For the month of September, we re headed to Phobia Island, where anything can happen to help kids learn more about what God has to say about courage. BEFORE KIDS LEAVE THE TH GRADE, WE WANT THEM TO UNDERSTAND 3 BASIC TRUTHS: WISDOM I need to make the wise choice. FAITH I can trust God no matter what. FRIENDSHIP I should treat others the way I want to be treated. 2 STATEMENT OF FAITH ABOUT GOD God is the one and only true God, yet He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is the Creator, so everything belongs to Him and is under His control. God is holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and loving. God is all knowing and purposeful, so He s at work to bring about His will. No person, thing, or idea compares to God. ABOUT PEOPLE People are made in God s image and for His pleasure. But everybody falls short of God s intention, or ideal, for people. In other words, everyone has sinned. As a result, we are all separated from Him, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each of us. 22 GOOD-TO-KNOW TERMS SMALL GROUP LEADER One consistent leader for the same 8-10 children all year We suggest you start and end in small group so kids connect relationally with one leader and other similar-aged peers. If you have multiple small groups meeting in one room, try using circle area rugs to give each group their own spot. Offer as many of the activities as your time, space, and resources allow. 3 September Week 2013 Small Group 4- FOR LEADERS ONLY GOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN AND GOD S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD S BIG STORY In the beginning of their relationship with Jesus, the disciples might not have been the most courageous bunch you ve ever seen. Remember when the storm blew up and even the most seasoned fishermen woke Jesus in a panic (Mark 4)? But Jesus wasn t scared. He knew the power and reliability of God. Time and again Jesus showed His disciples that God would provide whenever they needed Him. As they learned to trust God, the disciples courage grew to the point that Peter and John boldly testified before the Jewish government (Acts 4) about Jesus life and resurrection. Courage is being brave enough to do when you re afraid. Peter and John were facing imprisonment or worse but they had courage to speak openly about Jesus because they knew God would give them the words they needed. We can also face potentially scary situations because we trust God will take care of us. Courage is not the absence of fear but how you respond in the face of fear. When we approach situations, we can remember that God is bigger than anything we face. If we re afraid we ll be all alone, He will be with us. If we re afraid we re not good enough, He ll provide the gifting we need. And when we can t understand what s going to happen, we can remember that God sees everything that s happening and wants what s best for us. Then we can move forward courageously. This month, let s think about how: (1) God desires a relationship with us. Being courageous demonstrates trust and builds that relationship. (2) The Bible challenges us to respond to life with courage even when what we face doesn t make sense. (3) As we trust God and show courage, we become more like Jesus who was brave enough to say and do what God asked even when He faced death on the cross. This week, we re discovering: In this week s Bible story, we remember God s promise to Abraham that he would receive the Land of Canaan. But the great city of Jericho was blocking Abraham s family from moving into Canaan (Joshua 6). They simply needed to courageously trust God and the land would be theirs. Our Bottom Line is I can be brave because I know God keeps His promises. God promises to never leave us. God promises to give us hope and a future. Sometimes it s our fear that keeps us from ever living in the promises God has given us. The monthly memory verse is: When I m afraid, I will trust in You. Psalm 6:3 NIrV. Many of God s followers will tell you their greatest adventure started when they trusted God into a decision they were afraid of. And in the end, they never regretted living courageously and believing God s promises. 3

Early Arriver Book that teaches sign language letters, or visit the American Sign Language University ( for printable pages Stick To It Colored permanent markers Wooden dowels Duct tape instead of the wooden dowels to make a duct tape bracelet (optional) : MAKE THE CONNECTION (Choose as many of these activities as you like.) * If you don t have time to do all these activities, be sure to do activity #1. Activity #3 is particularly good for children who need to move in order to stay engaged. Chocolaty Center (review the Bible story) Bibles (one for every two kids) PREPARE AHEAD OF TIME: Ice cubes with M&M s frozen inside Paper towels or wet wipes for easy clean up Reach for the Stars (memory verse activity) Bibles (one for every two kids) Construction paper Scissors Markers Foil (optional) Penny Promises (application activity / great for active learners) Two buckets Pennies Large amount of opaque (not see-through or transparent) liquid soap Paper towels Small rubber snakes or plastic bugs

Psalm 6:3, NIrV BASIC TRUTH: I can trust God no matter what. : FOCUS THE ENERGY Focus the energy on today s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Ask God to remind the kids of His promises to us. Pray the kids will be strengthened by those promises, especially when they are afraid. Thank God for following through on His promises. 1. EARLY ARRIVER IDEA What You Need: Book that teaches sign language letters, or visit the American Sign Language University ( for printable pages What You Do: Welcome students as they arrive and share the sign language book with them. See if they can learn how to spell their name using sign language, encouraging them to have patience along the way. Ask them about the last time they learned something new and how it required perseverance and courage. If you re still waiting on other students to arrive, try to figure out how to spell the words brave and courage. What You Say: There are many things you ll learn growing up that it will take a lifetime to master, such as an instrument, sport or even how to share your feelings or talk to people when you re upset. At times this can be frustrating, and we need to be brave knowing it s worth it instead of quitting or giving up. Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Personalize a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another 2. STICK TO IT What You Need: Colored permanent markers, wooden dowels Optional: Use duct tape in place of the wooden dowels to make a duct tape bracelet. What You Do: Give two different colored markers and a wooden dowel to each student. Tell them to write on it with one color, naming anything they re thankful that they didn t give up on even though it was hard. 7

8 September 2013 SG min 20-2 min 2-30 min Next, tell them to use the other marker to write down anything that they feel they shouldn t give up on even though it s difficult. For example, a difficult subject in school, trying to get along with a sibling, learning how to do a chore around the house properly, etc. What You Say: I can be brave because I know God keeps His promises. For example, one of the promises from the Ten Commandments is that if we honor our father and mother our lives will be blessed. The Bible also teaches that moms and dads need to respect their children, too. If both parents and kids trust in those commands, everyone has a better time living together. You can lead the charge in that or in other areas of your life where you know you shouldn t give up on doing the right thing, even if you have to tell yourself I can be brave even when others aren t. Today we re going to see how sometimes that takes time. Let s go to Large Group together and learn more. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 8

Psalm 6:3, NIrV BASIC TRUTH: I can trust God no matter what. : MAKE THE CONNECTION Make the connection of how today s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. * 1. CHOCOLATY CENTER (review the Bible story) What You Need: Bibles and ice cubes with M&M s inside, paper towels or wet wipes What You Do: Explain to your group that they will each receive an ice cube with an M&M inside. On your signal, they will grip the ice cube and squeeze it until it melts, revealing the M&M inside. Tell them that they re not allowed to get to the M&M in any other way except waiting for the ice to melt. You can make it a competition, or simply see how long it takes. Students can eat the M&Ms when they reach them and then clean up their hands with the wipes/paper towels. As you wait, discuss these questions: What is something in your life that you re waiting for right now? When have you needed courage not to quit something? When have you been tempted to take a shortcut you know you shouldn t to get what you want faster? When was a time you had to wait for something, but it was worth it in the end? Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Personalize a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another What You Say: Generations before Israel took possession of the land of Canaan, God promised Abraham that his descendants would become a mighty nation. It didn t happen in his son Isaac s lifetime or in his grandson Jacob s lifetime. It took a long time for it to happen, arguably because Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob s descendants often did the opposite of what God wanted them to do. Nonetheless, God was faithful to His people. They simply needed to obey and the land would be theirs. There will be times when you wonder if things are going to turn out okay. Sometimes God s promises and blessings happen right away, and other times they takes time even a long time or maybe not even in our lifetime. But remember, I can be brave because I know God keeps His promises. You can trust God, no matter what. 9

REACHING FOR THE STARS (memory verse activity) What You Need: Bible, construction paper, scissors, markers; foil (optional) What You Do: Pass out construction paper and scissors, instructing students to cut out a star. (Optional: They can also get creative by wrapping foil around it or folding foil to make a star out of that alone.) Next, have them write the memory verse on one side of the star. If they have trouble remembering it, allow them to quickly look it up in a Bible. Finally, have them each write something they sense God wants them to do in their life someday or a promise they think is true for them. If students struggle with this, guide them to some of the promises in the Bible. Some examples they can look up are below. Give different kids or pairs of kids each a passage/verse. What do they think the verse is saying to them? Is it a promise or a blessing they re just likely to experience if they follow God and His ways? What s the difference? Proverbs 3:-6 Isaiah 40:31 Ezekiel 36:26 John 14:2-3 Romans 10:9 Galatians 6:9 Philippians 4:6-7 2 Timothy 1:7 1 John 2:2 What You Say: There are many things in the Bible that God only promised to a certain group of people. But there are also several things that God promised to all people who trust in Him. It s great to set goals for your life, but it s even more important to ask God and other people who love Him to help you pray for direction and wisdom. I can be brave because I know God keeps His promises. Even if it may take some time. 3. PENNY PROMISES (application activity / great for active learners) What You Need: Pennies, large amount of opaque liquid soap, two buckets, small rubber snakes or plastic bugs, paper towels and a timer or stopwatch What You Do: Explain that this next activity will be messy, but clean at the same time Split students into two teams. Explain that they will ideally take turns dipping their arm into a bucket and pulling out a penny, one at a time. If they pull out more than one penny, their team is penalized two pennies. Also, if they pull out anything other than a penny (except for dripping soap), they lose three pennies. 10

11 September 2013 SG min 20-2 min 2-30 min Next, get everyone in two lines with one person ready to go. Place a paper towel nearby so they have a spot to place their pennies. When you say Go, give them 90 seconds to pull out as many pennies as they can, swapping out people every 10 seconds or so. Keep an eye on them to make sure they don t break a rule. Finally, clean up and let both teams keep the pennies they collected. What You Say: You may have noticed there were snakes inside the bucket. Don t worry they were rubber snakes (or plastic bugs). As you search for the blessings and treasure God has for you in your life, there will be real dangers you ll have to be aware of. Likewise, you may be tempted to grab for more than God wants you to grab. Trust in His timing and His protection. I can be brave because I know God keeps His promises. Optional th Grade Discussion Questions If you lead fifth graders, consider asking these discussion questions: Who do you know who continues to do the right thing, even though they may not always seem to be rewarded for it? (Parents, teacher, pastor) What is something you ve done in the past that you didn t get the chance to see the results of until a long time had passed? (Practiced an instrument, planted a garden, learned karate) Why do you think some people give up on being faithful or courageous? (They get tired of waiting for something tangible to happen. They start to listen to the wrong people. They become afraid.) What type of jobs have you noticed require people to be able to hang in there until they see the results later? (Farmers, athletes, builders) How does this require courage? (They have to believe things will come through like they hope. They trust someone will pay them for their hard work.) Can you name some promises you ve made to others that you ve been able to fulfill? How did it make you feel? How might it make God feel to fulfill a promise? (It felt good to do what I said I would do. God probably likes fulfilling promises.) Share about a time when someone came through on something you waited a long time for, as well as how you needed to have the courage to hang in there. PRAY AND DISMISS What You Need: Decorated wooden dowel sticks (or duct tape bracelets) from earlier What You Do: Have the students take out the wood dowels (or duct tape bracelets) they made earlier. 11

12 September 2013 SG min 20-2 min 2-30 min What You Say: These are your courage sticks (or sticky bracelets), meant to remind you that courage sticks. Look over all the things you were blessed to see through to the end and complete. Now look over all the things that you have to choose to be brave to see through some of the potential sticking points. As we pray, let s go around and each of us will share one thing off our sticks that we can pray for. Ask God to teach you how to be brave in growing in that area. God, we pray for us to trust You in helping us in these areas We ask for all of these things in Jesus name, amen! Give each child a GodTime card. Pass out Parent CUE cards as adults arrive to pick up. 12
