Cardstock for Game Keys - one set for each small group Set up items around the Large Group room that correspond to the clues (door, pillow, mirror, alarm clock Optional: Fill the room with other random items to make the game more challenging. Create a stack of Clue #1 sheets for the Host to pass out. Place the Key #1 and Clue #2 sheets at a door. Place the Key #2 and Clue #3 sheets under a pillow. Place the Key #3 and Clue #4 sheets next to a mirror. Place the Key #4 sheets under an alarm clock. 2 Bible Story Outline Week 4 Don t Stop Believin (Trust in the Lord) Proverbs 3:5-6 (Supporting: 1 Kings 10:1-10) SETTING UP THE STORY King Solomon: one of the wisest people who ever lived He asked God for wisdom to help him lead the Israelites Solomon wrote down wise sayings in the book of Proverbs Proverbs 3:5-6 When you trust God, He makes your path like a smooth, straight road That doesn t mean everything will go the way you want it to Trusting God is the beginning of wisdom TRUST WITH YOUR HEART Trust in the Lord with your all heart Even if things aren t going your way or you aren t sure what to do, believe that God is with you DON T DEPEND ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING Do not depend on your own understanding Sometimes we think we know how to do something, but it ends up in disaster We need instructions God gives us instructions: the Bible, church, asking people questions about how to make wise choices Trust God for wisdom; don t just trust in yourself STRAIGHT PATHS We have to DO something with what we ve learned In all your ways obey him : say yes to God Remember what God says and do it He will make your paths smooth and straight He ll be with us, show us the wise way to go He ll help you live His way in the midst of anything you have to face WRAPPING UP THE STORY Live a life of wisdom (Proverbs 3:5-6) God is the Source of ALL wisdom We have to trust Him to give us wisdom as we make choices every day BL: If you want to be wise, trust God to give you wisdom. Welcome to another week hunting for wisdom! What IS wisdom? CG: Wisdom Slide Wisdom is finding out what you should do and doing it. The search has been on all month. We ve talked about how to hang out with wise people and how to ask God for wisdom. We know that all wisdom comes from Him. But wisdom doesn t just come to you; you ve got to search for it. Wisdom is ALWAYS worth searching for! Speaking of searching for something, I just LOVE scavenger hunts. Don t you? I ve got a super-fun scavenger hunt game for you today. 4 Can I have all Small Group Leaders up front, please? Worship Leaders enter, carrying the caution tape. They start to tie up the Leaders around their torsos and then they exit. (To audience, referencing the Worship Leaders) Our friends here will be tying up your Leaders, and it s your job to free them! Each group will race to solve four different clues. I ll give you the first clue when we start. Hold up one of the Clue #1 sheets. The first clue will tell you where to find the first key. Hold up a Key #1 sheet. You ll race to that spot, get the key, and pick up your next clue. Once you have all four keys, THEN you can unlock your Leader. After you ve found them all, race back to your Leader and tear their caution tape off of them. The first group to do so wins! Who will free their Leader first? There s only one way to find out. Are you ready? On your marks, get set, GO! SFX: Upbeat music Cheer for the kids and comment on the action. Wow great job, everyone! I bet your Leaders are so glad you freed them... and just in time for us to worship. Everybody on your feet! Host exits as Worship Leaders enter. 4. 5 SETTING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Hey, everybody! We ve been talking all month about wisdom, and we ve also been talking about a certain wise king named Solomon. If anyone knew how to discover God s wisdom, it was Solomon. He was one of the wisest people to ever live! When Solomon became king, he asked God for wisdom to help him lead the Israelites. One of the things Solomon did for us was to write down a bunch of wise sayings or proverbs. What he wrote down makes up much of what we now call the book of Proverbs in the Bible. (Hold up Bible.) Let s look at another one of those Proverbs. It gives us a great road map for living with wisdom. Here s what Solomon wrote in Proverbs 3:5-6. CG: Proverbs 3:5-6 Slide Open the Bible to Proverbs 3:5-6 and read. Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding. In all your ways obey him. Then he will make your paths smooth and straight, (NIrV). When you trust God, He makes your path like a smooth, straight road. Step down onto the road taped on your floor. Note: If you don t have the option of taping your floor, you can just go with the CG visuals in the story. What does that really mean, though? Does it mean that if you trust God, you ll never have any problems, and everything will go exactly the way you want it to? (Pause.) Not exactly. It means that trusting God is the beginning of wisdom. Let me explain. Start to walk along your taped road. (Over the course of the story, you ll travel the whole road through the audience.) TRUST WITH YOUR HEART STORYTELLER: We ll start with the heart. CG: Heart Slide (Proverbs 3:5a) Remember how these verses start? Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Trusting is a way of saying putting your confidence in or believing in something or someone. What does it mean to trust God with all your heart? Get some answers from the audience. Those were some great answers! Trusting God with all your heart means that you totally believe Him. You put your faith in Him when you need help. It means that even if things aren t going your way, or you aren t sure what to do, you believe that God is with you. You [Basic Truth] trust Him no matter what. DON T DEPEND ON YOUR OWN UNDERSTANDING STORYTELLER: What about your mind? CG: Brain Slide (Proverbs 3:5b) Move up a little farther on the tape road. 6 I don t know about you, but sometimes I get into situations where I think I know what I m doing, but I don t, and then I make a huge mess. Like maybe you think you know how to do a project for school, and you spend hours working on it, only to look at the directions after you re done and realize that you did the whole thing wrong. It s kind of like trying to put a LEGO set together without following any directions. One small mistake can mess up the entire thing. Have you ever had a time when you thought you knew how to do something, but it ended in disaster? I think we all have. Think about it. Why do teachers and LEGO sets give us directions? (Pause for response.) So we know what to do. We can t depend on our own understanding. God gives us instructions for life. He helps us [Basic Truth] make the wise choice by giving us the Bible. He gives us this great church, where we can ask really wise people questions about how to make wise choices. It s like Solomon was saying: Trust God for wisdom; don t just trust in yourself. God gave you a brain to think things through, but you still need His help His directions. That way you can make wise choices and not mess up. If you try to figure things out on your own, you ll eventually mess up. Don t trust your own understanding. Listen to God. Move up a little farther on the tape road. STRAIGHT PATHS STORYTELLER: Now we ve come to the part where we have to DO something with what we ve learned. Remember, wisdom is finding out what you should do and doing it. Trusting with your whole heart and not depending on your own understanding that s how you find out what you should do. This next part is how you do it! Do you remember what came next in Solomon s verses? CG: Two Thumbs Up Slide (Proverbs 3:6a) In all your ways obey him. That s like saying yes to God two thumbs up! No matter where you are or what you re doing, you remember what God says, and you do it. You obey God. You live out what you believe. If you are struggling with someone who isn t nice to you, you remember that God wants you to love others. You treat them with love and patience even when it s hard. If you re struggling with whether or not to tell the truth, remember that God wants you to be honest. And then be honest. Move up a little farther on the tape road. CG: Straight Road Slide (Proverbs 3:6b) Do you remember the last part? Then he will make your paths smooth and straight. If we obey God in all our ways, HE will make our paths smooth and straight. That means that God will be with us. He ll make a path in front of us that s smooth and direct. He ll show us the wise way to go. That doesn t mean that everything in your life will go perfectly. It means that God will help you live HIS way in the midst of anything you might have to face. You know He ll be right there with you every step of the way. Move to the end of the tape road. 7 Trust in the LORD with all your heart. Do not depend on your own understanding. In all your ways obey him. Then he will make your paths smooth and straight, (NIrV). God is the Source of ALL wisdom. He wants to show us the best path for our life. But we have to ask Him for it. We have to trust Him to give us wisdom as we make choices every day. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] If you want to be wise, trust God to give you wisdom. You can trust God for the journey ahead. He will never leave you. He will ALWAYS give you wisdom to know what to do. For some of you, maybe the idea of trusting God is something new. As Christians we believe that God created us and loves us as our heavenly father. As humans we have a hard time understanding who God is. We are not perfect like God, so when we do things that go against God s wisdom it pushes us farther away from God. God doesn t want that to happen so he sent Jesus to earth to show us the way. Since Jesus was perfect He took the punishment for all the bad things, which the Bible calls sin. We can learn about God s wisdom but reading about how Jesus lived his life, but most importantly if we ask God he will forgive us of all our sin, and send his Spirit to live inside us and guide us through life. Here in the izone we call this the ABC s of salvation. To be saved God wants us to A- admit that we do bad things and these bad things keep us from God. Then there is the B. We need to believe that Jesus died for you and is God s son. Because Jesus came to earth and died on the cross he takes on the punishment for all of the bad things that we admit to doing. The final step is C, Confess. You pray to God and confess or tell God you are sorry for the sin or bad things in your life, ask Jesus to forgive you and then promise to do your best to make Jesus the most important thing in your life. If you have never done this before and you want to know more about asking Jesus in your life please talk to one of your small group leaders. Solomon was so wise! He knew to trust God more than himself when it came to wisdom. If we re honest, that can be tough to do especially when we re facing something that we don t understand. That s the thing about wisdom, though. Sometimes it takes time. We might not understand everything that s might happen to us in life, but remember; we can only see part of the path. God sees the whole story. He sees the big picture. [Bottom Line] If you want to be wise, trust God to give you wisdom. You can be like Solomon when you trust your future to God. Ask Him to help you grow in wisdom. Read your Bible. Ask people who are wise to help you. Pray to God and talk to Him about what s going on in your life. Ask Him for the wisdom you need for ANY situation. You ll talk some more about that back in Small Group. Have a great time!
