Dozens of commandments are then discussed in this week's reading. Among them: the prohibitions against offering sacrifices outside the Temple; consuming blood; incestuous, adulterous, or other forbidden relationships; various mandatory gifts for the poor; love for every Jew, prohibition against sorcery; honesty in business dealings; and sexual morality. First Aliyah: The High Priest is instructed to only enter the Holy of Holies chamber of the sanctuary once a year, on Yom Kippur; and even on this holiest day of the year, the entry into the Temple's inner sanctum must be accompanied by a special service and specific offerings which are detailed in this reading. The High Priest was only permitted to enter amidst a cloud of burning incense. Also, special white garments were worn by the High Priest on this day. While offering the day's sacrifices, the High Priest would "confess" on behalf of the entire nation, attaining atonement for the past year's sins. This section continues with a description of the "scapegoat" ceremony procedure. Second Aliyah: After concluding the order of the Yom Kippur service in the Temple, the Torah instructs us to observe Yom Kippur as a Day of Atonement when we must abstain from work and "afflict" ourselves. The Jews are then forbidden to offer sacrifices anywhere other than the Tabernacle or Temple. Third Aliyah: We are enjoined not to consume blood. When slaughtering fowl or undomesticated animals, we are commanded to cover their blood with earth. The Jews are admonished not to follow the depraved ways of the Egyptians and Canaanites. On this note, the Torah provides a list of prohibited sexual relationships. The list includes adultery, cohabiting with a menstruating woman, and forbidden close relatives. Fourth Aliyah: The prohibitions against homosexuality and bestiality are mentioned. The Jews are then warned that engaging in these forbidden relationships will result in their expulsion from the Land of Israel -- a holy land which cannot tolerate immoral behavior. G-d commands the Jewish people to be holy. This section then briefly discuses several laws: revering parents; observing the Shabbat; prohibitions against idolatry; the obligation to burn "leftover" sacrificial flesh; the obligation to leave certain parts of one's harvest for the poor; not to lie, cheat, withhold wages, swear falsely, curse or mislead another. Fifth Aliyah: More mitzvot: Not to pervert justice, gossip, be indifferent to a fellow's predicament, hate a fellow Jew, bear grudges, or take revenge. To reprimand a sinner, and to love every Jew. The following statutes are also given here: not to sow a field with two kinds of seed, wear a garment made of a mixture of wool and linen (shatnez), or crossbreed animals. The section also includes with the laws of one who commits adultery with a half-free maidservant. We are introduced to the laws of "orlah," the prohibition against eating the fruit of a new sapling for the first three years, and the obligation to sanctify the fruit of the fourth year. We are enjoined not to engage in witchcraft or prostitution, or tattoo our bodies. Men are instructed not to destroy the hair at the edges of their scalp or the corners of their beards. We are commanded to observe the Shabbat; respect G- d's sanctuary, Torah scholars and the elderly. Sixth Aliyah: We are commanded to love converts. We are also enjoined to be truthful in business dealing by maintaining honest weights and measures. The Torah prescribes capital punishment for one who worships Molech; a form of idolatry which required human sacrifices. The Torah also describes the punishment which will befall the nation if they neglect to punish Molech worshippers. Seventh Aliyah: The Torah sets the punishments for individuals who curse their parents and those who engage in prohibited sexual relations. We are instructed not to follow the customs and traditions of the heathens, and to be meticulous about eating only kosher foods. The Torah portion ends with an enjoinder that we be holy. AND FINALLY... I heard there s a new store called Moderation. They have everything there. MOSAIC EXPRESS 3

THIS WEEK S TORAH CLASS Iyar Sunday April A year after the Exodus, G-d instructed the people of Israel to bring the Passover offering on the afternoon of the fourteenth of Nissan, and to eat it that evening, roasted over the fire, together with matzah and bitter herbs, as they had done the previous year just before they left Egypt. There were, however, certain persons who had become ritually impure through contact with a dead body, and could not, therefore, prepare the Passover offering on that day. They approached Moses and Aaron... and they said:... Why should we be deprived, and not be able to present G-d s offering in its time, amongst the children of Israel? (Numbers 9:6 7). In response to their plea, G-d established the 14th of Iyar as a Second Passover (Pesach Sheni) for anyone who was unable to bring the offering on its appointed time in the previous month. The day thus represents the second chance achieved by teshuvah, the power of repentance and return. In the words of Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak of Lubavitch, The Second Passover means that it s never a lost case. It is customary to mark this day by eating matzah, shmurah matzah if possible A TALE OF TWO DOCTORS In explaining why Aaron was forbidden to enter at any time into the inner sanctum of the Sanctuary, Rashi employs a parable concerning an ill patient and the advice he receives from two doctors. This class will reveal the deeper meaning of this unusual parable and it s poignant message especially as it relates to the current Omer period. 6 PARSHA INSIGHTS From the book Daily Wisdom By Moshe Wisnefsky BRINGING LIFE TO THE COMMANDMENTS G-d then instructed Moses regarding the laws governing forbidden relations. G-d prefaced these laws by stating that their purpose is to enhance the Jewish people s lives and to refine them so they can be admitted into the afterlife. וּשׁ מ ר תּ ם א ת ח קּ ת י ו א ת מ שׁ פּ ט י א שׁ ר י ע שׂ ה א ת ם ה א ד ם ו ח י בּ ה ם וגו': (ויקרא יח:ה) You must safeguard My rules and My ordinances, which a person must do to live by them. Leviticus 18:5 The Hebrew phrase to live by them can also be read, in order to imbue them with life-force. This teaches us that not only do G-d s commandments enhance our lives; by observing them, we bring them to life. For example, even the most carefully crafted tefilin cannot accomplish their purpose thereby effecting a positive change in reality until a Jewish man wears them. Thus, we bring G-d s plan for creation to fruition through fulfilling His commandments. Of course, in order to enliven G-d s commandments, we ourselves must be alive, i.e., healthy, strong, happy, enthusiastic, and optimistic. DOSE OF INSPIRATION INNER ANXIETY by Tzvi Freeman Often, anxiety takes root because a person s external character is incompatible with his or her inner self. The anxiety may dwell upon other issues and obsessions but none of these are the true underlying cause. Most souls can tolerate a few inconsistencies. But others are sensitive to every nuance. 6 MOSAIC EXPRESS THE CHILD S ENVIRONMENT Most of the forbidden relations are prohibited on account of being incestuous. א ישׁ א ישׁ א ל כּ ל שׁ א ר בּ שׂ רוֹ ל א ת ק ר בוּ ל ג לּוֹת ע ר ו ה א נ י ה': (ויקרא יח:ו) No man may come near to any of his close relatives to uncover [their] nakedness. Leviticus 18:6 The patriarchs Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob observed the Torah s laws before they were formally given on Mount Sinai. Nonetheless, we have seen that Jacob s sons married their sisters. The reason for this was because society was so morally depraved in the patriarchs times that there were simply no suitable choices for marriage partners outside the family circle. In those early days, it was crucial to preserve the spiritual and moral integrity of the family that was being groomed to become the Jewish people. Therefore, in order to ensure that their children not inherit negative traits from unworthy mothers or absorb negative attitudes while being raised by these women, Abraham s male descendants were forced not to honor these prohibitions, which in any case would only become legally binding with the Giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. We learn from this how much care we should take to ensure that our children s upbringing and environment support and encourage their absorption of the Torah s teachings and values. As soon as some aspect of their lifestyle is not attuned to the purity of the essential self, the entire person is thrown off balance. That is why, for a Jew, being more careful about the mitzvot will often diminish anxiety. KIDS CORNER ACHAREI KEDOSHIM- Questions: 1. Which three parts of the Tabernacle are listed in this parsha, and in what context are they mentioned? 2. In what context is dirt mentioned in this parsha? What other Torah command involves taking some dirt? In what context does dirt (afar) first appear in the Torah? 3. In this parsha, part of the service of the High Priest on Yom Kippur involves two goats (seir izim). In what context does a goat (seir izim - not gadi izim) first appear in the Torah? Last Week s Answers: 1. King David ruled for 33 years in Jerusalem (2-Samuel 5:5). 3. In which law is a female double that of a male? The ritual impurity of childbirth lasts seven days for a male child and 14 days for a female child (Leviticus 12:2,5). In addition, the subsequent days of purity are 33 days for a baby boy and 66 days for a baby girl (Leviticus 12:4,5).

An inspiring story for your Shabbat table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the A PROUDER, SAFER ISRAEL MR. Erev Shabbat Parshat Acharei - Kedoshim, April 27, 2018 Iwas born to a traditional Jewish family in England, where I grew up. I studied law at University College in London and then at Hebrew University in Jerusalem. Since 1969, I have lived in Israel where I spent many years as a military prosecutor in the Gaza Strip and the Sinai, as well as serving as a legal advisor to the IDF on issues of international law and human rights law, following which I moved over to the Foreign Ministry as a legal advisor. During my time with the Foreign Ministry, I was sent to New York, where I worked for four years as a senior legal officer to Israel s UN Mission. During that time Benjamin (Bibi) Netanyahu was ambassador to the United Nations, and I used to accompany him whenever he would visit Jewish religious venues and, in one instance, to visit the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Part of the real reason why Bibi wanted to meet the Rebbe was the strong connection that all Israeli ambassadors and foreign ministers and prime ministers had with him. At the time, Yitzchak Shamir was prime minister, and he had appointed Bibi as ambassador to the United Nations. Shamir had been in contact with the Rebbe, and I assume that he recommended that Bibi pay him a visit. When we came, it was Simchat Torah during the Hakafot ceremony. We were brought straight up to Rebbe, and he talked with Bibi and myself for about forty minutes, which I found extraordinary. During the entire exchange and this also impressed me immensely the Rebbe spoke to us in perfect Hebrew. That is, not in biblical Hebrew but in regular modern Hebrew, in which he was obviously very fluent. The discussion concerned Middle East security. At that time, Shamir was involved in negotiations to withdraw Israeli forces from Lebanon, and the question of whether Israel would withdraw or not was still open. Ultimately, Israel did withdraw, but the Rebbe was very insistent that Israel shouldn t do it at that moment in time. (At the outset of the war, the Rebbe had urged Israel to eliminate the terrorists quickly and forcefully and then to pull out of Lebanon, but in late 1984, when this meeting took place, pulling out was a retreat of sorts.) You went into Lebanon in self-defense, because there was terrorism emanating from Lebanese territory, he said. As well, you re in a state of hostility with Syria. If need be, you should continue going forward even into Syrian territory. It s Israel s right to protect itself. Several times, he repeated, Yad chazakah uvizroah netuyah With a strong hand and an outstretched arm Meaning, that we should stand strong. This was the message we were meant to bring to Shamir, and he stressed this repeatedly. The Rebbe also seemed very keen to advise Bibi that, as UN ambassador, he should maintain an assertive position with respect to Israel s rights in the international community. The UN was then and certainly still is an organization that s not friendly to Israel. It constantly adopts resolutions that are hostile to Israel, and Israel is often singled out for condemnation. So nothing has changed over the years. The UN s hostile attitude posed great challenges for Bibi, continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. The story is one of thousands recorded in over 1,400 videotaped interviews conducted to date. While we have done our utmost to authenticate these stories, they reflect the listener s recollection and interpretation of the Rebbe s words. 8 continued from reverse and the Rebbe was very concerned that he should be a strong ambassador, one who is not afraid to express Israel s position without feeling the need to be overly diplomatic. When we finished our discussion, the Rebbe invited us to come and dance with the Torah, and so we went down to the main floor, and we danced, as the Rebbe looked on. It was altogether a very special occasion. Unfortunately, Prime Minister Shamir didn t follow the Rebbe s advice, and withdrew from Lebanon. It was difficult for the Israeli government to do something without coordinating with other countries and without incurring the wrath of other governments, which limited Israel s ability to act in the way the Rebbe recommended. Now, I had no doubt that the Rebbe was fully conversant with everything that was happening in the world. He knew politics, and he knew what was happening, so his recommendation was an educated one. Knowing the limitations placed upon Israel by the other countries, he was nevertheless very, very insistent that Israel shouldn t withdraw. Word of this meeting got around and, to my amazement, wherever I went in New York, people would stop me and say, Tell us about your talk with the Rebbe. For years after that, whenever I came to Crown Heights, I was always asked to talk about the Rebbe. In fact, even now, the Chabad rabbi in my own synagogue where I live near Jerusalem, still asks me about it. What I tell him is that the Rebbe was probably right. Twenty-five years later, we still don t have peace, and we are still in a constant cycle of hostilities and threats and violence. I can only imagine that, had Israel taken the advice of the Rebbe, maybe things would have been different. Maybe we would have been in a different tactical or strategic situation which would also have enabled us to be in a better negotiating position. Of course, it s impossible to know. I can only surmise that the Rebbe had thought out what the implications would be for Israel s moving into Lebanon, or moving further north into Syria, and what might have happened after that. This is something which we ll obviously never know how the situation would be different in Syria today, had Israel acted then in accordance with the Rebbe s advice. In closing, I would just like to say that I have been involved in many negotiations with many foreign ministers and prime ministers whether with Bibi Netanyahu, Ariel Sharon, David Levy, Shlomo Ben-Ami, Tzipi Livni, or Silvan Shalom as their legal advisor on questions of international law. But my experience with the Rebbe was unique, and it stands out in my memory. And I think Bibi feels the same in fact, he said to me that this is one event that he remembers well. After that meeting, I had more confidence in my job at the UN not to be overly apologetic; to be more assertive. The Rebbe got it across to me that we have no reason to apologize. And, in later years, when I was the Israeli ambassador to Canada and frequently spoke in public, I always said, We don t have to apologize for what we re doing. We too have rights.
