2 From the Deacon s Desk Dear Friends: Today we hear from Luke s Gospel 16:1-13. This is another very famous story about a dishonest steward who brings great displeasure upon himself from his master because he has mismanaged the master s estate. The master is so angry with the dishonest steward that he actually dismisses him from his posi on of managing the estate. The steward is very distraught as he now has no way to make a living. He s not strong enough to do manual labor, and a er what he did most people will not trust him. In modern-day terms he is between a rock and a hard place. The steward though has a brainstorm. He decides to give everyone who owes his master money a major discount. One man receives a 20% discount, another gets a 50% discount. When the master sees this, he commends the steward for being prudent! I don t know about you, but this sounds unfair to me. The steward is a dishonest man and yet the master compliments him. What can possibly be going on here? One explana on about this parable is that the steward gave back his commission to those he cheated. If that is the case, then the steward has made res tu on for his dishonesty and now will be welcome anywhere in the town. I m sure you figured out by now that even if we sin God is ready and willing to forgive us. Yes we may suffer because of our selfishness. That is usually what happens. But God does forgive us and we are welcome once again into his fold and into the heavenly kingdom. May God give us the courage to ask for God s forgiveness, and may God give us the courage to make res tu- on to those we sin against. Peace and All Good! 3 Jubilee Parish Ministries The People of St Francis Remember Part VI FINAL THOUGHTS As we approached the Saint Francis de Sales triple Jubilee Anniversary (original church 150 years, designation as independent parish 50 years, dedication of Worship Center 25 years) Year 2016, we have future looks and final comments by parishioners. Worry about not enough priests; It was like a second family; Got warm, fuzzy felling being there; God has blessed me so much with being a part of Saint Francis; to the people of SFDS we sing the refrain of We are the Body of Christ ; How we have grown from 200 to 2500 families and still keep small church feeling; The people are important, we drop everything to deal personally with their needs; A wonderful sense of belonging; This is a parish with wonderful, alive committed involvement of people. So heartening to see the fun members are having that gives meaning to lives. Fr. This report not only measures how each state is currently doing, but also includes ideas about how policymakers can help further reduce cancer diagnosis and deaths. Notably, the report highlights the great work that Maryland is already doing in many areas including access to quality palliative care. As we've discussed in the past, palliative care is a critical tool to help patients who are suffering from a serious illness to deal with the related pain and stress. Palliative care ensures these patients can have the best possible quality of life while improving health outcomes and lowering costs. And while palliative care is not exclusively for terminal patients, it is very often utilized by them. This report's stellar ranking for Maryland's palliative care access (only one of 13 nationally with the report's highest ranking) underlines what we've been arguing all along: why is the Maryland General Assembly even considering legalizing physician assisted suicide when Marylanders who are facing a serious illness already have excellent options to treat and care for them, including hospice and palliative care? We're proud that Maryland has such great palliative care. Let's work together to continue that momentum and make sure all end of life care is as good.
