2 From the RAbbi Kol Yisraeil arevim zeh l zeh. All Israel is responsible one for the other. Babylonian Talmud, Shevuot 39a We count the days from Passover to Shavuot, which this year will be the Confirmation of Aysa Cains, Nathan Jurin, Charlie Newfeld and Aaron Scarr. (See page 5 for details.) The five of us have been discussing things Jewish this year and teasing out the most compelling bits: The parts that may carry a person through difficult circumstances and the parts that give us a reason to live Jewish lives. Come to the Shavuot Service to celebrate the Giving of Torah and learn from them. One integral part of Judaism is Israel. Israel means a lot of things to a lot of people. It refers to the modern State of Israel Medinat Yisraeil. It also means the People of Israel Am Yisraeil who are all responsible for each other, according to Talmud. I was very proud of the Huntington Jewish community in April when so many of us came together over the course of a weekend in celebration of Israel the country. Many were involved in the planning and logistics and many more showed up to participate in the events. Our local contingent of Am Yisraeil supported Medinat Yisraeil. What excited me most is that people representing different points of view came. We have had some hard words in our community about our various approaches to the State of Israel. My role has been to persuade everyone that supporting Israel is more important than our very real differences of opinion. We have had some tentative conversations about these various views, and there is plenty more work to be done there. Yet on Israel weekend we put that aside and came together in support of Israel. Israel is vital to Judaism for so many reasons. It is a refuge for Jews in dangerous times. It is a place where Jews work to turn millennial-old values into reality, to see if it is possible to build a just society. Israel is the place where the Hebrew language lives again, and it is the source of Jewish culture that has revitalized Jewish life around the world. The Talmud envisioned Jews all over the world kol Yisraeil as responsible for each others deeds, praiseworthy and shameful ones alike. In order for that to be true we have to communicate with each other. That begins here. During Friday night services we have been discussing the question: Why be Jewish? I am collecting all your reasons, all our favorite things about Judaism, all the guidance Judaism provides for living in a complex world. (They may turn out to be integral to our High Holy Day observance this year.) Chag Shavuot Sameach Happy Shavuot! Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton The Rabbi wants to visit you in the hospital. Please don't expect that she will find out about it somehow. If you or someone you love is in the hospital, please call the B'nai Sholom office: If you would prefer not to be visited, she would be glad to call if you provide a cell phone number. 2

5 Why is the Torah full of references to various gods, idols, and oracles? How did oracles come to influence entire nations? Why did Abraham go up that mountain so obediently to sacrifice his son? Would he do it today? And more importantly, should he do it today? These are just some of the difficult questions addressed by Julian Jaynes's influential and controversial theory of the origin of subjective consciousness or the "modern mind." Registration is available on the Temple Israel website: Congregational Dinner Meeting Sunday, May 19 6:00 P.M.
