4 ALIYAH SUMMARY General Overview: This week's reading, Bamidbar, begins the Book of Numbers, the fourth of the Five Books of Moses. This book of the Torah opens on the first of Iyar, one month after the inauguration of the Tabernacle, and several weeks before the Jews will depart from Mount Sinai and begin their journey to the Holy Land. In this week's portion the Israelites and the Tribe of Levi are counted separately. G-d instructs the Israelites on how to camp in the desert, surrounding the Tabernacle. The Levites are informed the procedure for dismantling the Tabernacle before traveling. First Aliyah: G-d commands Moses to count all Jewish men of military age. G-d names one member of each tribe as the nasi, leader, of the tribe. Each nasi will assist Moses and Aaron in taking a census of his tribe. An additional objective of this census was to establish the tribal lineage of every Jew. This honor originally belonged to the Israelite firstborns, who were "acquired" by G-d when He spared them during the Plague of the Firstborn. This privilege was taken away from them when they participated in the sin of the Golden Calf -- and given to the Levites. Fifth Aliyah: Moses is now commanded to separately count all Levite males from the age of one month and older. The three Levite families are counted, and a leader is appointed for each of the families. The total of all (nonfirstborn) Levites eligible for this census: 22,000. The family of Gershon camped due west of the Tabernacle, and was put in charge of transporting the tapestries and curtains of the Tabernacle and their accessories. The Kehot family camped directly south of the Tabernacle, and was in charge of transporting all the holy vessels. The Merari family camped to the north of the Tabernacle, and they were in charge of carrying the Tabernacle beams, panels, and sockets. Moses, Aaron, and their immediate families camped to the east of the Tabernacle. Sixth Aliyah: G-d then tells Moses to count all the firstborn Israelites -- because the holiness of each Israelite firstborn was now to be "transferred" to a Levite. The census revealed that there were 273 more firstborn than Levites. Each of these "extra" firstborns (as determined by a lottery) gave five shekel to the priests, and was thus "redeemed." Seventh Aliyah: Moses is commanded to take a census of the Levites of the family of Kehot, but only those eligible to transport the Tabernacle and its vessels -- those between the ages of thirty and fifty. The results of this census are given in next week's reading. This section then describes the duties of the Kehot family. When the Tabernacle was to be dismantled, the priests would cover all the holy vessels with specially designated sacks. The Kehot family would then take the covered vessels and carry them to their destination. Over 500 families were able to procure an enhanced variety of dairy products at The Family Store in preparation of Shavuos. Dozens of young adults volunteered overtime to assist. Teens are invited to volunteer on Sunday 12:00-12:30 (contact Ita or Rabbi Levi) Young adults at 12:30-2:00 (contact Rabbi Getzy) Second Aliyah: And now the census results. After giving us the numbers for each tribe, the Torah gives us the grand total: 603,550. This number, however, does not include the Levites. Moses was commanded by G-d not to include the holy tribe in the general census. Instead, the Levites are assigned the following holy tasks: dismantling, carrying, and re-erecting the Tabernacle whenever the Jews traveled, and camping around the Sanctuary, keeping guard over it and its vessels. Third Aliyah: The Jews are instructed regarding their camping formation. The Tabernacle was at the center of the encampment, surrounded by the "Flag of Judah" - which included the Tribes of Judah, Issachar and Zebulun - to the east; the "Flag of Reuben"- Reuben, Shimon, Gad -- to the south; the "Flag of Ephraim" -- Ephraim, Manasseh, Benjamin -- to the west; and the "Flag of Dan" -- Dan, Asher, Naftali -- to the north. Fourth Aliyah: The Levites are appointed to serve in the Tabernacle, guard its vessels and assist the priests with their Tabernacle duties. 6 PARSHA INSIGHTS TORAH IN VERSE From the book Daily Wisdom Moshe Wisnefsky GUARDING OUR INNER SANCTUARY G-d then instructed Moses to organize the Jewish people into a specific army formation. The Tabernacle was in the middle, surrounded by three tribes on each of its four sides. (For this purpose, the descendants of the two sons of Joseph Manasseh and Ephraim were counted as separate tribes; thus, there were 12 non-levite tribes.) מ נּ ג ד ס ב יב ל א ה ל מוֹע ד י ח נוּ: (במדבר ב:ב) [G-d told Moses, The Israelites] must camp around the Tent of Meeting [i.e., the Tabernacle]. When you lend money... Numbers 2:2 The people s encampment on all four sides of the Tabernacle symbolized how they protected the holy edifice and the Torah that resided in its innermost sanctum. Certainly, the Torah does not need our protection on the contrary, the Torah and its commandments protect us. However, G-d chose to entrust us with the noble mission of protecting the Torah. Similarly, we must guard our personal, inner sanctuary within our hearts and within our homes from all four sides: from cool spiritual indifference on the cold north; from hot, lustful passions on the warm south; from self-gratification over brilliant accomplishments on the morning east; and from dark despair on the evening west. 6 MOSAIC EXPRESS SPIRITUAL ASPIRATIONS G-d then instructed Moses to count the Levites. The Levites were exempt from military service because they were conscripted to serve in the Tabernacle. They guarded the Tabernacle, dismantled it whenever the Jewish people broke camp, reconstructed it whenever they camped, and assisted the priests in the Tabernacle rituals. ה ק ר ב א ת מ טּ ה ל ו י ו ה ע מ ד תּ א תוֹ ל פ נ י א ה ר ן ה כּ ה ן ו שׁ ר תוּ א תוֹ: (במדבר ג:ו) [G-d told Moses,] Bring forth the tribe of Levi and present them before Aaron the priest, that they may serve him. Numbers 3:6 The Levites were singled out from among the rest of the Jewish people to act as G- d s personal servants. Nevertheless, the medieval Jewish sage Rabbi Moses Maimonides points out that anyone who wishes to dedicate himself to the service of G-d can do so. He or she thereby becomes a spiritual Levite and even a spiritual priest, or even a spiritual high priest! regardless of his actual tribal lineage. DOSE OF INSPIRATION BEGIN WITH ALEF by Tzvi Freeman At Sinai, He said, Let us bond together. Let us embrace in these mitzvahs, commune in this Torah, and in them we will be one. But He is an infinite, unknowable G d. If we cannot know Him, how can we bond with Him? By Justice Michel M. J. Shore The time to be counted had finally come, In the second year, the second month, of our freedom run. After The exodus, a need to count precious, our sum, Who were we and what had we become? The vestiges of Mitzrayim left, each day, more and more In the annals of the wind swept sands, As we marched further and further, as a Corps From our former selves, to merit emblems for our tribal bands. The distinct contribution to be made by each tribe Is written by Moses, G-d s Torah scribe. The priests, the Levites, were not to be counted at all, Not tempted by the golden calf, they had had no fall. Israel formed an encampment compass Around the Levites and their Mishkan service. And so, when He came to us in His Torah at Mount Sinai, He began with an alef. And when we begin to learn, we begin with an alef. In that first, infinitesimal point of not knowing, in that is contained all wisdom.

7 An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the A SOLDIER S WIFE MRS. Erev Shabbos Parshas Bamidbar, May 26, 2017 In 1973, just before the outbreak of the Yom Kippur War, I had traveled from Israel (where I was living) to New York to attend my brother s wedding, and while there, I came to see the Rebbe. Before the audience was to take place, Rabbi Leibel Groner, the Rebbe s secretary, instructed me to write down my requests on a piece of paper which would be handed into the Rebbe in advance. I did as he instructed I wrote that I was married with children, that I was teaching in the Chabad school in Lod, and that my children were in daycare which was costing more than the money I was making. I wanted the Rebbe s advice should I leave my job and stay home with my kids, instead of borrowing every month to make ends meet? When I walked into the Rebbe s office, he had a big pile of letters on his desk and he reached into it to extract my letter he pulled it out just like that without even looking for it. He read it quickly and then answered my question with this statement: I see you are teaching the children of Israel at the school Reshet Oholei Yosef Yitzchak, which is named after my holy father-in law, he began. You should know that the education of Jewish children is a conduit for blessing both material and spiritual for you and your family for generations to come. Then he repeated those words again, and the audience was over. It was only after I left that the Rebbe s words started sinking in. I thought: The Rebbe is telling me that my job educating children is a conduit for blessings. So clearly, there is only one thing I can do keep working. I called my husband, Meir, and after I told him what the Rebbe said, he concurred with my decision. Before I could return to Israel, however, the Yom Kippur War broke out and the news we were hearing was not good. My husband was drafted into a combat unit on a moment s notice and, because I was still in New York, he distributed our children amongst our neighbors and relatives. I was informed that he was sent to the front lines at Ismailia, Egypt but that s all I knew. I immediately asked Rabbi Groner for another audience with the Rebbe, but he could not schedule it as I had just been to see the Rebbe a few days before. However, after I broke down in tears, he suggested that I wait outside the office and ask for a blessing for my husband when the Rebbe came out. My heart was pounding, but I mustered the courage to approach the Rebbe as he passed by and make my plea. The Rebbe responded, When you return to the Holy Land, you will find that all your loved ones are healthy and whole. Be sure to keep in touch with me and let me know the good news. You can call me collect. He said this three times once in English, once in Yiddish and once in Hebrew and I knew his words would come true. I was trembling with excitement because I was sure it continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. Schneerson, of righteous memory. 8 continued from reverse was going to happen exactly as he said. And indeed it did. I had a hard time getting a plane ticket back to Israel because all the flights were commandeered for returning soldiers, doctors and other essential personnel. But I begged the airline telling them that my husband was in combat and I had no idea where my children were and so they let me on the plane, even though I would have to sit on the floor. Once I was on the plane, a soldier gave up his seat for me, and I told all the other passengers what the Rebbe had said. I believe they were greatly encouraged by his words. Even people who were not religious. All the men present put on their yarmulkes those who didn t have them covered their heads with napkins and the plane turned into one praying synagogue. It was very amazing and moving to see this. At some point during our flight, the plane started zigzagging in the sky because we had encountered a dogfight between our planes and Egyptian planes. I was so scared that I burst out crying when this was happening, but one of the soldiers said to me, Why are you crying? Your Rebbe told you that everything would turn out all right for you and your loved ones. And that reminder calmed me down. When we landed, the airport was absolutely dark, and there was no public transportation of any kind everything had been turned over to the war effort. But I managed to make my way home, and I located my children. The war lasted close to three weeks. When the dust settled, though many Israeli soldiers had been killed and wounded, my husband came home safe and sound just as the Rebbe said he would. As the Rebbe had requested, I made sure to call New York to report that all was well with my family. After the war, I returned to work, and I kept on working. I have now been a teacher in the Reshet Oholei Yosef Yitzchak for thirty-five years. I never wanted to block the conduit that was bringing blessings to me and my family. Yes, there were financial difficulties at the beginning, but after a time, my salary increased and I no longer needed to borrow money to send my children to daycare. I saw the blessings increase from year to year. I saw my children growing up, being educated, becoming successful in marriage, in raising their own children. I saw the Rebbe s blessing in action from generation to generation. And today I would say to anyone involved in Jewish education: It s a huge thing that you are doing; it s the most important thing in the world. Our children are our most valuable treasure, and they are in your hands. For this reason, I never retired. People say to me, What? At your age, you are still working? How do you have the energy for this? And I answer, I do it for the blessing and for the happiness it brings me. Today, I live in Upper Nazareth (Nazareth Illit) where I am the principal of a girls high school. The girls are bussed in from the entire region, and they are so pleased to come, so pleased with the school the good education, the good teachers, the good atmosphere. Our school even won a regional prize for excellence. And I really see the Rebbe s blessings all around me, still flowing after more than forty years.

12 MOSAIC EXPRESS
