FEATURE PRESENTATION: We know that sometimes you want to mix things up to keep kids engaged with the most important thing you do every week in your Large Group: tell the Bible story. You also like having a back-up plan in case your Host or Storyteller cancels at the last minute. This is why our Large Group script is interchangeable with the Feature Presentation DVDs so you can plug and play the way you need to each week. Similar to the flow we create with our Large Group script, Feature Presentation also has weekly Intro and Outro videos with a Host. The Intros set up the Bible story and virtue, while the Outros smoothly transition from Large Group to Small Group. For the 4th 5th grade age group, we recommend playing 252 Movie, which takes you through a fully dramatized presentation of the story in a contemporary and comedic sketch of the Bible story. Help the kids in your ministry make a U-turn with this month s widget, a booklet of ten U-FIRST TICKETS. Parents can challenge each child to look for opportunities throughout the month to put others first, whether it s letting someone ahead of them in line or allowing a sibling to choose the evening s movie. When a child puts someone else first, parents can reward them with a U-First Ticket. After a kid has collected all ten tickets, families decide together upon a reward. PAGE 6

OPENER HOST: What s up, guys? Thanks for being part of the [your environment s name] United Football Club! And I m not talking about American football. I m talking FOOTball. Fútbol. Soccer! How many of you have played soccer in your life? (Pause.) Cool, almost all of you! Are any of you on a soccer team? Have any of you actually scored a goal? (Pause.) Awesome! Kick the ball into the goal on stage. (To a kid who has scored a goal) Now, let me ask you a question. Before you kicked the ball into the goal, do you remember who PASSED it to you? Yeah! That person is just as important as the one who actually scores. (If there isn t anyone who has scored a goal) I mean, that s what everyone wants to do, right to have the glory of kicking the goal? But do you know who s just as important? The person who PASSES it to the one who kicks the ball into the net. CG: Humility Slide Host gets one of the kids up front to pass the ball to him and then kicks it into the goal again. You see, this month we re talking about HUMILITY. Humility is putting others first by giving up what you think you deserve. And that can be tough! If we re not careful, we can go through life thinking only about ourselves thinking me first all the time. But God wants us to be humble. He wants us to put OTHERS first. Think about it. (Hold up soccer ball.) When you re playing soccer, you can t win by yourself. You can t win without your team. One of the first things you learn when you start to play is that there are defenders in the back who will hardly ever get the chance to score. But their job is just as important! And the same is true in other sports. (Hold up baseball.) Some of the best baseball players are just okay hitters, but they re really great defenders. They get an assist when they throw someone out at first on a grounder. Or they might lay down a sacrifice bunt to move the runner along instead of trying to smack a home run. (Hold up basketball.) In basketball, assists are just as important as points per game. For example, a solid way you get an easy dunk is if your teammates set a pick for you and set you up with the perfect pass. (Hold up football.) Or what about football? Any good running back or receiver or kick returner needs the rest of his team to do what? (Pause.) Yeah, block! The person with the ball needs a clear lane to run, and they can t make that happen by themselves. PAGE 7

8 When all of that happens when a team works together you score a touchdown. You get the dunk. You score a goal. You WIN by putting each other first. And the announcer goes crazy! VIDEO: Goal called by Andres Cantor And the crowd goes wild! Pull out the vuvuzela and blow it forcefully. Trust me, when the whole crowd does it, it sounds a lot more impressive! VIDEO: Vuvuzela crowd In fact, I want to see how well YOU guys can blow a vuvuzela. That s what these horns are called. True story! Let me get three of you up here for a vuvuzela competition. We ll see who can do it best! Choose three kids to come up on stage, and hand each of them a vuvuzela. All right, you guys. Let s hear each of you give it a try! Let each of them attempt to blow their vuvuzela. That was amazing! All of you were exceptional. But there can only be one winner. And today it s [kid s name]! All of you can keep your vuvuzela to practice at home. Your parents can thank me later. In our Bible story for today, we ll meet someone who knew what humility was all about. He saw a dirty job that needed to be done. And we ll see what He did about it. But first, it s time to stand up, get loud, and SING to our awesome God. Here we go! Worship Leaders enter. Host exits. WORSHIP WORSHIP LEADER: Good morning to you. Please stand to your feet and let s kick off our worship by shouting God s praise. He s our everything! Let s make His praise loud today and every day! SFX: Today and Everyday / track 4 from Alive Yeah! It s so good to sing the praises of Jesus. Isaiah 26:8 says: Lord, we are living the way your laws command us to live. We are waiting for you to act. We want your honor and fame to be known (NIrV). Let s give all that we are to making Jesus and His praise known. Let s be a generation who says our God is the Lord! 9 Storyteller enters. Worship Leaders set up the tarp where Host will stand. Worship Leaders exit. SETTING UP THE TELLER: Hey, guys! (Hold up Bible.) I ve got an incredible TRUE story of humility to share with you today. And it all started one day in the city of Jerusalem, when Jesus came to town. You see, every year, thousands of Jewish people traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover and remember how God had saved them from slavery in Egypt. Some people believed Jesus was a king sent by God to take control of the government and rescue them from the Romans who were ruling at the time. When they heard Jesus was coming, they ripped branches from the palm trees and rushed out to the road. Host enters, jogging in place, toweling off, still with his soccer uniform on, but his cleats are extremely muddy. He has the duffel bag with him. He jogs onto the tarp. HOST: YEAH! Jesus is going to take OVER! (Singing) HEEEE is the CHAAAAAMPION, my FRIIIIIIENDS! Host picks up the misting fan and starts waving it back and forth like a flag. TELLER: Right. It was sort of like that. The crowds gathered as Jesus and His friends approached the city. Instead of riding a powerful horse like a king, Jesus rode on the back of a donkey. But that didn t bother the people. Many of them hoped He would put together an army and fight back against the Romans. They shouted HOSANNA, which basically meant, Yeah, Jesus! HOST: (Shouting like the Andres Cantor video, from the Opener) HOOOOOSAAAAANAAAAAAA! TELLER: It was basically like a stadium full of soccer fans blowing these. Host holds up the vuvuzela and nods to the three kids in the crowd who have one. Host leads them in blowing them together. The people waved their palm branches and even threw their robes across the road as Jesus passed by. Jesus could have made himself King right then and there. But after He entered the city, He continued to teach and point people to God over the next few days. PASSOVER TELLER: When Passover arrived, Jesus and His friends gathered together in the upstairs room of someone s house to share the meal together. Host starts eating orange slices and drinking Gatorade. HOST: Oh, good. I could really use some of this. Gotta stay hydrated, you know. PAGE 9

10 TELLER: (To Host) Ummm, well, it was the Passover feast, not a hydration station. So there weren t any oranges or Gatorade, but yeah, I guess that s the idea. (Look at Host s feet.) Oh, and by the way, what s up with your cleats? HOST: Oh, yeah. Well, you know. Playing hard, getting muddy. TELLER: Gotcha. Well, that s actually not all that different from what the disciples feet must have looked like. After all, they didn t have paved roads. So that meant mud and dust were everywhere! Normally there would be a servant around to wash everyone s feet. But not at this Passover meal. The disciples were probably wondering if this was the time Jesus was going to make himself King. He had been saying things like: I am going to be lifted up... I will bring all people to myself (John 12:32, NIrV). The time seemed perfect, with all the people there in Jerusalem for the Passover. JESUS WASHES FEET TELLER: But when Jesus stood up, it wasn t to make an important announcement. Instead, He rose from the table and removed His outer robe. He had a towel and a bowl of water. He knelt down and began to WASH His disciples feet! Storyteller holds up the squirt water bottle. Of course, it didn t look at all like this. But you get the idea. Storyteller squirts the water onto Host s cleats, cleaning all the mud off. HOST: Wait a minute. Wait a minute. Time out. (Do a time out hand signal.) Jesus couldn t possibly do that. I mean, He s JESUS! He was going to be the KING! TELLER: (To Host) That s right. The disciples couldn t believe it either! But it was true. Jesus, the King, was doing the work of a lowly servant washing their gross feet. PETER PROTESTS TELLER: Peter said... Storyteller nods at Host. Host opens Bible to John 13:6 and reads. HOST: Lord... are you going to wash my feet? (NIrV). TELLER: And Jesus said: You don t realize now what I am doing. But later you will understand (John 13:7 NIrV). And Peter was like, No, You can t! I m not worthy! But Jesus said: Unless I wash you, you can t share life with me (John 13:8 NIrV). So Peter was all in! He said... PAGE 10

11 Storyteller nods to Host to look at the Bible again. Host reads John 13:9 from the Bible. HOST: Lord... not just my feet! Wash my hands and my head too! (NIrV). TELLER: And when Jesus was finished washing the disciples feet, He returned to His place at the table. Look at what He said next. CG: John 13:12-15 (Reading from Bible) Do you understand what I have done for you?... I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet. So you also should wash one another s feet. I have given you an example. You should do as I have done for you, (NIrV). Of course, Jesus was asking His friends to do more than splash water on each other s feet. He wanted them to put others FIRST by serving them. Thanks, [Host s name]. Great job today! Host exits. WRAPPING UP THE TELLER: And you know what? That wasn t all Jesus said to the disciples. Jesus made it clear for His friends. The most important thing any of them could do was to quietly put the wants and needs of others ahead of their own. This is what God did for us! God put US first by sending Jesus His perfect, sinless Son. God knew that we needed Jesus to be our Savior. We all sin we all mess up and our sin separates us from God. But when Jesus died on the cross, He paid the price for all of our sins, and He offered to give us His clean, sin-free record so we could be close to God again! All we have to do is BELIEVE and put our trust in what Jesus did for us, and when we do, we can RECEIVE the gift of eternal life. God put us first by sending Jesus. Jesus put us first by SERVING us. And let s take a look at our Bottom Line for today. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] I can put others first by serving them. You see, just like Jesus challenged the disciples, He s challenging us. We should put others first. And we can do that by serving others. But this isn t always easy, so let s pray and ask God for some help. PRAY TELLER: God, thank You for loving us so much that You put US first by sending Your Son Jesus. Thank You for making a way for us to know You personally and have a relationship with You forever! Thank You for this amazing story of how Jesus served His friends by washing their feet. Please help us to follow His example and look for ways to serve the people around us. We love You! And we ask these things in Jesus name, amen. PAGE 11

What an amazing Savior we have. Let s take a few minutes to worship Him now. SFX: What a Savior / track 9 from Turn It Up CLOSER HOST: Guys, think about this for a second. Jesus is God s Son! He DESERVED to be treated like a king. But instead, He spent His entire life on earth putting other people first listening to them, teaching them, healing them, and even washing their really dirty, yucky feet! He showed us over and over again in different ways that we can put others first by serving them by putting aside what WE want to be doing right now to help someone out. Like maybe you ve finally finished your homework. YES! You ve got a whole half hour to play your favorite video game before dinner. But your little brother wants you to build LEGO s with him instead. Playing with your brother for 30 minutes is an incredible way to put him first! Or maybe your best friend sprained her wrist and can t go play mini golf with everyone. You could choose not to go, too, so you can hang out with your friend and cheer her up. Check out our memory verse this month. It s a really great one: Philippians 2:3. You see, that s the attitude we need to have. Every single day we can find creative ways to show humility by serving others, whether it s in big ways or small ones.
