The original, talmudic purpose of Karpas was to have two dippings (Karpas and Marror) during the Seder, in order to inspire our children to ask questions. The word karpas itself, which might be understood to specify cress or celery, was not used in reference to the Seder dipping until the time of the Gaonim. Therefore, there is leeway in determining what to dip. The sages have narrowed down the field for appropriate Karpas by stipulating that it should be: 1. A food which warrants a berachah of borei pri ha'adamah, so that this berachah will count for the Marror as well. This is because there is debate regarding whether Marror warrants its own borei pri ha'adamah, as a bitter food, so we take care of it with Karpas. 2. Produce that would not qualify, itself, as Marror. Therefore, popular Ashkenazi customs include celery, parsley, potato and radish. Some families prefer to use banana and pineapple, as species which are more apt to catch the interest of children, and which also teach children that the berachah on these species is borei pri ha'adamah. Second Aliyah: (35:31) If Hashem instilled wisdom into Betzalel, what merit did he have to be chosen as the Mishkan s builder? Third Aliyah: (37:25-29) Why in Parshas Tetzaveh was the commandment given first to manufacture the oil and then to build the incense altar, whereas here the order is the opposite? Fourth Aliyah: (38:8) What are the mar os hatzov os (legion mirrors), and why were they used to build the laver? Fifth Aliyah: (39:21) Why is it so important to emphasize that the Kohen Gadol s breastplate (Choshen) may never loosen from above the Ephod? Sixth Aliyah: (39:42-43) If the verse already stated that Bnei Yisrael did everything according to Hashem s commands, why does the next verse have to say that Moshe saw that they got it all right? Seventh Aliyah: (40:35) If Moshe used to speak with Hashem face to face, why couldn t he enter the Mishkan when Hashem s cloud rested upon it? MINYAN LOCATION CHANGE In our ongoing efforts to conserve energy and reduce utility costs, effective Monday March 12, 2018, the Turk Family Beis Medrash will be closed Sundays through Fridays between the hours of 10 am and 5 pm. The Jarvis Freedman Library will be available throughout the week for learning and the daily 2 pm Mincha will be held in the Moshe & Mania Gruda Bais Medrash. WHEN THE RAV IS AWAY The Rav will be away this Shabbos. In the Rav s absence, please contact Rabbi Spitz INCOME TAX RECEIPT 2017 On Tuesday, February 27th members were ed a 2017 Tax Receipt for their donations to the shul. Those who do not have will receive their documentation via Canada Post as in the past. An additional tax receipt representing member donations to the Brotherhood and Sisterhood will go out shortly. 5 SHABBAT ITANU 2018 UPCOMING EVENTS We are pleased to announce the 6th Annual Shabbat set to take place on April 27-28, 2018 in partnership with Yachad, DANI, Yeshivat Nefesh Dovid, Kollel Ohr Yosef and BAYT Youth. This year, renowned teacher and inspirational speaker, Rabbi Yehoshua Hoffman, will be joining us as the scholar-in-residence. More than ever before, the success of Shabbat Itanu will rely not only upon the exceptional ruach that we create, but also upon the generosity of community members, whose sponsorship allows us to create the inclusion for our kehilla. We kindly ask you to participate as a sponsor/supporter for the event to the level that you can contribute. 6 UPCOMING EVENTS DESPERATELY SEEKING VOLUNTEERS The burning of the chometz will be taking place in our parking lot from 6:30 am until 12:18 pm on Friday, March 30 (Good Friday, statutory holiday). What is expected of the volunteers? Volunteers will be posted at tables that will be set up around the circumference of the "fire pit". Volunteers need to ensure that no plastics are placed in the fire. Volunteers check all of the bags that are being brought to be burned and if there is plastic, the plastic is thrown out. Many times people bring their offerings in plastic bags; BAYT supplies paper bags to be used. How many volunteers are required? We require 3 volunteers per shift. If you wish to do more than one shift - great!!!! Are children able to volunteer? Absolutely! Children ages 14+ are able to volunteer. If they require community service we will be more than happy to complete their forms. Am I able to work more than one time slot? Silly question Of course, the more hours you can do the better! Times slots are for one hour, commencing at 6:30 am until 12:30 pm. What do I need to do? PESACH CORNER MAOS CHITTIN When selling your Chometz, the custom of providing donations for the purchase of Passover foods for the poor can be fulfilled by making donations to the Shul s Charity Fund. Simply go online and select Donate from the menu; indicate Charity Fund, Maos Chittin under the Donation Type. SHAIMOS COLLECTION The Shul has once again made arrangements with the Va'ad HaShaimos on Sunday, March 25, 2018 from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm, in the parking lot near the clothes bins. $10 for a mid-size bag. BURNING OF CHOMETZ, MARCH 30 The City of Vaughan will be providing a special bin for the burning of chometz at the BAYT. The Vaughan Fire Department will be present to supervise the ceremony. Please note the following details: The bin will be located in the far South East corner of the parking lot The bin will be available from 6:30 AM - 12:18 PM. Only Chometz in paper bags is accepted and permissible. Plastic bags are not permitted because they are a pollutant. PESACH KASHERING SERVICE Thornhill Community Pesach Kashering Service through COR will take place on Wednesday, March 21, 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm. Items must be completely clean and may not be used 24 hours prior to kashering. PESACH GARBAGE DEPOT A Pre-Pesach garbage disposal service has been arranged at the Garnet A. Williams Community Centre, 501 Clark Avenue West (Northwest Corner of the parking lot). The service will be available from March open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. On March 30 the depot NOON. Garbage will NOT be accepted outside of these times. Enter via the EAST ENTRANCE Depot is in the Southeast corner of the parking lot behind and to the east of the building). Times will be listed at a later date. SALE OF CHOMETZ Forms are available from the Shul office or on the website at FAST OF THE BECHOR SIYUM Friday, March 30th following each Shacharis service in the Rebbetzin Judy Taub Hall. A MESSAGE FROM THE SISTERHOOD PRESIDENTS We hope everyone had an amazing Purim, The sisterhood was very busy preparing before Purim and busy on Purim giving out all the Mishloach Manot, we wanted to give a special thank you to all those that helped make the Purim project a huge success we could not have done it with out all of you.
