Curriculum Materials for 4 th and 5 th Grades CREATE THE ENVIRONMENT: GET MESSY In February, we re encouraging kids to get messy, because relational peace is worth the risk. Most kids love to get messy, so create a HUGE messy art piece backdrop for your focal wall. This is a fun, easy project for you or for a creative family or Small Group in your church. Head to your local hardware store to find an inexpensive, canvas tarp. At the same store, shoot over to the paint section and find their shelves full of paint cans that were mis-tints and returns. (Mis-tints are cans of paint colors that weren t mixed quite right.) Usually you can find some great colors for $5 or less. BEFORE KIDS LEAVE THE 5TH GRADE, WE WANT THEM TO UNDERSTAND 3 BASIC TRUTHS: WISDOM I need to make the wise choice. FAITH I can trust God no matter what. FRIENDSHIP I should treat others the way I want to be treated. 2 STATEMENT OF FAITH ABOUT GOD God is the one and only true God, yet He exists in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. God is the Creator, so everything belongs to Him and is under His control. God is holy, so He is righteous, majestic, and loving. God is all knowing and purposeful, so He s at work to bring about His will. No person, thing, or idea compares to God. ABOUT PEOPLE People are made in God s image and for His pleasure. But everybody falls short of God s intention, or ideal, for people. In other words, everyone has sinned. As a result, we are all separated from Him, even though He wants an intimate relationship with each of us. 252 GOOD-TO-KNOW TERMS SMALL GROUP LEADER One consistent leader for the same 8-0 children all year We suggest you start and end in small group so kids connect relationally with one leader and other similar-aged peers. If you have multiple small groups meeting in one room, try using circle area rugs to give each group their own spot. Offer as many of the activities as your time, space, and resources allow. ABOUT THE BIBLE God reveals Himself to us through the Bible, and it is 00% accurate, reliable, and authoritative. ABOUT SALVATION That s why Jesus God s Son came and lived on this earth, died, and rose again. God offers His free gift of salvation to all who believe in Jesus and accept Him as Savior the only way to be forgiven and reconciled to God. Anyone who accepts this gift is adopted as a son or daughter into God s family and will live with Him forever in heaven. Scripture marked NIV is taken from the Holy Bible, NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION. 3 February Week 203 Small Group 4-5 FOR LEADERS ONLY GOD VIEW: THE CONNECTION BETWEEN AND GOD S CHARACTER, AS SHOWN THROUGH GOD S BIG STORY When sin entered God s magnificent paradise, our relationship with Him was broken. God s love for us was so great that He was willing to sacrifice to restore the relationship. God proved He cared about peace when He sent His Son to pay for our sins. Peace is part of God s character. And He wants us to reflect peace in our relationships with others. Peace is proving you care more about each other than about winning an Peace is more than just not fighting and saying the right things to keep people happy. Peace is living in a way that shows you care more about others than about being right. It s about building strong relationships through mutual trust. A person who lacks peace may have an argumentative spirit or feel like they always need the final word. It often leads to broken relationships with others. When our relationships are broken, we often find ourselves avoiding other people. We know when we need to work at a relationship, but it s easier to ignore what s going on and sweep it under the rug. Working at the relationship is messy. It will cost us something. It will take time. It will take swallowing our pride. It will take walking away from the chance to prove we re right. But peace is worth the effort. This month, let s think about how: () God demonstrated peace by sending Jesus to pay the price for our sin, which allowed the chance for our relationship with Him to be restored. (2) The Bible challenges us to reflect this kind of peace by working towards reconciliation with others. (3) As we show peace in our own lives, we build our relationships on trust, which in turn makes achieving peace easier during those times when we mess up. This week, we re discovering: In this week s Bible story, Isaac settles in his father s land and reopens some wells (Genesis 26:6-22, 26-3). When his new neighbors argue with him, he simply moves to a new place and digs new wells. Isaac had every right to fight for those wells, but he chose peace instead. Our Bottom Line is: prove you care about others by walking away from a fight. Sometimes creating peace with someone means walking away even if we re not wrong. Often it takes a stronger person to have the selfcontrol to walk away. The monthly memory verse is So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build each other up. Romans 4:9, NIrV Living in peace can be hard work. But when we fight for our relationships instead of fighting to be right, we start to reflect the character of God to those around us. 3

February 203 SG min BIBLE STORY: WELL, WELL, WELL Genesis 26:6-22, 26-3 BOTTOM LINE: Prove you care about others by walking away from a fight. : FOCUS THE ENERGY Focus the energy on today s Bible story in a Small Group setting with an engaging discussion question and an interactive opening activity. Before kids arrive, pray for each regular attendee by name. Pray for those who might visit your group for the first time. Pray that God would give each kid the wisdom to know when walking away is the most peaceful thing to do. And pray that He would give them the courage to do it. Thank God for giving each of us His peace and allowing us to reflect it to others. MEMORY VERSE: So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build each other up. Romans 4:9, NIrV BASIC TRUTH: I can trust God no matter what.. EARLY ARRIVER IDEA What You Need: an offering container Ask kids to talk about things that are hard for them to walk away from, such as a TV show that isn t over, a favorite food, an argument when they know they re right, a video game, junk food, and so on. Invite kids to put their offerings into the container. 2. WALK AWAY What You Need: no supplies needed Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Personalize a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another Pair kids up. Instruct one partner to choose an object in the room but not tell what it is. As the other partner begins to walk around and look for the object, the only direction his partner can give is to say, Walk away! when his partner is moving in the wrong direction. What You Say: We shouldn t walk away from certain things, such as a job that needs to be done or a situation where we can help. And it goes without saying that I d never walk away from [name your favorite food or dessert]. However, there ARE times when walking away is the best thing we can do, even if it s hard. Let s go to Large Group and find out when walking away is a good thing and when a messy situation might just be worth it in the end. Lead your group to the Large Group area. 7

February 203 SG min BIBLE STORY: WELL, WELL, WELL Genesis 26:6-22, 26-3 BOTTOM LINE: Prove you care about others by walking away from a fight. MEMORY VERSE: So let us do all we can to live in peace. And let us work hard to build each other up. Romans 4:9, NIrV BASIC TRUTH: I can trust God no matter what. : MAKE THE CONNECTION Make the connection of how today s Bible story applies to real life experiences through interactive activities and discussion questions. *. KEEP STACKING (application activity / review the Bible story / great for boys) What You Need: cups, paper, pens Give kids paper and pens. Ask them to each write a question and answer about something they remember from the Bible lesson. Collect the papers then form two equal teams. Give each team member a foam cup. Explain that you re going to ask the review questions the kids wrote. In order for their team to be able to answer the question and earn a point, they must first successfully stack all of their cups in something resembling a pyramid. If the cups fall during the stacking process, they have to start over. Each time a question is asked, the first team with all cups stacked gets to answer the question. Give a point for being the first to have cups stacked and another point for answering the question correctly. A wrong answer can be passed to the other team for a point if that team is able to answer correctly. After each round, the teams must knock down their pyramids in order to start over before the next question is asked. Apply go and do Impress impress this upon their minds Personalize a personal story from the heart Recycle important things to say over and over Transition making a transition from one leader to another In addition to the questions kids wrote, add your own or some of the following to make sure the lesson is reviewed completely. What is today s Bottom Line? (Prove you care about others by walking away from a fight.) What was the name of the Philistine king? (Abimelech) What was one of the first things Isaac and his people had to do after they moved to a new location? (Dig a well; find water) What s a peace treaty? (An agreement not to fight) What did Isaac s people and the Philistines do after they signed the peace treaty? (Had a big feast) In what book of the Bible is today s lesson found? (Genesis) Spell Abimelech. 8

February 203 SG min What You Say: Knowing you had the right answer to a review question but not being able to stack cups fast enough may have been frustrating for your team. Frustration I m sure Isaac felt plenty of it. Imagine that just when you get all your people settled in the desert where there s enough water to go around, you have to pack up all your stuff and move on. Isaac could ve turned a WELL into a WAR. But, instead of putting his energy into fighting, he chose to put it into keeping the peace. It was hard work, and it was messy, but it was worth it. It took guts to prove that he cared more about others than about winning an argument about a hole in the ground. Minus the well-digging part and a bunch of big, hairy Philistines, it s the same for us today. Peace takes courage. It gets frustrating at times, especially when you know you re RIGHT and the other person is WRONG. (Share a frustrating situation you ve faced in which you felt that you were 00 percent right and the other person was wrong. How did you react? Was it peaceful or did it end in a war? Tell the kids what you learned through that experience that can help them be challenged to walk away from a fight in order to keep peace.) Sometimes creating peace with someone means walking away and feeling frustrated. You can ask God to help you prove you care about others by walking away from a fight. 2. AND PEPPER (application activity) What You Need: pepper shaker, shallow bowls of water, liquid dish soap Instruct kids to choose a partner and then sit next to each other in the group s circle. Give partners one bowl of water to share. Pass the peppershaker around the circle, and tell the kids sprinkle pepper into the bowl if they have ever been in an argument or fought with someone over who was right and who was wrong. Let a few kids share their stories (without mentioning any names) and then invite the group to look back on the situation and try to identify the point at which it started to turn into a fight. Optional 5th Grade Discussion Questions If you lead fifth graders, consider asking these discussion questions: What signals can you look for to help you know when a situation is getting out of hand and that it s time to walk away from it in order to avoid a fight? (An angry look; unkind words or tone of voice; a push or shove; voices start to get louder) How does walking away from an argument show that you care about others? Who can you go to for help when you can t seem to settle an argument peacefully? Make sure there s a very visible layer of pepper in each bowl. Add more if needed. Ask kids to look at the pepper in their bowls and imagine that it represents a messy situation on the verge of turning into a fight if someone doesn t make a step toward peace. Refer to examples they shared earlier or suggest a scenario in which two people both feel they re 00 percent right or when someone is being bullied and treated unfairly as Isaac was, and so on. 9

February 203 SG min Next, have both partners each place one finger into the center of the bowl and touch the bottom to represent two people in the middle of a disagreement. Ask them to take a look at the mess of pepper around their fingers. What did it do? (Probably not much of anything.) Have one partner put a drop of dish soap on the tip of his finger then poke it back into the center of the bowl. What did the pepper do? (It should have immediately scattered to the edge of the bowl.) Invite the kids to brainstorm some analogies that could come from the Peace and Pepper experiment. Ask them what they think the soap represents. How is it an example of peace? What You Say: In that experiment, the pepper particles diffused or scattered as soon as the soap touched the water. Caring enough about others to walk away from a fight is the soap that can put an end to an argument and bring peace. When you feel you re headed into a fight, here s how to diffuse the situation prove you care about others by walking away from a fight. When you choose not to argue with someone, it makes it really hard for the other person to keep fighting with you. When you feel like fighting, it s time to pray. Involve God in the situation and ask Him to help you bring peace. When God steps in, His Spirit goes to work. He ll help you put you desire to be right aside. He ll help you talk things through. He ll help you show the other person that you really care about them and that they re more important to you than what you re arguing about. 3. ALL YOU CAN DO (memory verse activity) What You Need: Bibles, cups, pens or markers Ask kids to look up Romans 4:9. For those who need help finding the verse, use the following Navigation Tip: Our verse is from the book of Romans. Ask kids to tell you whether that s in the Old Testament or the New Testament. (New) So we know it s toward the back of the Bible. It s the first of the four Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John) and Acts. When they find Romans, explain that the big numbers on the page are the chapter numbers. Tell them to find chapter 4. Explain that the small numbers are verse numbers. Tell them to them find verse 9 in chapter 4. Ask kids what they think it means to do all we can to live in peace. What does it look like to work hard to build each other up? Let kids share how knowing Romans 4:9 would be helpful when they need to walk away from a fight. Ask each of the kids to write the words of Romans 4:9 around the outside of a cup. Then help kids form two equal teams. Instruct one team to set their cups right side up around the room. Have the other team turn their cups upside 0

February 203 SG min down around the room. Explain that at your signal, teams will try to turn their opponent s cups over while also setting their own back to the original position if overturned. Stop the game every 5 seconds. The team with the most cups in the original position gets a point. Practice the verse by reciting it after each round. What You Say: A game like this could go on forever, but if your team stopped trying, you d lose. It s like that with peace, too. Living in peace with others is an ongoing thing. It s something you keep working at all the time. If you don t, you ll lose out on some really great relationships. It ll take hard work; Romans 4:9 says so. But it s worth the effort, because it s what God wants you to do. You might have to walk away from an argument, give up your rights, or let go of having your way in order to show someone they re more important to you than winning an This week, instead of lashing out at someone or putting them in their place, ask God to help you set your rights aside and do the hard thing; prove you care about others by walking away from a fight. PRAY AND DISMISS What You Need: paper, pens Give kids paper and pens. Ask them to write a prayer that asks for God s help to live out today s Bottom Line. Tell them to be sure to include at least one word that begins with each of the letters in the word. When finished, ask kids to exchange papers. Then they should pray silently using the written prayer as a guide. Help kids as needed to write simple prayers similar to the following: Dear God, Please help me Every day to be A peacemaker. Help me show that I Care more about others than Even myself by walking away from a fight or an In Jesus name, amen. What You Say: We took a look at a true peacemaker today: Isaac. He was willing to walk away from a fight to keep peace for his people. Like Isaac, you can trust God to take care of you and help you choose peace over your rights. You can do it! Even if it gets messy and uncomfortable. With God on your side, you can do the hard thing. You can prove you care about others by walking away from a fight. Give each child a GodTime card. Pass out Parent CUE cards as adults arrive to pick up.
