Keep the bucket close by, along with the Nerf crossbow and darts, but hidden out of sight. 2 Bible Story Outline Week 2 Give Love (Meet People s Needs) 1 Peter 4:10-11 SETTING UP THE STORY God has a cool, creative way that He wants us to serve and put others first Peter wrote about that in 1 Peter He was writing to a group of new Christians who were having a rough time 1 Peter 4:10-11 GIFTS FOR ALL 1 Peter 4:10 every person who has put their faith in Jesus has a gift Gifts: calculator, grocery bag, two umbrellas GIFTS IN ACTION Really tough math question; kid with calculator solves it [Kid] helped [kid] figure out something tough That s what happens when God gives you the gift of knowledge If God has given you the gift of knowledge, and you believe in Him, then His Spirit can help you use your gift of knowledge to serve others MORE GIFTS IN ACTION Kid tries to catch sports balls; kid with grocery bag helps hold them [Kid] helped [kid] hold it all together Maybe God has given you the ability to be a good friend; when you believe in God, His Spirit can help you use that gift to serve others Kid dodges darts from Leader; kid with umbrellas uses them as shields from darts If you have that gift, God s Spirit can help you serve others by protecting them WRAPPING UP THE STORY Remember what Peter said: 1 Peter 4:10a God made each of us with gifts and abilities that we can use to serve others When we believe in Him, His Spirit works through us and gives us the strength we need to lend a helping hand BL: Look for ways to serve others. Host enters, wearing an apron, and bopping to the music. He s holding a small notepad and a pencil, as if he s going to take an order or two at a diner. Optional CG (Media Package): Countdown Video Optional CG (Media Package): Theme Video HOST: Well, now, it s good to see you back at the [your environment s name] Diner! If this is your first time here, don t worry, we ve got you covered. We re here to serve any hors d oeuvres, sling pot hash, or whip up some grilled squirrel mash! Around here, serving is what we do! Ring the desk call bell. CG: Service Slide Optional CG (Media Package): Life App Video Service is lending a hand to help someone else. Optional CG (Media Package): Theme TransBack Video Actually, it might even be a great idea to lend TWO hands. People all over this planet need help everywhere, every day. And you can do something about it. You can jump in and serve! Hold up the notepad and the pencil. If you want to be a server here at the [your environment s name] Diner, you need a notepad check! (Hold up the notepad.) A pencil with a good point on it check! (Hold up the pencil.) And a great memory. (Scribble on the pad.) Two eggs over easy, side of bacon, chocolate chip waffles, coffee, and OJ check! After all, you get all kinds of orders from all kinds of people. If you want to serve them what they need, you need to listen AND remember. Anyone in here think they have a pretty good memory? Good, because it s time to play Order Up! CG: Order Up! Slide Bring up two older kids to play. Two servers in training, right here. Let s put them to the test, shall we? They ll be taking orders from YOU (point to the audience) one at a time. 4 I ll be writing your orders on my pad (hold up pad), but [contestants names] will have to try to remember them. They ll take turns trying to repeat back ALL of the orders so far. For example... Point to a kid in the audience. Flip to a new page in the notepad and write the kid s order down. (Responding to what the kid says) We ve got a [cheeseburger]. Order up! Point to Contestant One. (To Contestant One) [Contestant One s name], you ll say: Cheeseburger. Order up! Then we ll add to the order. We ve got [onion rings]. Order up! Ring the desk call bell. Point to another kid in the audience. Write the kid s order on your notepad. Point to Contestant Two. (To Contestant Two) [Contestant Two s name], you ll say: Cheeseburger and onion rings. Order up! Ring the desk call bell. (To both contestants) We ll keep adding and adding to the order until, eventually, one of you won t be able to remember all of it. If that happens and the other server CAN remember it, then they win! Move into the middle of the room. Let s try it! (To audience) When I point to you, shout out one item you d like to order, and it can be ANYTHING. Gummy bears, a T-bone steak, cottage cheese, pineapple, anything. Let s start! Take orders from the audience, one at a time. Shout out the new item each time. Have the two contestants alternate back and forth, repeating the entire order IN order. Keep going until one contestant can t remember the whole order. When that happens, let the other contestant try to repeat it back for the win. Time permitting, you can try this with another two volunteers, or have three volunteers at a time. When you re done, cheer for the contestants and dismiss them to their seats. (To contestants) Wow! You two are FANTASTIC listeners! You remembered a lot! That could come in handy when you serve people not just when you serve them food. Go ahead and stand up, everyone, because it s time for us to sing and worship God together, and then we ll serve up a tasty Bible story! Worship Leaders enter as Host exits. 4. 5 SETTING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Hey, everyone! We ve been talking about why it s important to serve. We know God wants us to serve. As you re about to see, God has a really cool, really creative way that He wants us to serve and put others first. A man named Peter wrote about that in a letter that we can find in the Bible (hold up Bible), called 1 Peter. Peter was writing to a group of new Christians who were having a bit of a rough time. Check it out. Open the Bible to 1 Peter 4:10-11 (NIrV) and read. God s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully. If anyone speaks, they should do it as one speaking God s words. If anyone serves, they should do it with the strength God provides. Then in all things God will be praised through Jesus Christ. Glory and power belong to him for ever and ever. Amen. GIFTS FOR ALL STORYTELLER: Sometimes, when I read the Bible, I need to take a closer look to understand what it really means. Let s do that together. I ll need help from a few of you to act some things out. Are you ready for that? Sweet! Let s look again at that first part. CG: 1 Peter 4:10 Slide Open the Bible to 1 Peter 4:10 (NIrV) and read. God s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully. Every person who has put their faith in Jesus has a gift! Gifts for everyone! But wait what kind of gifts are we talking about? And how can we use them to serve others? (To the kid) A gift for you! Open it up and let s see what it is. Hand the first gift bag to an older kid in the audience. The kid pulls out the calculator. It s a calculator! Isn t it everything you ve ever wanted? Here s another gift! Hand the second gift bag to another kid. Instruct him to pull out the brown paper grocery bag. (To the kid) What? Another bag? That s a superb gift! Amazing! I ve got one more here. (To the kid) Whoa, double prizes! Congratulations! Hand the third gift bag to a kid. Instruct her pull out the two small umbrellas. All right. I know what all of you are probably thinking. Those are some, uh, interesting gifts. And how, exactly, am I supposed to use a calculator or a grocery bag or an umbrella to serve someone? Well, let s find out. GIFTS IN ACTION STORYTELLER: Who thinks they can answer a really tough math question? Choose an older kid. (We ll call him Kid One.) All right, [Kid One s name]. 6 CG: Math Question Slide What is 5 x 6 x 7 x 8 x 9 x 10 x 11? Wait a few seconds. Ummmm... that s a tough one. If only someone in here had an easy way to solve the problem. Look around the room, and end up standing next to the kid with the calculator (who we ll call Kid Two). Let her calculate the answer on the calculator. Be ready to help if needed. Don t worry! [Kid Two] has got you covered. The answer is... (prompt Kid Two to answer.) CG: Math Answer Slide Yes! The answer is 1,663,200. The point isn t that God gave [Kid Two s name] a calculator. The point is that [Kid Two s name] helped [Kid One s name] figure out something tough. That s what happens when God gives you the gift of knowledge, and I m not just talking about math. When you have the gift of knowledge, you have this God-given ability to speak knowledge into a given situation. Maybe you have some wisdom from God that you can use to help someone figure out something that s scary or confusing. Maybe you ve been through what they re going through, and you can help them understand it. If God has given you the gift of knowledge, and you believe in Him, then His Spirit can help you use your gift of knowledge to serve others. Get the calculator back from Kid Two before moving on. MORE GIFTS IN ACTION STORYTELLER: Let s look at another example. I need another volunteer who likes sports someone who can catch a ball or two! Choose another older kid. (We ll call her Kid Three.) [Kid Three s name], I ll toss you some objects, and we ll see if you can catch them all without dropping any. Ready? Let s try it! Gently toss the following objects to Kid Three: ten golf balls, ten tennis balls, ten Wiffle balls, and a football. She ll try to hold them all but won t be able to. Good try, [Kid Three s name]. If only there were someone in here with a gift who could help you. Look around the room, and end up standing next to the kid with the paper grocery bag (who we ll call Kid Four). Let s try this again, shall we? This time, [Kid Three s name], you can toss each ball into [Kid Four s name] s bag when you catch it. Toss the objects to Kid Three again. This time, Kid Four is there with the bag to help her. Awesome! That was a lot more successful. So do you think [Kid Four s name] s real gift was a paper bag? Not exactly. His gift was that he was able to help [Kid Three s name] hold it all together. Maybe that s a gift God has given you. Maybe you can help someone else by sharing the load when life gets a little overwhelming. You can offer them a kind word, a listening ear, or maybe just a fist bump to say, I ve got your back, man. (Nod to the two kids to give each other a fist bump.) Maybe God has given you the ability to be a good friend like that. When you believe in God, His Spirit can help you use that gift to serve others. Get the bag back from Kid Four before moving on. All right. I ve got one more example for you. This time, I ll need a volunteer who s quick, speedy, has the reflexes of a mongoose. Choose another older kid. (We ll call him Kid Five.) (To Kid Five) I ll also need your Small Group Leader to use this! Hand the Nerf crossbow to the Leader. [Kid Five s name], let s see how speedy you are! 7 Nerf darts and you ll see if you can dodge them. Ready? GO! Let the Leader launch some darts at Kid Five at close range. (If the Leader can t actually hit the kid, just let that be a funny moment.) Hmmmm. That s tough. [Kid Five s name], if only someone out there had something that could protect you from harm. Look around the room, and end up standing next to the kid with the two umbrellas (who we ll call Kid Six). Help her open both umbrellas and hand one to Kid Five. Don t worry, [Kid Five s name]. [Kid Six s name] is here for you now! Let s try again. Ready? GO! Let the Leader launch some darts at the two kids as they hide behind the umbrellas. Amazing! [Kid Six s name], you might have THOUGHT your gift was a couple of umbrellas. Actually, your real gift was that you were able to protect someone else from harm. That could be a gift from God, too. You might be someone who stands up for others when they re getting made fun of. You might be someone who protects people who can t protect themselves. If you have that gift, God s Spirit can help you serve others by protecting them. Get Kid Six and the Leader to help you pick up the Nerf darts. Collect the crossbow, darts, and umbrellas before moving on. Go back up on stage to wrap up the story. WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Remember what Peter said in his letter. CG: 1 Peter 4:10 Slide Open the Bible to 1 Peter 4:10 (NIrV) and read. God s gifts of grace come in many forms. Each of you has received a gift in order to serve others. You should use it faithfully. God made each of us with gifts and abilities that we can use to serve others. When we believe in Him, His Spirit works through us and gives us the strength we need to lend a helping hand. Our job is simple. CG: Bottom Line Slide We need to [Bottom Line] look for ways to serve others. Like Peter said, use the gifts that God has given you. Pay attention. Be a listener. Be an encourager. Don t just think about what YOU need. Be on the lookout to see what OTHERS need, and then use your gifts to serve You probably don t have to look very far, either. I m guessing there are ways to serve right in your own house. Is your little brother getting frustrated trying to write a cursive Z? You can use your gifts of teaching and patience and show him the right way. Are your parents a little on edge because their jobs were super hard this week? Use your gifts of service and encouragement and clean the kitchen when they re not looking. [Bottom Line] Look for ways to serve others. Lend a hand to help someone else. [Basic Truth] Treat others the way you want to be treated. God will give you the gifts and the strength to do it! You can jump up on your feet now, because it s time to head back to Small Group and talk some more about how you can use your gifts to serve. See you later!
