The three paragraphs of Shema, plus the added Baruch shem sentence, contain 245 words. Traditionally, we try to add three words to Shema to draw a parallel between our declaration of spiritual faith and the human physique, which we are taught is composed of at least 248 parts ( eivarim ). When reciting Shema in a minyan, one hears the chazan's repetition of Hashem Elokeichem emet, and this completes the 248. One who is still reciting Shema at that time should pause in order to hear those three words from the chazan. How can an individual reciting Shema alone reach 248 words? The prevalent approach is to recite Kel melech ne eman before Shema. Others consider Kel melech ne eman an inappropriate interruption between Shema and its preceding berachah, and so they repeat Hashem Elokeichem emet at the end. A third option, for Shacharit, is not to say anything extra, but to count the 15 vavs which begin the words following Shema as the equivalent of three added words. Additional options exist for maariv. There is significant debate regarding reciting Kel melech ne eman before reciting Shema on one's bed at night; one should follow her custom. RENOVATION UPDATES The Jarvis Freedman Library is closed indefinitely and off limits at all times. The Brotherhood office is being converted into a Facilities office and is permanently off limits. The whole Sisterhood Lobby, adjacent washrooms, cloakroom and stairwell will be under construction commencing Monday, January 7 th. That area will be completely off limits including Shabbos. From January 7 th, please use cloakrooms on floors 2 & 3. Lockers: With work commencing in the Sisterhood Lobby area, the lockers have been moved to the West Wing Hallway. Please remember to continue using the locker number you have been pre-assigned in whatever location the lockers may be. Directed by Ric Esther Bienstock, the movie is based on the life of Major Karl Plagge, a member of the Nazi Party, who during World War 2 established a forced labour camp outside of the Vilna Ghetto. In the camp known as HKP 562, Plagge sought to save as many Jews as he could utilizing work permits issued on the false premise that the holders' skills were vital to the German war effort. Thanks to Major Plagge s warnings about the final round ups, 200 Jews were saved, the largest group of survivors from the Vilna Ghetto. In 1999, Dr. Michael Good, accompanied his mother Pearl, one of the survivors of Camp HKP 562, to Vilnius and Dr. Good wrote a book entitled "The Search for Major Plagge: The Nazi Who Saved Jews". Through the efforts of the Goods and that of others, Yad Vashem recognized Plagge posthumously on April 2005 as a Righteous amongst the Nations. Working with the archeologists who initially investigated the sight in 2017, Simcha and Ric Esther Bienstosk have produced a film that had its world premiere in Vilnius in July 2018 and was described as powerful in its sensitivity as it links the testimonies of the survivors with the story of Major Plagge himself. We are proud to host the North American premiere of this unique film, of an unknown but important story of someone who took enormous risks to save over 200 Jews from certain death as the SS liquidated the Vilna Ghetto.

The reality is that for any number of reasons it takes real effort and intention to reach out to people whom we don t know, are new to our community, or appear different than us. STEP FOUR - WIDEN YOUR CIRLCE Greet everyone you pass or everyone who comes within a few feet of you. A simple hello or Shabbat Shalom will do the trick. STEP FIVE - GREET THOUGHTFULLY Not sure if someone is new to the community or just new to you? Begin your introduction with, I m not sure if we ve met before, or ask, Have we met before? When you re introduced to someone, try, Nice to see you rather than nice to meet you, just in case you ve actually met before. SOMEONE IN HOSPITAL? Often, we are unaware of members of the kehillah who are in the hospital. 7 BAYT YOUTH BNOS VOLUNTEERS BAYT Youth is looking for a few more High School age girls to help run the weekly Shabbos afternoon BNOS program. Volunteer hours will be given to all BNOS Leaders. If you can help out, please contact Rich at rich@bayt.ca READING CONTEST FOR ALL KIDS READATHON EXPLANATION For 5 weeks A.H.A.V.A., a non-profit to promote English Literacy in Israel, runs a rewarding Readathon for students in 1-8th grade. We are inviting students from Elementary and Jr. High schools to join Israeli kids who take up the challenge to read English for 5 weeks. Each registered participant is encouraged to read as many books and pages as possible. According to age, grade and English level, readers strive to reach higher reading levels. The Israelis are excitedly looking forward to the prizes awaiting them at the Awards Ceremony. Some groups of Toronto readers will get together to celebrate their achievements at the end as well. Of course anyone in Israel at the time of the Awards Ceremony is more than welcome to attend! The Israeli school whose students have read the most pages is also awarded a prize of a small library of 25 books. The improvement in English and the excitement generated about reading English, a foreign language for most of the hundreds of young Israeli participants, is the true achievement of this wonderful community project. In addition to gained reading skills, Torontonians will be excited about connecting with their Israeli counterparts on this project. Please note this blood donor clinic will be dedicated in memory of Batsheva Yeres a h. Batsheva a"h was known for her chessed and constant care for others. Batsheva a h had blood type O, the universal donor, so fitting for a person who was so giving.
