HALACHA OF THE WEEK BY: RABBI MORDECHAI TORCZYNER Dismantling a Succah (Succos 5774) I am leaving town for the last days of Succos; may I dismantle my succah during chol hamoed? There are three concerns involved in dismantling a succah on chol hamoed: Performing labour during chol hamoed for a non-yom Tov purpose; Degrading the sanctity of the succah materials; The possibility that one might need the succah again. Because of these concerns, we do not dismantle a succah on chol hamoed. However, one may dismantle a succah if its materials are needed for another succah at one's destination. Also, one may remove succah decorations if he is concerned that they might be damaged before his return. What if one needs to build a succah during chol hamoed for temporary use, e.g. camping? One should declare before building the succah that he intends to dismantle it during chol hamoed. However, even in such a case one may dismantle it only in an amateur way, lest he violate the prohibition against performing labour during chol hamoed, and one may dismantle only after it is clear that he will not need it again. Membership has its privileges; one of the most important is getting to know our new members, and helping them become engaged. There are three things that we can do as individuals that can make a huge difference. 1. Look around you when you come to Shul. If you don t know someone, introduce yourself. They may be a long-time member who attends infrequently, someone considering membership, or they may be one of our proud new members. A little friendliness goes a long way! 2. Invite a new member to a Shul event. It could be adult education, or a seudah; the invitation will expose them to more of the opportunities within the BAYT. It gives you a chance to be a great host, by introducing your guest to other attendees. 3. Invite someone new to a Shabbos meal. We all tend to invite those we know for a meal, but inviting a new member (or a member you don t know very well) can inject something new into your social mix. More importantly, that one small step starts a chain reaction of invitations, connection, and community. This is what makes the BAYT warm and friendly. They may be stored in the utility room behind the lower floor elevator or outside by the bike rack to the right of the parking door entrance. For fire and safety purposes, this ruling will be strictly enforced. Any strollers and carriages found inside the building will be removed to the designated storage space. IMPORTANT NOTE TO PARENTS Parents are reminded that they are responsible for their children while on Shul property. Every child must be in a minyan, with a parent or in a supervised youth program. This is essential for the safety of our children and the protection of the Shul property. The Shul will demand reimbursement from any parent whose child is found damaging Shul property.

8 ZERO TOLERANCE The BAYT has a zero tolerance policy toward consumption of alcoholic beverage by under age persons. Any person under the age of 19 who has or appears to have been drinking will be denied access to the BAYT. Any person under the age of 19 years who is found bringing alcoholic beverages into the Shul will have to surrender these beverages to Security and will be escorted out of the Shul. No person over the age of 19 may provide alcoholic beverage to under age persons on Shul property. If that person is a BAYT member the issue will be dealt with by the BAYT Executive Committee. Violations of these policies by children of members will result in immediate notification to the member-parent. The security guards have been instructed to enforce the zerotolerance policy as and if needed.
