Optional CG (Media Package): Countdown Video OPENER HOST: Hello, everyone! I bet you re wondering why I have a computer. Well, this month is all about updating your operating system. You see, every computer has this thing called an operating system. It s what makes the computer work properly. An operating system can t just stay the same, though. It has to be updated. That s what it means when you get those pop-ups on your computer saying, Update now! You and I have an operating system, too. Every day, we get to choose the way we act and how we REact. When something happens to us, we need to update the way we react. We need to choose to have self-control. CG: Self-control Slide Self-control is choosing to do what you should even when you don t want to. Self-control helps you think before you act. For example, you might have a disagreement with a friend, and you might FEEL like getting really mad and losing your temper, but instead, you update the way you react. You choose to let it go. You choose to forgive your friend. Self-control is kind of like a wall that keeps you from trouble, which brings me to today s game. I call it Virus Warning. 3 ALL of you get to play this game, and it s boys versus girls! Boys, you can go on this side of the room. Girls, you can go on this side. Get the kids to split up by gender. Here are your computer viruses blue for the boys and red for the girls. Put the bin of crumpled-up blue papers in front of the boys, and put the bin of crumpled-up red papers in front of the girls. I ll stand inside this circle of tape on the stage. It s my firewall. We ll see if it can protect me from the viruses you throw my way. You ll throw from behind your line. (Point to the tape lines on both sides.) Make sure everyone on your team can get in and grab a piece of paper, too. Your goal is to get more viruses of your color landing on me or inside the taped circle. You ll have 60 seconds to throw as many as you can. (Point to small group leaders) My helpers here will toss back any papers that didn t get into the circle so you can try again. Are you ready to play Virus Warning? (Pause for response.) All right! Ready, set, go! Host sets her phone timer for 60 seconds. SFX: High-energy music Host comments on the action. Leaders toss back any papers that don t make it inside the tape circle. After 60 seconds are up, Host and Leaders determine the winning team, based on how many papers of each color end up inside the tape circle. That was crazy! You really got me. I guess I do need to update my operating system! Now go ahead and toss any papers you see back into those bins, and jump up on your feet, because it s time for us to sing and worship God together. Host helps the kids throw the papers into the bins. Set the bins out of the way and then exit. WORSHIP Hey, everybody! It s time for us to get on our feet and get ready to sing. As we begin this new year, I know one thing for sure: I want to go God s way. Whatever He has for me, I m all in. Is anyone else here ready to go God s way? (Pause for response.) Yeah, I believe it! 4 That s right. We re giving it all to go His way! Yes, that rocked. It's now time for communion. If you've been saved and baptized, you can come up and take a cracker and juice. Everyone should use this time to pray to God and thank Him for sending us His son, Jesus. You may also worship Him in song at this time. If you brought an offering, you can bring that up at this time as well. God s Word never fails, and it never changes. Psalm 119:160 says: All your words are true. All your laws are right. They last forever (NIrV). We can trust what God says in His Word. We can believe who He says we are. We are children of God. Let s give Him our worship as we sing. SFX: Who You Say I Am / track n/a from Who You Say I Am single CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide STORY SETTING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Hello, everyone! It s so great to be here to kick off our month talking about self-control. This month we re looking at some really great verses from the book of Proverbs that will help us update the way we react. Most of the proverbs in this book were wise sayings of King Solomon one of the wisest people who ever lived. God made Solomon really wise and then God inspired him, and others, to write down some of the wisdom God had given him. Today, let s look at one of Solomon s wise sayings in Proverbs 25:28. CG: Proverbs 25:28 Slide A person without self-control is like a city whose walls are broken through. Solomon was saying that if we don t have self-control, we re like a city whose walls are crumbling and have been crashed through. Of course, our cities today don t have walls built around them. You can go to New York or London and you won t have to get past a big wall to get inside. But in Solomon s day, cities were surrounded with large, thick walls. Those walls kept the people safe inside the city when another group of people chose to attack The rethink Group. All rights reserved. 9

5 Self-control does the same thing for us. It s like a defense that keeps us safe from harm. It s like a good, sturdy wall of protection. CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide Let's watch our video to learn more! CG: Play bible story WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Solomon was wise enough to know that God is our protector. God has given us the ability to choose to protect ourselves by choosing self-control. When we do that, it s like we build up a strong city wall that will keep us safe from harm. Solomon knew that this is true. CG: Bottom Line Slide Doing what you should can keep you safe. Don t just do whatever pops into your head. Update the way you react. Stop and think about how you can [Basic Truth] make the wise choice. Listen to good advice from people you can trust, like your parents, your teachers, or your Small Group Leader. If your parents told you not to play a certain game on the computer, God can help you be wise. Put up your city wall, your shield, your force field. Choose not to play it. God can help you choose self-control. If your brother is driving you crazy and you feel like shouting something mean, put up your city wall. Choose NOT to say what s swirling in your head. God can help you choose self-control. If you do, you can keep yourself from harm. Doing what you should can keep you safe. If that sounds tough, that s because it is! But here s what s awesome. God can help us! Jesus sent His Holy Spirit to help us. We need His wisdom to be able to react with self-control. Let s pray and ask God to help us do that. CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide PRAY STORYTELLER: Dear God, thank You for the wisdom You gave Solomon. What he said is so true that we can stay safe when we have self-control. We need Your help to do that. Please help us choose to do what we SHOULD do instead of what we FEEL like doing. Help us to protect ourselves with a strong wall of self-control.
