READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Rom 11:29-36; Ps 69:30-31, 33-34, 36; Lk 14:12-14 Tuesday: Rom 12:5-16b; Ps 131:1bcde-3; Lk 14:15-24 Wednesday: Rom 13:8-10; Ps 112:1b-2, 4-5, 9; Lk 14:25-33 Thursday: Ez 47:1-2, 8-9, 12; Ps 46:2-3, 5-6, 8-9; 1 Cor 3:9c-11, 16-17; Jn 2:13-22 Friday: Rom 15:14-21; Ps 98:1-4; Lk 16:1-8 Saturday: Rom 16:3-9, 16, 22-27; Ps 145:2-5, 10-11; Lk 16:9-15 Sunday: Wis 6:12-16; Ps 63:2-8; 1 Thes 4:13-18; Mt 25:1-13 Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time Do as they say, not as they do. This is what Jesus told the crowds about the scribes and the Pharisees. They sought honor and prestige. They exalted themselves by appearing to be righteous while placing burdens on those who wished to faithfully follow the law of Moses. Rather than striving to lead others to God, they lived to be seen and held in high esteem. Jesus wants his followers to live differently. Discipleship is not about seeking places of honor or titles of esteem. Rather, Jesus' followers are to focus on humble service. Disciples are to learn from their master and teacher, Jesus Christ, who came to serve rather than to be served. They are to be the living embodiment of Jesus' way of love. WHOEVER EXALTS SELF WILL BE HUMBLED The scribes and Pharisees were not the first or the last to get caught up in the pursuit of recognition and prestige. Nor were they the only ones to ever become puffed up with their own worth, failing to honor God in the process. The Levites of Malachi's time stand as examples of such misguided behavior as well. Of course, this is not only an issue for religious leaders of Biblical times. Many people allow their desire for esteem to lead them to ignore the contributions of others, hoping to appear to be solely responsible for success. Yet the exaltation that was sought may backfire when those who shared in the success are rightfully acknowledged and praised. In Jesus' words, "Whoever exalts himself will be humbled." THE GREATEST MUST SERVE Contrast the actions of the scribes and Pharisees with what Saint Paul describes as the leaders' manner with the community in Thessalonica: they were gentle, showed affection for the people, and worked hard in order not to be burdensome. They had taken to heart Jesus' instruction to serve with humility, and as a result the Thessalonians were inspired believe the word of God. True service is inspirational. Think about the people whom we most readily admire, those who inspire us to greatness. Most often, they are people who lead, not by lording their talent or position over others, but rather by humbly modeling the sort of action to which we aspire. They do not seek adulation or praise, but receive attention because their service is so deeply focused on the other. They glimpse the face of God in those whom they serve; we glimpse the face of God in those who serve with humility. "Whoever humbles himself will be exalted." Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

5 November 5, 2017 Page Five This weekend we celebrate the Mass of the Remembrance. We remember all our brothers and sisters who died this past year. Death robs us of joy, peace and future with our loved ones. It leaves on its path emptiness, vacuum, pain and aches. Despite the grief death brings, Christians still come together in the face of death to give thanks to God. We give thanks to God first for the gift of his Son, Jesus Christ. In the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, Jesus destroyed death forever. He destroyed not just his own death, but your death and my death. Thus, for Christians, death is not an end, but a door to another form of being with God. On the day each of us was baptized, we died the death which truly counted. On that day we died with Christ and rose with him. So that from here on earth a Christian begins to share everlasting life with God waiting to share the fullness of that life through the doors of death. That is why The Letter to the Romans (6:3-4) tells us: Are you unaware that we who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. Death also reminds us to give thanks to God for the gift of life. Life is indeed a gift from God. When God found it in His heart to send each of us into the world, He chose to send each of us to a particular place, at a particular time in history to fulfill a particular purpose. Whatever that purpose might be, I do not know. Each of us will have to pray, open ourselves up, allowing the Holy Spirit to direct and guide us to find and fulfill that purpose. What I know, however, is that the LORD will never call any of us home until we have fulfilled the purpose for which He created us. We are redeemed by our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our redemption was foretold by the Father even in the Book of the Prophet Isaiah where the LORD said, Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name: you are mine. When you pass through the water, I will be with you; in the rivers you shall not drown. When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned; the flames shall not consume you. For I am the LORD, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your savior (43: 1b-3a). We give thanks to God because he has redeemed us. Every Easter vigil, Catholics around the world gather in Churches and around this Paschal Candle, joining their voices with those of the angels and saints on what is considered the holiest of nights, Catholics sing the Exsultet: Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels! Exult, all creation around God s throne! Jesus Christ, our king, is risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation! Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendor, radiant in the brightness of your king! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes forever! Rejoice, O mother Church! Exult in glory! The risen Savior shines upon you! Let this place resound with joy! May the souls of all the departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen. Blessings, Fr. Ignatius
