May I switch to the "second days" this year? There is an annual mourning period, corresponding with part the Omer, when we do not take haircuts. Varying customs set the time period differently. For example, one prominent custom extends from after Pesach until Lag ba Omer. A second prominent custom extends from Rosh Chodesh Iyar until the 46th day of the Omer. Rav Moshe Feinstein ruled that one may switch from one custom to the other, from one year to the next. There are two caveats, though: One may not observe two contradictory customs in the same year, such as getting a haircut before Rosh Chodesh and again after Lag ba'omer. One may not veer from the communal custom; if a community has a defined practice, one may not vary from that practice. 4 ANNOUNCEMENTS & MESSAGES RABBI S MESSAGE A most bizarre exchange occurs in the Mishnah (Avoda Zara 2:5). In the middle of a technical legal debate, one rabbi turns to the other and asks: Rabbi Yehoshua said, Brother Yishmael, how do you read the verse (Canticles 1:2) Your love is better than wine is the man addressing the woman or is the woman addressing the man? Rabbi Yishmael responded, The man is addressing the woman. Not so, said R Yehoshua, whereupon he proceeded to demonstrate that the woman is addressing the man. Let s try to understand this strange exchange by first understanding the purpose of the holy work, Song of Songs, which we will read over Pesach. Shlomo HaMelech wrote two great Megillos, Koheles (Ecclesiastes) and Shir HaShirim (Canticles) that represent a dichotomy. There are two aspects to Torah, one, which is the rational Torah of reason, the Torah that helps us make sense of the world, that provides us with order and logic, a way of understanding how and why the world is the way it is, and Hashem s interaction with it. But there s a deeper aspect to Torah, one that involves mystery and transcendence above human reason. Certain things in life cannot be explained rationally, and many great thinkers have observed that this is the role of religion in general. Some of the basic presuppositions of Judaism cannot be reduced in terms of human reason. There s a certain mystery and ineffability contained within Hashem and His Torah, which transcend human reason and enter into a different part of the human being. Put another way, the Torah is both a philosophical treatise and a poem. It appeals to our faculty of reason and provides us with a sense of understanding, a nomos. But it is also a song, that allows us to appreciate the ineffable, the emotional, and the love that exists between G d and Man. This is why R Yehuda HaLevi could write both the Kuzari and beautiful poetry, because he found both the intellectual and the romantic within Judaism. In this context, Shir HaShirim represents that which transcends the intellect, which is the celebration of love that exists between G d and Israel, a love that is as intellectually elusive as the love between a man and a woman. It is fittingly read on Pesach, the holiday of experience, the holiday of miracles, the holiday of transcending the logical and rational, the time when Hashem elected the Jewish people despite our not having any merit or rational deservedness. By contrast, Koheles represents the rational, the philosophy of life, the nomos, the attempt to make sense of it all through a prism of Torah based knowledge and reason. Perhaps we read it on Sukkos because that is the time when man is tending to wax about the purpose of life, after he has just been spared for another year of life and can enjoy the bounty of his harvest. Returning to our Mishnah: There are two Torah s, the Torah Shebichtav the written Torah, that is at times poetic, cryptic and mysterious. It needs to be interpreted by the Torah Shebe al Peh in order for us to decipher it and make sense of it. The two, when coupled together, form the poetry of G d and the reason of Man, and these two together form a synthesized beautiful holistic unit. What R Yehoshua was trying to demonstrate to R Yishmael was that at times one has to acknowledge that the mystery of Torah Shebichtav is superior to the rational clarity of Torah Shebe al Peh; thus it is the woman, the Jewish people who are saying to Hashem, the man in the metaphor, that the wine of the world, the thing that enhances our vision of reality even when it takes us a bit away from our rational faculties, is Hashem s Torah Shebichtav, precisely because of its poetry and mystery. Sometimes, especially in today s world, people look with condescension at Judaism because it may appear to them as a primitive throw back to a time when people couldn t explain everything rationally, and so they had to fall back on religion as their crutch. But that is untrue. Religion in general, and the Torah specifically, must be respected for what it is, a living system that helps us process all that reason cannot explain, the ability to give expression to the ineffable, the silence between the words, and the emotional and spiritual mysteries of the universe. Karen and I wish you a chag kasher v sameach, replete with Sedarim and a Yom Tov that is filled with Hashem s loving embrace. Rabbi Daniel Korobkin MESSAGE FROM THE ASSISTANT RABBI The Mishnah in Pesachim (10:5) states: In every generation one is obligated to view himself as though he came out of Egypt, as it says: Tell your son on that day saying, "Because of this, God acted for me when I came out of Egypt" (Shemos 13:8). Therefore, we are obligated to thank, praise, glorify, exalt, bless and honor Him who performed all of these miracles for our fathers and for us. He took us from slavery to freedom, from sadness to joy, from mourning to festivity, from darkness to light, from servitude to redemption. Therefore, we shall recite before Him the Hallel. The obvious question is: How? How are we, in 5776, supposed to feel as though we experienced an event that happened over 3,000 years ago? While this Mishna can be interpreted on numerous levels, I d like to share the following possibility with you. Every year, each and every one of us experience numerous challenges in our lives. These may be medical, financial, social or something else. While there are some for which we can never seem to find a solution, Hakadosh Baruch Hu does redeem us from many of these challenges. The Rabbis are suggesting that every Pesach, each person must recognize the various Yeztiat Mitzrayims, the various challenges, from which they have been redeemed over the last year. And as a result, every Pesach, each person is obligated to thank, praise, glorify, exalt, bless and honor Him who performed all of these personal redemptions for us. May we continually be taken from slavery to freedom, from sadness to joy, from mourning to festivity, from darkness to light and from servitude to redemption. 5 ANNOUNCEMENTS & MESSAGES PESACH CORNER MAOS CHITTIN When selling your Chometz, the custom of providing donations for the purchase of Passover foods for the poor can be fulfilled by making donations to the Shul s Charity Fund. Simply go online and select Donate from the menu; indicate Charity Fund, Maos Chittin under the Donation Type. BURNING OF CHOMETZ, APRIL 22 The City of Vaughan will be providing a special bin for the burning of chometz at the BAYT. The Vaughan Fire Department will be present to supervise the ceremony. Please note the following details: The bin will be located in the far South East corner of the parking lot The bin will be available from 7:30 AM to 12 noon. Only Chometz in paper bags is accepted and permissible. All Plastics will be turned away. PESACH GARBAGE DEPOT A Pre Pesach garbage disposal service has been arranged at the Garnet A. Williams Community Centre, 501 Clark Avenue West (Northwest Corner of the parking lot). The service will be available from April 18 April 22nd, open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. On April 22nd the depot NOON. Garbage will NOT be accepted outside of these times. Every child must be in a Minyan or with a parent. This is essential for the safety of our children and the protection of Shul property. The Shul will demand reimbursement from any parent whose child is found damaging Shul property. STROLLERS & CARRIAGES We have limited space for storage of strollers and baby carriages in the utility room behind the lower floor elevator. Unfortunately, they cannot be stored in the building hallways and lobbies since they present a hazard in the event of a required evacuation. Any strollers found in the hallways will be relocated to the utility room. OBLIGATIONS PROCESS Important Information for the Membership Year! At BAYT, members only need to complete an Obligations application once every three years so long as the member s financial circumstances don t change, which can be confirmed annually by signing a confirmation form. In other words, when an Obligations application is submitted, membership dues would be set for that year and the next two years. Of course, any member who had suffered a downturn in their financial situation is free to submit a new Obligations application and ask for a lower assessment. If your last application was for , please make sure you pick up an Obligations application from the office or download one from the Shul s website. If you submitted an application for either last year or the year before, and your financial circumstances have not changed, then you can keep your dues at the same level by filling out a confirmation form. All forms (available on our website) are due no later than Friday, June 3 if you intend to participate in the seating lottery and Friday, August 19 th for everyone else. Fire regulations do not permit us to keep the facility open to the public during a power outage as we have no fire detection or suppression. On May 9th, we will be open for morning services as usual. When her 16 year old son, Naftali z l, was kidnapped and murdered along with two other teens in June 2014, Rachelle was the most public voice of the families during the search, promoting unity, prayer and faith.
