3 March 1, 2015 Page Three Excerpt from the Message of his holiness pope francis for lent 2015 Dear Brothers and Sisters, Lent is a time of renewal for the whole Church, for each community and every believer. Above all it is a time of grace (2 Cor6:2). God does not ask of us anything that he himself has not first given us. We love because he first has loved us (1 Jn 4:19). He is not aloof from us. Each one of us has a place in his heart. He knows us by name, he cares for us and he seeks us out whenever we turn away from him. He is interested in each of us; his love does not allow him to be indifferent to what happens to us. Usually, when we are healthy and comfortable, we forget about others (something God the Father never does): we are unconcerned with their problems, their sufferings and the injustices they endure Our heart grows cold. As long as I am relatively healthy and comfortable, I don t think about those less well off. Today, this selfish attitude of indifference has taken on global proportions, to the extent that we can speak of a globalization of indifference. It is a problem which we, as Christians, need to confront. When the people of God are converted to his love, they find answers to the questions that history continually raises. One of the most urgent challenges which I would like to address in this Message is precisely the globalization of indifference. Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation. In the Incarnation, in the earthly life, death, and resurrection of the Son of God, the gate between God and man, between heaven and earth, opens once for all. The Church is like the hand holding open this gate, thanks to her proclamation of God s word, her celebration of the sacraments and her witness of the faith which works through love (cf. Gal 5:6). But the world tends to withdraw into itself and shut that door through which God comes into the world and the world comes to him. Hence the hand, which is the Church, must never be surprised if it is rejected, crushed and wounded. God s people, then, need this interior renewal, lest we become indifferent and withdraw into ourselves.

From that moment on, Peter, James, and John were ardent followers, forsaking everything to follow in their Master's footsteps. Like the psalmist crying, "O Lord, I am your servant," the three disciples committed themselves to lives of incredible hardship and indescribable joy. After that day on the mountain, they never again wavered in their chosen vocation. Though our tests may not be as severe as Abraham's and our peak experiences not as dramatic as the Transfiguration, we all face the daily challenges of walking "before the Lord in the land of the living." Gracious and merciful God, we ask that you send your Spirit among us to guide us and direct us in order to inspire all of our political leaders to advance the culture of life in their duty to uphold the common good for all the people they serve. You sent your Son Jesus to teach us how to pray, how to serve you in obedience and how to be the people you are calling us to be. You inspire us each and every day to appreciate the gifts you bestow upon us and to use them to change the hearts and minds of all people. The most precious gift you have given to us is the gift of life and you call us to be good stewards of all your creation. Help us to cultivate a spirit of prayer and of reconciliation for the lack of due diligence in protecting the most vulnerable among us; the children who are forgotten, abandoned and thought of as an inconvenience to the welfare of societies. Inspire all those in public office to protect the dignity of the unborn and those who are living who are deemed unfit to receive our care. Help us to receive your wisdom so that we may know how best to serve you and your people. We ask this through Christ our Lord. 5 March 1, 2015 SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School ATTENTION CATHOLIC STUDENTS There will be a meeting for those Christ Our Savior School second grade Catholic students (and their parents) who are preparing to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday March 9, 2015 at 6 p.m. in McMahon Hall. The Sacrament will be received on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 11 a.m. in St. Jude the Apostle Church. Eighth grade Confirmation candidates should be using their checklist to make sure all required documents and fees have been turned into the main office. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Marsha Johnson, Coordinator of Religious Education, at TERRA NOVA TESTING Terra Nova Achievement testing will begin the week of March 2. Students in Grades 2-7 will be tested in the areas of Reading, Language Arts, Math, Science and Social Studies. Not only are there multiple choice answers, but students are required to complete extended response narrative answers in a Part 2 section for all subject areas. It is a challenging task to explain answers and provide examples particularly in the area of Math. An In View Cognitive Assessment will also be administered. Please keep our students in your prayers this week.
