2 From the RAbbi FROM PURIM TO PASSOVER What freedom are you working toward this year? By Passover I will pay off my car loan and be free of that debt! By Passover I will clear all the snack food out of the house (along with the leaven) and be free to start my healthy diet in earnest. The month between Purim and Passover is a time in the Jewish calendar when we are thinking especially about freedoms our own and others. West Virginians should no longer refuse to rent an apartment to a person because he is gay. Nor should we refuse to hire someone because she is a lesbian. There is a bill before the West Virginia House of Delegates this spring amending the Employment and Housing Nondiscrimination Act (EHNDA). It adds sexual orientation and gender identity to the categories of people protected by West Virginia laws prohibiting discrimination in housing, employment, and public accommodations, as race, gender, religion, and other categories have long been protected. And God created humans in God s own image, in the image of God, God created them; male and female God created them. Liberal Judaism (Reform and Conservative) derives a basic value from this verse from the first chapter of Genesis (Bereishit in Hebrew): All people are created in God s image and so should be equally valued, no matter how different they may seem to be. For liberal Jews it is unjust to discriminate against a person because of his or her sexual preference. It is simply a matter of civil rights. I would like to sign a letter in the name of B nai Sholom Congregation in support of extending this basic right in West Virginia. The Board does not think I should, in case there is someone in the congregation who disagrees even though no one in attendance at the February meeting was opposed to the concept. I must be guided by the Board in this, but I ask you please to contact me or any member of the Board if indeed you are opposed. I will ask again at the March Board meeting (March 12) if I can sign in the name of the congregation. Discrimination against Jews in regard to housing and employment is largely a thing of the past in the United States, thanks to the principles of justice and equality which are foundational to this nation. As Passover approaches we remember how difficult things have been for us as a cultural minority over the past two millennia. This season we rededicate ourselves to work for basic human rights for all. Everyone should have adequate food, housing and employment. There is a lot of work to be done in all these areas. In the near future you ll hear me talking about Education Matters a joint initiative between River Cities United Way and the Cabell County School Board to find ways to increase the local high school graduation rate. For now, please join me in supporting a group of West Virginia citizens who are being discriminated against to change the state law which allows that discrimination. Or - tell me why not. May this Passover season be a joyous and meaningful one for us all. Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton The Rabbi wants to visit you in the hospital. Please don't expect that she will find out about it somehow. If you or someone you love is in the hospital, please call the B'nai Sholom office: If you would prefer not to be visited, she would be glad to call if you provide a cell phone number. 2 March 2013

13 B NAI SHOLOM NEWSLETTER JoDee Gottlieb and Peter Ingram 2057 Enslow Boulevard Huntington, WV (304) John and Jean Rosenberg 147 Clark Drive Prestonsburg, KY (606) B NAI SHOLOM IS PARTNERING WITH MARSHALL S COLLEGE OF FINE ARTS TO SUPPORT THE HUNTINGTON AREA FOOD BANK and we need your help!!! EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT The Empty Bowls offers guests who contribute $12, a generous portion of soup donated by area restaurants, and served in a unique ceramic bowl, handmade by a student in Marshall s Keramos Student Pottery Guild. The bowl is yours to take home as a lasting reminder of the hunger that so many in our region regularly face. This year s event will be Friday, April 19, at the First Presbyterian Church, 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. There is also an opportunity to bid on dozens of items at a SILENT AUCTION. Last year s lunch and the auction raised nearly $18,500, with all proceeds going to the Huntington Area Food Bank (HAFB) a nonprofit food distribution center that provides food to soup kitchens, emergency relief shelters and other hunger relief programs throughout the Tri-State. Each dollar donated at Empty Bowls enables the Food Bank to distribute seven pounds of food to the hungry in our region. Every $12 donation the price of your special lunch will feed an entire family for three weeks. As partners in this important project, B nai Sholom Congregation has assumed responsibility for obtaining items for the SILENT AUCTION. This will involve contacting local businesses and local attractions for donations. WE ARE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS TO HELP US SOLICIT THESE DONATIONS DURING MARCH and APRIL. If you are interested in helping with this Temple/ Marshall partnership to support the Food Bank, please contact: Sam Kincaid: (304) kincaid@marshall.edu March
