3 Beware of Scam Bible Story: Beware of Scam (Naaman and Elisha s servant, Gehazi) 2 Kings 5 Bottom Line: When you re not truthful, you lose trust. Memory Verse: Anyone who lives without blame walks safely. But anyone who takes a crooked path will get caught. Proverbs 10:9, NIrV Life App: Honesty Choosing to be truthful in whatever you say and do Basic Truth: I need to make the wise choice. 1. Countdown 2. Announcements 3. CG:Transition Slide then Host Opener (5 minutes) SFX: Play high-energy music as kids enter. CG: Source Code Theme Slide Host is on stage, welcoming kids as they enter. HOST: Hello, friends! It s great to see you. I ve got a question for you. Have any of you done any coding? Have you ever seen a row of computer code like this? CG: Scrolling GIF of Binary Code Sure, when you first look at it, it seems like just a bunch of numbers. But those numbers have to be the RIGHT numbers in just the right place, or whatever you re trying to code won t code. Your source code has to be 100 percent true. The same thing is true about your life. It has to be 100 percent true. That s why we re talking about honesty this month. CG: Honesty Slide Honesty is choosing to be truthful in whatever you say and do. It isn t just about the words you say, but also about the way you live. If you aren t honest, you can really hurt your friendships with other people. But if you choose to be truthful, you show others they can trust you. Since we re talking about coding, I want to see how well you all know your technology. I ve got an awesome game for you called Giant Qwerty Keyboard Smackdown! CG: Giant Qwerty Keyboard Smackdown Game Slide And you know what? YOU are the keyboard! If you sat up front, it s your lucky day! Worship Leaders enter and start handing out keys to 30 kids and Small Group Leaders in the front of the room (one letter per sheet of cardstock, plus four people holding up the space bar ). Arrange the keys so it looks like a computer keyboard from the back of the room. Note: If you have fewer people in the audience than keys (30), then give some people more than one key. (Have them hold one key in one hand and another key in the other hand.) The Worship Leaders walking around and handing you letters those aren t just any letters. They re keys on a keyboard. Once you get your letter, sit tight, because we don t want our keyboard to get scrambled! 2018 The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by Ginghamsburg Church
4 We need it for the game. We need you to sit in the order of a real keyboard just like you can see on the screen. All you have to do is hold up your key, nice and tall. Worship Leaders finish passing out keys, and then they exit. Okay now that we have our giant keyboard, we need two Small Group Leaders to volunteer for the Giant Qwerty Keyboard Smackdown! Host: Choose two Small Group Leaders (who don t already have keys) to compete in the challenge. Bring the two contestants to the space bar part of the keyboard, facing the stage. (To contestants) Okay, contestants. I ll read you a series of words. You will have to type those words using your giant keyboard. In order to type, you will have to tap the hand of the person who has the key you need to spell the word correctly like this. (High-five one of the keys.) Each of you will have a turn, and the one who types the most words in 30 seconds wins the game. Are you ready? Are you set? Then let the Smackdown begin! [Contestant s name], your first word is FIB! And... go! CG: 30-second countdown video SFX: Fun instrumental music Use the cue cards to announce the words. Make sure that the contestant has hit the right letters to spell the words. Let each contestant have a turn, keeping track of how many words each one has spelled correctly. Wow! That was totally awesome! Our winner is [Contestant s name], with [number] words. (To contestants) Thank you both for playing the Giant Qwerty Keyboard Smackdown! You can have a seat. Contestants go back to their seats. Now, if you re part of the keyboard, hold onto your letter. You ll need it for our story today. Host exits as Worship Leader enters. 4. Praise and Worship (10 Minutes) End with CG:Transition Slide 5. CG: Word Video and CG:Transition Slide 6. 5 SETTING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Wow, that keyboard game sure seemed like a lot of fun! [Host s name] is right we ll use those keys for today s story too. Our story comes from the book of 2 Kings (hold up Bible), during the time of Elisha the prophet, when the nations of Israel and Aram were at war. Soldiers from Aram even captured Israelites and took them back to Aram to work for them. One of these Israelites was a young girl. She went to work for the wife of a man named Naaman, who was the leader of Aram s army. This is where our story gets really interesting. NAAMAN HAS LEPROSY STORYTELLER: Naaman was a brave soldier, and he had been very successful in battle. But he had a problem. He had a terrible skin disease called leprosy. Naaman was very wealthy and very important, but there was nothing he could do to cure his disease. Remember the young Israelite girl who served Naaman s wife? She had an idea about how Naaman could be healed. Let s see if you can guess what she told Naaman to do. You ve got three options A, B, or C. Stand up if I call your letter, okay? Prompt the A, B, and C kids in the keyboard to stand up when you call on them. What do you think the young girl did? A. She told him to eat only healthy foods so he could get better. B. She told him to play with a fidget spinner to cure his leprosy. C. She told him to go talk to the prophet Elisha to cure his leprosy. Do you think it was A, B, or C? (Pause for response.) It was C. She told him to go talk to the prophet Elisha. Walk over to the letter C kid and give her a high-five. (To the letter C kid) Thanks! You can have a seat. (To audience) This young girl had heard all about Elisha. He was well known throughout all of Israel because of the miracles he did and because he shared God s messages. She knew that Elisha could help Naaman get better. But Naaman didn t go directly to Elisha. First he went to his leader, the King of Aram, to see if he could leave. The King of Aram gave him permission and sent him with a letter to the King of Israel, asking the King of Israel if he could help heal Naaman s skin disease. So Naaman went to the King of Israel with a bunch of fancy gifts and treasures and the letter from his country s king. Let s just say that the King of Israel wasn t happy. He thought it was some kind of trick and that Aram was plotting to attack him. How was he going to heal anybody? But Elisha somehow heard about this visitor from Aram and sent a messenger probably Gehazi to the king with a message: Tell the man to come to me (2 Kings 5:8 NIrV). So Namaan went to see Elisha. When he got to where Elisha was staying, it wasn t what he expected. He expected to meet with Elisha, but a messenger, probably Gehazi again, came out instead. Naaman was a little annoyed. After all, someone as important as he was should be able to meet with an important prophet not just his servant. NAAMAN STORMS OFF TO THE JORDAN RIVER STORYTELLER: But the servant told him that Elisha had sent him out with a message. Can you guess what Elisha s message was? This time I need the D, E, and F keys. Remember, stand up if I call your letter The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by Ginghamsburg Church
6 Prompt the D, E, and F kids in the keyboard to stand up when you call on them. What do you think Gehazi said to Naaman? D. Naaman should offer a sacrifice to the Lord. E. Naaman should go to Chuck E. Cheese and win enough tickets to win a cure. F. Naaman should go wash in the Jordan River seven times. That s a tough one! What do you think? Let s see what it says in the Bible. Open the Bible to 2 Kings 5:10 and read. The messenger said, Go! Wash yourself in the Jordan River seven times. Then your skin will be healed. You will be pure and clean again (NIrV). Wow. So our answer is F. Walk over to the letter F kid and give him a high-five. (To the letter F kid) Thanks! You can have a seat. Elisha s message to this important man, Naaman, was that he should go wash off in the Jordan River seven times. That just didn t make sense to Naaman. He left pretty angry. But his servants convinced him to try it. He went to the Jordan River and he washed off seven times. And you know what? He was healed of his leprosy! Let s just say that turned Naaman s frown upside down! He was thrilled. God had healed him, just as Elisha said He would. So Naaman returned to Elisha and offered him a bunch of treasure to thank him for helping him. Gehazi and Elisha couldn t believe how much treasure he was offering them. GEHAZI LIES FOR TREASURE STORYTELLER: Now, what do you think Elisha did about it? This time, I need the X, Y, and Z keys. Prompt the X, Y, and Z kids in the keyboard to stand up when you call on them. Did Elisha... X. Count the money like Mr. Krabs. Y. Refuse to take the treasure. Z. Take the treasure and use it to feed the poor. The answer is... Y! Elisha chose to refuse the treasure. (To the letter Y kid) Thanks! You can have a seat. Walk over to the letter Y kid and give her a high-five. Elisha told Naaman that he served God and that it was God who had healed Naaman. Elisha wouldn t take any payment for it. And so Naaman went on his way. But Gehazi, the servant, was NOT pleased. He thought about all that money Naaman had offered. Listen to what he said to himself. Open the Bible to 2 Kings 5:20 and read. My master was too easy on Naaman... He should have accepted the gift Naaman brought. I m going to run after him. I m going to get something from him (NIrV) The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. Adapted by Ginghamsburg Church
7 Gehazi ran after Naaman, and when he caught up with him, he LIED and said that Elisha had changed his mind. He said that some young prophets had come to visit, and that Elisha needed the money to provide for them. So Naaman handed over the treasure to Gehazi. And Gehazi quickly took it home and hid it away for himself in Elisha s house. WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: BUT he didn t get away with it. Elisha knew what Gehazi did. When Elisha asked Gehazi where he had been, Gehazi lied again and told Elisha that he never left home. But Elisha knew the truth. He knew Gehazi had lied to get treasure for himself. And because he lied, there had to be a consequence. Elisha told Gehazi that HE would have Naaman s skin disease all because he lied. And that leads us to today s Bottom Line. CG: Bottom Line Slide [Bottom Line] When you re not truthful, you lose trust. Remember, you don t want to lose trust with others like Gehazi did. You want to be truthful. You want other people to know they can trust you. God wants us to [Basic Truth] treat others the way we want to be treated. And that means being truthful in what we say and do. When you tell the truth, people can trust you. But [Bottom Line] when you re NOT truthful, you lose trust. Gehazi wasn t truthful. He chose to lie because he thought that his way was better, but he got caught. Elisha probably had a hard time trusting Gehazi from that point on. It s kind of like when you tell a friend that you can keep a secret, but then you tell that secret to other people at school. That friend is probably not going to trust you again with a secret. But being truthful isn t just about telling the truth. It s about doing what you say you ll do. So if you tell your mom that you ll clean your room before dinner, you need to make sure you do it. If you don t, you ll lose trust with your mom. Here s the one thing to remember today. [Bottom Line] When you re not truthful, you lose trust. Everyone messes up sometimes. But you can always ask God to help you be honest and to help you build trust with your friends and family. We ve got a great memory verse this month. It ll help you remember how important it is to be honest. Let s read it together. CG: Memory Verse Slide KIDS and HOST: Anyone who lives without blame walks safely. But anyone who takes a crooked path will get caught, Proverbs 10:9 (NIrV). HOST: Do you think you can memorize it? I bet you can!
