Second Aliyah: (29:1) What does Yaakov lifted his feet mean what does it add to the pasuk? Third Aliyah: (29:18) On what basis did Yaakov love Rachel he barely knew her!? Fourth Aliyah: (30:23-24) Why did Rachel name her son Yosef are there two reasons or one? Fifth Aliyah: (31:11-13) Why is the story of the angel appearing to Yaakov only cited by Yaakov when speaking to his wives and isn t described first by the narrative itself? Sixth Aliyah: (31:19) Did Rachel sin by stealing her father s terafim why should she be punished because of this act? Weekly Halacha - Parshas Vayeitzei R Mordechai Torczyner torczyner@torontotorah.com May one use an electric chanukiah? The consensus of many authorities is that electric lights do not fulfill the mitzvah. The reasons include: 1. The original enactment of lighting was established when electric lights were unknown, and so the Sages did not include this as a way to fulfill the mitzvah. 2. At the time we light, there must be enough fuel present for the flame to last for the entire period; electricity is continuously generated. [This will not apply for a batterypowered chanukiah, though.] 3. Fulfilling the mitzvah require direct kindling; flipping a switch or pressing a button only ignites the light indirectly (grama). 4. The point of lighting is to commemorate the menorah of the Beit hamikdash, which employed fuel and wick. 5. Each flame is supposed to be a single flame, not a medurah (lit. bonfire), since the original menorah had a single flame for each wick. If the filament arcs horizontally, it is a medurah. Nonetheless, some have ruled that one who cannot light a standard chanukiah should use an electric chanukiah, with incandescent bulbs, without a berachah. This may be relevant in a hospital or airplane, for example. 7 BAYT YOUTH INCLUSION and BAYT Teens Every week, a group of wonderful Teens perform beautiful acts of Chesed without any encouragement or fanfare. They visit the elderly. Members and Non members who are ill. Children and Adults with various special needs. They spend either a few minutes or up to an hour giving divrei torah, making Kiddush, sharing some jokes or just stopping by to say Good Shabbos. If you know anyone who might like a visit or you know a Teen who might like to be part of this program, please contact Rich at rich@bayt.ca. BDL bayteen DINE 'N' LEARN This program in it's 6th year consists of a 20 minute guest speaker, followed by chavrusa learning and ending with Dinner. Location: West Wing Room #1 BDL BOYS Wed.
