Office hours are: Mon. - Thurs.: 9 AM - 5 PM Fri: 9 AM - 2 PM A PRACTICAL INCLUSION TIP So ALL of Us Feel Valued and Welcome at BAYT The Incense Offering and Inclusion In this week s Torah reading, Ki Sisa, we read about the eleven ingredients that went into the making of the incense offering, one of which was galbanum. Galbanum had a foul aroma. The question arises if the fragrance of the incense offering symbolized the Jewish people s desire to serve G-d in a manner pleasing to Him, why would a repugnant ingredient like galbanum be included? The Sages (Kereisos 6b) resolve this apparent contradiction by teaching us that sinners, symbolized by the galbanum, should be included with the community in its prayers. Thus the incense expresses the idea of Jewish unity, that everyone- the righteous and the sinner- has a share in the service of G-d. In the musaf amidah of Rosh Chodesh, we make a series of requests for life, peace, etc. In early siddurim, this series of requests included the request ul'chaparat pasha [ for atonement of sin ] on every Rosh Chodesh, possibly because we bring a special sin offering on Rosh Chodesh. In our communities, ul'chaparat pasha is included only during leap years. Some suggest that it was removed from the liturgy of normal years so that the normal Rosh Chodesh amidah would contain 12 requests, parallel to the year's normal 12 months, and in a year with a leap month we would add a thirteenth. Others suggest that this request was kept only for leap years in order to request atonement for the rabbinic court which added a month to the year, in case they had erred in their calculations. Some communities add ul'chaparat pasha every Rosh Chodesh of the leap year, but our practice is to add it only through Rosh Chodesh Adar II, perhaps because Nisan begins a new year. We do not include ul'chaparat pasha before Rosh hashanah at the start of the leap year, though, because the rabbinical court does not announce the leap month until after Rosh hashanah. 6 RENOVATION UPDATES The Boardroom will be closed from February 5 until further notice The Jarvis Freedman Library is closed indefinitely & off limits at all times. The whole Sisterhood Lobby, adjacent washrooms, cloakroom and stairwell is now under construction. That area will be completely off limits including Shabbos. Please use cloakrooms on floors 2 & 3. 7 INCLUSION and BAYT Teens Every week, a group of wonderful Teens perform beautiful acts of Chesed without any encouragement or fanfare. They visit the elderly. They visit the elderly, members and non-members who are ill, and children and adults with various special needs. They spend either a few minutes or up to an hour giving divrei Torah, making Kiddush, sharing some jokes or just stopping by to say Good Shabbos. If you know anyone who might like a visit or you know a Teen who might like to be part of this program, please contact Rich at rich@bayt.ca. BAYT YOUTH 3RD FLOOR YOUTH GROUPS LOCKDOWN UPDATE Over the last couple of months, the Shabbos Youth groups on the 3rd floor have practiced lockdown drills. The Children under direction of their group Leaders have completed these drills very efficiently. Within 10 seconds notice, over 100 Children were absolutely silent and all in their lockdown positions. Continued lockdown and fire drills will occur over the coming weeks. BDL bayteen DINE 'N' LEARN This program in it's 6th year consists of a 20 minute guest speaker, followed by chavrusa learning and ending with Dinner.
