2 From the RAbbi THERE WAS A KING who sent out a proclamation saying that nobody could see him without first honoring his queen. Just so, the Holy Blessed One said to Israel There is no shiva (7 days of mourning) and no brit milah (circumcision) [no ending and no beginning] without Shabbat. Pesikta de Rav Kahana (Rabbi Kahana s Verses) from the Land of Israel in the 5 th century AS WINTER BREAK IS OVER, with a touch of snow on the ground, I think what a wonderful six months this has been and how nice it was to take a break. Mine began by attending the Union of Reform Judaism Biennial in the DC area with 6500 of my closest Jewish friends. Our Friday afternoon guest was President Barack Obama. He gave a shout-out to NFTY, and the 500 youth group members in the audience surged to their feet all fired up! The day before, we hosted Ehud Barak, Deputy Prime Minister of Israel. Great musicians led us in song and dance and prayer. I got practical information about rabbinic and congregational evaluation that will come in handy soon. Most importantly, I reaffirmed my conviction that we are not alone here in Huntington. We are connected supporting and supported by Jews around the world. I will share pertinent details as the opportunity arises. BACK HOME, there were many new faces in the crowd at our Chanukah Supper, including several members of the Huntington Islamic Association. The children were thrilled with the gelt; the adults were pleased to have a tour of our gorgeous building. Everyone bathed in the candlelight, sang along with the Yiddish Chorus, and enjoyed the fine food prepared by Sisterhood. GETTING REFRESHED is vital to doing good work. We all have our own personal keys to invigoration; happily, Judaism comes with one built in. Shabbat comes every week offering the opportunity to set things aside and energize. Do whatever works for you: get extra sleep, be with friends and family, play Consider coming to temple on Saturday mornings. In the context of our music-filled Shabbat Morning we read Torah from the Scroll, and also pull out books and study the text together. We illuminate the text through our various disciplines law, archeology, medicine to name a few. Learning the ancient stories and how they continue on in our own lives is one of the things that rejuvenates me the most: Torah as inspiration. SPECIAL SHABBAT January 20-21: Friday night Rabbi Gaylia Rooks and Steve Stuhlbarg, two old friends, will install me as rabbi. Though I am already Rabbi of B nai Sholom, this is a ritual to celebrate our partnership. The music will be lovely and the food delicious. I hope to see everyone there. Saturday morning we will have service and Torah Study as usual and then Brunch with the Rabbis. Rabbi Gaylia and Steve will lead us on a musical sing-along history of 4000 years of Jewish history. Please come. AS WE CELEBRATE we try to ease suffering where we can. I invite you to make a donation either to the Huntington Area Food Bank at www. hafb.org, or to the efforts of American Jewish World Service to wipe out world hunger on our very own AJWS web page: bit.ly/sa7tep - or both! May 2012 be a year of renewal, Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton 2 January 2012

Box 2674 Huntington, WV With help from the Jewish Federations-supported Jewish Agency for Israel, an increasing number of Jews are immigrating to the Jewish state from countries such as Cuba, Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, Iraq and other areas of the Middle East. Some 21,300 Jews made aliyah from around the world in the Jewish year 5771, up 19 percent from the previous year. Learn more about aliyah to Israel. With scholarships from the Ethiopian National Project (ENP), an organization supported by Jewish Federations, more Ethiopian-Israelis are becoming physicians. For each of the past five years, ENP has provided six students with Yanoff Master Ethiopian-Israeli Healthcare Scholarships to support their medical studies. The students also serve as role models for the more than 17,000 Ethiopian-Israeli teenagers. Learn more about ENP s scholarship programs. World ORT, which is supported by Jewish Federations, will open the largest Jewish high school in the former Soviet Union early next year, in the Moldovan capital of Kishinev.
