2 From the RAbbi Teach people the truth when they are young and they will not abandon it, even in old age. Proverbs 22.6 When I first arrived here at B nai Sholom I was struck by how devoted the adults in the congregation are to all the young people: From David Glick carrying around sweets in his pocket to give to every child (no matter their age!) to extra people coming to Friday night service to watch the religious school reenact the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. A big thank you to everyone who came to a Tuesday evening event in April where Gavin Beverage presented his Mitzvah project! To bring you up to speed, Gavin s project has been learning about the Hoops Children s Hospital at Cabell- Huntington and raising money for it. If we want our children to learn how to reach out and heal the world to do tikkun olam we have to support them in their efforts. I can tell you from personal experience that getting people to donate to a cause is a huge undertaking. You have to find out about the cause you want to support, be moved enough to spend your personal resources of time and energy and personal capital, and then do that very hard piece of asking people to part with a few of their hard-earned dollars. Gavin has done all of this. He learned from the grandfather of a sick child how hard it is for a family to have to have a child at Cincinnati Children s Hospital when their jobs and other children are here in Huntington. He has toured the Hoops facility and learned what is special about a children s hospital. He told us at his presentation in April how frightened children can be to spend the night away from home with doctors and nurses all around. There are suites in the in-patient facilities so the families including siblings can stay right with the sick child. There is special programming to ease the stress of hospitalization for children, and help the healing process. Support Gavin in his first efforts to change the world. You probably have things you can teach him about fundraising, relating to people in the congregation, publicity and marketing, the healthcare system, stories about sicknesses in your own family, and on and on. If you can t afford anymore giving right now that s fine too tell him that. Tell him how you have planned your tzedakah priorities and this particular cause doesn t work for you. Gavin plans to be at the congregational meeting on May 18 so you can speak with him then. If you can t make it, write a check to CHH (Cabell Huntington Hospital) and leave it in an envelope in the B nai Sholom office with Gavin s name on it. And help him do his part in tikkun olam, repairing the world. Our Shabbat Morning Service on May 31 will be out at Barboursville Park at 10:00. Come share Gavin s love of nature and his love of Torah as we celebrate his becoming a Bar Mitzvah. Wishing you a joyous spring, full of teaching and learning! Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton 2 May 2014

4 Gavin Beverage s Mitzvah Project to Benefit Hoops Family Children s Hospital If you weren t able to come to Gavin s Mitzvah presentation in late April, you can still participate if you wish. As his mitzvah project, Gavin has chosen to raise funds for the Hoops Family Children s Hospital at Cabell Huntington Hospital. He wanted a mitzvah project that kept funds local in order to benefit our community directly. He was inspired by Mr. John Preston Smith whose grandson was born with a chromosomal disorder that required more care than our local hospitals could provide. It is Gavin s hope to be able to make a donation to the Hoop Family Children s Hospital on behalf of himself and Mr. Smith. Make your check payable to CHH and send it to B nai Sholom for Gavin to pick up. Please write Attn. Gavin Beverage on the envelope. The celebration continues with a cookout (non-kosher) and fishing immediately following the service, Barboursville Park, Shelter 8. Lag BaOmer - The 30th Day EVERYONE IS INVITED Saturday, May 17, 5:00 pm Barboursville Park down by the lake. Come practice your archery skills - really - and have a picnic in the park! Potluck Picnic - we supply the hot dogs. Celebrating the 30th day of the Omer (more than half-way to Shavuot) is an ancient practice worth trying. As we are counting our way each day toward the receiving of the Torah at Mt. Sinai, we take a day to tell some of those amazing Talmudic superhero stories (you won't believe it) and revel in the spring time and - yes - shoot bows and arrows. 4 May 2014

9 Another big thank you goes to Joe Horn for his patience in hanging all the beautiful art in the lobby and hallway for us to enjoy. Drilling in the cement walls was no easy feat but as always Joe made it look easy. He also put up with Deborah Pohlman and me looking over his shoulder all the while he was working, which in itself deserves the biggest thank you. Each picture is hung very straight and secure thanks to Joe. Herman Glaser for organizing once again with the help of so many the very moving Holocaust Remembrance Day on Sunday, April 27. The weather surely cooperated and the community along with our congregation was very supportive, as many came to read names throughout the day. Thank you also to the Yiddish choir and violinist Patricia Green for the beautiful songs at the closing service. Your voices stirred our hearts with the lovely melodies. It is on days like these I am very proud of our congregation and all the good things we do as a team. Susan and Marc Miller for inviting to your home for first Passover Seder Marshall student, David Copeland. David told me he had a wonderful time and felt so welcomed by everyone. I know the food was wonderful, as was the company he was able to enjoy. They even celebrated his birthday that evening with a candle in a macaroon, which made him happy! Herman and Mary Lee Glaser and Marilyn Polan for your generous donations that allowed our fabulous Marshall students to attend our beautiful second Passover Seder with no cost to them. It was great to look over and see a full table of students sitting together enjoying a meal in our building. No doubt their presence sure brightens up the place. They let me know a good time was had by all and they appreciate how we care so much about them. Sharon Pressman, Pat Johnson, Miranda Monroe and all the others who jumped in to help her with our fantastic second Passover Seder. The preparation is not easy, even though Sharon makes it look that way. It is a big undertaking each year and requires many hands to make it all come together. In this instance there are never enough hands, so next year Sharon, we will find a way to give you more hands. Tom Pressman for leading two Seders for local churches when Rabbi was unable to be there. Rabbi David Wucher for his wonderful portrayal of Jewish Civil War Chaplain Rabbi Leopold Sarner at the April Eat, Pray, Learn. Rabbi David and Tori Wucher for the beautiful two pieces of Jewish art that they donated to the Temple. Check it out next time you are at the Temple. You will find them gracing the west wall of the 10th Street hallway. Congratulations to Adam Levy and his family on Adam's Senior Showcase at Marshall University s Birke Art Gallery last month. I am so glad I attended, as are all the others as we got to see first hand how talented a young man Adam is. His photography along with his presentation on the hot topic of guns left you pondering this important issue as you walked away. The presentation was colorful and well thought out, which made it powerful to see. Great job Adam! Thank you for inviting us to see your work. Congratulations to Deedee Mufson on the launch of her new book at the Huntington Museum of Art. Your book is fabulous and such a lovely way to preserve all the amazing articles you have written for the Herald Dispatch over the years. Everyone I know looks forward to your articles as you have such a unique way of delivering your important messages. Congratulations to Gavin Beverage for educating us on the Hoops Family Children s Hospital at Cabell Huntington Hospital as a part of his Bar Mitzvah experience. You did a great presentation and we appreciate all the hard work you are doing to get the word out about this important endeavor for families with sick children in our area. If you were not able to make Gavin's presentation, he left packets in the temple office with all the information he presented to us and would appreciate any support possible from the congregation. A nice CD accompanies the envelope as a thank you for taking the time to help. Steven Shattls on being interviewed in a story for the New York Times about the health care law. Welcome back Leah Levy from your adventures in Peru. Leah was in Cusco, Peru for three months volunteering with an international agency that places people in agencies where volunteers are used in these countries. We missed you while you were gone and look forward to hearing about all the great things you did and saw while you were gone. I looked at some pictures along the way and know the memories you made will be everlasting and probably life changing in some ways. Good for you for taking this adventure.

12 Visit our new website for all kinds of Temple news and pictures! Thanks to Chad Greene for continuing to do a fabulous job with the Temple website! Congratulations to Derek on becoming Jewish! We are so happy you have joined us! The story about this Ark really began 3 years before it was built. In the fall of 1963, I met a wonderfully young couple, Frank and Adrianne Sundheim, at the home of my friends and business partners, Shirley and Charlie Broh. Frank was the new Rabbi at Ohev Sholom, and was busy with the building of the new addition to the temple. My shop at that time was near the temple, in the 900 block of 11 ½ Street alley. Frank was a frequent visitor at the shop and hired me to do various chores for him at the new building. We became good friends, and he gave me the nick name, The Fixer. After the very hot summer of 1964, Frank came up with the idea of having services in the new addition, since it was air conditioned and the main sanctuary was not. He showed me a catalog of church furniture and asked if I could build a portable Ark. The furniture was very expensive and the new building had used all the money available at that time. I told him I would build it for free, at night, if he would be my helper. He told me that the only tools he was proficient in were a finger nail clipper, knife, fork, and spoon, but he could sing and play the piano. After many sketches of, this and that, we came up with a design that was within my limited tooling. His idea for the rustic door panels with the symbols of the ten commandants, was very doable. I found some very old Chestnut boards from a barn in Wayne County. He traced the letters for me on the panels and I carved them out with a Dremel Tool and blackened them with a propane welding torch. We worked very hard on the project and he was very good help. It was a joy working with him. He kept me constantly entertained with his great wit and good humor. We could never have imagined that 22 years later on New Year Eve of 1985, Shirley and I would be married in Frank and Adrianne s living room in Tampa, Florida. Life is sweet. 12 May 2014

Voice of the Federated - Jewish Federation of North America And Federated Jewish Charities of Huntington New immigrants to mark Passover in Israel after fleeing Federated Jewish Charities of Huntington wants to thank all who helped and supported the Israel Independence Day Celebration. Israel is celebrating the 66 th anniversary of its rebirth as a sovereign State as the homeland of the Jewish people and in view of recent events in Ukraine, we are compelled to act in support of Israel. *A leaflet was distributed by masked men in Donetsk, Ukraine demanding, under threat of deportation, that all Jews register themselves and family members with a list of their properties. *A rabbinical student in the Ukraine was stabbed by three men while returning from synagogue. *A synagogue in Zaporizhia in eastern Ukraine was hit with firebombs. *A wall of Odessa Jewish cemetery and a synagogue in the Crimean Peninsula were defaced with swastikas and the inscription: "Death to the Jews." In light of the instability in the Ukraine, Jewish Federations of North Amercia continues to aid threatened Ukrainian Jewish communities. JFNA is also facilitating their immigration to Israel as well as increasing numbers of other Western European Jews facing the dramatic rise of anti-semitism. Just as we Jews fled ancient Egypt and found refuge in Ertez Israel, there are Jews throughout the world today that need our help finding sanctuary in the State of Israel. Working together we must help keep Israel a strong, safe haven for the Jewish people. Your contribution to the Federated will help make this possible. Federated Jewish Charities of Huntington P.O.
