2 From the RAbbi And [God] said [to Jacob], Fear not to go down to Egypt I Myself will go down with you and I Myself will also bring you back Genesis 46:3-4 As is so often the case, we have things to mourn and to celebrate at the same time. Nationally, we mourn with the families in Newtown CT. Reading Jewish responses, I found several centered on gun control issues both for and against. One writer wrote quite convincingly of the prevalence of guns in Israel and the low incidence of firearm mortality there. The most touching article I read was written by a mother of a young man with mental illness and how she struggles to keep him and those around him safe. One rabbi I spoke with just wanted to do SOMETHING, not to desecrate the dead by doing nothing. Another thing to take into consideration is that, according to the World Health Organization, thousands of children around the world die every day from contaminated water or poor hygiene. The emotional shock of healthy children coming to a violent end in our own communities is more galvanizing than the enormity of the loss of life that is commonplace every day in poor places far away from us. We might decide the appropriate action to take in response to the Connecticut tragedy is to support an institution like American Jewish World Service which gives financial support to people around the world who are designing their own solutions to their problems. Another useful step we might take is to support some of the cutting edge research and development taking place in Israel around clean water supplies. We also have cause to celebrate. Several in our congregation just returned from a trip to Israel. This was due to the generosity of the Weisberg family, especially Martha Barvin. Martha did not accompany us as originally planned because Arthur Weisberg z l (zichrono levracha may his memory be for a blessing) died just before we left. So you see our threads of mourning and celebration are inextricably woven together. Jamez Morris-Smith has officially joined the Jewish people. His chosen Hebrew name, Avichai, honors two pillars of our congregation (Art Weisberg being one of them) who were instrumental in his decision to do so. Several families have joined B nai Sholom in recent months. As most were not able to attend the service and oneg honoring them in December due to icy road conditions, we plan to do that Friday, January 11 in the Shabbat service immediately following our Tu B Shevat Seder. Others among us have lost dear ones recently. The tension between mourning and celebration is almost constant. How can we celebrate welcoming people into our midst at the same time we mourn for our losses? Our tradition teaches that there is no pure celebration or pure desolation that the knowledge and experience of both is always with us. In every evening service we pray Ma ariv Aravim we praise God for bringing on the evening, mixing light with darkness. At the Passover Seder we eat maror and charoset, the bitter with the sweet, recalling slavery and freedom. And in a recent Torah portion God tells Jacob that God will be with him, with the Israelites, through their going down and through their coming up. God is not a magician to solve our problems. God is a presence to accompany us on ALL our journeys in times of mourning and in times of celebration. God is the presence we find in each other s support. Wishing you daily awareness of the joys and sorrows of the world and family and friends to share them. Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton 2 January 2013

From Tzfat and the Golan Height, to Caesaria and Mt Tabor, to Jerusalem and Masada, Dimona and Lod, and finally Tel Aviv we had quite the trip. Meeting new friends from Wilmington, NC and Cheyenne WY (where they have fewer Jews than Huntington, and are trying to start a Federated), we got a great taste for all that Israel was and is. Meeting new friends at the Federated funded programs we visited, we were impressed with where our money goes and how well it s being used. We can t wait to do it again! Let s plan it soon. 8 B nai B rith Thanksgiving Baskets Thanks to the generosity of those listed below, B'nai B'rith and B'nai Sholom Congregation were able to make the tables of 300 of our neighbors-in-need a little more festive and nutritious for Thanksgiving. Additionally, because of the generosity of your donations, after buying foodstuffs for the 300 baskets, we were able to make a nice contribution to the Huntington Area Food Bank. Thanks to Mitch Klein, who took the baton from Herman Glaser and chaired the drive this year, and to the many who assisted in assembling and loading the baskets for delivery to the distributing organizations. The value of this long-standing tradition is widely recognized, and the need, unfortunately, is great. With your continued support, we'll do it again next year! Last year was a good one for the shop and we are grateful to each of you for spending your time, and especially your money, in Simchas & Tchotchkes. S & T (short for Simchas & Tchotchkes) has been in its current location for more than 20 years and has raised more than $20 thousand dollars for Sisterhood. We have helped you with simchas, mitzvahs, and sorrows. We try to stock the shop with things you may need for your everyday Jewish life, and for extraordinary times in your lives too. If you need something special, we will either have it, or find it. We pride ourselves on our free kisses and sometimes (depending on who waits on you) pleasant smiles. Have a wonderful year and remember to shop till you drop. Last year, we had a particularly helpful donor in the form of Jan Chertow, a frequent shopper of the month, and longtime friend. We appreciate all her help and plan to give her a hefty discount when she comes back to shop (maybe 20% or some other even number). Again, thanks to you, Jan.
