1 Curriculum Materials for 4 th and 5 th Grades CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT: STAND UP: GET IN THE STORY We re excited for another fun month discovering what it means to Stand Up and get in the story. And we re doing it with superheroes! Get your cityscapes and primary colors ready to build comic book scenes throughout your environment. If you don t know where to start, we have some suggestions in the Large Group script. BEFORE KIDS LEAVE THE 5TH GRADE, WE WANT THEM TO UNDERSTAND 3 BASIC TRUTHS: WISDOM I need to make the wise choice. FAITH I can trust God no matter what. 2 STATEMENT OF FAITH ABOUT GOD God is the one and only true God, yet He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is the Creator, so everything belongs to Him and is under His control. God is holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and loving. God is all knowing and purposeful, so He s at work to bring about His will. No person, thing, or idea compares to God. ABOUT PEOPLE People are made in God s image and for His pleasure. But everybody falls short of God s intention, or ideal, for people. In other words, everyone has sinned. As a result, we are all separated from Him, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each of us. 5 GOOD-TO-KNOW TERMS SMALL GROUP LEADER One consistent leader for the same 8-10 children all year We suggest you start and end in small group so kids connect relationally with one leader and other similar-aged peers. If you have multiple small groups meeting in one room, try using circle area rugs to give each group their own spot. Offer as many of the activities as your time, space, and resources allow. 3 July Week 015 Small Group 4-5 FOR LEADERS ONLY GOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN AND GOD S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD S BIG STORY This summer we ll be spending June and July discovering more about what the Bible has to say about conviction standing for what s right, even Lots of people have conviction, but often when they act with conviction they come across as arrogant or smug. But that s not what conviction is about at all. It s not about what a person thinks is right because it s too easy to become convicted about the wrong thing. Conviction has to be rooted in something deeper and more dependable than a personal opinion. It needs to be rooted in Scripture and what God says is right. And often it s not even just standing for something that s right; it s also about standing for something that s right in the right way. And that takes some practice, especially because standing for what s right and showing conviction, may not win any popularity contests. That s why we re taking the summer to help kids understand a little bit more about Conviction. Conviction is standing for what s right, even when others don t. Let s take Jesus for example. Even for Jesus, the Son of God, it wasn t always popular to do the right thing. Sometimes doing the right thing meant hanging out with tax collectors, blessing the little children, or even forgiving someone who had done something wrong. No matter what it was that Jesus needed to do, He did it because it was the right thing to do. But doing the right thing often made Jesus stand apart from some of the rich and powerful people of His time. They didn t like what He was doing or saying, but Jesus never let those crowds persuade Him to go against what God, His Father, wanted Him to do. Even when it meant going to the cross to die, Jesus knew that it was the right thing, and He did it. Jesus was able to live with conviction because He knew the will of His Father, and that gave Him strength and courage. In the same way, God has given us the ability to know what is right and the ability to do it. You see, when we are fueled by God s character, we will stand up for the things that matter to God. This week we re discovering For week two of July we ll look at Daniel 5. After several years have passed, there s a new king in town: Belshazzar. He threw a huge party for his friends, but then a hand appeared and started writing on the wall. Daniel came and interpreted the writing. Even though what he said would definitely put a damper on the festivities, he told the king the truth. Bottom Line: You can stand for what s right, even when it s not popular. God can help you stand for what s right, even when what you need to say might not be the news people want to hear. Our memory verse for the month is Ephesians 6:10, Finally, let the Lord make you strong. Depend on His mighty power. No matter the situation, God s power can help you when you need to have conviction. 3

If you want to keep the cards, at the end of the month, you would have a deck of age-appropriate Would You Rather Cards for future uses and conversation starters. Writing on the Wall Paper (scrap paper will work) Pencils : MAKE THE CONNECTION (Choose as many of these activities as you like.) * If you don t have time to do all these activities, be sure to do activity #. Activity #1 and 3 are particularly good for children who need to move in order to stay engaged. Popular or Not? 6 July 015 SG min 5-30 min Ping Pong Bounce (memory verse activity / great for active learners) Bible or mobile device with Bible app Any type of timer, e.g., a mobile device, a stopwatch, a clock, Lead Small app, etc. Pr ovide 1 to 3 sets of supplies depending on how many kids will be doing the activity simultaneously. Each set consists of: o 6 Verse Phrase cups: Each cup has a couple of words from the memory verse written on it. Either write the words on the cup with a marker or use masking tape and tape the words to the cup. You will use the cups again in Week 4. o 6 Verse Phrase Ping-Pong balls: Each Ping-Pong ball has a couple of words from the memory verse written on it. The words on each Ping-Pong ball should match the words on each of the cups. Either write the words directly on the ping pong balls with a marker or use masking tape and tape the words to the Ping-Pong balls. You will use the Ping-Pong balls again in Weeks 3 and 4. Additional Resources: Make copies on cardstock of this week s GodTime and Parent Cue cards. At the beginning of each week, you ll read about one of the many people who got into God s story by standing up for what s right. Then, each day of the week, this book will take you through a new devotional thought or activity that helps you discover ways you can stand up and get in the story! 6

Depend on his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10, NIrV : FOCUS THE ENERGY Focus the energy on today s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Pray for the kids as they learn and unpack God s truth about what He says is right. Pray that they would WANT to know what God has to say about how they live their lives and that they would have the desire to stand for what s right. Ask God to lead you to speak the specific truths that kids need to hear today. 1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEA What You Need: Offering container; Would You Rather Cards Week Activity Page BASIC TRUTH: I can trust God no matter what. Invite kids to put their offerings in the offering container as they arrive. Continuing our game from last week, let kids each take turns picking a card from the stack and reading it to the group. Each card has a would you rather question for the group to answer. Encourage kids to explain their answers, but encourage them that there are no right answers. It s just fun to hear everyone s choices and the reasons behind them. Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Make It Personal with a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another. WRITING ON THE WALL What You Need: Paper, pencils Give kids paper and pencil. Explain you will print a word on the wall with your finger using all capital letters. You will pause between each letter. You will write each letter once before going on to the next letter in the word. No repeats so they must pay attention. Start with easy words like: CAT, PIG, SKY, GOD, JESUS and move on to harder words: KING, LOVE, TRUTH, STAND UP, DANIEL. 7

Ephesians 6:10, NIrV BASIC TRUTH: I can trust God no matter what. : MAKE THE CONNECTION Make the connection of how today s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. 1. POPULAR OR NOT? (application activity / possible large group activity / great for active learners) What You Need: No supplies needed Call out either/or options for the kids. For example, hamburger or hot dog? As you say the first option, point to a wall on one side of the room and point to the opposite wall as you say the second option. Kids run to the wall that stands for the option they would choose. Here are some examples of options to read: Batman or Superman Water or chocolate milk Dogs or cats Oreos or broccoli Movies or music Good looks or personality Beach or mountains One Direction or Elmo After each option, ask the kids which choice was the most popular making sure to stress that the most popular choice is the one most people picked. Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Make It Personal with a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another What You Say: We have to make lots of choices every day. Some are easy, and some aren t. Some choices we make are popular and some are not popular. In our story today, no one else could read the writing on the wall. So, Daniel could have said what the people and the king wanted to hear, but instead he said what God told him to say, even when it wasn t going to be the most popular message. Daniel trusted God and we should too. Showing conviction and standing for what is right, even when it is not popular is always a wise choice. 9

MESSAGE ON THE WALL (review the Bible story / application activity) What You Need: Butcher paper, markers/pencils, tape, Bibles, Scripture Cards Activity Page Tape the butcher paper on the wall and divide the kids into four groups. What You Say: Imagine you are Daniel and you are at a HUGE celebration for King Belshazzar. Suddenly, on the wall a mysterious hand writes four words. (Write these words on the butcher paper: Tire, Power, Everything, Gentle. Say the words as you write them.) The king asks to you to interpret the meaning behind the four words. Like Daniel, you turn to the One True God for guidance and help. (Pass out the Bibles to the kids.) To interpret the writing on the wall, you are led to the following passages in the Bible, the Word of the One True God. Hand each group a card with a verse written on it. Instruct the kids to look up their verse and, as a group, match their verse to one of the words on the wall. Discuss the kids answers and what each word has to do with showing conviction. Listed below are the verses and potential discussion topics: Tire: Don t ever get tired of doing the right thing. Thessalonians 3:13, NIrV (Even when it is frustrating and hard, showing conviction, standing for what is right even when others don t is always a wise choice; this verse is God s way of encouraging us not to give up standing for what s right.) Power: Finally, let the Lord make you strong. Depend on his mighty power. Ephesians 6:10, NIrV (Remember you can trust God no matter what; He will give you His power to help you stand for what s right even when it s not popular.) Everything: I can do all this by the power of Christ. He gives me strength. Philippians 4:13, NIrV (Christ wasn t concerned with being popular, He made His decisions based on what God wanted Him to do. Christ s example gives us strength to stand for what is right. Christ also demonstrated it is important to stand for what God wants and not simply for what is popular.) Gentle: You are God s chosen people. You are holy and dearly loved. So put on tender mercy and kindness as if they were your clothes. Don t be proud. Be gentle and patient. Colossians 3:1, NIrV (Speaking truth like Daniel did can be hard and God wants us to remember to be kind and gentle with our words, especially when we are speaking His truths.) What You Say: Just like for Daniel, God is there for us too. He gave us His Word to encourage us, to instruct us and to remind us He dearly loves us. Standing for what is right, especially when it is not popular, is hard. When your friends all want to watch a movie you know your parents don t want you to watch, it is hard to say, I am not going to watch that movie. Or 10

11 July 015 SG min 5-30 min when someone says something mean about someone else, it s hard to say, We shouldn t talk about them like that. It isn t nice. It is hard to be kind to someone who is mean, or ask the new kid at school to sit with you at lunch. But God knew it would be hard for us to show conviction, to stand for what is right, even So, God gave us His Word to help us stand for what s right, even when it s not popular. (Share a verse that helps to remind you to focus on God s desires and not on what is popular.) 5-6 Challenge What You Need: Notebooks or journals from last week, extras; pens; markers We are challenging kids this month to Stand Up and Get in the Story and to realize they are part of God s big story. To continue the project this week, instruct kids to add the second chapter to their book s Table of Contents, Message for Me. God gave a message to King Belshazzar and God gives us messages, especially through His Word. Ask the kids to write a verse from the Bible that is meaningful to them. It can be their favorite verse, a verse that is encouraging, or this month s memory verse. Just like Daniel interpreted God s message to King Belshazzar, have kids interpret what the verse means to them and write or illustrate the interpretation in their book. When kids are finished, collect the books for next week. If you lead mostly older kids, consider asking these discussion questions: What are the advantages to standing for what is right even when it is not popular? What are the disadvantages? How can you determine if you should stand up and show conviction? What are some examples of situations where you might be called to stand for what is right? When you see something happening that is unfair or not right, is it important to stand up right away? Or is it sometimes important to wait and think about what to do or ask others for help? How do you tell the difference between these two times, and what do you do while you wait? 3. PING PONG BOUNCE (memory verse activity) What You Need: Verse Phrase cups; Verse Phrase Ping-Pong balls; timer Line the six prepared Verse Phrase cups up on a table. Give a kid six matching Verse Phrase Ping-Pong balls. The object is to bounce the Ping-Pong ball off the table and into the corresponding cup while reciting the memory verse. The kid has one minute to see if she can get all the Ping-Pong balls into the correct cups. If you have enough supplies, let two kids do the challenge simultaneously. 11

12 July 015 SG min 5-30 min What You Say: Let s say the verse together. What are some words you would use to describe God? (Perfect, good, forgiving, kind, loving, powerful, all-knowing, etc.) God wants us to know Him. He gave us His Word so we could learn about Him. What does our memory verse teach us about God? (He is strong and powerful; you can depend on Him; He wants to help us; etc.) When you stand for what is right, even when it s not popular, God wants you to know He is there to make you strong. You can trust God no matter what and depend on Him. 5-6 Challenge: Ask kids to use the concordance in their Bible to find a verse to match the words they used to describe God. Kids can also use a mobile device to access YouVersion or BibleGateway.com and do a keyword search to find verses. PRAY AND DISMISS What You Need: No supplies needed Ask the kids to think of something they know is true about God. Lead the kids in prayer, praising God for how great He is and asking for guidance to stand for what s right, even if it is not popular. Give each child a GodTime card. Pass out Parent Cue cards as adults arrive for pick-up. 1
