2 From the RAbbi ISRAEL IS 64 (AND WE RE GOING TO VISIT)! Send me a postcard, drop me a line stating point of view Indicate precisely what you mean to say, yours sincerely wasting away Give me your answer, fill in a form, mine forever more Will you still need me, will you still feed me when I'm sixty-four? Israel is 64 this year! Israel says to American Jews: DO you still need me now that I m 64? I ask because I feel you turning away sometimes and not always being supportive. American Jews say to Israel: DO you still feed me now that you re 64? I ask because I worry about some of the things I see you doing and wonder if you can live up to my expectations. In spite of the worries, the answer is YES. Israel and American Jews NEED EACH OTHER. American Jews and Israel still FEED EACH OTHER. Eretz Yisrael, the Land of Israel offers a vast archeological record, multiple biospheres, and biblical references around every corner. As Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel writes about the Land: Biblical chapters hovering everywhere. Places like Hebrew letters, waiting to be vocalized, waiting for crowns with which to be adorned. The land is a text. Here you are illiterate unless you remem ber words of Scripture. Wherever you stand you are at the frontier of biblical moments. As you may know and you saw and heard if you were in Pullman Square for the Israel Independence Day Celebration in May* from desalination techniques to a grid for electric cars, Israel is in the forefront of innovation to deal with modern challenges. In a recent article ( Daniel Gordis points out how much of the richness of contemporary Jewish life around the world is due to the existence of Medinat Yisrael, the State of Israel. Israel is our homeland. Not only as a refuge in any future conflagration, but as a source of inspiration to use right now in our own Jewish communities. Israel is a complex modern society working through its own social and environmental issues while staving off external threats. The various elements of its rich and complicated society inevitably clash with each other. Israel is the great project of Jews finally sovereign in our own land struggling to build a just society. And we in Huntington have the amazing opportunity to VISIT ISRAEL for 10 days in November at a highly subsidized rate thanks to the Weisbergs and Martha Barvin. (See page 4) In the fall we will study Israel in our texts. Even if you won t be on the trip, please join our learning sessions as we explore the ways in which Israel feeds us, nourishes us and inspires us; as we study our responsibilities toward Israel and how we can support the land and the people right now. Bivrakha, with blessing, Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton *Thanks to Ronni Glaser and Federated Jewish Charities of Huntington for organizing it. See photos on their website: **Thanks to Judy Lentz and Herman Glaser for bringing this to my attention. 2
