2 B'n ai Sholom Newsletter From the RAbbi I was planning to write about why liberal Judaism (Reform and Conservative) fits many of us better than Orthodoxy. Then I found this on Facebook: Rabbi Larry Milder writing about the same thing, only using Reform in place of liberal. Maybe next month we can concentrate on the Conservative message. I'm Very Reform I hear this all the time. "Rabbi, I grew up very Reform." This is what I want you to know: I am very Reform. I observe Shabbat. I pray regularly. I study Torah. I observe Kashrut. I think that makes me very Reform. I am flummoxed when I hear people describe themselves as "very Reform," when what they mean is, "I don't do much that's Jewish." That's not very Reform, or even a little Reform. I am proud of my chosen path of Jewish observance. To be a Reform Jew is to approach Judaism seriously, to believe that being Jewish means being obligated. Reform Judaism is not a license to abandon one's Jewish duties; it is a commitment to consider those duties with sincerity and to live Judaism with integrity. What, then, distinguishes my practice from more traditional approaches to Judaism? My Shabbat is real, but it is not bound by traditional definitions of work. I set my own parameters for Shabbat observance. My prayers are authentic, but they are often different from the text of traditional Jewish prayers. They are filled with creativity and a joyful approach to spirituality, rooted in Jewish language and beliefs. My study of Torah is intense and regular, but it applies all the tools of critical scholarship to understanding Torah in its historical context, written by people in a particular place and time. My practice of Kashrut is personal and ethical, and not defined by traditional prohibitions. It elevates my life by rigorously adhering to ethical standards. None of these ways of being Jewish would be regarded as "Halachically" observant, that is, adhering to Jewish law. I make no pretense of being Halachically observant. It is precisely this exercise of personal autonomy that makes me a Reform Jew. But none of that amounts to a lack of commitment, or a failure to take Judaism seriously. One who fails to take Judaism seriously is not very Reform. I am very Reform. I hope you will be, too. Rabbi Larry Milder ( Amen said Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton) 2

4 B'nai Sholom Newsletter 7:30 pm Sing along this Shabbat! To capture, preserve and share our congregation s rich history Through video interviews congregants will have the opportunity to record stories about their families and their contributions to Huntington s Jewish community and the larger tri-state area. What do you think? Would you be interested in coming by B nai Sholom and telling your family s stories to be recorded for posterity? Kevin Levine has come up with a plan: To set up a room upstairs to record reminiscences on video, and also to take still photos of any heirlooms. The first phase is to set up the studio and make the recordings. Later we can edit and decide how best to share them on the website or perhaps a kiosk style exhibition as part of a future museum. The first thing we need to get started is INTEREST. Let me know (rabbi@wv-bnaisholom.org), or let someone on the Board know, if you think this is a good idea. The next thing we ll need is some equipment: Mid-level DSLR camera or prosumer grade camcorder capable of 1080p video recording Tripod On-camera light Two fill lights Wired lavalier microphone Black background curtain Curtain rod/boom stand Please let us know if you re interested in contributing funds, time, or equipment to this effort! 4

7 ool B'NAI SHO LOM NEWSLE T TE R I want to thank my community for helping me through a very difficult time. Rabbi Eglinton, Diana Shattls, Ronni Fox-Glaser and so many more supported me, guided me and made sure I knew I was cared for. I never would have gotten through this without all of you. Sincerely, Chad Greene Thank you to Tom and P.J. Scarr and family for donating to the temple a very beautiful framed carpet. We appreciate this lovely gesture and will hang it proudly in the hall to Rabbi Jean's and Martha's offices. Dear B nai Sholom, Thank you for your generous donation in memory of our daughter, Betty Reed, to the Danville, Illinois Humane Society. We very much appreciated your kindness and sympathy during our time of loss. Sincerely, Dave, Jeannie and Claire Reed, family of Betty Reed (niece of B nai Sholom secretary, Martha Newby) Dear Congregants, We invite you to join us for the Cabell County Public Library Goes to Israel, Land of Milk and Honey, 14th Annual Gala. It will be March 21st in the Don Morris Room in the student center at Marshall with a starting time of 6:30pm. We would like B'nai Sholom to make a good showing to support the Israel theme they have chosen, but know the $200 per person donation required is very steep. So, to help with the cost and to ensure more people go to the Gala, the board decided yesterday at our meeting to use the Lewis Glick Fund to subsidize the cost and reimburse the first 30 people who respond to this message, $100 for buying tickets to attend the Gala. Eight people have already responded. Following is how to proceed: First - buy your tickets from the library. Second - contact me at dshattls@msn.com to get your $100 per person savings. Remember there is a thirty person cap on this generous offer so don't delay in letting me know your intentions. The cut off date for the first 30 people to respond is no later than 3/15/15 if you are interested. As we all know, the library is a good cause to support. Many congregants encouraged the library to use the Israel theme, so please consider helping by coming and representing our congregation in a big way. Please let me know if you plan to attend. 8 B'NAI SHO LOM NEWSLE T TE R All Aboard ARTISANS EXPRESS YOUR PHOTOS NEEDED! This summer there will be 40 decorated trains placed around downtown Huntington. They will be joyful expressions of Huntington and they will raise money for Hoops Children s Hospital. We at B nai Sholom are decorating one of those trains. Here on the right is Rabbi Jean s design. The front of the train and maybe the back, and maybe the steam cloud as much as we get photos for will be covered in photos of the Jewish community of Huntington present and past. So dig through your photos! Make color or black and white prints of them on regular printer paper. We will decoupage them onto the engine, which is made of fiberglass and about six feet long. Here s what it looks like now: The trains will be sold at auction this summer, so we do not know where they will end up afterwards. If you want to buy the train at auction, give it a permanent home, and contribute in that way to the Hoop Childrens Hospital, that would be lovely! We are especially looking for pictures of B nai Sholom or Ohev Sholom or B nai Israel congregants doing things in Huntington. Either inside one of our buildings or outside! Please let Rabbi Jean know if you are interested in helping with the painting or the decoupage. 8
