I am the coordinator of Religious Education and Youth Ministry at St. Jude the Apostle. I would like to tell you a little about St. Josephine Bakhita.

She was eventually sold to an Italian diplomat when she was 14 years old and introduced to Christianity by the Sisters of Charity in Venice.

At the convent she served as the cook, seamstress, sacristan, and doorkeeper for the next 50 years until her death. She was very charismatic and known for her gentle voice and smile.

On December 1, 1978 Pope John Paul II began the first step of canonization and declared Josephine Venerabilis.

McCarthy challenged us to research little known saints Saint Josephine Bakhita My name is Marsha Johnson. I am the coordinator of Religious Education and Youth Ministry at St. Jude the Apostle. I would like to tell you a little about St. Josephine Bakhita. Josephine Bakhita was born in Sudan but kidnapped and sold into slavery as a little girl. She went through a series of cruel slave owners that tortured her. She was eventually sold to an Italian diplomat when she was 14 years old and introduced to Christianity by the Sisters of Charity in Venice. On December 7, 1893 Josephine Bakhita entered the novitiate of the Canossian Sisters and three years later she took her vows. At the convent she served as the cook, seamstress, sacristan, and doorkeeper for the next 50 years until her death. She was very charismatic and known for her gentle voice and smile. When asked about her experience as a slave, she thanked her kidnappers. For had she not been kidnapped, she might never have come to know Jesus Christ and entered His Church. On December 1, 1978 Pope John Paul II began the first step of canonization and declared Josephine Venerabilis. On May 17, 1992 she was declared Blessed and on October 1, 2000 she was canonized. Isaiah has the vineyard under good and faithful care, but still it produces wild grapes. In the Gospel, the vineyard presumably had a good harvest, but the workers refuse to give any of the grapes to the landowner. Where do I fit in? Do I ignore all that God does to help me be a good disciple? Am I too busy to take time to pray or read the Bible? Do I hold onto grudges instead of forgiving and releasing them? Do I decline the invitations to go on a retreat? If any of these are true, I might be like the vineyard in the first reading, producing no fruit despite all the opportunities God has given me. Or we may be the other side of the coin. We had our children baptized when they were babies. We gave them as good an example as we could, teaching them to love others and be generous with what they have. Yet they grew up and drifted away from the faith. Then we have to remember how patient God is with us, God's people who don't always produce the fruits of faith. The tenants in the parable refer to those who would have Jesus crucified. God is patient with them. Look what happened to Saul, who persecuted many Christians before he became one himself. In our second reading he tells us to follow his example as he follows Christ. The donations will benefit the Women s Center of Greater Chicagoland who provide assistance to families in need. Every life is worth saving. Bottles can be returned any weekend in October. Our gift total was $1, SENIOR GATHERING The senior hospitality group will meet for lunch, Wednesday, Oct. 11th at noon at the South Holland Aurelio s Pizza. MEDIA CENTER The Media Center will be open in the lobby of the Church next weekend, October 14th and 15th. Please stop by to browse a variety of Holy cards, rosaries, medals and crosses for your spiritual enrichment. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS The blessing of the animals will be on Sunday, October 15, 2017 after the 11:30 AM Mass. Please bring your animals to the west parking lot. ANOINTING OF THE SICK The grace of the Sacrament will be administered at all the weekend masses on Saturday, October 21st and Sunday, October 22nd. HANDBELL CHOIR The Holy Ghost Handbell Choir practices on Wednesday evenings at 7 p.m. in church. We play once a month at a weekend Mass, and for Christmas and Easter and other special occasions. We are looking for more players. Knowledge of music is helpful, and we will teach you how to play handbells. If you are interested, just come to a practice session, or call the Rectory Office for more information HALLOWEEN PARTY Genoa & Pinta Neri Councils of the Knights of Columbus are planning some freaky fun. Join us on Saturday, October 28th at Holy Ghost Parish from 12-3 PM. There will be a costume contest and refreshments. SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School SOCIAL MEDIA AND YOUR CHILD Recently Officer Kurt Kremski, Youth Officer, from the South Holland Police Department, stopped by Christ Our Savior to discuss the dangers of social media with students in Grades 6-8. Topics discussed were Facebook, Snap Chat, Internet usage and the dangers of using this social media inappropriately. Officer Kremski will come back to COS in October to address families as part of our Parent University series. As soon as we have a confirmed date, I would like to extend the invitation to all parents/guardians of parish school age children to attend this very informative discussion. More information will be forthcoming. FAMILY TIP DIGITAL FOOTPRINT & REPUTATION When using social media, children need to understand how to protect their own privacy and respect others privacy. Our digital world is permanent, and with each post, children are building a digital footprint. By encouraging your child to self-reflect before they self-reveal, they will consider and think twice about what they share online and how that can impact themselves and others going into the future. In a world where anything created online can be copied, pasted and sent to thousands of people in a heartbeat, privacy starts to mean something different than simply guarding personal information. On the positive side, this culture of sharing holds tremendous promise for young people to express themselves, collaborate and find support for their ideas and interests. However, the ease of online disclosure also poses risks for young people. A decision made in the spur of a moment a funny picture, a certain post can resurface years later. Something originally sent to a friend can be sent to a friend s friend, and so on. That s how secrets become headlines and how false information spreads fast and furiously to classmates, teachers, college admissions officers, future employers or the public at large. Parents/ guardians should talk to their children about using social media safely, responsibly and respectfully. Discuss constructive uses of video sharing. Be aware of the apps that your child is purchasing. Finally, parents should become educated with social media so that they can protect their children. Join us for Officer Kremski s presentation. 5 October 8, 2017 Page Five I want to use this article to update you on our calendar for October, We will administer the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at all Masses on October 21 st and 22 nd. If you know of anyone in need of this sacrament, please endeavor to bring them to Mass that weekend. If they are unable to come to church, call the rectory. Fr. Powers or I will come to their home to administer the sacrament. We had our parish mission a month ago. Parish missions are times for retreats and revivals. For a mission to be truly successful, a parish needs to build on that mission. I was contemplating on how to build on our parish mission before I had to address an immediate issue concerning Nigeria. Now we can focus back on our parish mission. I have scheduled a five-week bible study, every Tuesday from 7:00 pm to 8:00pm, on the Book of Genesis beginning October 24 th through November 21 st. If you are interested, please sign-up at the back of the church. October 28 th is the feast of our patron saint, St. Jude. To celebrate this feast, it has become our tradition to have one Mass on the last Sunday of October at 10:30 am. This year is special for us because we are also celebrating the 60 th anniversary of our parish. In the joy of this celebration, what we have decided to do is to pray for peace. At the Mass on October 29 th, we will say a prayer, together, for world peace. We then ask each parishioner to say that prayer each day until the first weekend of 2018 when we will again say that prayer together at Mass. The idea is to pray for sixty days for world peace. Each day representing each year of our parish existence. Wednesday, November 1 st, is All Saint s Day. November 2 nd is All Soul s Day. On Saturday, November 4 th, will celebrate the Mass of Remembrance. It is a Mass where we remember parishioners or family and friends of parishioners who died within the last year. If you have a family member or friend who died this past year and you wish to remember them at this Mass, please call our parish office. Finally, next weekend we will have a second collection. It will be sent to Catholic Relief Services for the people of Puerto Rico to help those affected by Hurricane Maria. The initiative for this second collection is from me and not from the Archdiocese. I am sending some money to Catholic Relief Services for those affected by Hurricane Maria. I think some parishioners may want to contribute to this effort. So, if you want to join me in contributing some money for the people of Puerto Rico affected by Hurricane Maria, you have an opportunity to do so next week. For two weeks I spoke about Nigeria and what was happening in Nigeria. Now we need to help our brothers and sisters in Puerto Rico. Shalom Always, Fr. Ignatius THE BOOK OF GENESIS Join Fr.
