Security guards and police will be instructed to deny entry to anyone trying to bring in a shtender before davening. The practice of immersing in a mikvah before Yom Kippur, ideally in the afternoon, dates back to the period of the Gaonim at least twelve hundred years ago. Historically, some even immersed with a formal berachah, although the modern practice is not to recite a berachah. Reasons for immersion vary, including: A formal ritual of purification from legal impurity; A formal ritual of spiritual elevation, to become like malachim; A stage in the process of repentance. [However, some recommend not to recite viduy (admission of sin), lest one recite G-d's Name in a place where people are not clothed.] Within the view that this immersion is for repentance, some recommend immersion even for women who are currently niddot. However, this practice is not common in our community. 6 ימים נוראים תשע ט YOMIM NORAIM 5779 HIGH HOLY DAYS SECURITY BAYT Safety and Security Protocol BAYT SAFETY AND SECURITY PROTOCOL BAYT Safety Team volunteers and facilities crew, RISK Protection Group security guards and York Regional Police work together to ensure your safety When Entering and Exiting BAYT Please cooperate with instructions and requests of Safety Team volunteers, security guards and police BAYT is private property. All persons and belongings are subject to search upon entry into BAYT. Entry may be denied if consent is not provided For High Holy Days, have your admission ticket displayed for entry Enter and exit ONLY through the Clark Avenue West doors or the parking lot doors. All emergency exits are alarmed and will signal Vaughan Fire Department Avoid congregating in front of BAYT on Clark Avenue West Please refrain from distracting volunteers, employees, security guards and police when inside BAYT Greet unfamiliar guests and offer your assistance Children should be with their parents, in a minyan or a youth program If you see something, say something. Remain aware of your surroundings Report suspicious persons, bags or parcels to a Safety Team volunteer, facility crew member, security guard or BAYT Executive member. Do not open unattended bags Weapons of any kind, whether licensed or not are prohibited at all times within the building. Any weapons found will be confiscated. In and Around BAYT Report suspicious persons or vehicles to a Safety Team volunteer, facility crew member, security guard or BAYT Executive member. Try to remember license plates, descriptions, etc. In the Event of a Physical Threat or Attack BAYT has procedures in place to call 911 in event of an emergency York Regional Police has an emergency tactical response protocol for BAYT Follow instructions of Safety Team volunteers, facilities crew, security guards or police Immediately evacuate BAYT Run and take cover. Plan to meet your family at an agreed upon secure location away from the vicinity of BAYT Do not pull a fire alarm in the event of a threat or attack In the Event of a Fire Alarm Follow posted emergency evacuation procedures Children in youth programs will be evacuated by youth leaders Do not congregate near the entry doors or the fire lanes. Evacuate to Safe Evacuation areas along perimeter of the parking lot Do not re-enter BAYT until given the all clear by BAYT leadership In the Event of a Medical Emergency Notify gabbai or usher. Each minyan has designated physicians and some EMTs Procedures are in place to call and direct first responders and access BAYT medical equipment Stand back. BAYT HIGH HOLY DAY YOUTH PROGRAMS SAFETY POLICIES In order to protect the safety of the children, ensure the success of the youth programs and preserve the decorum in the building, we ask that parents fully co-operate with the following procedures: 1. Children should not be roaming the halls. Children without a seat in an adult minyan should be in the appropriate youth program or with a parent. 2. Parents should accompany their children to the appropriate youth program. 3. Children in the Nursery and the Kindergarten programs must wear their labels and older children should have their tickets with them. 4. In order to protect the safety of all children, we ask that you do not send snacks with your children. Some children have very distinct and severe food allergies. A shared snack could result in a serious situation. Snacks will be provided in all youth programs on Rosh Hashanah morning and sandwiches (no peanut butter) will be provided for lunch on Yom Kippur. 5. Please check on your children at appropriate intervals. Older siblings will not be permitted to stay in the Nursery and Kindergarten programs with their brothers or sisters. 6. Strollers and baby carriages are not permitted in the building as they present a hazard in the event of a required evacuation. They may be stored in the utility room behind the lower floor elevator or outside by the bike rack to the right of the parking door entrance. For fire and safety purposes, this rule will be strictly enforced. Any strollers and carriages found inside the building will be removed to the designated storage space. 7.
