3 September 18, 2016 Page Three Blessed Are Those who mourn, For They Shall Be Comforted Mourning comes from a deep sense of loss. There is the mourning of love lost; as in the case of a divorce where the divorced mourn the death of the love they once had for each other. There is the mourning of a benefit lost. For example, when the children of Israel were asked by God to spy the Promised Land, the spies came back disheartened. They stated that those who lived in the Promised Land were giants. As a result, they concluded the Israelites would not be able to conquer the land. God told them that all those who doubted his ability to bring them to the Promised Land would die in the wilderness. They would not make it to the Promised Land. The people mourned. They mourned for a benefit lost. They mourned for what would have been. There is also mourning for the loss of life that is death. When a loved one dies there is a deep sense of loss. There is a feeling of emptiness and vacuum in our hearts. Sometimes the widow or widower even wonders if they would survive the death of a spouse. They mourn the life they had together, the absence of his or her spouse in the present, and the plan of a future together. The second beatitude tells us, Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. This second beatitude proceeds from the first. The first beatitude Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven, asks us to have an absolute dependency on God. To be poor in spirit means we know we do not depend on ourselves but on God. Holding that in mind, when we consider the loss we experience in life, loss of love, loss of benefits, and loss of life, we see that at those losses it appeared as if that was the end. We wondered if we could ever make it. When you find yourself in that state of mourning, Oh! How blessed are you if you have absolutely depended on God. That is why Paul tells us in his First Letter to the Thessalonians that we must not mourn like those without hope. Poor in spirit as Deacon Mel explained it last weekend, also means emptying ourselves of ourselves. In that sense, the opposite of poor in spirit is not rich in spirit. The opposite of poor in spirit would be full in spirit. In this case, however, one is not filled with God s spirit but filled with oneself. Poor in spirit, emptying of ourselves of ourselves, will leave a vacuum where God s spirit can come in and reside in us. When God s spirit comes in to reside in us, what do you think is the first thing that spirit will do? It will convict us of our sins. The spirit of God will shine light on our secrets. At the same time, that spirit of God will reveal to us the goodness of God we have deprived ourselves of because of our sins. What the spirit of God within us reveals to us will make us mourn and repent. Oh! How lucky are you if you empty yourself of yourself allowing the spirit of God to fill you. Oh! How lucky are you when you allow that spirit of God to shine light on your sins, show you how your sins are preventing you from enjoying the beneficence of God. Oh! How lucky are you when you recognize the consequence of your sins, mourn for those sins, and then repent so that you may enjoy the graciousness of God. Blessings, Fr. Ignatius
4 Page Four September 18, 2016 THE BEATITUDES "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are they who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the land. Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be satisfied. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the clean of heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are they who are persecuted for the sake of righteousness, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward will be great in heaven. SEMINARIAN EDUCATION FUND This weekend there will be a collection for the Seminarian Education Fund. The fund helps cover the cost to educate each Archdiocesan seminarian. LOVE GROWS HERE CATECHETICAL SUNDAY This year, the Church will celebrate Catechetical Sunday on September 18, 2016 and will focus on the theme "Prayer: The Faith Prayed." It is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. We are grateful to all in our parish that participate in this important ministry. GATHERING IN FAITH Religious Education classes have begun for this year for students in Grades 1 8 that attend public school. We assist you with their faith formation and sacrament preparation. Classes meet on Monday evenings at 6 P.M. Registration forms are available on the website at A Baptismal certificate is required if not on file. For information contact Marsha Johnson at
5 September 18, 2016 TODAY'S READINGS First Reading -- The Lord never forgets the sins of those who take advantage of the poor (Amos 8:4-7). Psalm -- Praise the Lord who lifts up the poor (Psalm 113). Second Reading --Pray to the Lord, who wants everyone to be saved (1 Timothy 2:1-8). Gospel -- Be trustworthy in all things. Serve God, the only master, not mammon (Luke 16:1-13). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Prv 3:27-34; Ps 15:2-5; Lk 8:16-18 Tuesday: Prv 21:1-6, 10-13; Ps 119:1, 27, 30, 34, 35, 44; Lk 8:19-21 Wednesday: Eph 4:1-7, 11-13; Ps 19:2-5; Mt 9:9-13 Thursday: Eccl 1:2-11; Ps 90:3-6, 12-14, 17bc; Lk 9:7-9 Friday: Eccl 3:1-11; Ps 144:1b, 2abc, 3-4; Lk 9:18-22 Saturday: Eccl 11: :8; Ps 90:3-6, 12-14, 17; Lk 9:43b-45 Sunday: Am 6:1a, 4-7; Ps 146:7-10; 1 Tm 6:11-16; Lk 16:19-31 Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time The parable in today's the Gospel has a crooked steward who is commended by his master for being prudent, or clever, trying to protect himself. Jesus wanted us to be just as clever in serving the Lord. Let's look at the first two readings and how they challenge us to do more. The reading from Amos talks about those "who trample upon the needy and destroy the poor" (Amos 8:4). The challenge here is to ask yourself, "What do I do for the poor?" Most parishes have organizations to help the needy and are happy to get volunteers. Do you ever think of praying for the poor? Speaking of prayer, our second reading also challenges us to do more. Paul recommends prayers for "kings and for all in authority" (1 Timothy 2:2). It's easy to pray for friends and family; how much time do we give to prayers for government leaders and executives? Paul reminds us that God wants everyone to be saved (1 Timothy 2:4), sinners as well as saints, terrorists and embezzlers, atheists and agnostics. I'll bet you don't spend much time praying for the "bad guys." Yet Jesus said, "Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you" (Matthew 5:44). I can't say I've ever heard anyone say that was their favorite Bible passage. But if Jesus expects more from those who love him, who are we to let him down? Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S.
