, Mishnayot and at least one chapter of Tanya by heart to recite as often as possible Tishrei 1.
