3 February 12, 2017 Page Three Archdiocese of Chicago 2017 Annual Catholic Appeal Love Your Neighbor As Yourself Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you received with your bulletin. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. The theme Love Your Neighbor As Yourself was selected to remind us that our contributions enable the funded ministries and services to share God s love with others in our parish, our Archdiocese and throughout the world. The Annual Catholic Appeal provides funding for our schools, parishes, programs of religious education and ministerial formation, efforts to respect life and Catholic Relief Services. After the parish goal of $18,877 is reached, 100% of any additional funds come back to the parish to help fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing they will be available in your pews next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response. Women s Club Annual Salad Buffet St. Jude the Apostle Women's Club would like to invite you to their annual Salad Buffet on Tuesday, February 28th, 2017, in the school gym. DOORS OPEN at 6:00pm ( NO EARLY ARRIVALS PLEASE! ). Dinner will be served at 6:45pm. Ticket prices are $ 13 in advance ( ckets must be purchased by Sunday, February 26th to get this price ), and $ 15 at the door. Ticket price includes a catered dinner of chicken, beef, mostaccioli, potatoes, rolls and bu er in addi on to the deligh ul homemade salads donated by all our families and friends. Dessert will also be provided.. Anyone that a ends is asked to bring a homemade salad in a DISPOSABLE container. There will be a "special raffle" for those who bring a salad. Although this is not mandatory for a endance, the more salads that are donated leads to a bigger variety and be er buffet. So, why not come out for a fun-filled pre-lenten celebra on! More information may be obtained by calling SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School COS WELCOMES SUPERINTENDENT, DR. JIM RIGG The faculty, staff, administration and students of Christ Our Savior School were honored to welcome the Superintendent of Catholic Schools, Dr. Jim Rigg, to Christ Our Savior during Catholic Schools Week. Dr. Rigg was presented with a performance by our sixth grade bell choir, our praise dance troupe and junior high singing choir. Dr. Rigg participated in the Academic Scholastic Showdown by acting as a lifeline to the teams. There was a special category of Religion questions that Dr. Rigg hosted. He toured the COS building and visited classrooms, our Technology Labs as well as the Science Discovery Lab and Be a Star Theater. We are so grateful to his support of Christ Our Savior School. CAREER DAY Our students recently had the opportunity to meet several area business people on Career Day which was held during Catholic Schools Week. We would like to thank the following people who shared their stories and occupations with our students: Grades K-4: Rosella Smith, Nurse; David Hayslett, Truck Driver; Daniel Sergott, Hospital Maintenance and Dyron Wilson Bey, State Licensed Firearms Instructor. Grades 5-8: Lynn Janusz, Funeral Director at Thornridge Funeral Home; Judge John Doody, former Mayor of Glenwood and retired Circuit Court Judge; Henry Stoutmire, Parking Garage Attendant and Rochelle Tucker, our Physical Education Teacher. The students and teachers were fascinated with all the surprising information that was presented. WHY I LOVE MY SCHOOL 8 th Grade Reflections Continue I am glad my parents send me to Christ Our Savior Catholic School. Catholic education lights the way for me in many ways. First, it provides great academics for students of all ages. The teachers work hard to find what is best for the student s future and help the students without being negative. It has its spiritual ways of helping others to know God and all the good works he does for us. Secondly, it is counted as a great environment. It holds lots of love and support through each and every person. It makes the place seem sacred with all the good acts of others. It also prepares students for their next grade. It holds celebrations of the Catholic faith. First, Sirach teaches that although we experience many things beyond our control, we face essential choices in life. These choices have profound consequences, for good or for evil. God does not coerce our choices, but graciously accompanies us within them. God is always seeking to transform our heart, to orient our heart toward God and toward love for others. Saint Paul reminds us that God has been up to this heart-transforming work all along, from ages long ago, through Christ Jesus, and continuing now in the work of the Spirit. In the Gospel reading, Jesus raises the bar on our behavior, to get us to pay attention to our inner attitudes and values. By disturbing us in this way, Jesus helps us begin to see our hidden complacencies and compromises. Jesus shows us that deep within, God is always working on us, always inviting us into transformation. HIDING FROM OURSELVES In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus seems pretty rough on religious people. In the Sermon on the Mount (Chapters 5 through 7), Jesus frequently speaks to people who know the Law of Moses, and to those who hold positions of authority in the Jewish community. Jesus was shaking them up! In today's Gospel, when he interprets specific portions of the Law, he relates the Law to the deeper regions of the human heart. He challenges his listeners, and us, to see what we hide from ourselves. If we are not diligent, we can use a system of ethics or religious law to assure ourselves and others that we are morally upright. When this happens, we can think there is no need for us to reflect or to change, and we have no need for forgiveness. Jesus reminds us that we can sometimes use religion to distract us from the difficult, ongoing work of selfreflection and repentance. LIFE IN THE REIGN OF GOD When Jesus challenges his listeners in today's Gospel, he does not seek to humiliate them or to trap them in guilt or shame. His challenges are part of his larger message of the graciousness of God. Jesus is describing life in the reign of God, which is at the heart of his teaching and ministry. He is describing those who flourish there: people who seek reconciliation, who honor both women and men, who speak truthfully. Jesus invites his listeners to live in the reign of God, on earth as in heaven. These are the meek, the poor, the merciful and pure-hearted, as described earlier in the Beatitudes. They are aware of their flaws, but they also know that God is with them, cherishing and guiding them. They are forgiving of others because they have been forgiven. They continually strive to listen to God in prayer. They are able to live with an open heart, and to live in trust in God. As Jesus' listeners today, we are called to live the same way.
