Malcolm Ambrose, Associate * Deacon Dick Acquaviva December 9, 2012 Second Sunday of Advent AWAITING THE SALVATION OF GOD The world does not seem big enough to contain the jubilation of the first reading. In the Gospel reading, the Roman empire isn t big enough, either. The great powers of Rome are named and made to stand waiting for the arrival of God s salvation. And we find Paul meditating joyfully on what really matters. According to Baruch, the city of Jerusalem is like a person standing on tiptoe looking for God s salvation, which is coming from the east. Those who were led away on foot, heads down, now come back, a proud people. Why, the very way is smoothed out. The path is lined with fragrant, lush trees. It can t get any better than this, can it? 3 Second Sunday of Advent SA CLARE PARISH Page 3 From a Grateful Pastor Recently, we completed our project of replacing the flooring of the Church and refinishing all of the seating. I genuinely hope that you are pleased with the results. The planning stages of this project began last year when I asked members of the parish involved in construction to be part of a group that would advise me because the upholstery on the pews was deteriorating rapidly, some of the pews were unstable, and the carpeting was permanently stained in a number of places. This committee helped to find the products and vendors that were ultimately used. A few people have commented that they miss the upholstery on the pews. The decision to return to bare wood was based entirely on hygiene. We live in the times of swine and avian flu and the fabric was impossible to keep clean with over 6000 people a week worshipping here. If you would like to bring a pillow or cushion for comfort, please feel free to do so. Other people have expressed concern about whether or not we have gone into debt because of this extensive project. The answer to that is No. This project was completed slightly over budget, but entirely paid for through your generous donations to the parish building fund. In April of 2011, when I announced that we no longer had a debt to the Archdiocese, I asked everyone to keep giving to the building fund in order to pay for necessary projects in the parish. Through your generosity, the Church gutters and roof have been repaired, Fr. Malcolm s residence has been repaired, and we have completed this project. Now, I must ask you to maintain your generosity. The sound system is having problems and needs to be replaced. Because of such rapidly changing technology, our system is not compatible with currently produced systems. Therefore, this is not a project that can be done in phases. Also, there are always repairs that need to be made in such a large facility. Once again, thank you for your patience and generosity. May God bless you and this parish at all times. Fr. Olin Sunday, December 16th Join Your Parish Family for Our Annual Christmas Concert & Potluck - And This Year Including our Las Posadas For some years, St. Clare s has enjoyed our Christmas Concert and Potluck and our Hispanic Community has celebrated Las Posadas. This year, some of the diverse cultures of our parish community join together to experience our same traditions in a new way. Each of our Church Choirs will be in the Church at 4:30pm to begin their sharing of their gift of song. Each group will share their favorite music selections with you. Then we will all go to the Parish Hall but this year, we will be made witness to Las Posadas. Las Posadas originated in Spain but has been celebrated in Mexico for over 400 years. It is also celebrated in parts of central and south American countries as well as here in the United States. Posadas means accommodations or lodging. As a reenactment of Mary & Joseph s journey and finding no room at the inn, the actors go from door to door seeking a place to stay singing along the way. Once they have arrived at the welcoming place there is a celebration. On Sunday, December 16th, our parish potluck will be a part of the celebration and the Parish Hall the welcoming place. We hope you will be able to bring your food to share to the Parish Hall prior to the concert because we don t want you to miss a minute of the this magical mixing of music and tradition. What Advent practice would assist you in expressing your repentance? CHILDREN: What do you want to ask God to forgive you for? What can you do during Advent to show you are sorry? ADVENT SEASON The season of Advent began last Sunday, December 2. How will your family prepare for Christmas through this season? One idea would be to have an Advent Wreath in your home and light one candle for each week of Advent praying a short prayer with your family at your main meal together. Explaining the symbolism behind the wreath to your children. The circle of evergreens represent God s never ending love and that He ll be with us forever, the three purple candles represent getting ready, preparation for Christ s birthday. Light the one pink candle on the third week of Advent to signify hope, we re almost to Christmas. Other ideas for Advent would be an Advent calendar to mark the countdown to Christmas, Jesse Tree which tells about our ancestors of faith leading up to Jesus, blessing of the Manger. (you can download more info at usccb.org) Whatever you do with your family for the Advent season, remember the meaning of Advent waiting preparing expecting excitement joy doing for others, prayer as we wait for the celebration of Christ s birth and that he will come again! They are planning a Christmas party and retreat for the girls at Camp Scudder. There will be boxes in the vestibules of the church for collection of items such as, toothpaste, shampoo, conditioner, soap and cotton gloves. If you can help, there are boxes in the vestibules.
