If you ve ever helped anyone in any way, OR if anyone has ever helped you, you re a cooperation expert! Life is just better when you cooperate. It s not always fun when you try and get everything done by yourself. Any job can be so much easier when you have friends to share the load. "Today, I want to see if you can help each other with a jam session. Now, before you think we re going to have a strawberry jam-making session though that would be delicious a jam session is when a bunch of musicians get together and play music. Let s see if you can work together with your small group to build a better beat! Walk over to the prop bin. I ve got all kinds of random objects in this bin. I ll hand one object to each small group. Your job is to figure out, as a group, how to play that object. Like this! Pull out one of the objects and drum with it somehow. We ll give you a beat and you can drum along. Make sure to involve everyone in your group. You can either take turns with your object or figure out how you can all play it together. I ll listen to you and choose 2018 The rethink Group, Inc. Let s get started. Here are your instruments. Talk for a minute about how you re going to make your beat. Hand one object to each group. Now I ll listen to you and choose four groups to move on to the next round. Let the battle begin! SFX: Fun beat song (suggestion: You Can t Stop Me by Andy Mineo) All right round two! Here are some new instruments. Let s see what you can do! Ready? Go! SFX: Fun beat song (suggestion: One Sixteen by Trip Lee) As the song plays, walk from group to group to listen to their beats. Choose four groups to move on to the next round (hold up the Leader s arm to choose each group). Give a new object to each group. As the song plays, walk from group to group to listen to their beats. Choose two groups to move on to the grand finale (hold up the Leader s arm to choose each group). We ve got two groups left. (To the two groups) Come up on stage for our finale, and let s get you some new instruments too! This is for the championship! Let s go! Bring the two remaining groups on stage. Give a new object to each group. SFX: Fun beat song (suggestion: Thunder by Imagine Dragons) As the song plays, listen and react to the two groups. After a while, choose one winning group by holding up the Leader s arm. That was great! Way to go, everyone. Dismiss the two groups to their seats. Let s keep the music going. 5 CG: Blank Bottom Line Slide SETTING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Hey, everybody! [Host s name], [Worship Leader s name], and I are tag-teaming our story today. HOST: Right. We re cooperating! STORYTELLER: Exactly. We re working together to do more than we can do alone. HOST: (To Storyteller) What did you need us to do again? STORYTELLER: Can you put this together, please? HOST: Okay, sure! Hand the tent bag to the Host and Worship Leader. (Note: If you don t have a tent, the Host and Worship Leader can make a fort out of pillows and blankets or boxes. Host and Worship Leader open the bag and begin assembling the tent while making sure to look at the instructions a few times along the way. They shouldn t draw attention or act silly, because the kids attention should stay on Storyteller. STORYTELLER: [Host s name] and [Worship Leader s name] are helping me out by putting up this tent. (Show the picture on the tent bag, if there is one.) Today s story isn t about a camping tent like this one, but it IS about a group of people who cooperated to build a very different, very important kind of tent. We re talking about God s people, the Israelites. They had spent hundreds of years as slaves in Egypt, but then God set them free! He rescued them and led them through the desert. God knew that His people would need guidelines about how to live special laws that would keep them safe and help them love God and love others. BUILDING INSTRUCTIONS STORYTELLER: God also gave Moses some instructions about something that He wanted them to build. He wanted them to build a very special tent called the Tabernacle. It would look something like this. CG: Tabernacle Illustration (leave up) The Tabernacle wasn t a tent for them to sleep in. It was a place for them to meet together, worship God, and come close to Him. Kind of like how we all come together to worship God in our church today. God told Moses that He wanted the people to bring all the different materials to build this special tent things like gold, silver, and bronze; blue, purple, and bright red yarn and fabric; animal skins; wood; olive oil; stones and jewels. He told Moses... Open the Bible to Exodus 25:8-9 (NIrV) and read. Have them make a sacred tent for me. I will live among them. Make the holy tent and everything that belongs to it. Make them exactly like the pattern I will show you." You see, God had some very detailed instructions for how He wanted the people to build the Tabernacle. (Point to Host and Worship Leader) [Host s name] and [Worship Leader s name] would have a pretty tough time setting up this tent if they didn t look at the instructions, right? It was the same way with God s people. God knew what it would take for them to build the Tabernacle. It would take all of them working together. It would take cooperation The rethink Group, Inc. 6 BEZALEL AND OHOLIAB STORYTELLER: As you can tell, everyone would have an important job to do from the builders to the priests to the people who made clothes for the priests. God had a part for each person to play. He knew what each person was good at and how they could use their skills together to build something great. For example, there was a guy named Bezalel. Here s what God said about him. Open the Bible to Exodus 31:2-5 (NIrV) and read. I have chosen Bezalel, the son of Uri.... I have filled him with the Spirit of God. I have filled Bezalel with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skill. He can make beautiful patterns in gold, silver and bronze. He can cut and set stones. He can work with wood. In fact, he can work in all kinds of crafts. Raise your hand if you like to do art projects. (Pause for response.) Yeah! That s what Bezalel was like, too. God knew that about him because He had made him that way. He knew Bezalel would be the perfect person to work on the detailed designs of the Tabernacle. God also had a special assignment for another guy named Oholiab. He said that He wanted Oholiab to help Bezalel, so Oholiab must have been really crafty too. Since He had made them all, God knew what each person could do well. He knew that it would take everyone bringing their very best to make the Tabernacle what it needed to be. Once Moses had all the instructions from God about what the people needed to do, he came down from the mountain. He called the people together and told them about the Tabernacle they would get to build together. Note: At this point, Host and Worship Leader should be close to finishing the tent. BUILDING THE TABERNACLE STORYTELLER: Just like God had planned, Moses asked the people to bring their offerings and gifts that would be used to make the Tabernacle. Sure enough, they brought their gold, silver, and bronze; blue, purple, and bright red yarn and fabric; animal skins; wood; olive oil; stones and jewels. In fact, they gave so much that Moses had to tell them to stop! And just like God planned, Moses put Bezalel and Oholiab in charge of the woodcarving and the sewing and the building. The two of them were able to teach others to help them, too. Together, they made the detailed carvings, the patterns, the furniture, and the walls just like God wanted them to. Turn toward the tent. Our friends here have built a pretty fantastic tent, don t you think? I mean, it s not the Tabernacle. (Point to the illustration on the screen.) But they had to work together and follow instructions like the Israelites did. I bet they could use some help from you to finish the job. Let me get four of you up here. I need you to hold up the poles on each corner so our tent is nice and strong. Bring up four very young kids and position them at the corners. I need two people to set up these sleeping bags inside. Bring up two older kids and hand them the sleeping bags. Who s good at decorating? I need a Small Group Leader who can make the outside look extra cozy. Bring up a Small Group Leader. Plug in the strand of lights and hand it to her so she can drape them around the tent. Let s see. We need some robes in case it rains The rethink Group, Inc. All rights reserved. 7 TECH VOLUNTEER (in the back): I ve got one! Tech volunteer brings up a poncho. Storyteller unfolds it and puts it on. STORYTELLER: (To the tech volunteer) Great. Thanks! (To everyone on stage) Look at this. You all made a great-looking campsite! You really know how to cooperate, just like the Israelites did. You can all head back to your seats for now, and I ll tell you how things ended up for them. Dismiss your helpers to their seats. Host and Worship Leader exit backstage. WRAPPING UP THE STORY STORYTELLER: Now, what do you think? Were the Israelites able to make the Tabernacle exactly like God wanted? Were they able to work together to finish the job? Let s see. Open the Bible to Exodus 39:42-43 (NIrV) and read. The Israelites had done all the work just as the LORD had commanded Moses. Moses looked over the work carefully. He saw that the workers had done it just as the LORD had commanded. So Moses gave them his blessing. High five, Israelites! It just goes to show you good things happen when you cooperate. God knew exactly what He was doing when He gave Moses His plans for the Tabernacle. He knew that Moses would be a great leader, that Aaron and his sons were the right ones to be the priests, and that the skilled workers like Bezalel and Oholiab would be able to bring their very best to the job, too. Everybody had a part to play. Together, with God's help, they had created a beautiful home for God to live among His people. When we look at what the Israelites were able to do, it s clear... CG: Bottom Line Slide - [Bottom Line] God wants us to work together. That s what cooperation is all about: working together to do more than we can do alone. That s how God designed us to work best with each other. You can help your friend do her chores so the two of you can play outside sooner. You can really listen to your coach at soccer practice so you'll play better as a team. You can even cooperate with your brothers and sisters at home instead of arguing and getting on each other s nerves. Every day, we can choose to work WITH each other to make a difference. We can work together to love others, to help people in need, and to point others to Jesus. That s how we cooperate as the church to do God s work in the lives of people around us. When we cooperate, we remember that God is in control. We remember that [Basic Truth] we can trust Him no matter what. It s not about what each of us can do on our own. It s about what we can do together. That s what our Memory Verse is all about. It s Ecclesiastes 4:9. (Hold up Bible.) CG: Memory Verse Slide Two people are better than one. They can help each other in everything they do, Ecclesiastes 4:9. It s true. We CAN do more together. Now it s time for you to head back to Small Group and talk some more about that with your friends. Have fun! At the end the Storyteller should pray for the group and dismiss kids to Small Group 7.
