The classes will be run live via teleconference and allow the audience to interact with Rabbi Spitz in real time. 4 Sholosh Seudot You Gotta be Kiddin Me Halacha Discussion A young mother visited her parents for the afternoon, bringing along her small baby. That evening, when she returned home and tried to put the baby to bed, she discovered that the pacifier was missing. She searched throughout the house, but could not find it. They had other pacifiers but none took the place of this specific pacifier that the baby was used to. Finally she called her parents to see if she had forgotten the pacifier there. After a quick search, the grandmother informed her that indeed she had. It was then ten o clock at night and they had no way of getting the pacifier to the baby. Her husband was in the Beis Midrash learning. She could not leave her other sleeping children. Her mother could not come either. In the meantime, the baby was screaming his head off and the poor young mother was at her wit s end. Wait an minute, I ve got an idea, said the grandmother. I will call you back in a few minutes. A few minutes passed and the phone rang again. Everything is okay. The pacifier is on the way. I put it in a plastic bag and taped it onto the back of the bus. The bus should be at your house in 10 minutes. The mother ran downstairs. The bus arrived with pacifier attached. The mother ran back up, popped the pacifier in the baby s mouth and the baby instantly fell asleep. Finally peace and quiet descended on her home. When her husband returned, she thought he would be amused by the unusual story, but he seemed uncomfortable about something. What is wrong? she asked. I just wonder if we have to pay the bus company for delivering the pacifier, he said. 6 PROFILE This week we continue our new feature in the bulletin with the 51st installment of PROFILES Each week, we profile a different family in a (hopefully) fun and non-invasive manner to help us get to know our fellow shul members. This week we spotlight the Bar Mitzvah boy Yossi Paskovatyi. TCS: Mazel Tov on your Bar Mitzvah. How are the preparations going? Yossi: Pretty well. TCS: You have an unusual wealth of experience on the big stage having competed for years on the Pokémon Circuit. Do you feel that your experience of being under pressure will help you on your Bar Mitzvah day? Yossi: It is different. I sometimes get nervous competing but I don t think I will be nervous for the Bar Mitzvah. TCS: Describe your preparation for the Bar Mitzvah. Yossi: Avishai is my teacher. I am doing the whole Parsha and it is a double one. TCS: Do you have any siblings? Yossi: I have two sisters Rochelle and Bracha, and two younger brothers Rafi and David. TCS: But that is not all, right? Yossi: That is right. We have a dog named Molly whom we all love except Rochelle, and a large tank full of fish. Yossi s Aba: Correction two tanks, one with tooo many fish and one with kosher shrimps TCS: Do the fish have names? Yossi: There are too many of them to give names. TCS: Do you eat fish at home? Yossi: No because my Mother is allergic to fish. Only kosher shrimps from aba s tank, but don t tell him that. TCS: That makes things less stressful for the fish no doubt. TCS: Which school do you attend? Yossi: I am in grade 7 at Eitz Chaim. TCS: What is your favourite subject in school? Yossi:I like gym. I really like volleyball. TCS: Back to Pokémon. How did you get started? Yossi: I actually was introduced to Pokémon at AISH. My Dad got me started on my collection. TCS: Can you share with us some of your accomplishments from your storied career? Yossi: I was rated 17 th in North America and in the top 10 in Canada at one point. In the Canadian Nationals, I twice reached the top 8. I also competed twice in the World Championships. TCS: Where were the World Championships? Yossi: San Francisco and Boston. In San Fran, I got to meet some relatives for the first time. TCS: How intense are the competitions and how fierce are your competitors? Yossi: In the beginning rounds, it is not so tense but things ramp up in the later rounds. The competitors range from being quite relaxed and joking around to very tense. TCS: Have you been tempted with the heavy drinking and steroids that have plagued the Pokémon world? Yossi: No.

7 TCS: Is that a my lawyer has advised me to say no. Yossi: No, just my father. TCS: What are your longer-term plans for Pokémon? Yossi: After my bar mitzvah, I will slow down, as it is getting harder to find the time. TCS: Any other interests and does your Pokémon schedule allow for other pursuits? Yossi: I played drums and guitars at one point. I would like to play soccer in the future. TCS: I hear your siblings are also into Pokémon. How would you assess their potential? Yossi: The girls do not care for it but Rafi and David both play. Rafi is quite good but David at only age 5 is already winning matches and has some serious potential. TCS: Who is more old school and who is more new wave when it comes to parenting styles, your Mom or your Dad? Yossi: They both display a mix of new and old parenting styles but, one thing for sure they both use the Russian approach. TCS: What do you want to be when you grow up? Yossi: I don t know but I definitely will not be a history teacher. That much I do know. TCS: Black or green olives on a sandwich? Yossi: Neither, forest of giant plants please, great Pokémon to put on the sandwich, big and green as well TCS: A very wise man, mature beyond his years. TCS: Something about you that makes your Abba and Ima proud? Yossi: I m one of the best students in class, which makes my mama proud and one of the best Pokémon players in Toronto, which makes papa proud. Mom: Yes this is true one of the best and most respected students in the class which makes mama very proud. Dad: Naah, he can do better than that. We have old family tradition both your Grandfather and your father were fencing champions of entire Russia. Time for you to win some Pokémon word championship to keep up with the old family sports tradition!!! TCS: Tell us something that even friends might not know about you. Yossi: Until my bar mitzvah invitations went out I bet no one in my class knew my middle name. TCS: So Stuart our president elect is busy this week in Spring Training for the upcoming softball team. While he is away, we are making you president for the week. What changes will you make? Yossi: Make kiddush better with Caesar salad and candy.
