4 Sholosh Seudot You Gotta be Kiddin Me Halacha Discussion Whoever sheds human blood, his own blood shall be shed by man (Bereishis 9:6) The Gemara learns from this verse that an assailant who attempts murder must be killed first, if necessary to protect the victim (Sanhedrin 72b). This rule forms the basis of a painful question involving a pair of Siamese twins who were attached by the chest. One had an entire heart, while his twin brother who shared his blood supply had only half a heart of his own. The doctors warned that if the twins would be left in this state, they could by no means survive more than 12 months. The only option the doctors could suggest was to separate the twins, thus ensuring the life of the one with the entire heart and the certain and immediate death of the other. The tragic decision was then placed in the hands of the poskim: can one brother be killed to save the life of the other? What is the Answer? 5 Profiles This week we continueour new feature in the bulletin with another instalment of PROFILES. Each week, we profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive mannerto help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we spotlight Ezra Ridgley. TCS: Ezra, you have been a long-time member of TCS but how did you first get connected? Ezra:My first connection was going to Ottawa on an AISH bus for a rally Ottawa around the time of a terrible wave terror attacks in Israel around 15 years ago. I enjoyed my time with people on the bus and after that got phone calls offering to go to classes at AISH. When I moved into the area it was natural for me to go to the shul. TCS: Beyond being a Zionist you have a passion for Israel. Ezra:My first trip to Israel changed my perspective. I was fascinated by Jewish cultural life and wanted to know about the rise of Jewish life so I visited every place I possibly could. I then started a website to highlight the different cities in Israel. TCS: And how did you become an advocate for Judea and Samaria? Ezra:About 10 years ago on a trip and as always I had an agenda planned for every day I was in Israel. On the last night I had a dream that I was in Gaza holding a flag. When I woke up I immediately changed my plans and went to Gush Kativ. It was there that I realized that the Jews there were just like us. When Gaza was destroyed I turned my full attention to the West Bank settlements. Ezra: My attitude is if you can t bring Jew to the West Bank then bring the West Bank to the Jew. So I started filming and documenting everywhere I went. No one knew what it was like because no one had really been there. Most of the Jewish world was apathetic because they have not been there. TCS: How did the settlers react to you? Ezra: I was treated royally because no one from outside had evercome seeking their wellbeing. TCS: You credit another source for your deep connection to Judea and Samaria? Ezra: Reading the Tanach is an inspiration. Israel is the land of Tanach and visiting the lands makes the Tanach come alive for me. I can see Hashem at work in different ways when I am there. TCS: Did you encounter any problems along the way? Ezra: There were some close calls but nothing catastrophic. Now there is more sophisticated security. When I started it was more dangerous a little bit like the Wild West. TCS:How have you managed to balance the cost and time with other obligations in life? Ezra: There have certainly been costs both financial and otherwise but I have no regrets.i genuinely believe it has been the right thing to do. TCS:Any current projects? Ezra: In 2017 it will be 50 years since we returned to the land of Judea & Samaria and began to resettle it.i am organizing a celebration called the Liberation of our Nation at the BAYT in the spring. TCS: Last week you had your Bar Mitzvah. What spurred you to go through with it? Ezra:I had a desire to read the Haftorah but Rabbi Rothman insisted on making it a Bar Mitzvah. I also gave a Dvar Torah at Seudat Shlishit.

6 TCS: I trust that your voice did not begin to change through the process. Ezra: No, I got that out of the way quite a long time ago. TCS:Based on your experience would you recommend it to someone contemplating a Bar or Bat Mitzvah later in life? Ezra:Yes.The process of learning to read the Torah and Haftorah gives you a good feeling inside. Giving a Dvar Torah forces you to go into greater depth in learning which also gives you a sense of accomplishment. TCS:What was the reaction of your friends? Ezra:Everyone was supportive. Rabbi Haskel Bahar offered to help when he learned that I wanted to do this. He set up an audio file and practiced with me as the date got closer. TCS:Thoughts of making aliyah yourself? Ezra:At the right time I will be there. Everything has a time. TCS: Any hobbies? Ezra: Judea &Samaria have been very time consuming. I maintain a website that sums up all my work including 2 full documentaries, 50 short videos and updates on events in the community. I encourage everyone to check it out: TCS: We see you at seemingly every TCS event. Ezra:I am always called whenever there are any videos or audio needs. TCS:What about the coin business? Ezra: I work with a partner on commemorative Israeli coins.there are lots of anniversaries in 2017 with the land and the modern state of Israel. We also can commemorate simchasand memorialize loved ones by putting their image onsilver or gold coins or medallions. TCS: What role do you play? Ezra:I am responsible for coming up with the concepts and creating the designs. TCS: Something about you that people would never have known? Ezra: I was a very talented hockey player. If I was bigger I might have been a professional player. My Dad made it to Junior B but a lung infection took away his shot at the NHL. TCS: How did you become so talented? Phil Ezrasito: Dad built an ice rink in the back yard. I constantly was on the ice so I developed strong skating skills. After school, the girls got to figure skate but after dinner the boys played hockey. TCS: Did you ever consider figure skating where size is not an issue? Ezra: Dad was Mr. Tough guy. No way would he allow that. TCS: And so we will never know what you would look like in leotards and sequins. TCS: So Stuart is busy this week shovelling snow at shul and at home. That leaves you as president for the week so what changes might we expect to see from you? Ezra: I am very happy with the way the shul operates so no changes from me.
