3 January 4, 2015 Page Three ON RED KETTLES, AND GIVING OUR BEST Copyright 2015 By John B. Reynolds According to their website, the Salvation Army has been ringing bells and collecting cash in their red kettles each holiday season since That s the year SA Captain Joseph McFee became troubled that so many of the poor in San Francisco were going hungry. Resolving to do something, McFee recalled his sailor days in Liverpool, England. Specifically, he recalled a large iron kettle at Stage Landing that invited passers-by to support the needy. The next day, per the website, McFee placed a similar pot at the Oakland Ferry Landing at the foot of Market Street. Beside the pot, he placed a sign that read, Keep the Pot Boiling. The money came, and the needy were fed at Christmas. With time, the west coast Salvation Army kettles spread east and eventually around the world. Everywhere, the website continues, public contributions to Salvation Army kettles enable the organization to continue its year-round efforts at helping those who would otherwise be forgotten. It s a noble mission, certainly, so like many of us, I ve contributed many times over the years. Usually, the bell-ringers are positioned outside stores and are hard to miss. Even if we want to. Two weeks before Christmas, though, at the Jewel at Golf and Arlington Heights Road, I went out of my way to put some cash in the bell ringer s kettle. Why? Because this bell-ringer was bringing it! Yeah. She had the bell in one hand and a second sound-maker (like, little, one-handed cymbals, maybe?) in the other and she had them both going full-tilt. And she was working the concrete as though it was a stage and everybody in the parking lot was the audience. Her joy was contagious on that cold afternoon, and I pretty much told her so when I put my dollar into her kettle. Actually what I told her was, I ve been putting money into these red kettles forever, but I don t recall anybody having quite as much fun ringing the bell as you. She smiled and said, Thank you. I smiled and said, Merry Christmas. When I finished my grocery shopping she was still jamming out there, and I wouldn t be surprised if she was out there jamming still. On Epiphany Sunday, I think of that bell-ringer as we remember the magi from the east seeking the new-born king. As today s Gospel explains, the travelers bow before the Child when they encounter him and offer up their treasures. Let s consider this. They give Jesus their best. Which is exactly what the drummer boy gave in that song we were humming before Christmas. Which is exactly what Mary gave when she said yes to Gabriel. Which is exactly what Joseph gave when he took his betrothed rather than divorcing her quietly. Which is exactly what the Salvation Army bell-ringer gave. Which is exactly what we should all be giving every day. This notion of giving our best is not new, of course. I mean, it s not like an epiphany moment or anything. Still, we forget to sometimes. I do, anyway. But sometimes, too, someone just ringing a bell prompts us to recall it. Sometimes someone just ringing a bell reminds us that we re called-- everyday--to be our very best selves.

This star guided them to the Lord. On this feast of Epiphany, when we celebrate the manifestation of Christ to the world, it might be good to ask ourselves where we find the stars in our own lives that lead us to Christ. Each of us is deeply aware of those people and situations that draw us away from the Lord. How aware are we of situations and people that lead us closer to the Lord? Perhaps we can take the opportunity today to ask the Lord to send more stars into our lives to present us with situations and people who truly make manifest the very presence of God. As we listen to the holy scriptures today, let us ask God to give us the strength to turn away from those, like Herod, who deceive us, and to turn more readily to those who show us the way to truth and goodness in the Lord. From Saint Margaret Sunday Missal, copyright J. S. Paluch Company PARTNERS IN THE PROMISE As a society, during these days we can be in something of a postpartum depression. Our celebrations of Christmas and the New Year are over, and after today many of us will put away the decorations and the last visible remnants of the celebrations of the past weeks. The apostle Paul today uses the expression partners in the promise. This is an uplifting phrase for us to reflect upon, and to think of as our own calling in these days following the birth of the Lord. What is this promise? We can find it in the gifts the magi bring: it is a promise of being a royal priesthood (gold), a holy nation (frankincense), a people set apart for self-giving (myrrh). We find more of the promise in Isaiah a light shines upon us! In the psalm we know a promise of a world of flowering justice, profound peace, the poor rescued, pity for the lowly and the poor. This is the promise; and one of the best ways for us to lift ourselves out of any possible low spirits we may be suffering is to live out our partnership in this promise each and every day. 5 January 4, 2015 SHEDSOMELIGHT Christ Our Savior Catholic School As a culminating activity assigned to the students enrolled in the Grades 6-8 Exploratory Literature Enrichment class, the junior high students were asked to write a poem incorporating the ideas of appreciating and cherishing their physical and mental gifts from God. The students wrote a group poem inspired by the novel Crazy Lady and the play The Miracle Worker. The writing prompt began Use your eyes as if tomorrow you would be stricken blind. What would you most want to let your gaze rest upon? Here is a section of their poem I want to see fireworks, the vibrant colors shooting through the sky, the multiple designs filling the sky with beautiful shapes, the bright lights reflecting in the eyes of the astounded. I want to see a new President get elected, the excitement that fills people s faces as they watch the President get his new assignment, as he begins to make excellent choices for the country. I want to see the American monuments soaring up high in the sky protecting America from danger being a strong, golden shield. Epiphany Christmas Carol Sing-A-Long & New Year s Celebration Page Five Let us join together as a parish family to mark the conclusion of the Christmas season and at the beginning of the new year, to thank God for the blessings of the past year, and pray for happiness, health, and blessings in the year to come. I want to see my Graduation Day, my friends expressions upon hearing their names called and our parents getting emotional because of how much we have achieved and how much we have grown. I want to see the Jesus Statue in Brazil so I can take pictures and pray and thank God for everything he has helped me with. I want to see my mom and how she looks when I have done something amazing. I want to see an eagle soaring through the sky, the white and black feathers on its back and big yellow beak. I want to see my big brother working in a good place where he makes enough money to bring food to the table of his own. I want to see Paris, the Eiffel Tower and watch people as they fall in love. I want to see my grandpa s grave. I want to just lay down with him and talk to him. I want to see my dog, her fluffy hair blowing through the winter breeze, her happy face as she cheers me up every morning when I wake up. I want to see my family, the ones who take care of me, the ones who love me, who feed me, who tuck me in. I want to see Michael Jordan play basketball again, watch him train, how he perfects his shot, his spectacular moves just to see him play in that bright red Bulls jersey just one more time.
