G d hides, we seek. But where can G d hide? Wherever you go, there He is. As the Zohar says, There is no place void of Him. So perhaps what the Baal Shem Tov meant is more like peek-a-boo in which a parent hides behind his or her own fingers. So too, G d hides Himself within the guise of an awesome, indifferent king, judging His subjects strictly by the book until the most sublime angels shiver in dread. And we seek. We seek the father behind the stern voice. We are the small child who climbs into the king s arms, tears off the mask and exclaims, Daddy! Which is just what He was waiting for. MOSAIC EXPRESS 3

General Overview: This week's reading, Vayelech, recounts the events of the final day of Moses' terrestrial life. Moses transferred leadership to Joshua and wrote a Torah scroll which he handed over to the Levites. Moses commanded the Israelites to gather following every Sabbatical year, and informed them of the suffering which will be their lot when they will abandon the laws of the Torah. First Aliyah: Moses addressed the people, saying that he is 120 years of age on that day, and he is not permitted to cross the Jordan River together with them. Instead, Joshua will lead them, and G d will go before them and destroy their enemies. Second Aliyah: Moses continued his talk: G d will vanquish the inhabitants of Canaan as He did the Emorites and Bashanites. Moses enjoined the Israelites to be strong and not fear their enemies. Third Aliyah: Moses summoned Joshua and told him to be strong and courageous, for G d will be going before him and will not forsake him. Moses then wrote the entire Torah and gave it to the Kohnaim (priests) and the Israelite elders. Fourth Aliyah: Moses gives the commandment of Hakhel (assembly), whereby every seven years, during the holiday of Sukkot which follows the Sabbatical year, all men, women, and children assemble and the king publicly reads sections of the Torah. Fifth Aliyah: G d commanded Moses to enter the Tabernacle together with Joshua. G d appeared to them both and informed them that a time will come when the Israelites will abandon G d and stray after alien gods. At that time, G d will hide His countenance from the nation, and they will be subjected to much evils and troubles. Therefore, G d says, "Write for yourselves this song, and teach it to the Children of Israel. Place it into their mouths, in order that this song will be for Me as a witness..." This 'song' is narrated in next week's Torah reading. Sixth Aliyah: When G d's wrath will find the Israelites as a consequence of their evil actions, they will claim that the misfortunes are befalling them because G d has abandoned them. At that time, the song which Moses and Joshua wrote will bear testimony that these events are in fact punishment for their sinful behavior. Seventh Aliyah: Moses took the freshly concluded Torah scroll and gave it to the Levites. He instructed them to place it beside the Ark which contained the Tablets. Moses then gathered the entire nation to hear the song, wherein he would call upon the heavens and earth to be witnesses that the Israelites were forewarned regarding their fate. AND FINALLY... An elderly Floridian called 911 on her cell phone to report that her car has been broken into. She is hysterical as she explains her situation to the dispatcher: 'They've stolen the stereo, the steering wheel, the brake pedal and even the accelerator!' she cried. The dispatcher said, 'Stay calm. An officer is on the way.' A few minutes later, the officer radios in. 'Disregard,' he says. 'She got in the back-seat by mistake.' 5 HIGH HOLIDAYS IN DNEPROPETROVSK Excerpted from the Memoirs of Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson, mother of the Rebbe, whose Yartzeit is commemorated on Tishrei 6, this year October 8 he following episodes happened in 1935 T as well, if I remember correctly. There were only two small synagogues left in Dnepropetrovsk, one at the edge of town and the other at the center. The latter had not been confiscated by the government because its founders and congregants were workingclass craftsmen. My husband, the Rav, attended this shul. The gabbai was a tailor, the treasurer was a shoemaker, and most of the congregants practiced similar trades. These officials presided over their small kingdom, which was then well within their capability. When Schneerson began attending the shul, he attracted new congregants from a more diverse background, and the administration soon found it too difficult to continue managing the shul. They had to remain at their posts, however, to ensure that the shul retain its strictly proletarian character. They declared their great deference and absolute respect for the Rav. He had not been well-known to them until then, but when they got to know him, they agreed that he seemed to be a very fine Jew who apparently wasn t close with the bourgeoisie, and therefore could be fully trusted. CANTORS FOR THE HIGH HOLIDAYS Virtually no practicing chazzanim [cantors] were left in the Soviet Union by then. Yet some Jews with a flair for Jewish music were familiar with the traditional nusach tunes of the holiday prayer services and served as chazzanim during the month of Tishrei. As employees of the government, they were entitled to one month s vacation a year. Accordingly, they scheduled their vacation for the month of Tishrei. They generally wouldn t remain in their home towns but travelled to other cities seeking an appointment to lead the holiday prayers in a shul. Expressed in these chazzanim s prayers was their full year of pent-up, deep-seated feelings. Two such chazzanim came from Moscow to Yekatrinoslav for the High Holidays and Sukkot. My writing abilities are far insufficient to describe our shul s inspiring atmosphere and the outpouring of the soul expressed there on those holy days under the influence of the Rav and these two chazzanim. EARLY MORNING MINYAN, AND BACK FOR NE ILAH Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur fell on weekdays when the congregants were required to report for work. My husband arranged an early first minyan which completed its services by 8:00 a.m., after which its participants went straight to work. On Yom Kippur, however, they didn t go home after work but returned to shul in time for Ne ilah. For this service the shul was overcrowded, with many forced to stand outside. Everyone was exhausted from the fast and from having walked long distances. The physical strain was in addition to the spiritual agony from their awareness of the exalted day on which they had had to work, besides the heartbreakingly emotional prayers of the chazzanim all this was indescribable. The congregants expressed heartfelt thanks to my husband for making it possible for them to participate in congregational prayers on the High Holidays, despite the early hour. Copious tears poured down my husband s face as they spoke to him about this. Deriving intense satisfaction from their spiritual inspiration, he would comment with joy, Oh, how special Jews are! We were afraid to discuss such subjects very much. But my husband was pleased to have accomplished all this. BREAKING THE FAST When my husband would return home after Yom Kippur, he couldn t easily settle back into the everyday mundane existence. After coming home quite late in the evening, he drank only a glass of tea. Then he remained sitting, still garbed in his kittel and the gartel of his great-great-grandfather, the Tzemach Tzedek, to lead a farbrengen until two or three o clock in the morning. This was his regular custom on the evening after Yom Kippur, both when Jewish life had been less constricted and later when Judaism could be practiced almost solely within the confines of one s own home. Some of our friends were aware of my husband s custom, and they would eat a quick evening meal with their families before coming to our home. My husband would deliver a Chasidic discourse on subjects connected with the Yom Kippur prayers. In later years he spoke about the great qualities of Jews, their self-sacrifice to observe Judaism, and how they expressed their love towards other Jews in that difficult era. Ten or fifteen people always attended this farbrengen, which included dancing as enthusiastic as on Simchat Torah. MOSAIC EXPRESS 5

PARSHA INSIGHTS From the book Daily Wisdom Moshe Wisnefsky How to Seek Inspiration in the Torah Moses then summoned Joshua and appointed him as his successor in the presence of the entire Jewish people. א תּ ה תּ בוֹא א ת ה ע ם ה זּ ה א ל ה א ר ץ א שׁ ר נ שׁ בּ ע ה' ל א ב ת ם וגו': (דברים לא:ז) Moses summoned Joshua and said to him... You must come with this people into the land that G d swore to their forefathers. Deuteronomy 31:7 G d s Torah and His commandments are eternal and unchanging, but the way they must be made relevant and applied in each generation changes as time progresses. In order to ensure that we live life in accordance with G d s wishes, G d Himself has authorized the rabbinic leaders of each generation to apply the Torah s teachings to the unique circumstances of their generation. Therefore, when today s rabbinic authorities apply the Torah s teachings in innovative ways, we cannot try to live in the past, complaining that the leadership of previous generations did not see the need for such innovations. On the contrary: only by reading the Torah through the eyes of our Joshua today s Moses can we be certain that the Torah will provide us with the inspiration to fulfill our Divine mission and live our lives to the fullest. Being a Jewish King Moses then conveyed G d s command to the Jewish people that they assemble once every seven years, during the festival of Sukot, in order to hear their king read specific passages from the Torah. Although they were commanded to study the Torah in any case, this ceremony was designed to instill renewed commitment to G d s covenant with them. תּ ק ר א א ת ה תּוֹר ה ה זּ את נ ג ד כּ ל י שׂ ר א ל בּ א ז נ יה ם: (דברים לא:יא) [Moses told Joshua, at the Sukot assembly, as their future king, ] You must read this Torah before all Israel. Deuteronomy 31:11 The objective of this assembly was to strengthen the foundations of Jewish education and observance. We can thus fulfill this commandment nowadays firstly by assembling all the various facets of our personalities in order to imbue them with the knowledge and reverence of G d. Next, we should assemble our families periodically and strengthen each other in a spirit of family love and camaraderie. Finally, we should assemble whatever groups of people we can whether at work, at school, in our synagogues, our extended families, our wider circle of friends, etc. in order to influence as many people as possible to enhance their commitment to the Torah s values and lifestyle, as based on the love and awe of G d. Fulfilling this commandment to the greatest extent possible will elicit G d s reciprocal response, and He will enable us to finally fulfill it in its optimal fashion, in the rebuilt holy Temple, as we listen to the Torah read to us by the ultimate Jewish king, the Messiah. 7 An inspiring story for your Shabbos table HERE S my STORY Generously sponsored by the THE UNFORGOTTEN JEW RABBI MENDEL NEMES Erev Shabbos Parshas Vayelech, October 7, 2016 Icome from a Chabad family with roots in Russia and Germany, though by the time I was born in 1958, my parents were living in Crown Heights. When my mother was pregnant with me, she and my father, Yitchak Nemes, came to see the Rebbe to ask for a blessing. At the time, it was the custom among some married religious women to wear a partial wig covered with a kerchief, but the Rebbe had been campaigning that they should fully cover their hair with a sheitel (wig). When the Rebbe saw my mother he said to her, A half a sheitel is a half a blessing, a whole sheitel is a whole blessing. After giving his blessing, the Rebbe asked to see my father privately and when my mother had left the room, he opened a drawer and took out a sum of money. It was a pretty large sum for those days. He then instructed my father to go to Manhattan and find out where the Broadway actors buy their wigs and buy my mother the nicest sheitel he could find. That is just one instance of the Rebbe s sensitivity and caring that my family experienced. My father was in the business of buying and selling postal stamps. As a result he travelled a lot, especially to Central and South America, buying stamps there and selling them to collectors in Europe. And, as if the Rebbe didn t have enough on his mind, he instructed his secretariat to save the foreign stamps from his incoming mail for my father. I recall my father peeling off these stamps from the envelopes and arranging them in special collectors albums. On one occasion in 1972, while my father was preparing to travel to a number of foreign cities including Managua, Nicaragua he wrote out his whole three-week itinerary for the Rebbe, asking for a blessing for a safe trip. The Rebbe gave the blessing, but also told my father not to rush. Meaning the Rebbe was blessing him to go, but not just yet. So my father postponed his trip. Shortly thereafter there was a massive earthquake in Managua with 6,000 people killed and 20,000 injured. Some of the people that my father was to meet did not survive. The destruction and loss of life was terrible, but my father was spared. Six months later my father decided to try again, and he asked the Rebbe if he should go now. This time the Rebbe instructed him, Check and see what the US State Department advises. My father called the State Department, and they said, The situation following the earthquake is very bad. We don t recommend that American citizens travel there. So he waited. Another three months passed, and again he asked the Rebbe, who told him that this time it was okay continued on reverse An oral history project dedicated to documenting the life of the Rebbe, Rabbi Menachem M. 8 continued from reverse to go, provided he made sure to be inoculated against malaria and other tropical diseases. When my father landed in Managua, he couldn t believe the disaster before his eyes. About a quarter-of-a-million people were homeless; hardly anything was standing. When he asked the taxi to take him to the main post office, the driver laughed, Are you crazy? That whole block is destroyed. My father insisted and, as it turned out, the main post office was still standing. My father went to see the postmaster general, who was amazed that he had come to Nicaragua. My father told him the whole story how the Rebbe saved his life. In response, the postmaster general said, You can have all the stamps you want for free. And, my father made a very nice profit as a result. On another occasion, my father was traveling to Guyana, a very primitive place where in 1978 the murder-suicide of the Jones cult took place. Before he left, the Rebbe gave him a dollar and told him to find a Jew in Guyana and give it to him. When my father arrived in the capital, Georgetown, he was told that there were no Jews living there. But as he had his instructions from the Rebbe, he could not just give up. The Rebbe gave me a dollar for a Jew, he said, so I will find a Jew. He started searching through the phone book and saw one Jewish-sounding name. So he went to that address and knocked on the door. A man answered and my father asked him if he was Jewish. The man said he was, and invited my father inside. Once my father went in and saw the place filled with graven images, he realized he couldn t stay there. So he asked the man to come to his hotel and spend Shabbat with him. The man did, and the experience proved life-transforming for him. And when he heard about the Lubavitcher Rebbe, he requested that my father bring him the Rebbe s picture on his return trip. My father did. And when he next visited the man s house, all the graven images were gone and only the Rebbe s picture was hanging up in the dining room. Following this my father stayed in contact You can help us record more testimonies by dedicating future editions of Here s My Story with him and, upon his request, arranged that he receive a kosher burial after his passing. That s what happened when the Rebbe made my father his messenger for delivering just one dollar such a seemingly small and insignificant mitzvah, with such huge impact.
