2 From the Deacon s Desk Dear Friends: Today we hear from the Gospel of John 20: It s the famous story of Jesus appearing to his disciples the night of Easter Sunday. Jesus offers his disciples peace and sends them on their way to spread the Gospel by empowering them with the gi of the Holy Spirit. Poor Thomas, who was called Didymus, wasn t there when Jesus came. He has a hard me believing that Jesus is back and explains, I will not believe unless I can touch his wounds. A week later, Jesus is back and that s exactly what he challenges Thomas to do. But Thomas sees that it is really Jesus and he says to him, My Lord and my God! Jesus admonishes him by saying, Have you come to believe because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and have believed. I think we can all agree that some mes it s hard for us to profess our faith. Some mes it seems that we are floundering around in this world that cares only for itself. It s hard for us when we are in pain or suffering to see the message Jesus brings to us. Have faith my brothers and sisters; know for a fact that Jesus is with you in whatever you endeavor to do. Do not be afraid because there is nothing to be afraid of! Peace and All Good! Deacon Jim A Message Regarding Parish Safety I wanted to take a few minutes to make you aware that, we as a parish, are working toward making our church, educa on and mee ng space as safe as we can. I a ended a four-hour seminar with the Sheriff s Department to learn what we can do to lessen the danger of the recent trend of violence. I shared that informa on with our staff. The next step is to have one of the Sheriff s depu es visit and educate us on how to react if someone comes to the parish to harm us. That mee ng is being nego ated with the Sheriff s Department. When we have their recommenda ons, we will have town hall mee ngs to discuss how to react if we should have an ac ve shooter. Please know that the Lord is with you in all things! ~Deacon Jim September 16, Save The Date! Faith Fest MD 2018 at the Equestrian Center, Bel Air MD. Physician-Assisted Suicide Legisla on Moves Forward in Several States Recently, we have seen a number of states considering legisla on that would legalize PAS. Across the board these bills are very similar and do not provide even adequate protec ons for vulnerable popula ons such as the elderly and individuals with disabili- es. Most recently we have seen ac on taken on dangerous bills New Jersey. In New Jersey, legislators advanced a bill out of the judiciary commi ee amid controversy. Leading the opposi on was the Medical Society of New Jersey - Chief Opera ng Officer, Mishael Azam, raised significant concerns with the legisla on: "There is no requirement for a witness to the death. How can we ensure that the pa- ent is in a safe environment and that the medica ons are taken and work properly?" she wrote. "On the other hand, if the pa- ent is not alone, how do we know he is not coerced to take the medica on, or even given the medica on without consent? A terminally ill pa ent should not be exposed to such a risk." In addi on, states like Delaware and Massachuse s are also considering PAS bills this session. While Maryland won't see a bill this year, we will most certainly see something filed next year with proponents likely claiming renewed momentum.
