3 September 27, 2015 Page Three GOD'S WORD TODAY Picking up on themes begun in last week's readings, today's scriptures focus our attention on how we use the gifts God gives us. The letter of Saint James is a stark condemnation of the misuse of wealth: "You have lived on earth in luxury and pleasure; you have fattened your hearts for the day of slaughter." The people he describes are those who withheld wages, thereby causing others to become poor. Jesus tells us that we should cut off whatever it is that causes us to sin. These readings make these autumn weeks a time for deep self-searching. What are the things that "fatten our hearts"? How do we use the gifts God gives? Are we dedicating a portion of our salaries to the work of the Church and charitable groups? Are we on the road to becoming good stewards of God's creation? TODAY S READINGS First Reading -- Moses said, "Would that all the people of the LORD were prophets!" (Numbers 11:25-29). Psalm -- The precepts of the Lord give joy to the heart (Psalm 19). Second Reading -- Come now, you rich. The wages you withheld from the workers who harvested your fields are crying aloud (James 5:1-6). Gospel -- Whoever is not against us is for us (Mark 9:38-43, 45, 47-48). This message could be the link between the reading from the book of Numbers and the Gospel. When Joshua gets upset at the two men who are suddenly prophesying and wants Moses to stop them, Moses asks, Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the people... were prophets! (Numbers 11:29). And Jesus responds to his disciple John, also upset that someone outside their group was casting out demons in Jesus name, that whoever is not against us is for us (Mark 9:40). Both Jesus and Moses recognized that God s spirit blows where it will. It sometimes ends up in the strangest places, working through very unexpected people. At the same time, no one can presume that the Spirit will always be working through a particular group or the proper channels. We must be careful of trying to box in or corral the spirit of God. Being on the inside is no guarantee. Thus, we get Jesus hard words about cutting off a hand or a leg or plucking out an eye rather than letting it cause us to sin and be cast into hell. Most say this is hyperbole, Middle Eastern exaggeration. I think Jesus is calling his disciples to look honestly at their lives and face whatever it is that leads them away from God. Deal with it, he says. We must always watch what we hold, the path we choose to walk, and the vision that guides us. Those on the inside can lose sight of, lose touch with, go off the path that takes us to the kingdom. And they can take others with them. What matters is that God s work be done. 4 Page Four September 27, 2015 TO TEACH Who Christ Is A $350 million campaign for strong parishes, Catholic education and faith formation in the Archdiocese of Chicago How Will Our Parish Benefit? As part of the total $350 million goal, To Teach Who Christ Is will raise a minimum of $150 million to support local needs in every parish across Chicago. Our goal at St. Jude the Apostle is $593,000. We will receive 70% of the funds raised. We will also receive 100% of any funds raised if we exceed our goal. This means St. Jude the Apostle will receive a minimum of $415,000 for our local needs when we reach our goal! Our share of the funds will be directed to improving: Replacement of Boiler System Down payment on Overhaul of Parking Lots Foundation of Youth Ministry Programs Campaign Update We have raised more than $269,800 thanks to the early commitments from a few families! 5 September 27, 2015 SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School WELCOME, MR. HENRY JOHNSON We are extremely overjoyed to announce Mr. Henry Johnson as our new music teacher at COS this year. Henry is a product of Catholic Schools having graduated from Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School and Holy Trinity High School both in Chicago. Henry attended Northeastern and Roosevelt Universities. Multi-talented Henry plays the piano (by ear), guitar and drums. He has mastered the clarinet and tenor sax both classically. He is a song writer and music producer. At the young age of five, Henry sang in his first choir and began playing the drums at age six. He has taught music for 20 years. Currently Henry teaches at Christ Our Savior two days per week and St. Joseph School in Homewood two other days during the week. Page Five Marian Catholic H.S. invites prospective students to Spartan Snapshot on Tuesday, Sept. 29th from 6-9 PM for a look at Marian Catholic. 700 Ashland Ave. Chicago Heights Our Youth Group will meet on Friday October 2nd in the Administration Building on Cottage Grove at 7 PM. All high school students in the parish are invited. The students will be involved in a mixture of both spiritual and social activities. The Holy Name Society will be hosting their annual Bubba Burger cookout on Saturday, Oct. 3rd in the gym after the 5:00 P.M. Mass. For $6 you will get a burger, chips and soda. Be sure to stop by The Media Center will be open next weekend October 3rd & 4th after all masses in the lobby of the church. Take a look at the items available. Remember if you are looking for a particular item, special orders are available. NEW STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Congratulations to our newly elected Student Council officers for the school year. President: Enuma Onyima; Vice-President: Sydney Powell; Secretary: Starr Hollis; and Marketing Director: Deana Chambers. Eight candidates graced the Student Council ballot. All candidates campaigned honestly and executed well written speeches. We look forward to the many Student Council run activities along with our strong cabinet. Now let s see if they keep their campaign promises!! ALUMNI NEWS Christ Our Savior, 2007 graduate, JaNelle Barnes, recently received her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. JaNelle is the daughter of Jacqueline McMorris of Dolton. JaNelle is also a 2011 graduate of St. Francis De Sales H. S. on the East Side.
